Anybody seen Party Down, new Starz comedy series?

I caught a few episodes of this last night and it wasn't all that bad. It's blend of low-brow humor, clever writing and often throw-away delivery kind of appealed to me.

Décidément, on ne sait plus faire les miroirs (Michael White), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 15:14 (sixteen years ago)

Rob Thomas ('Veronica Mars') and Paul Rudd are amongst the producers and it stars Adam Scott ('Tell Me You Love Me'), Jane Lynch and Lizzy Caplan ('True Blood').

one month passes...

this is really good & funny. episode where jane lynch and ed begley get high is so good

johnny crunch, Saturday, 9 May 2009 04:52 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah it's pretty good. The guy who plays Ron is consistently great.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 9 May 2009 05:03 (sixteen years ago)

really want to see this, hope there's a dvd soon enough

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Saturday, 9 May 2009 05:29 (sixteen years ago)

If you have Netflix you can want online.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 9 May 2009 13:55 (sixteen years ago)

watch, sorry early.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 9 May 2009 13:56 (sixteen years ago)

i think we all want, online.

s1ocki, Sunday, 10 May 2009 00:25 (sixteen years ago)

idk how i was so reserved abt my love 4 this srsly its really p. great!

gradually noticing like EVERY vmars actor ie., logan playing a young republican in ep. 3 i think, was awesome

still are 4 eps or so ive not watched yet

johnny crunch, Sunday, 10 May 2009 00:33 (sixteen years ago)

Finally started watching this on netflix, I think it might even be funnier than current season 30 rock.

Hatfail of Hollow (Nicole), Friday, 22 May 2009 15:34 (sixteen years ago)

saw ep 1 and didn't really laugh. maybe i try again.

^defense is impregnable (will), Friday, 22 May 2009 15:36 (sixteen years ago)

this program's rad, loved the porno episode + the eastern european mobsters

just sayin, Friday, 22 May 2009 15:37 (sixteen years ago)

didn't realize there was a thread, had thought about starting one. really good show -- kinda wish they'd ease up on the Ken Marino character, him saying "soup or crackers" every 5 mins and having some embarrassing breakdown at the end of almost every episode is getting pretty tired. but aside from that, solid.

what are y'alls favorite episodes -- i've really liked the run from "Sin Say Shun Awards After Party" to "Celebrate Ricky Sargulesh," felt like the show was hitting its stride w/ those.

dream hater, come rescue me (some dude), Friday, 22 May 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

planning on watching these this weekend!

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 22 May 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

haha xpost to justsayin

dream hater, come rescue me (some dude), Friday, 22 May 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

Really like this -- what surprised me about it is that it subtly ramps up into feeling ... somewhat dramatic, actually? There's just some point, a few episodes in, where I started caring what was going on character-wise, almost in an old sitcommy way, and then the show's pretty much maintained and worked with that. It's weird -- whatever earnestness works to accomplish that flies under the radar for a while.

(Maybe I'm just surprised in comparison to the other show Starz developed, Head Case, which is just screwball funny with no attachment to reality necessary.)

nabisco, Friday, 22 May 2009 15:39 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe it's just a matter of good writing -- e.g., all the various deployments of the "Are we having fun yet?" thing so far have been really deft

nabisco, Friday, 22 May 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

yeah...i was kinda groaning at first when they introduced the relationship plot, but it's paid off in some good ways -- esp. w/ reactions from Martin Starr's character.

i keep seeing Head Case on the schedule next to it but haven't given it a look - should i?

dream hater, come rescue me (some dude), Friday, 22 May 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i was gonna say -- the way they've teased out "are we having fun yet?" w/o overdoing it has been really great, which is why it annoys me how much they did "super r crackers" to death

dream hater, come rescue me (some dude), Friday, 22 May 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

season final's on tonight i think?

just sayin, Friday, 22 May 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)

yeah -- kristen bell guesting on this one too

dream hater, come rescue me (some dude), Friday, 22 May 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

Sure, watch Head Case if you have the time for it -- it's sort of antic and ridiculous and heavily improvised (with celebrity-guest therapy patients, in a sort of Dr. Katz-ish way), and funny, and mostly it's just entertaining to see how far Alexandra Wentworth(-Stephanopolous) will go in terms of humiliating her character or pushing herself into total goony awfulness ... early in the season she was covered with herpes sores, and last week she decided she wanted a child and then learned that "I don't have a uterus," which is maybe a good indicator of where that show sits

This is weird but I had this alarming intense dream last week where I was just hanging out with Kristen Bell, having a conversation, and she was the most awesome smart funny charming fun person on the planet and I wanted to hang out with her forever, and then it was sort of depressing to wake up and have all my excitement over having met the most wonderful person in the universe deflate, and basically now I am scared to see her in anything, or really face the fact that nothing in the world will ever be as great as my weird dream wherein the world was perfect -- also I am disturbed that my subconscious would create this idealized character and then give it the form of Kristen Bell, who I think is cool but really does not occupy much of my brainspace at all

nabisco, Friday, 22 May 2009 15:56 (sixteen years ago)

<3 your crazy ass brain dude

dream hater, come rescue me (some dude), Friday, 22 May 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)

I think I liked Taylor Stiltskin's Sweet Sixteen Party best, I think. Jane Lynch's "it's like a fairy tale" or whatever cracked me up.

