I've always been underweight and normally my weight stands around 125-130, which isn't much for a 6'0" man, but didn't seem unhealthy considering I always ate a lot. In the past week two people have asked me if I've gotten thinner, which I brushed off as kind of ludicrous, considering myself not to have any signifigant weight to lose. Out of curiosity I just stepped on a damn scale and found out I only currently weigh 118, which kind of scares me. There's no good reason I should be losing weight. Anyway, I really want to put weight on, which is a very difficult thing for me to do. Extra calories just make me hyperactive or keep me up at night. Does anyone have any experience with intentionally gaining weight or tips on how to do so?

sorry i don't think you can gain weight without eating more calories!
― fantazy land (harbl), Friday, 8 May 2009 01:56 (seventeen years ago)
maybe try to biggie-size your breakfast and eat constantly all day instead of in bursts so you don't get all highs and lows. i don't need to lose or gain weight but i have to do that (eat all day, not eat huge breakfast) or i feel like i will pass out all the time.
― fantazy land (harbl), Friday, 8 May 2009 01:57 (seventeen years ago)
i like the phrase "biggie-size"
way xpost to Rev: sorry, if I eat a single french fry, I gain 10 lbs, so I have the opposite problem. If "extra calories keep you up at night," you might be in a bit of a conundrum, b/c I can't really envision a way to load up on fat without consuming lots o' calories.
― Fyodor Lolstoevsky (Pillbox), Friday, 8 May 2009 01:57 (seventeen years ago)
Oh, and there's the added stipulation that I need to do this in starving student w/ no job (prob. how I ended up so thin in the first place) stylee. I know that doesn't make it easy.
xxp: I often run out of the house with no breakfast. I am so bad. :/
― cumlord jamar (The Reverend), Friday, 8 May 2009 01:58 (seventeen years ago)
yeah breakfast would help, and maybe the rest of your calories wouldn't make you hyperactive if you ate it more often. also eggs are cheap esp. if you buy them like 18 at a time!
― fantazy land (harbl), Friday, 8 May 2009 02:00 (seventeen years ago)
i believe in you, you can do this
I forget what Jared Leto did to put all that weight on to play Mark David Chapman, but it was very effective. I'll look for it & report back.

rev i have this same problem - i've weighed 115-120 lb from high school until now, and only until the past 6 months have i started gaining anything (i'm 26 now). now i'm about 125 lb. i think having a beer or two every night has played some role in my recent subtle weight gain.
yea, u basically do have to start eating more calories, b/c, uh, that's literally the only way that you gain weight. eating more calories than u burn = u gain weight. eating fewer calories than u burn = u lose weight.
basically just eat a lot more proten, carbs, fats - and none of these means u have to eat lots of junk food. eggs, avocadoes, nuts, whole grains. lots of all these things

Yeah, I'm trying to go about this smartly. Mark's list looks awesome. Proteins and carbs = good. Fats, not so much. I have made effort to eat healthier in the past year or so, but that was more about excising junk food from my diet than trying to do anything with my weight. I have felt a lot more energetic since I stopped being all fast food and coca-cola.

jho: Because I feel uncomfortable with the fact that I was losing weight from my already underweight usual state. Really, I'd just like to get back up to my usual weight of about 128. Maybe if I put on some muscle, up to 135.

cank: musically had more flair tbh
I'm 28, 5'8" and been about 115-120 since I was 18. I eat terribly and often, do not exercise and have a healthy drinking problem. My thyroid checkups have returned normal. So if you figure something out, lemme know.

