Cadbury's Creme Eggs - How Do You Eat Yours?

Message Bookmarked

If given the chance, I will refrigerate Creme Eggs before eating. I like them cold cause they're less goopy and messy and take longer to eat so I can enjoy them more.

RS thought this was one of my weird habits but turns out other friends of ours do this too. I also know someone who eats them with a spoon.

So, how do you eat yours?

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Friday, 6 March 2009 16:19 (fifteen years ago) link

bite off the top, lick out the middle, eat the rest. Don't refrigerate them.

I used to refrigerate whole cartons of creme eggs for use year round. At the pharmacy near my high school, the day after Easter we'd routinely pick up a few boxes for just a couple bucks apiece. If you have the room in the fridge, I can't recommend it enough.

u might turn into fattey though.

ian, Friday, 6 March 2009 16:21 (fifteen years ago) link

adding them to ice cream sounds like an A+ idea!

ian, Friday, 6 March 2009 16:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I just shove them into my mouth in one go.

My mother-in-law sent me a couple of these a few months ago and they were pretty great too: http://www.cremeeggtwisted.com/

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Friday, 6 March 2009 16:27 (fifteen years ago) link

there's two places in NYC that do DEEP-FRIED cadbury eggs around easter time and it is pretty phenomenal.

I tried my hardest to make that not sound like OMG BACON OMONOMONOM, but it's difficult considering the subject matter.

anyway, the best part about it is the texture, when the creme part gets all melty inside the dough shell.

Yeah most Cadbury we get here is from Canada and tastes slightly different (ie. not quite as good) as the kind you can get in the UK. I haven't noticed it so much with Creme Eggs but it's obvious with things like Dairy Milk bars etc. I hope you find and like them.

I like the idea of taking the regular egg and dipping it in a thin layer of white chocolate to make it look like a real egg. Then again, maybe I'm in a sugar stupor because I just ate one.

as with most candy, i horde it, telling myself i'm going to eat it when the time is right.
By the time i think about it it's too old to eat.

Refrigerating chocolate is wrong.

I unwrap it and put the whole thing in my mouth at once. I then roll it around my mouth for as long as I can stand, so it warms up, softens, and intensifies in flavour. Then I squish it against the roof of my mouth with my tongue, an chew, taste, taste, chew, taste, swallow, think about having another.

I am addicted to these. If I take up the three for £1 offer I'll eat all three before the end of the day. Usually two within the hour, and then I tell myself I'll leave the other until tomorrow, but that doesn't work for long. And I take up that offer three or four times a week, having to restrain myself on the other days. P.S. I am not enormously fat. Not until they start selling them all year round.

bite off the top, lick out the middle, eat the rest. Don't refrigerate them.

I do this too.

Dairy Milk Caramel is probably my second-favourite chocolate, but I'm not a huge fan of the Caramel Egg! Maybe I just don't appreciate the crass ploy to get my money.

D) Do they really put wax in their chocolate?
No, Hershey doesn't use paraffin wax to achieve the correct
consistency, unlike many home recipes. Instead, they use cocoa butter
to achieve the nice sheen and texture. According to the following page
from Cornell University, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not
approved the use of paraffin as a food additive:

Those eggs are second only to ribs in the pantheon of delicious/irresistable yet practically inedible/impossible to eat without making a disgusting sticky mess. Putting 'em in the freezer helps to contain the stickiness somewhat, but that first bite has to be taken beforehand, while the chocolate is still room temperature and fairly pliable, otherwise I injure my palate. Generally I restrict myself to 3 or 4 of 'em every April, soon as the price inevitably drops to $0.25.

re: hershey's

apparently (IIRC) the big problem with making milk chocolate in the 19th/early 20th century was you had to use soured milk for the chocolate to take? And Nestle employed a thousand scientists working at a thousand typewriters to try to solve the problem and they did, so Nestle started making milk chocolate with regular (i.e., not gone bad) milk and Hershey's, like the anti-intellectual Americans they are, have kept on using the sour stuff.

caek, Sunday, 29 March 2009 20:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Cheers, caek!

Here's the bit I remembered:

Chocolate had become a wholly different food--a mass-market global confection--because a way had been found to make it with milk, previously impossible, owing to the fats' absolute intolerance of anything with water in it. (People had been trying to mix chocolate and milk since cacao beans arrived in Seville; the model was probably coffee.) The trick was in manipulating the boiling point. In 1867, Henri Nestle, in Vevey, on Lake Geneva, trying to create an infant formula that wouldn't spoil, put milk in a sealed container, removed the air with a crude pump, and heated it until the water content evaporated. In a vacuum, milk boils at a lower temperature and doesn't curdle. Nine years later, Daniel Peter, the town's chocolate manufacturer, fed the formula to a newborn baby and understood an essential implication: a dried milk would not be rejected in cacao. Chocolate now had a populist formulation, its intensity diluted and dulled by sweet fats. It was an indulgence (fat + fat + sugar) and it was cheap (because milk was the principal ingredient), and by the time Peter's Chocolate won a gold medal at an Amsterdam exhibition in 1883, people couldn't get enough of it. By 1901, Peter's Chocolate had a U.S. distributor and an unobstructed horizon to expand to. No American had figured out the boiling trick, although many tried, including Milton Hershey, whose milk kept curdling, until finally, after years of experiments, Hershey settled for what he could get: milk chocolate that was slightly soured but not entirely ruined. (To this day, American milk chocolate makes Europeans gag.)

my parents brought a whole bunch of them over from nz - caramello for me, mint-dark for ytth - but they taste DIFFERENT! they're no longer being made in nz (nz's stuff is now sourced from australia and britain) and i think they're going cheap on quality of ingredients. biggest noticeable change was the taste of the caramel.

the ones you get here in the US taste pretty disappointing - iirc they were/are made under license by hershey's. but then, NZ cadbury's has totally changed its recipe (cost cutting) the last couple of years and their chocolate tastes like shit now too.

What the heck is "dairy milk"? I've always completely ignored this as a weird Britishism but the article implies it's NOT the same thing as "milk chocolate"?

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Monday, 12 January 2015 15:48 (nine years ago) link

Or, per the article, "diary milk." I know typing is hard, guys.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Monday, 12 January 2015 15:49 (nine years ago) link

Cadbury's Dairy Milk. it's a type of chocolate.

koogs, Monday, 12 January 2015 15:52 (nine years ago) link

https://www.cadbury.co.uk/products/dairy-milk-2360?p=2360

koogs, Monday, 12 January 2015 15:53 (nine years ago) link

IO - it is milk chocolate. It's what cadbury's call their plain milk chocolate. Like if Hershey's had a name for their plain bars instead of just Hershey's bars. Does that make sense?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 12 January 2015 15:54 (nine years ago) link

So it's Cadbury's specific milk choc recipe. I guess what the article is saying is that they've tinkered with it so that it's not exactly like the standard DM one they've used in the past.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 12 January 2015 15:56 (nine years ago) link

ALSO YAY IT IS ALMOST TIME.

I'll withhold judgement till I've eaten one - whole foofaraw sounds like a "we're discontinuing salad cream"-style PR fib tbh - but I must admit I'm anxious. This better not be some New Coke bullshit. The Creme Egg is perfection, and shouldn't be monkeyed with.

I was hoping the only change Kraft's ownership of Cadbury would herald was the insertion of Oreos into their every brand.

#Research (stevie), Monday, 12 January 2015 16:06 (nine years ago) link

I'm sure Kraft is trying to cut costs by using worse chocolate or something.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Monday, 12 January 2015 16:07 (nine years ago) link
