I think I answered almost all of the questions "the correct way" but I gave a lot of 8's and 3's - though I did say that the free market does better at creating jobs and economic growth, and that corporations are responsible to provide profits to shareholders. I think there were a number of these that in theory I'd have given a 10, but pragmatically ended up with 8s and 7s because I felt "that would be great, but it's not gonna happen in my lifetime."

I like ian's contribution to this thread. I would've been stoked if this was a progressive musical score thread.

Yeah, the corporate/shareholder one bothered me too. Yes, of course that's their primary "responsibility." To say otherwise would be nonsensical. ^^ that's my take on it, too. Some corporations determine that contributing to social welfare and considering the "greater good" lead to being more profitable. Because people regularly act on the basis of morality, morality needs to play some role in calculating profit and future profit. However, people also do immoral and stupid shit, and government has to regulate individual behavior, thus it makes no sense that government shouldn't regulate corporations, runs by people, who by nature do immoral and stupid shit.

Going through it again, I see what libcrypt means -- the quiz is loaded heavily to make sure you answer progressively, because the inverse of the "progressive" opinion wouldn't be conservative, it would be straight-up crackers.

I know some conservatives that are anti-free trade and anti-NAFTA because of where their money comes from. But the ideological conservative argument in favor of free trade, as I understand it, is that it is a logical extension of capitalism, which should be regulated as little as possible. By regulating trade, one is regulating capitalism and the free market. There is also the social belief that it will improve the lives and societies of the international participants in free trade, and that capitalism and the nice things that it introduces will make the "savages" behave better. To quote Billy Bragg, "they all want what we've got, but they don't know it yet."

Makes sense. I'm all for free trade myself, though I'd leave out the part about "savages."

It seems to me that the "oh noes cultural imperialism" argument is the same as the "corporations have social responsibilities" argument, i.e., irrelevant.
