i've always figured that whenever anyone dies, the whole world ends. like, no one ever dies of age or disease or accident. instead, each life ends in the annihilation of all life in the world, perhaps the universe. so the apocalypse is no big deal, really. happens every day.

If you are deluded enough to think otherwise, it is because you are fucking stupid enough to think the world revolves around you and others like you, and arrogant enough to believe that there is a supreme being that cares more about you and yours than any other of the 6.5 billion skinbags who also live here.

"God says, 'Do you love husband or wife over me? Do you love son or daughter over me?' There is a test. There is a trial here that the believers are going through. It's a fiery trial."

So why on Earth have you not renounced all your worldly possessions in favor of a life of helping the poor and advocating non-violence and Universal Christly Love? You really think renouncing your family and TV set in the final hours is going to fool an omnipresent and omniscient deity?

Was reading somewhere (probably a New Yorker/NYT article linked from ILX but I can't find it now) about end-of-world cults after the non-event, and instead of being embarrassed or disillusioned the members were very happy to go "well, it WOULD have ended, but thanks to the fervent prayers and message-spreading of our little group, God has seen that his chosen ones are active and spared the world for a while longer, so it's all very important we stay in this thing" etc

russ conway's game of life (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 11 May 2011 12:42 (fourteen years ago)

When July 5, 1998 arrived and no alien fleet appeared in the sky, members of the Church began citing a large number of conspiracy theories to explain why the predicted end of the world did not take place. The manual page of the ddate program claims that the Church "declared that it had got the year upside down" and that X-Day will actually take place in 8661. The most popular explanation for the failure of the prophecy in the Church is usually summarized with the statement, "the calendar is wrong and July 5th, 1998 has not really arrived yet." Because of this, the Church has held annual gatherings around July 5 of each year since 1998 to celebrate X-Day and greet the arrival of the anticipated alien "Sex Goddesses." No flying saucer rendezvous has been confirmed as of 2010, but members of the Church have been undaunted. A more recent theory suggests that the X-ists did indeed come to Earth on July 5, 1998 as foretold by "Bob," but through one of the most pervasive Conspiracy coverups, Earth and Mars were switched, and the "Earth" we know is actually Mars. And thus, as there was nobody on the True Earth at the time of their arrival, there was nobody there to witness the Rupture.

Well, I'm sort of mystified as to why he has gotten so much attention in the first place. I'm pretty sure there wasn't this much attention paid to his prediction the first time around. I don't see how his methodology is any different from a whole slew of internet kooks who mess around with the bible and numerology and come up with similar dumbass predictions.

Also, it is mystifying to me that he has ANY followers whatsoever. If you've ever heard him on the radio he is soooooooo boring. It seems like most other similarly insufferable fundamentalist preachers at least have a little personality.

isn't that a section in Steppenwolf iirc? man vs cars

he/his followers took it viral w/ billboards everywhere, right? if it was only on the radio nobody would care

it's the the weekly Meme, all those people buying smartphones need shit to tweet and the Rapture fits right into the global weirding going on. plus everyone knows that the world's supposed to end in 2012 so it's an easy zing

Go out to the parking lot
And you get in your car and you drive real far
And you drive all night and then you see a light
And it comes right down and lands on the ground
And out comes a man from Mars
And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head
And then you're in the man from Mars
You go out at night, eatin' cars
You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too
Mercuries and Subarus
And you don't stop, you keep on eatin' cars
Then, when there's no more cars

I beg to differ. The chosen end date guaranteed the poll's results would be available when they were needed.

everything about that story is fucked up but

The unidentified man, who is currently in his 50s, had tried to pry a dead mouse from a stray cat's mouth on June 2 when the cat attacked him.

It was originally calculated to be November and then revised to match up w the Mayan calendar. Looking up Terrence McKenna on youtube will get you plenty of silly lectures superimposed with 90s psychedelic screensavers and barely audible beneath techo.

Pretty much all the doomsday theories are your standard end-of-the-world stuff given credence by being arbitrarily connected to the Mayan thing.

'2 – No one really knows how the ancient Mayans got such accurate information that they could construct such a calendar without the modern observational equipment we have today. But we Christians mostly believe it had to be some kind of satanic or demonic influence."

What would the Rapture feel/look like?
Is it like a flashlight, cameras that flash at your eyes without notice?
And feel our Heart make a "Vibrate Trumpet" like a cell phone?

wynnsmom

My guess - We'll hear a trumpet and an irresistable call to "come on up" and whoosh we are excellerating heavenward. We will know exactly what is happening. It will seem like the most natural thing (as in not shocking that it is happening) thing. I suspect your thought will be, "I'm going home!"