Every bit with Martin Starr is great. He totally steals the Brandix Corporate Retreat ep. "Dude I told you there was a line", "This guys not a closer, I've been here twenty minutes." Jennifer Coolidge was great last ep. "You're NOT a dolphin scientist!"

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 May 2009 16:14 (sixteen years ago)

The thing that gets me about Starr's character is how handily they keep in this frame of being realistically hard to like -- they resist the urge to make him a lovable loser/misanthrope/geek, and actually just let him be kinda awful. And yet he's awful in a way so familiar and true-to-life that I wind up liking the character anyway.

nabisco, Friday, 22 May 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, there is no sympathy for Roman

nabisco, Friday, 22 May 2009 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

i would watch pretty much anything with this cast

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 22 May 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah that's why I started watching it. I was like wow look at who is this. B-b-b-but it's on Starz! Okay it's only thirty minutes long.

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 May 2009 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know if anyone saw Ron's high-school reunion last week, but man, I was feeling genuine deep dramatic awfulness for the poor dude at the end

nabisco, Friday, 22 May 2009 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

also BTW this show has finally made me sit up and pay some respect for the directorial skills of one Fred Savage

nabisco, Friday, 22 May 2009 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

yeah absolutely. my favorite was when they set it up like they were gonna throw his character a bone (so to speak) w/ the one porn star and instead he got all haughty about the differences between fantasy and 'hard sci fi'

xpost

dream hater, come rescue me (some dude), Friday, 22 May 2009 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

nabisco have you seen It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia? he directed a bunch of that too and it's been consistently fun.

Simon H., Friday, 22 May 2009 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

I was feeling genuine deep dramatic awfulness for the poor dude at the end

My gf pointed out that they've gone Fawlty Towers on this character.

Anybody seen Jane Lynch in 'Glee'?

nabisco have you seen It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia?

I watched half an episode of this and was just too insanely turned off to even finish -- yeah, sorry, I know loads of people like it a lot, but I guess it's just Not For Me

nabisco, Friday, 22 May 2009 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

why do you guys have starz? does it come with another channel?

ˈɒksnɑrd (jeff), Friday, 22 May 2009 21:32 (sixteen years ago)

For some reason I just randomly get six Starz channels and Starz On Demand with my cable package. I don't get any other pay channels and none of my other friends who have packages w/ HBO or whatever get it. It's weird, but it's not an accident.

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 May 2009 21:39 (sixteen years ago)

wth is "starz" anyway

s1ocki, Friday, 22 May 2009 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

i'm just gonna watch it on netflix (pretty awesome than it's on there right away)

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 22 May 2009 21:40 (sixteen years ago)

Starz is, I believe, the movie channel for Showtime. The equivalent to Encore for HBO.

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 May 2009 21:50 (sixteen years ago)

Starz has exactly three shows, right. Head Case, Party Down and uh Crash: The TV Show.

Alex in SF, Friday, 22 May 2009 21:53 (sixteen years ago)

yea my cable company (comcast) just gave me a free year of starz cuz they thought they might lose the nfl network. although i have netflix too so perhaps would have discovered this anyway.

ditto on the v. strong dislike of sunny in philadelphia and i tried 3 eps or so

johnny crunch, Friday, 22 May 2009 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

This is weird but I had this alarming intense dream last week where I was just hanging out with Kristen Bell, having a conversation, and she was the most awesome smart funny charming fun person on the planet and I wanted to hang out with her forever

i think this is what kristen bell is really like, fyi, so maybe your subconscious actually knows her or whatever

i had no idea this show existed but now i will watch it all on netflix online.

season finale was not really funny :(

johnny crunch, Saturday, 23 May 2009 05:13 (sixteen years ago)

"season finale was not really funny :("

Wasn't meant to be though (although he ending sequence where Kristin gives her card to Henry was funny.)

Alex in SF, Saturday, 23 May 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

Wasn't funny? I thought it was hilarious. Brave, unsettling, almost existential.

I am worried, however, that we'll lose too many of the cast, given the finale.