― a sweet ballet dancer (ENBB), Friday, 8 May 2009 02:28 (seventeen years ago)
Same exact thing with me, only I'm 25 and 5'10". And, although I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, can I just say that the "fuck you" thing is cute and skinny people laugh it off, it's actually really fucking annoying. I've been skinny and weak for as long as I can remember, and it wasn't fun growing up and being made fun of constantly for it. And even today it sucks to be at a restaurant and just KNOW someone's going to make some stupid comment about food. I realize being skinny is some sort of goal for some people, but from my perspective it just means you feel like shit when you look in the mirror and your butt bone actually hurts when you sit for too long.
Anyway, Rev I don't have any advice. Nothing works. But if you want to get in a friendly "attempt to gain" weight competition I'd gladly participate.

rev, you really need to eat breakfast. it will make you feel hungrier during the day and therefore make you want to eat more throughout. i hate making food in the morning too (uhh i def do NOT need to gain weight, but i'm trying to eat healthier and routinely) but clif bars are a great sub for a 'proper' breakfast, or you could do what i do: i cook up a few days worth of stuff (just boring stuff like rice or pasta with a little oil and vegies and fake-meat patties or something) at night and put it into small containers for my lunch, so i can just grab it on my way out and reheat it at work.

just eat tons food is all - lifting weights will make u hungry and feel good - eat a bunch of white rice thats super cheap - buy some cheap cuts of meat and braise them chicken thighs chuck roasts some awz porks - cook a bunch of it at a time and keep it in the fridge so youll always hav something to eat - put some of that white mexican cheese on top - do some green veggies too i mean dont be totally gross - eat bunch of ice cream after - eat breakfast lots breakfast w/syrup
prob tho u wont gain that much cause yr just a naturally super skinny guy - but at least youll hav a fun project to work on
― ice cr?m, Friday, 8 May 2009 02:37 (seventeen years ago)
xps: Oh, I definitely have had huge body image issues. I'm a lot more comfortable with my skinniness than back when I would always wear several layers of baggy clothes and would never dream of wearing shorts or going shirtless in public.
― cumlord jamar (The Reverend), Friday, 8 May 2009 02:37 (seventeen years ago)
i think the prob w/getting too butthurt about the 'fuck you eat shit die' issue is that being overweight/obese has some serious social/health ramifications that being skinny doesn't (barring some underlying medical condition).
btw i'm short, so

My ex is 6 foot 5 and about 120 pounds - he looks sickly, but its just how he is. Eating a lot of junk will do nothing but screw up yr endocrine system - what worked for N was weights and pushups and eating a lot more decent food.

rev, if you want to go to Costco for cheap eggs+cheese+butter+etc, I could swing around your way on my way home (next time I drive to work, probably like Wed or Thurs next week) and we could hit the one near Edmonds. Or find one of those URM Cash & Carry restaurant supply places - they are less than a grocery for eggs especially, but still sell to the public.
Even a quick bowl of cold cereal for breakfast (pour half-n-half on it instead of milk) or Poptarts would be better than no breakfast at all.

Yeah, she stopped being able to swallow anything at all (including her own saliva) after being abused. As an emergency measure they'd put in what was supposed to be a temporary feeding tube but she'd never had it taken out and had been injecting liquid food substitutes for like 15 years. They send her to rehab where she learned how to swallow baby food but she quit after a month and relapsed.

rev i know you're lacking for time in the morning but there's this breakfast that is utterly delicious and full of healthy calories that u should try. i had at this awesome french cafe place in NYC and realized that it's really easy to make.
basically it's avocado spread on some healthy 8-grain toast or something like that. sprinkle some sea salt + fresh ground pepper + some crushed red chiles. a little olive oil + lemon juice. sooo good. this is basically what i eat every morning in the summer. has whole grains + healthy fats + protein if u get some hearty bread / nuts/seeds in it

My 2 cents. Basically I was in the same situation a few years ago. I'm 5'9 and at some point I weighted 118 lbs. It may be a good idea to go have a check up, but if it's all normal, yeah then try eating more meals. Careful with working out though, lifting weights will actually make your muscles SMALLER unless you eat significantly more protein and carbs; plus if you don't have a lot of muscle you can hurt yourself. Also if you smoke, quitting helps a lot because you get more hungry.

