My sister and her husband decided to go to Mexico for a last hurrah before commencing the serious buisness of procreating; one last bachanale of beer and tequila and whatnot. Since they were going to be trying at getting pregnant, anyway, they didn't use any protection and before they had even begun trying in earnest she was knocked up. I can't wait till the kid's old enough to inform that he was conceived on a wanton Mexican evening.

Spector's defense - that she was drunk and depressed, took his gun (after it got his prints on it), and shot herself in the face - is a little um wtf. Especially given that immediately afterwards he wandered outside, gun in hand, and said to his driver "I think I killed somebody". Plus a history of being an abusive mysoginistic loon and habit of threatening all kinds of people with firearms... yeah I think the guy is guilty as fuck. so to speak.

To be fair though, Jon had done the same thing (hacking ILX) before and gotten temp banned or yellow carded for it, so it's not like he didn't see that coming. In general, though, I think he'd become much a nicer poster during the last couple of years, so I do hope he's not gone forever.

As for Dom and Gershy, I'm not quite sure if they should be banned permanently, but I don't think there's much point in arguing what was the straw that broke the camel's back and lead to the actual banning, when anyone who visits these boards regularly could see they'd been making personal insults and generally nasty and pointless posts for quite some time before they got banned. Gershy's "schtick", for example, seemed to be reviving old threads to find some "dirt" on other posters, some of whom weren't even around anymore when Gershy revived those threads.

for the love of god people it's "shtick". it probably shouldn't be, but it is.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary "schtick" is a variant of "shtick". I use the former spelling because I've studied German so it seems more natural to me.

I don't think "schtick" is an actual German word, I just tend to write this particular German-looking word the way Germans would write it. And most of Yiddish does come from German, right?

According to Wikipedia Yiddish is a High German language, alongside standard German and Luxembourgish. I guess it's too simple to say that most of it comes from German, since it has developed alongside it, but I assume it's closer to German than to Hebrew or any other language. I haven't seen much Yiddish writing, but many of the words I have seen certainly seem to be quite close to their German counterparts, if not identical.

Hi. I've tried to clean up my act, and in spite of the occasional grievous error (which I've profusely apologised for) such as JFC.jpg, I think I'm largely succeeding. Whether this is a sign of belated maturity or a reaction to the sword of Damocles imminently pendant over my very ILX existence remains to be seen; I'd rather hope to think it's the former, but if SB has had a positive effect, it HAS been to impress the value of thinking before posting with somewhat more assiduousness than I'd been exercising beforehand. 3 SBs gained in the past 4 months (at last count; can this please be updated in case I've caused any significant offence in the past few days), as opposed to 90 in the previous half-year, bears testament to this. I'm seriously trying to stave off the remaining nine, even indefinitely, if I can.

Anyhow, enough of the self promotion. I've been banned from 77 since before my temp ban, following an offence that although serious (reposting a non-77 user to 77) I think I've served enough time for. I maintain I was made something of an example of, and also maintain that my offence was borne out of stupidity rather than malice, stupidity which I am slowly weaning out of my system. This sort of self-analysis can come over a bit jerkish so I won't press my case any further, but it'd be cool if you could let me back onto 77 kthx :)

one question I've used during job interviews is "tell me the biggest misperception other people have about you" - it's a way to get people to tell you something true about themselves, because there are rarely misperceptions about people's behavior. people figure out other people's deals, and we don't hide ourselves as well as we like to imagine.

One thing I get a lot - from wildly different people, throughout different eras of my life, different locations, and so on - is how they thought I was mean and scary when the first saw me around and realized I was neither of these things and was actually kind of a goofball after they got to know me. I'm a big guy and my default, zoning-out facial expression is actually really intimidating looking so I totally understand, but this has come up more than a couple of times. So I'd say that I inadvertently hid my true self fairly well.

Mostly I can be my own self around most of my friends, but my real, true, longest lasting friends are the ones I can be gross and scatological around and they don't find it beneath them, and in fact elevate the conversation by trying to be even grosser. Lots of other, more casual friends aren't into this at all.

Slight edit:

---

The first problem I have is that the family is very sympathetic*, from what I remember, with the sole exception of the fact they kill and are criminals. The second is the "no matter who they are," as the people who get murdered by the family were always less than sympathetic. I never recall watching the Corleone's kill somebody and being appalled as I would've been had the victim been portrayed as really innocent and undeserving of it - and even when they do murder someone it's always done out of some code of honor, even Fredo's death is has a sort of Abraham-Isaac "your death is a commandment, not a personal wish" element.

*My definition of sympathy is that I can imaginatively see myself in their position and, gauging their actions, morally judge it to be understandable, if not something I condone.

Ever felt like giving up?
I've felt like giving up.
But not since 1969.

I found a greater truth,
At a godly altitude,
Won't waste another day of my life.

As we tumbled down to earth,
We felt the capsule turn,
We saw the blue skies burn.

As we splashed down in the sea,
You were praying on your knees,
It bought a change in me.

