i'm kind of captivated by your original shirt. there's something indecipherable about it. every other design here has a pretty blatant purpose or idea behind it -- so you look at it and can easily dismiss it a few seconds later. i think the trick would be to put it on the back of the t-shirt -- so you have one design on the front with a fathomable purpose that suggests there is a deeper meaning in the other design on the back.
your original design is the COW TOOLS of band t-shirts.

blueski, if it turns out that it was just some illustrator garbage i'll be major disappointed. like finding out the shaggs really were just half-assing it.
kenan, i knew cheese was delicious, but I didn't know that's why it was in the design. things being delicious is a totally fathomable reason to be included in a t-shirt design. i have no idea why there's an abstract blue house in the middle of a blue terror-wave.

I have what I think is probably the all-time dumb print/web question but maybe this is the thread for it.
After years of working with this stuff, I STILL cannot get to grips with why people ask for 300 dpi images that were originally created from digital souces (in this case, a film). Humour me here - How to check/ensure that an image (let's say a jpeg or TIFF scanned from a negative) is 300 DPI?

to check DPI, use resize image in photoshop or open in preview (on mac) and hit cmd-I.
to change it use resize image in photoshop and untick "resample image" then just type a new resolution. (this doesn't actually affect the number of pixels at all and is not destructive, which is why it's kind of nonsense for people to require a particular DPI)

the one way it seems to make sense to require a particular DPI and where things can go wrong if you don't is:
if you paste an image into, e.g. an illustrator document with physical dimensions then the embedded dpi is used to determine how much physical space the image takes up. so in principle, if people don't check their dpi matches their/the recipients expectations there can be unpredictable results when the next person in the chain does pastes your photo.

A bit late, but people producing artwork when asking for 300dpi at 100% ask so with their fingers crossed that you can supply it that high. If I ask for something at this size, but the original is smaller I would rather you sent me the source image than resizing/sampling it yourself and potentially doing more harm than good through factors such as using the wrong resizing algorithm, saving with a lossy format, losing bit-deptch, or losing the inability to de-interlace video sources.

i just started a jr graphic design position about 3 months ago, after spending 10 yrs in sales & having no design experience.
I took a crash course in InDesign and have used lynda for extra training, my coworkers are v patient and I have learned tons. everything is going great!
my question is -- can anyone recommend me websites/books that will help educate me on design theory? composition, layout, that kind of thing. I am finding that I am cool when I just have to amend an existing document but I kind of freeze up if I have to create something from scratch, and I would like to learn some of the super nuts and bolts basic of captial D design