btw u guys following this nowiski to wed con lady story
After acknowledging that he's "going through a tough time in my personal life right now," Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki insisted Thursday that his teammates needn't worry about the arrest of a woman at his home affecting his performance for the rest of the Mavericks' second-round series with the Denver Nuggets.
On Wednesday morning, while the Mavericks were flying back from Denver after a Game 2 loss that dropped them into a 2-0 series hole, Dallas police officers went to Nowitzki's house to arrest Cristal Taylor after confirming the existence of warrants for her arrest in Texas and Missouri, according to Dallas Police Department spokesman Lt. Andrew Harvey.
Sources close to the situation confirmed to ESPN.com the warrants were discovered when Nowitzki's team of legal advisers hired a private investigator to research Taylor's background. Two Dallas television stations (KXTA-TV and WFAA-TV) have reported Taylor to be Nowitzki's fiancée.
She was booked into jail Wednesday as Cristal Taylor, but authorities in both states have linked numerous aliases to the 37-year-old, including Crystal Ann Taylor, Christian Julie Wellington, Christian B. Travino, Crystal Nobles, Christy Nobles, Kristi Briana Westerhauf, Cristal Taylor Westerhaus, Christa A. Westerhays, Deborah Jackson, Shana Mancini, Crista Santiago, Crystal Ann Santiago, Crystall Ann Taylor and Kristin L. Rogers.

― SQUIRREL WITH A PEOPLE FACE (╓abies), Friday, 8 May 2009 05:41 (seventeen years ago)
i have done this. here's my advice. be warned, it's hard tho. and you need to be committed to it.
you HAVE to exercise. this will CHANGE your metabolism, and make you hungrier. DO NOT, however do any "cardio." i suggest:
Day 1: "Push" day--do every exercise you can think of that involves pushing outward with your upper body. do them all until you get very tired and wobbley.Day 2: "Pull" day. same deal but pulling weight towards you. Day 3: Legs. same as above.Day 4: Rest
Most importantly, and above all: Eat AT LEAST every two hours, preferably more. Doesn't even have to be alot, but never let your stomach be empty. Make sure you get some protein but at this point it's not terribly important. (i assume you're not trying to be a body-builder, so any weight gain is fine.)
― ryan, Friday, 8 May 2009 06:06 (seventeen years ago)
it may not be the ideal solution but if you agree to become my girlfriend i guarantee you will gain 25% of your body weight in three months or less.
never failed so far.

Not to say you're a liar, but have you kept a diary of your food intake? A lot of people who are skinny claim they eat a lot but when you track their food intake, it appears it's much less. Also, it could very well be you move a lot more than the "average" person. I don't mean do more sports, but just fidget most of the time, don't sit still,...
I'd recommed pure glucose: that shit goes straight into the fat bank.
Urgh, me, I gained five kilos in a month or two. Just got off wagon and I def need to get back on. :-(
Another tip: get a few kids. I've forgotten to eat a lot since I got kids. No time and you're rushed.

Breakfast: Two waffles slathered in pb, a banana, a glass of lemonade
Lunch: Salami & cheese sandwich w/ mustard & mayo, turkey salad, cheez-its, vitamin water (lol)
Dinner, 3 slices of pizza, pint of beer
I'll probably be having another beer and maybe a snack by the time I sleep. I weighed myself at 122, tho that was right after eating.
― magna cum lord (The Reverend), Saturday, 9 May 2009 05:22 (seventeen years ago)
I've spent a lot of time thinking about my eating habits, and it occured to me that it was altogether typical of me to have a banana for breakfast, a cup o noodles for lunch, and a light dinner, with maybe a snack somewhere in there. I've spent the past day ramming it into my brain that that's not normal, that's what people do when they WANT to lose weight. I also talked to my sister who is in a similiar situation (as a result of a struggle with bullimia) and she commented that she had almost asked me if I'd been losing weight, too.
btw, I do not smoke

― ★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Thursday, 17 December 2009 04:47 (sixteen years ago)
That dream just seems more feasible to eat a whole lot given the quickly-edible nature of that snack.
But the more that I think about it I would love to eat ice cream snickers, ice cream sandwiches (and variations of them)n or heath bars nonstop. Or maybe sals dorritos... I could go on forever. Maybe I should make it my goal to live out one of these dreams when I get off the Atkins diet (I started it again almost a week ago).