Le présent se dégrade, d'abord en histoire, puis en (Michael White), Saturday, 23 May 2009 15:32 (sixteen years ago)

lol @ almost existential

i made my friend on demand some of these yesterday. the scene in the adult awards ep w/ ron being goaded into showing his wang to everyone is bordering on existential w/ it being so long and unbroken

also CROWJAR

johnny crunch, Monday, 25 May 2009 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

I think they kinda deliberately left it open-ended since some of them are pretty in demand and they can kinda decide when and how to pick up the story in a way that can keep or ditch whoever they need to next year. i read an interview where Jane Lynch seemed pretty confident that if PD and Glee both get picked up she'd be able to juggle them both, but then they threw her girlfriend from Best In Show in her place for the last couple episodes, so who knows with her.

some dude, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 02:10 (sixteen years ago)

i don't know if i'm disappointed that Paul Rudd has yet to pop onscreen or if i admire their restraint for not pulling out the famous-exec-producer-guest-starring big guns right away.

some dude, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 02:11 (sixteen years ago)

i have all of these ondemand, i guess i should run through them?

this is great! nabisco totally otm about the dramatic stuff--only halfway through the series but i am, like, "into" are we having fun yets relationship with janis ian, its nice & sweet & funny and sort of creeps up on you.

also really like how casual the show is about drug use! nothing drags a good ecstasy subplot down like a boring "message"

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 12:15 (sixteen years ago)

Ha I watched all of these over the weekend too. It's nice.

btw if anybody told me when mean girls came out that 5 years later i would be crushing way harder on the gothy sidekick than lohan herself i would have been all "no way"

o shit that's where she's from

just sayin, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 12:35 (sixteen years ago)

I like all the dudes on this show but Ken Marino is amazing. He's such a big dude and kind of scary so it seems like they'd be tempted to have him go into freak-out mode when things go wrong and start yelling and overacting. But instead he's like a little nebbishy guy in a big body. I love whenever there's a disaster and Ron just like whispers "oh... no..."

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 12:58 (sixteen years ago)

yes!! "No no no no no no no..."

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:25 (sixteen years ago)

my favourite moment is his confusion at the stripper nurse after the heart attack... "nurse! nurse! what's... what's going on?"

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:25 (sixteen years ago)

yeah...as i've said upthread, i'm kind of annoyed by the way his character is written at times, but his performance is A+. not really into The State but he's probably my favorite out of all those ppl.

some dude, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:26 (sixteen years ago)

also really good on Reaper and Veronica Mars.

some dude, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:27 (sixteen years ago)

did u see the movie "the ten"? he's really, really funny in that.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:29 (sixteen years ago)

omg u can just watch the funniest scene here:

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

His acting in the last couple of episodes really got to me, it was a lot more affecting than most of the acting I see in dramas. His drunken meltdown in the last episode felt real, to the point where it came off as scary.

Hatfail of Hollow (Nicole), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:34 (sixteen years ago)

^agree. it's almost hard to laugh @ the end of that ep

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:38 (sixteen years ago)

Was trying to fall asleep last night when I realized Henry was a) the creepy teacher on Veronica Mars and b) Will Ferrell's asshole brother in Stepbrothers <- he was amazing in this btw.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:40 (sixteen years ago)

yeah! stepbrothers! i knew he played some waspy asshole in something, but i assumed it was van wilder or some national lampoon movie

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:42 (sixteen years ago)

he was the dude showing interest in kenny powers' comeback in the last ep of eastbound & down, right?

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 13:44 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that too

some dude, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:09 (sixteen years ago)

i would be crushing way harder on the gothy sidekick

Lizzy Caplan is quite crushworthy, imso.

His drunken meltdown in the last episode felt real

That's what I meant about existential above. His whole entreaty to Henry to promise him that it all meant something, that it was a bad start to a Cinderella story, was played just right; pathos skirting bathos but who hasn't felt that way?

Le présent se dégrade, d'abord en histoire, puis en (Michael White), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

yeah thats what im saying, shes a babe, and funny

Le présent se dégrade, d'abord en histoire, puis en (Michael White), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:42 (sixteen years ago)

i got it bad for lizzy caplan but imo the way i'd rank her crushability index in diff't projects would be 1. the class 2. party down 3. cloverfield 4. true blood 5. mean girls

some dude, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:44 (sixteen years ago)

was the class good?

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:47 (sixteen years ago)

eh...basically her and maybe 2 other characters were any good out of a too-big ensemble, but it seemed like they kinda realized that and started to play to the show's strengths toward the end of the season, before the inevitable cancellation.

some dude, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:56 (sixteen years ago)

Eh. The cast was very likable but the plots/writing were a little too sitcommy. xp!

What we thought would be funnier, and I don’t know for sure that this will happen, is that in Season 2 we would do the Edgar Allen Poe movie premiere party—which we’re tentatively naming the movie “Nevermore”—that was the product of today’s brainstorming.

yeah it was worth it for the makeup

ˈɒksnɑrd (jeff), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

having done teen-show television; a lot of actors very much like Kyle Bradway came through my office in the three years I did “Veronica Mars.” So yeah, that particular character really was a pretty spot-on caricature of an actor I’ve worked with before who I would never in a million years tell anyone [who he is]. [Laughs.]

We considered whether that particular actor could actually play the role. We decided that the actor who we’re actually modeling that on wouldn’t get the joke, therefore he couldn’t really perform this.

I wonder if this is the dude that played Duncan, he just seemed like a himbo that couldn't act.

