it's one of my favorite movies of the '90s. maybe just one of my favorite movies, period. it nails so many little things about its characters, their world, the vibe of a beach town in off-season, and it does the whole implicitly-political social-observation thing (imo) with more subtlety and ambiguity than european counterparts like the dardennes. she's totally perfect in it, and my massive crush on her is tied directly to it. (ok, and to her star trek bit too.)

Ashley Judd is alright in my book. I can't stand Kentucky (the school) or it's head basketball coach, but she's an intelligent, passionate person who has both the right to speak her mind, to talk shit about her team's undefeated season, and to NOT be subjected to idiotic shit from the twitterverse.