I haven't been on any particular excersize regimen or whatever, but I'd gotten very inactive at the time I started this thread (I think that's what part of the problem was, that I was losing muscle mass) and now I've returned to a more active lifestyle.

I recommend this. Full disclosure: I cannot do a hundred pushups, and I've been doing this for at least 10 weeks. I keep skipping days, repeating weeks, etc etc. But I can do about 40-50 pushups in one go, and on a frame as skinny as mine, that much muscle looks pretty damn good. Also I've gained about 7 pounds, all of it muscle.

how much do you drink?
― kingfish, Friday, 18 December 2009 03:59 (sixteen years ago)
way too much. The problem is that most of the short-term downsides of drinking (getting sick, gaining weight, occasionally being an asshole or crying or doing something idiotic) don't really happen to me. I hardly ever get a hangover, I don't gain weight, and in general (and SADLY) I'm honestly more social and enjoyable to be around when I've had a few drinks. Of course, I'd definitely get liver cancer when I'm a bit older - IF I DIDN'T KNOW THAT THE WORLD WILL EXPLODE IN THE YEAR 2012. So you see, there really is no downside to drinking for me.

The trick is to eat while drinking, because your digestive system is too inebriated to tell you to stop. Four beers plus some cheapass pizzas, and you're set.

yeah, she wrote a book about how she realized that she didn't want to be a nun, and during this difficult time she basically stopped eating. it wasn't that she had an eating disorder as they're commonly understood, like self loathing --> relationship with food becomes disordered. it was more like she lost her appetite completely and it affected her health. she referred to it as anorexia in the book.

It was basically suicidal tendencies, born out of sudden and extreme directionlessness. She was a nun, so it wasn't like she could develop a drug habit. This was the only self destructive behavior available.

"I have friends who just have no interest in sex at all and identify as 'asexual'. That doesn't mean that something is deeply, deeply weird about them or anything, just because they live in denial of one of the two most basic things that all living creatures on the planet do."
but maybe the "deep weirdness" doesn't really go much further than lack of interest? there's a wide range of "normal" in terms of appetites for food and sex, and it makes sense that a small number of people would happen to just be outside that range.
― Maria, Saturday, 19 December 2009 15:38 (sixteen years ago)

There's a flyer in the health center at my college that I looked at once about how to gain weight healthily (relevant to my interests as I am 5'8" and weigh like 118 pounds) and one of the food recommendations was to eat "six buttermilk pancakes" for breakfast.
Which, like, who has that kind of time, much less can eat that many pancakes

― metal panda (San Te), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 04:16 (fifteen years ago)
btw, it doesn't take any time at all to throw together buttermilk pancake batter. I can shoot you a scratch recipe, or you can buy the just-add-water mix. Any time required is in heating the griddle to the proper temp, plus the eight or so minutes to cook 'em to a golden brown on both sides. The eating takes no time at all. ;-)

corey, maybe try making nuts and beans more of a staple? walnuts, almonds, peanuts, lentils, lima beans, kidney beans etc. i eat a lot of those. but i'm definitely not veg and i suspect most of my gains come from animal proteins. i'd definitely look into finding a vegan shake that isn't terrible. probably lots of options online.