Hatfail of Hollow (Nicole), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:20 (sixteen years ago)

He was who I first thought of as well. He seems to be pretty much the only male lead character from Veronica Mars to not show up here as well. (Oh wait, Wallace hasn't either. Hopefully because he's having a terrific career, cos Wallace was awesome.)

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:08 (sixteen years ago)

I agree, though it's darker than F&G. In F&G, you always felt like the kids could turn their lives around and they'd probably generally turn out OK eventually, but most of the dudes in Party Down feel like they aren't really going anywhere.

The best bit was when the movie exec. was going mental calling everyone a fuck he's going to shit on and the rapper just walks out all calm and shit. <--- not a good way of describing it but ya know.

I think the rough paraphrase would be something like

RAPPER: That sounds like a lot of shit -- why don't you just call my lawyer?

i just came her to post that this show reminds me of when the office was good

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 May 2009 05:49 (sixteen years ago)

this is one of the best new shows in forever imo

i thought the season finale was hilarious - martin starr's bathroom sign gag was A+ and the shrooms lady brought constant lols

"i see lemons!"
"well that's cuz they are right here" *shows her a bowl of lemons*
"no, those are sun eggs"

also yeah the scene with kristen bell and henry was hilarious, great timing - "... i also have a kid. he's quiet though"

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 May 2009 05:56 (sixteen years ago)

ken marino plays the michael scott role really well - flag burning bit was awesome

the fact that the characters are so likable: more in the writing or the acting? i think martin starr and henry are just intrinsically likable so maybe it's the casting

also i think anybody who's worked in this kind of situation can recognize that the cast pulls off the bonding aspect of doing that type of work really well

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 28 May 2009 05:58 (sixteen years ago)

okay I just watched all 10 episodes in a row on netflix. it's great and yeah, there sure are a lot of office parallels....(espppp jim/pam/dwight = henry/casey/roman)

not sure how a tv channel I've never heard of has enough money to make shows like this?

it seems like a really cheap shoot? every episode is on one location and there are like 5 main actors + 3 or 4 central to each episode and 10 to 20 extras? nothing really happens except dialogue and cocktails

setups + characters are a bit too sitcom-like to compare it favorably to freaks & geeks, tho maybe I will feel differently as season progresses? f&g characters seemed to have a purpose beyond just setting up one liners and haha misunderstandings, party down characters are not there yet for me.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

One thing that bothers me about this show is how quickly the love story develops. The fact that she had a HUSBAND completely disappears after 3 episodes. Wth kinda marriage is that? It feels like they really weren't sure how long this was gonna be a show and needed to put the henry/casey relationship on steroids for 1st season plot purposes. It's the polar opposite of the US office in this sense - the jim and pam thing drags and drags, but also seems way more realistic imo.

iatee, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 17:49 (sixteen years ago)

marriage was clearly really troubled from episode 1!!

yeah, i like that the "love story" is a rebound fling.

also really like how casual the show is about drug use! nothing drags a good ecstasy subplot down like a boring "message"

^^^

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 17:53 (sixteen years ago)

that actually seems like a thing in vmars too--drugs/drinking/sex all pretty casual & realistic, which threw me at first but i definitely dig on

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 17:56 (sixteen years ago)

but if it had been a 'troubled' marriage, she'd still be thinking/talking/caring about it!

iatee, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 19:45 (sixteen years ago)

it's more like something she just didn't seem to have that much invested in. which is weird cause ya know, it's a marriage.

iatee, Tuesday, 2 June 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

she is thinking and caring about it. you can tell because she is doing drugs and fucking henry and having emotional breakdowns and stuff.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 June 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think that's true; it seems like it's a huge part of why she's noncommital with Henry.

Megan Mullally, the Will & Grace alum, has joined the cast of Party Down. She'll play Lydia Dunfree, a middle-aged refugee from a lousy marriage who leaves small town life to move to Hollywood where her 13-year-old daughter Escapade hopes to make it as an actress. While the younger endures the audition process, her naïve and eternally optimistic mother Lydia feels honored just to be among the show business “pros”.

I agree that it's a hypothetical bummer, but people are acting like a third season of Party Down was a given. I figure either the writing was on the wall, or something happens in season two of PD that made Adam Scott willing and able to move on. Or not, I dunno.

ô_o (Nicole), Monday, 15 March 2010 14:21 (fifteen years ago)

It would be pretty easy to write him out and replace him given that it's a show about wannabe actors waiting to get their break. I find it hard to believe that anyone would say "this show doesn't work without Adam Scott", even though he is good in it. In fact, if the network believes that it's underperforming, it might actually be a way to keep it on the air.

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Monday, 15 March 2010 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

i kinda agree, as i said upthread when Lynch left, cast turnover would kind of lineup nicely with the actual turnover at shitty food service jobs, but Scott's character is kind of the whole center/POV of the show. i think they could make it work if they just shifted the perspective over to Lizzy Caplan a little more, though.

some dude, Monday, 15 March 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

S2's first 2 eps are awesome. It's too bad they can't keep their cast members, but as long as Marino and Rob Thomas are involved it'll always be at least a solid watch.

