some thoughts
1) there is basically 1 joke in this movie, paul rudd trying to use breezy made-up slang/funny accents, luckily that joke is hilarious and i laughed a lot
2) ok there are more jokes than that but that is the main joke
3) i basically cant watch movies like this--i spend the whole time with my fingers in my ears or burying my face in my lap. the minute i realized where segels toast was going i put my head in my sweater and didnt look at the movie again for like 10 minutes. i felt tense the whole movie just waiting for terrible embarrassing things
4) luckily paul rudd kept saying shit like "slap the bass" and i would laugh and release the tensions
5) rashida jones is, like, smoking. and funny. wd marry on the spot.
6) i guess they made andy sambergs character gay just to avoid the is-paul-rudd-gay question but it seemed like sort of a dead end
7) youd think id be tired of these stupid man-child movies but im not, yet. and while on the one had i cd use fewer 'take yr tampax out' jokes i dont think these are as regressive w/r/t gender as movies like this were 10 yrs ago
8) lou ferrigno! jon favreau! jk simmons!

I agree with the above, esp. the noting of Samberg as a token "gay" character. He, Jones, Simmons etc. are totally wasted.
This year we're seeing a slew of pseudo-Apatow movies; this one, Greg Mottola's "Adventureland" and Jody Hill's "Observe and Report," followed by an actual Apatow movie, "Funny People." Interested to see which is best. (Definitely not "I Love You, Man," though.)

no, but he's cute (xp). Too Jewy to be WASPy Rudd's bro.
Rashida Jones (who I've never seen before) had nothing funny to do here either; see also Larry Wilmore as JoP at the end. I guess you're just sposed to remember when ppl were in other funny things.
see schef & my comments from press screening on RUDD thread. I think I was generous considering that I didn't laugh once.

g'morning max!
It means it's bigscreen TV shit, go see a real film. xp
Your hint wd've been that the writer-director co-wrote Meet the Parents/Fockers. (I warned schef of this as we were going in.)
Also if you bolted as soon as the end credits rolled (always I'm thinkin), you missed more HILARITY [sic].
I've seen Adventureland, it's only abour 30% a crude-dude thing (closer to an '80s Cusack film), and that's Ryan Reynolds not Dane Cook.

I enjoyed it. About halfway through, I was worried that the movie was going to take the position of "Peter needs Sydney to teach him what being a real man is all about" -- but I'm glad that it eventually skirted that notion and made it seem OK for dudes to hang out with their girlfriends and watch Chocolat. (Both my girlfriend and I, weirdly, related to Paul Rudd's character in this movie.) Also Max's #1 point, above, is OTM.

I was just thinking, I think the main reason I avoid a lot of mainstream Hollywood comedies is precisely b/c I fear that a majority of the humor comes from trafficking in gender stereotypes. So many of these movies seem like they're going to be all "this is what dudes are all about" or "women be shoppin'" or whatever.
― jaymc, Friday, 21 August 2009 15:55 (sixteen years ago)
yeah this was better than i thought it would be - mostly due to segel imo.

If Rudd's character is supposed to be the same age as Segel's character, who was in Gr 9 in 1993, there's no way he saw Rush on the Signals tour. Otherwise, I don't think the Rush thing is anachronistic. AFAICT it's still pretty common for guys who play instruments to bond over Rush, even among my students. The band still packed stadiums whenever they toured this decade.

this movie was kind of pointless. the conflict in the story was so minute it looked like it was there just because it had to be.
As far as humor, it was funny as hell for the first half but when they hit the height of the story arc it fell off.

I was going to ask if this is worth a viewing this afternoon but considering this quote I might not
this was the exact same problem that Forgetting Sarah Marshall movie had. Some alright jokes and moments but it wasn't really building to anything and so it felt very episodic -- it was like watching a tv show on DVD and hitting "play all episodes" for two hours.
This better or worse than "Sarah Marshall"?

worse, but i liked fsm

It wasn't bad. These Apatow & Friends kind of movies are better seen with a group, and not alone...on a laptop.

what's the point of comparison w/ Adventureland?
― Alex Da Dad (some dude), Monday, 17 January 2011 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

I watched this a couple weeks ago. It was watchable but Max is right - FSM was much better.
― ENBB, Monday, 17 January 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
all the slappa-the-bass stuff got on my nerves i guess, but everything else was decently funny, really liked the running jon favreau stuff
― *gets the power* (deej), Monday, 17 January 2011 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
This movie was mediocre - Segel was great in individual scenes, but the central story was threadbare and "who cares", which insinuates they wrote the story around the jokes, which is never a good idea.
Also getting tired of films/shows thinks using Lou Ferrigno as himself is the Everest of comedy

Apatow connection in Adventureland is pretty tenuous, both in terms of cast and tone
― Alex Da Dad (some dude), Monday, 17 January 2011 18:18 (fifteen years ago)
ok. who cares? it was brought up in this thread as a point of comparison
― *gets the power* (deej), Monday, 17 January 2011 18:24 (fifteen years ago)
before it was released and people had any idea how off the comparison was, yeah. now we know better.
― Alex Da Dad (some dude), Monday, 17 January 2011 18:51 (fifteen years ago)
thanks for wasting both of our time w/ this
― *gets the power* (deej), Monday, 17 January 2011 19:13 (fifteen years ago)
surely an important & necessary conversation

What classic novel did you recently read for the first time? The last book I read that legitimately qualifies as a classic is “Infinite Jest,” by David Foster Wallace. It is a difficult read, and intentionally so I think. I did it with a book club where we budgeted 100 pages per week over 10 weeks or so. It was truly one of the most gratifying experiences of my life. A group of four grown men sitting around talking about dissatisfaction and loneliness was far more comfortable than I would have imagined. I highly recommend it, with or without a book.