also I dunno I think setting a goal weight (on the uptick) is sorta weird and unhealthy (both physiologically and from a body-image pov). a better alternative imo would be to get on a training program that makes you as strong as possible, not one that aims to make you as big as possible. any mass gains will be incidental to functional gains, but at least you'll be fit. if yr just a naturally wiry dude you should probably just get used to the idea and stop trolling ppl that have difficulty keeping weight off

i think gbx is more or less otm? i started a plan and have been good about hitting the gym 3x week for about 2mo now, after a lifetime of basically avoiding all exercize. i'm v much on the skinny side, and i can already see (slight) change in appearance and (slight) weight increases, but i weighed myself and i haven't gained anything significant. a few pounds, maybe?
i'm sure i could radically change my diet and exercise regimen, but really that's vanity more than a real goal (but maybe it's all vanity ha). i just want to get stronger and more fit and however my body does that will be interesting to see. i really doubt i'm going to get more hulked out at all.

― RU/SH (Spinspin Sugah), Monday, 24 January 2011 18:37 (fifteen years ago)
I stopped using a recipe a while back, but here's the gist:
~1 cup of flour (at least 1/2 of this should be unbleached wheat flour, the rest is up to you. I often add buckwheat flour to mine.)3/4 tsp. of baking soda1/2 tsp. salt1 large egg~3/4 cup of buttermilkoil for the skillet
Preheat the skillet to medium heat or a bit higher. Mix the flour, baking soda and salt in a mixing bowl. Add the egg and buttermilk and stir until well mixed. The batter can be as thick or thin as you prefer by varying the amount of buttermilk. It should be pourable, but not gloppy or watery.
Having a thoroughly preheated skillet gives best results. I make my pancakes roughly the size of the palm of my hand. When bubbles appear and the edges of the pancakes start to solidify, they're probably ready to flip.
Since you are trying to gain weight, serve with butter. Good toppings besides syrup are jam/preserves or applesauce.

I mean, don't get wrong, I totally had some (awesome and FREE) ice cream but a reasonably sized portion. It's just wild to me when I see really thin people eating insane amounts of food like that because if I ate like that I would literally weigh like 300 pounds.

maybe they dont ice cream that often?

i'd been lifting weights for a few months now, saw some results but not as much as i'd wanted. after some reading i realized i should probably just be eating more (something i was less than thrilled about). but the advice i found would have thrilled some people: "do nothing but eat and lift things. after weights, just watch tv on the couch - avoid cardio at all costs. eat before you go to bed..."anyways, after 6 weeks of this i gained 10 pounds! (lost 3 now because i've been sick all week tho)
xposts. so i'm at 142 now (sorry enbb)

I read somewhere that sumo wrestlers gain weight by only eating one meal a day; but it's a massive meal, right before they go to sleep at night.

― tanuki, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:22 (fourteen years ago)
plan this time is to wake up earlier than usual (~6:30), eat a big breakfast (which would be the only large meal i'd have time for) and work out an hour before work. now the only trouble is getting up that early.
― tanuki, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:25 (fourteen years ago)
why not work out for 30 min and make time for another meal with lots of calories in it?
― La Lechera, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:26 (fourteen years ago)
larger meals would probably be a good idea, it's just that more food would also cost more money.

this may require some planning and prepping on your part, but you can make better meals happen. have you ever been to the phoenix tofu company on broadway? they have super cheap high quality tofu from organically grown soybeans (it's a tofu factory) and you could throw some together with rice and vegetables and eat it whenever. you could also make lentils and rice with little sides of parsley, hot sauce, whatever you like and then eat it at room temp when you have a second.
just some ideas.
― La Lechera, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:37 (fourteen years ago)
super cheap = $1.70 for roughly 2-4 servings worth (maybe more), depending on how much you like to eat at one sitting
― La Lechera, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:38 (fourteen years ago)
i've never been — that sounds delicious. i never buy tofu because it's always overpriced at dominicks (the only actual grocery store near me)
― tanuki, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:41 (fourteen years ago)
they are open until 3sounds like your schedule is crazy, but if you have the inclination, a lot of grocery shopping can be done on the cheap on that corridor of broadway from the asian markets to the tofu co to the ethiopian market up the street. if you're feeling adventurous you could head west on devon, but it's not even entirely necessary. great places to stock up on sauces too.
― La Lechera, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 16:42 (fourteen years ago)
i am the queen of room temp food because i am cheap and afraid of the tiny ancient microwave at work.