Comcast OnDemand has two episodes, but it's the 1st and the 5th. the premiere is great but i'm now hemming and hawing about watching the latter, because i love the sense of continuity on the show and don't want to 'skip ahead' even if it probably doesn't matter. but then, it's titled "Steve Guttenberg's Birthday" so i'm probably going to watch it soon anyway.

orgy episode was the best one of the season imo -- the only thing i didn't really dig was the dressing down of kyle, because the woman's rant seemed too transparently written by a writer, if that makes sense -- kind of betrayed the style of the show & seemed kinda out of place -- everything else was pretty amazing tho, esp lizzy caplan who's been the total star of the season

i don't get that -- imo caplan hasn't really done a whole lot comedy-wise on there lately, feels more like an ensemble than ever. also trust me the Guttenberg episode really transcends any of the ones that have aired so far.

Between this and Always Sunny, Fred Savage is doing some quality cable sitcom work.

I DIED, Sunday, 16 May 2010 13:36 (fifteen years ago)

Savage has directly roughly half of all PD episodes so i don't think there was any kind of knowing nod to the Wonder Years there

Billy Crystals (another al3x), Sunday, 16 May 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

netflix watchers might be tempted to click on a recommended movie called "crashing" starring ms. caplan. as a film it is slightly more accomplished than ilx favorite "the room," but sadly without any of the gratuitous nudity. this despite the premise: genius novelist gets kicked out by his wife, shacks up with two sexy coeds after giving a talk to their writing class. the script consists mostly of lol-deep expositions of writing and writers, and running who/whom jokes. there are worse ways to spend your inebriated sunday afternoons though, and you'll definitely get some quotables out of it to enjoy with your friends. "run out of ideas, but still running..."

s2e3-5 have all been brilliant and it just keeps getting better. the writing and acting are so great! or maybe it's all down to director savage...

and yes, this last one is the best. guttenberg was perfect, as was roman's writing pal. i'm a sucker for actors playing actors acting kind of meta shit to begin with, but they killed it! the ron and henry/casey story arcs are moving along at a good pace.

mullally still hits a sour note now and then, but i think she's grown into a worthwhile member of the cast over the last few eps. hope we see uda again.

i agree

tho i think the henry stuff is even darker in a way

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 05:12 (fifteen years ago)

i mean ron just keeps trying... he's at least optimistic... regardless of his failure... henry is just so resigned to his misery, and every time he tries to make an effort, he gets crushed again and reminded why it's not worth trying in the first place. really interesting way to go with the presumed lead.

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, i thought the ep w/ j.k. simmons was even sadder than the hs reunion where ron barfed

EGOT Schiele (get bent), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 06:18 (fifteen years ago)

not sure it's fair to say this is a mercilessly grim show or whatever though.

i guess the trick of it is how it always returns you to the edge of henry's stasis each time - in this last ep especially the lack of resolution between his realism/nuanced lyfe versus guttenberg's ridiculous but fun and even (even!) roman-redemptive optimism was beautifully judged

p much. when a british person gets famous in the US (ie ricky gervais), they start saying british people h8 their success, which makes british people resent them even more.

i actually don't hate john oliver, though we do have a lot where he came from, kind of thing. funnier than off-script chris addison amirite british guys.

not sure. maybe post-luther? obv there are exceptions to the rule n e way, and his narrative was that british tv wasn't delivering good roles for black actors. but it's a tendency you see all the time.

The idea that the entire England starts getting jealous whenever someone makes it big in the US is lol'tastic. Like, all the English bankers, writers, clergy, street-sweepers, members of parliament begrudge John Oliver his minor United States success is hilarious.

wasn't the funniest ep, but it was nice to finally see roman in a sympathetic situation. i actually think some of the weakest parts of the show are when they fall back on tired sexism tropes like "the code." but even when party down isn't brilliant it's way better than parks + rec, and i'll be very sad if the show doesn't carry on after this season :( still seems doable without adam scott.

that said i also gave in and watched the finale on the starz site and it would be a fine ending at least...

If the US had a dictator we'd call him coach (Michael White), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

well, i don't think cable shows really thrive/depend on guest stars like network shows do to goose ratings, it's not like they have ad breaks to run constant "THIS WEEK ON PARTY DOWN" commercials. i mean Paul Rudd was one of the show's CREATORS and has never made a guest appearance, which is kinda disappointing not so much 'cause the show needs it but because he'd probably be hilarious. i think he's not even credited as a producer on s2 like he was on s1, although obviously he's got a lot of stuff going on so it's understandable.

Veronica Mars wasn't super critically acclaimed, was it? It always seemed to me to have a pretty intense cult following, little critical attention, and then after it was cancelled a lot more critical attention. Am I misremembering?