Everyone will forget soon,
The fourth man on the moon,
But I've got it in my mind.

I'd like to paint your eyes,
But I've got to paint the sky.
Going to be a painter all my life.
As we tumbled down to earth,
We felt the capsule turn,
We saw the blue skies burn.

As we splashed down in the sea,
You were praying on your knees,
It bought a change in me.

And what you didn't see,
I'll let you see through me.
I'm going to paint the moon for you.

Ever felt like giving up?
'We've felt like giving up'
Ever felt like giving up?
'All the time.'

This is terribly sad. There was a terrific interview with him in Amplifier in the late 90's/2000 about Summerteeth in which he confessed his love for early Bee Gees (not an easy admission to make back then) and discussed his use of the Chamberlain, a precursor to the Mellotron.

I really thought a lot of his playing on that record and concur with others who noted that his departure from Wilco was a real loss -- they never have equaled that partnership again, IMO.

Have I mentioned what a hug maniac my 15-yr-old brother is? He has his own style of hug, which he calls 'Cars0n hugs' after himself, which involve squeezing the fucking shit out of you for a good 10 seconds. He's so wicked affectionate, it is just crazy.

Last night he was telling me in his speech class, a student gave a speech about how some of his best friends got kidnapped, raped and murdered when they were in elementary school. "It was so SAD, I needed some hugs but hardly anyone would give me one." My hypothesis, that it was bcz people like breathing while being hugged, was wrong. It turns out he's doing an 'I'm creepy and weird' gambit lately where he breathes on people's necks ans stabs his arm to make blood squirt onto his notebooks. •_•

Does COCO like black metal?

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, June 3, 2009 1:15 PM (59 minutes ago)

well, the thing is thurston doesn't sound like he's really explored death metal much at all. it does have a somewhat higher technical-capability point of entry...sorta...sometimes...but the best death metal albums are masterpieces of mood & atmosphere, to my ears more complex than the atmospherics of the bedroom black metallers who often tend to be shooting for the same atmosphere you know? like, autopsy, that's some of the most intensely dripping cellar groove, but then there's gorguts on considered dead and the erosion of sanity which is more like a very big empty cold concrete stockyard feel, and then Death & early Morbid Angel has this off-in-space vibe that to me is unmissiable...that they use their technical proficiency to conjure this vibe (instead of relying on effects boxes or stuff further down the signal chain, not that there's anything wrong with that either) is to me every bit as inspiring as a guy who constructs the vibe out of rawer/less study-intensive materials. you know? and there are death metal bands today who're working up the crazy atmospherics, too...dead congregation for one, there's plenty more

tl;dr early gorguts fucking slays, death metal underrated by artsy guys

Since this has sort of turned into a general late night thread, who's placing odds on Jon Stewart taking over for Letterman when his run is over? CBS and Comedy Central are Viacom bedfellows, and I can't think of a single candidate more primed for the job right now (excepting Colbert, which could be fun if he carried over the character).

I saw this link A FEW YEARS AGO, and ignored it, and was amazed to see a bunch of chumps like yourselves are still on my dick after all of these (8) years.

I'll tell you the real story.

For the record, I am a MAN. "White Boy" is a vague, racial insult used by minorities as a diminutive term to infantilize White men. It is no worse, than say, "Nigger", you fucking niggers.

If you bitchtime, cookies 'n' cream motherfuckers want to read the truth, you can see it on Philaflava.com in the "My Two Cents" and the "Party and Bullshit" forums. You can read where I "out" Vordul as a cracksmoking, manic-depressive, degenerate faggot, and his people who post on the same board cannot even deny it anymore. Yes, a LITERAL faggot.

That "Trapper Jenn, PMS" bitch already retracted her statement (where she writes as if she was there and knew all of the things that transpired beforehand, as well. GREAT JOURNALISM! Ugly tramp.) and basically acknowledged, like most of you, she shares common ground in not knowing what the FUCK she is talking about. This Acelover chump is just regurgitating what that little Jew bastard El-P had everyone believing through his legion of loyal, misguided, online dickriders.

Steroids? Coke? Not me. EVER. All for bitchtime cowards, like EL-P, who, IRONICALLY, has now acknowledged HIS drug problem. I guess if I looked like a pudgy, pasty, fish-faced, leprechaun faggot, I'd want to ease the pain and escape from it too. But, since you she-males are so interested, you can read the real story on the Philaflava messageboards. Look around 6/2/09.

I think we've have discussions before about 1980s Chicago-area Hughes(y) movies and their suburbs/city politics -- they mostly take the northern suburbs as this lovely upper-middle-class home and then send kids adventuring out into the scary scary city, filled with potentially dangerous minorities and working-class people. (This is way more of an Adventures in Babysitting thing than a Bueller one, but that's sort of the psychic organization for everything during this era.) Yes, Chicago proper is highly segregated in a north/south direction and the 80s were a pretty peak time for dysfunction in (and suburban fear of) inner cities.