NUTS NUTS NUTS! make up a decadent container of trail mix: unsweetened coconut, dried fruits, mixed unsalted nuts, flax seed, hemp seed, choc chips, anything else that takes your fancy. nuts and dried fruits are sort of pricey but they're also calorie-dense. bananas are good too - my new favourite breakfast is half a banana mashed onto toast. and am@nda otm with the beans and veggies and rice.
― just1n3, Monday, 9 January 2012 19:59 (fourteen years ago)
skinny people aren't always happy with their bodies a 1000 times yes
I well understand this. Before age 30 I was rail thin with my hip bones poking out and my belt pulled tight to keep my jeans up.
Good news. Not only did my metabolism change in my 30s, allowing me to gain weight, but even if this doesn't happen for you, the silver lining to being a scarecrow is you dodge all the health problems associated with overweight - and they are a multitude.
Low percentage of body fat has FAR fewer complications for your health - although it's true that nerves and brains do need fat to stay healthy, you can easily eat enough dietary fat to serve their needs.
― Aimless, Monday, 9 January 2012 20:03 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i expect my metabolism will slow within the next 10 years. until then i'll just eat as much as i can stand and lift every other day.
i just made a heaping bowl of stir fry w/ the fried tofu and snap peas i got, and sprinkled some bean sprouts on top. :)

I've started the One Hundred Pushup Challenge and boy is it hard as fuck. After the initial test I started at Week 4 and I'm pretty much dead by the last set.
These days my weight is hovering just above 140, which is about 10 lbs more than the default weight I've been for most of my adult life.
― tanuki, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:46 (fourteen years ago)
This seems useful:
http://www.freedieting.com/tools/weight_gain_calculator.htm
according to that, i should be shooting for 2955 calories per day (380g carbohydrates, 137g from protein, 98g from fats). fuuuuuck! i've been tracking my exercise and eating really meticulously, starting a few weeks ago, and i was feeling pretty good about things because i've upped my intake to about 2500 calories per day. guess that's not enough.

I would try to find a weight gain powder with a very high calorie count. The one I'm taking (Serious Mass) has 1250 per "serving" — which is basically two scoops the size of a laundry detergent measuring cup. I usually spread it out during the day (one scoop after a workout and another before bed) and have taken to mixing it into fruit smoothies.
― tanuki, Friday, 23 March 2012 01:10 (fourteen years ago)
i've been drinking protein powder concoctions every night, but that's only 240 calories (120 in the milk, 120 in the powder). and a bunch of protein, i guess.
― 1986 Olive Garden (Z S), Friday, 23 March 2012 01:29 (fourteen years ago)
yeah most are around that amount but the servings are probably also smaller. you could just drink a lot of it, but stuff is 'spensive :\

Also, get yourselves an immersion blender -- it's easier to clean than a regular blender and you can just pile frozen fruits + protein powder + flax seed + kefir + juice into a delicious smoothie and zoop it up in ~ 3 min max. I have done this every day for as long as I can remember -- like since 1998 or so? The only annoying thing about it is the shopping and making sure to always have individually portioned frozen bananas.
The one I have is Kitchenaid and comes with a plastic vessel to blend in. Much easier to clean than a trad blender.