Mordy, Sunday, 27 June 2010 23:06 (fifteen years ago)

it was pretty well reviewed (although by the time it picked up much critical momentum it had the downside of always being measured against its first season). but i wasn't really drawing a parallel to Party Down in those terms, just y'know, same creator, also constantly on the bubble despite being the only good show on an otherwise shitty network, etc.

Simon H., Monday, 28 June 2010 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

I take it she's friendly and human in Veronica Mars? I've really only seen her in FSM and Party Down and she's bitchy and controlling in the former, and rigid and controlling in the latter.

Def. better than Lucky Louie, esp. the second episode. It's very funny, but also quite dark and affecting in unexpected ways - basically short films loosely strung together w/ bits of standup, but much better than that description makes it sound.

That must be true. I watched all the episodes on Netflix, which posted new ones the same day they aired.

I wonder what it means for a network to have shows that are watched online more than an on the actual channel. On the one hand you could say that it makes sense for the network to cancel like they did here, but I think the better solution is for them to look into making online viewing work more in their favor. I guess that's a tough one to solve in terms of making real money, but it's obvious that online consumption is where the audience is heading, so it has to be worked out eventually.

They do get money from Netflix, but Starz is kind of a low-end movie channel compared to Showtime/HBO. Most of their Netflix streaming stuff (or maybe all of it) is SD and not HD, and it's usually second-run or second-tier movies and cheaper original shows. I'm under the impression that they're able to license to Netflix because they need fewer licensing fees to begin with.

so 74k sounds about right for a viewership imo

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

I don't even really understand how ratings come into play in a situation like this where the channel has a low viewership anyway plus they make the show available right away through other means. Do they really have a way to get significantly higher ratings with a different program? I guess it kind of throws the whole original content on Starz idea into question.

well, Veronica Mars was an awesome show, the silver lining of it being cancelled was that Rob Thomas got to go and create another great show with some of the same actors. now they have a chance to do it again, maybe on a network people actually watch, if I may dare to dream.

iirc Rob Thomas had a lot of offers to be showrunner for bigger shows when Veronica Mars was on, probably will happen now too. i get the impression that people working in TV like him or Bryan Fuller who prove they can make and run pretty high quality shows whether or not anybody watches them tend to keep getting good career opportunities, probably because they're clearly good at what they do but also still affordable.

I am sad to see it go, but the ending was good enough that I can live with it.

I really liked Albrecht at HBO, and thought it was a shame he had to get on the sauce and abuse his wife in a parking lot. I don't think Starz will ever be up to the level of mid-00s HBO, of course, but I hope he finds some good stuff and trusts to see through what he can. Don't want too much more of the Spartacus style shlock, but that did turn out pretty good.

yeah, me too, actually. i adore jane lynch but the way party down was using her seemed sort of played out to me. glee is a far inferior show but she is a genius in it, i have to say. her relationship with ryan hansen was sweet, though.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but she made them look better, I thought.

Grand amiral de la marine des licornes (Michael White), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)

I think her party down character was more cheerfully oblivious than the typical jane lynch character. Has she really had a better role before PD?

symsymsym, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:25 (fifteen years ago)

role models!!!

yah i guess id agree w/ ilx cw here: lynch's character wasnt that gr8 but she lent something to the ensemble that mullally's didnt for most of s2 which i guess makes sense since theyd been thinking about/working on the original characters for so long

like in the best s2 episodes (sg bday!) mullally was peripheral to the story for most of it

Lamp, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

The way that she bro'd out w/Ryan Hansen was very funny to me; part 'I'm still hip w/the kids', part 'Let me show you kids how to do this thing.'

Grand amiral de la marine des licornes (Michael White), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

lynch made more sense, having been in movies and tv. mullaly's claim on that was kind of tangential. but i liked the one where she negoshed with her daughter, and the one where she got high.

frap your hands say yeah yeah yeah (history mayne), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:30 (fifteen years ago)

Lynch's perky shtick was a good foil for Scott and Caplan's anomie, Martin and Ryan's cool guy poses, and Ken's excruciating earnestness but she wasn't as blithe as Mullaly.

Grand amiral de la marine des licornes (Michael White), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

how long do I have to watch this before it becomes amazing? The pilot was boring for the 15 minutes I watched it.

Dude, no way, this first episode is already awesome! I can't wait to see the next ones. The only problem was that I kept *recognizing* the Veronica Mars actors. And Lizzy!

I hope the next eps are gonna be as good.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

Recognizing actors is one of the best things about Party Down imo, I love picking out old The State actors, among others!

So I think we discussed this on another thread but it's now off Netflix as well. I imagine this is some desperate, backward-thinking attempt by Starz to draw more viewers to its on-demand service.

Starz only started running original programming big time like 2 years ago, but their series version of Crash is still going (afaik -- don't know if Dennis Hopper's death is gonna change that), plus Spartacus and it looks like they've got at least 3 new shows starting in the next year or so.

According to Variety, NBC has given them a put pilot order, meaning if the pilot does not go to air, the network has to pay penalty fees. Warner Bros. TV is the studio backing the pilot. Thomas and Enbom will write the script for the with Thomas, Enbom, Etheridge and Jennifer Gwartz and Danielle Stokdyk as executive producers.

The show is similar to 'Party Down' in the sense that there's a new job each week, but unlike 'Party Down,' we actually see the home life of our main characters…It has more of a 'Mary Tyler Moore' home life/work life dynamic, except the job changes from week to week.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 10 February 2011 09:20 (fourteen years ago)

that is awesome. ryan hansen sounds surprisingly like his character:

PAUL RUDD: One of the first things we kept thinking about when we were talking about the Kyle character was how he's just kind of in the handsome business. He's in this band, and he had come up with this song called "My Struggle," all about how tough his struggles were, and we were laughing that he would have no idea that "My Struggle" translates to "Mein Kampf." He wouldn't have any idea what Mein Kampf is. And he would start singing about his situation, about how he's branded a star and put on a midnight train, and all of this Holocaust imagery, and he has no idea. And then the idea of him belting this out in front of a group of elderly Jewish people—we couldn't stop giggling about it, but it never was going to really make it into the show. And then when Jane gets married in "Constance Carmell Wedding," we were able to do it. And I love it.

RYAN HANSEN: I got that it was offensive, but I didn't really get why. So I was like, "John, break this down for me." And he told me and I was like, "Ohhhhhh. Oh my gosh! That's awful!"

Megan Mullally, who is joining the cast of the Fox comedy Breaking In, confirmed today that the long-rumored Party Down movie, inspired by the Starz series, is now a go and she will be part of it. “John Enbom is writing it right now, I’m excited about that,” Mullally said during a Fox panel at the TCA in Pasadena. After the session, she added that the entire cast is expected back with the possible exception of Jane Lynch, whom Mullally actually replaced (as a different character) after the first season. Filming on the pic is eyed for late spring/summer.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 January 2012 06:04 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know, I thought that things were wrapped up pretty well in the final episode so I don't know where a movie would go with these characters. It's like the Arrested Development movie, an idea best left alone.

Nicole, Monday, 9 January 2012 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

the series ending was obviously an ending if it needed to be, and an option to change the status quo if they got a third series.

the plan for the movie, to have them catering four parties over a year and not showing the characters' lives in between, sounds good to me.

I'm late again to this shit. This show is great, just saw my first 4 or 5 episodes last night and since today is Sunday and i don't have to do anything I'm going to probably watch all the rest of them in a row right now. Everything Ron does cracks me up, he's like Michael Scott's loser younger brother. The episode where he gives that investor $10,000 dollars is so great.

Also, LOL at Joey Lauren Adams saying "What the fuck???", i think she might say that in every single thing i've ever seen her in.

Ron is like Michael Scott + Homer Simpson. I like how any time there is an object that could possibly turn into a projectile in his near vicinity, it is naturally attracted towards him.

So I started describing this excitedly to some coworkers (martin starr had come up) in a light social setting, and ended up saying something along the lines of: It's about these people that want to be something they're not, and they can't be, and there are these great moments of crushing disappointment. It's about how life just grinds you down... at which point I realized this wasn't light social chatter and just sort of wrapped it up with "so it's a funny show. very funny."

this sort of thing happens to me more often than i'd like.

bring me all the boring parts of roman sitting around getting pissy at his internet friends on his phone while he should be plating apps or w/e

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 6 February 2014 21:01 (eleven years ago)

otm

also within the course of a film one of the characters could get tipsy, take a short nap, and be sobering up over coffee by the end

mh, Thursday, 6 February 2014 21:02 (eleven years ago)

they should be doing craft services on a movie shoot.

Thomas said a year or two ago that the movie would be four parties spaced across a year

(D1CK$) (sic), Thursday, 6 February 2014 21:23 (eleven years ago)

ok that's a good concept. gonna stay off this thread because it seems to keep lapsing into bad slash fic.

scott c-word (some dude), Thursday, 6 February 2014 21:27 (eleven years ago)

(well, there's no 'good slash fic' so that's redundant)

scott c-word (some dude), Thursday, 6 February 2014 21:28 (eleven years ago)

(well, 'fan fiction' i guess. i'll shut up.)

scott c-word (some dude), Thursday, 6 February 2014 21:28 (eleven years ago)

yeah, you shut up!

:)

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Thursday, 6 February 2014 21:34 (eleven years ago)

it's not really a stretch to do 90 minutes all taking place in the course of one night, tons of comedies have done that successfully.

this is basically my favourite genre of movie so i hope they do that.

Huh. I guess they could just write her out, or bring her in for a cameo or something. It is a disappointment but it's not the end of the world. This show is so funny.

The episode titles are up on Wikipedia but of course they could be spoilers. (Or equally not spoilers of anything. Immediately.)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 26 January 2023 22:27 (two years ago)

i don't watch very much TV at all anymore but I will still say that Celebrate Ricky Sargulesh remains one of my favorite/most memorable episodes of television of the peak prestige era

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Thursday, 26 January 2023 22:29 (two years ago)

I have no doubt this will be good-to-great but that trailer is the worst, most steaming pile of ordure I have sat through in recent memory. Exact opposite of what's funny about the show.

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 26 January 2023 22:38 (two years ago)

So you're saying you're ... not having fun yet?

I really want this trend of compressing the trailer into a few seconds that play before the trailer to stop.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 26 January 2023 23:06 (two years ago)

Josh, someone worked very hard on the trailer's trailer, so you should respect that.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 26 January 2023 23:07 (two years ago)

Imagine the person tasked with making a five second trailer that "pops."

avatár the way of watár (voodoo chili), Monday, 27 February 2023 14:32 (two years ago)

Doesn't feel like it's been 14 years since the last season, the jokes and the rhythm of this episode are just like previous seasons (unlike, say... S4/S5 of Arrested Development). Seems likely we'll get a cameo from Lizzy Caplan at the end

Vinnie, Monday, 27 February 2023 23:44 (two years ago)

Yeah, that was my feeling. She was brought up a lot.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 28 February 2023 00:30 (two years ago)

This was so much better than I expected. Alt-indie bands I fully expect to form in the coming months: Lobster Smoke, Clam Mist, Guyote.

Piedie Gimbel, Wednesday, 1 March 2023 17:07 (two years ago)

Another great episode. I lost it when Tandy realizes she's been a terrible person and Lucy fist-pumps

Vinnie, Sunday, 5 March 2023 10:04 (two years ago)

Not enough Roman so far. I am looking forward to finally meeting Escapade.

Piedie Gimbel, Sunday, 5 March 2023 10:44 (two years ago)

Ok I shelled out $9 to watch this, it's almost hilarious how trash the rest of the Starz catalog is. Not regretting it, first two eps are great. Love Tyrel Jackson Williams from Brockmire, hope Jennifer Coolidge makes an appearance at some point.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2023 19:44 (two years ago)

I could probably come up with a list of the handful of things on Starz that are worth it, but it's definitely not a multiple great shows per year network unless you're into the 50 Cent cinematic universe.

mh, Monday, 6 March 2023 19:51 (two years ago)

They had a "curated by Adam Scott" list, which was very short and still obviously stretching for good movies, lol.

change display name (Jordan), Monday, 6 March 2023 19:54 (two years ago)

For sure. The movie selection is random and often dire.

mh, Monday, 6 March 2023 20:04 (two years ago)

I am looking forward to finally meeting Escapade.

she was in season 2 and I believe was played by a very young Kaitlin Deaver.

I'll be the dissenting voice on season 3: having just rewatched 1&2, this is really lacking. Obviously it's Lizzie Caplan, but also I miss having Megan Mulally or Jane Lynch in the team on a regular basis. They both provided some balance that Saxon isn't (though I really like him too). the biggest problem is that Jennifer Garner isn't a very good comedic actress in this, at least to me.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 19 March 2023 16:42 (two years ago)

I thought the last few have been kind of half-assed, tbh, especially the mushrooms one. The "everyone takes drugs" trope is a pretty lazy well to dip into.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 19 March 2023 16:50 (two years ago)

I don't think it's bad so far but yeah, Garner is adding zilch to the show so far, it's not necessary for Henry to have a love interest at all

Murgatroid, Sunday, 19 March 2023 17:31 (two years ago)

I dunno, she's not particularly well-written, but she and Scott have good chemistry. I could see them bringing back Kaplan at the end and forcing him to choose or something like that. Or maybe not, there are only two more episodes.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 19 March 2023 17:35 (two years ago)

I'm enjoying it, it feels like Party Down, really too bad there are only 6 episodes after all this time though.

change display name (Jordan), Sunday, 19 March 2023 17:48 (two years ago)

no Kristin Bell is kind of a downer. not that she was integral but she was amazing every time she was on

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 19 March 2023 18:03 (two years ago)

i guess what I'm saying is there aren't enough women in this.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Sunday, 19 March 2023 18:03 (two years ago)

Still hoping for Jennifer Coolidge and more Mullally. I do like the chef character though.

change display name (Jordan), Sunday, 19 March 2023 18:13 (two years ago)

I’m glad we got more Roman this episode

mh, Monday, 20 March 2023 00:02 (two years ago)

This show has reached that comfort-show level for me where it's enjoyable just to see the characters even if the jokes are weak (and I agree the last two have been some of the weakest episodes). Sackson and Lucy are great additions

Vinnie, Monday, 20 March 2023 00:38 (two years ago)

I feel like there’s almost a meta bit here where Jennifer Garner is trying to reintroduce herself or pivot into this role

mh, Monday, 20 March 2023 04:10 (two years ago)

Last episode was great you’re all nuts

Evan, Monday, 20 March 2023 04:52 (two years ago)