You would not gag if you ate it all blended up with some mango, banana, yogurt (for your digestive needs), and juice of your choice. You wouldn't even know it was there, almost guaranteed. (I say almost because I don't know how sensitive your palate is, but it would take a p sensitive palate to get past mango banana yum)

This thread is very strange to me.
I play 5-a-side football 2-3 times a week lately, road cycle between 50-100 miles a week, drink only about a bottle and a half of wine or equivalent each week (even on a night out at a casino in London at the weekend I only drank a few glasses over several hours, despite friends quaffing a bottle or more each), and I still weigh just over 12 and 1/2 stone at 5'8" tall (I've been exercising like this for about a year now, and weight about 13st 4lbs previously - admittedly I've turned quite a bit of fat into muscle, but I've still got a gut).
I pretty much never eat crisps or chips (chips or fries to you Americans), cook pretty much every meal I do eat at home myself so exercise a decent amount of control over what I eat, but I do have a weakness for cake, biscuits, chocolate, etc etc, as well as big portions. However, I'm pretty good these days at not indulging anywhere near the amount I used to. I love food.
The idea of desperately trying to gain weight seems pretty alien. At university I put on a stone a year by drinking a fuck-tonne of Guinness and red wine, and existing off extravagent pasta dishes and chillis, and didn't really do any exercise other than walking for a couple of years. I'd recommend this approach!
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 23 March 2012 09:19 (fourteen years ago)
nick .. i hear you re the never ending battle re the spread.did you catch the recent horizon re 'the truth about exercise' ? apparently all you need is one minute of intense exercise .. i've been doing this myself in recent weeks and cut down food intake (just fruit @ lunch as opposed to a doorstop sandwich), and it seems to be working.the outcome all depends on whether your bodysystem is a responder to exercise to summarise : if you are in the responsive sector, then all you need is 1 minute, and if not, then doing 60 minutes will make little difference at all.the scientist who presented the docu was very negative towards the research to start with, but succumbed once the stats etc were looked into.fascinating stuff.

― lex pretend, Friday, 23 March 2012 09:50 (fourteen years ago)
kind of feel "looking in the mirror" will always be a better guide to your progress in exercise than weighing yourself though
(i have no tips, i started exercising properly - cardio & resistance - when i went freelance, just took it very gradually and not mega-seriously, but the results are satisfying. i have a vaguely regular exercise regime but no real diet regime beyond "eat kinda healthily w/r/t proteins and green stuff")
― lex pretend, Friday, 23 March 2012 09:53 (fourteen years ago)
This thread is not strange to me.
I am 6ft1", don't drink much (let's say a bottle wine a week, a couple beers and that's it on a big week), exercise is going to work and back, walking into t'town and around on a weekend, am around 12stone. When I was 21 I was 8stone thanks to intestinal problems which got operated on, so it'a full-time job eating to keep up my weight. I know in that sense I am fortunate about being a 'healthy but light' weight, it gets no sympathy from various people I know, but hey.
I was certainly prompted to eat more red meat/guinness etc, but what if you don't like that stuff? I think red meat made me more ill anyway. Anyways, it was all about the "Build-Up" 'just-add-milk' drinks back then. I don't kow if it helped much, but I do OK now.
Still, love pastas, chillimeals, thai stuff, so.

― Paul Smon (La Lechera), Friday, 23 March 2012 18:58 (fourteen years ago)
i do do that sometimes. not crazy about fruit out of the freezer tho when it comes to smoothies, and the bananas will always wind up as banana bread!
― Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:15 (fourteen years ago)
I guess I like what frozen fruit does to the consistency of a smoothie -- it's thicker, feels more substantial. And if you have leftovers you can freeze them for a late night snack. Or at least that's what I do.
― Paul Smon (La Lechera), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:19 (fourteen years ago)
question: how long is too long for fruit (bananas esp) to sit in the freezer for?
― Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:24 (fourteen years ago)
I usually go through ~ 6 bananas a week, so they never last that long. I've run out and dug around for/found/used old ones and I can't say I noticed the difference tbh. I would say indefinitely?
― Paul Smon (La Lechera), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:25 (fourteen years ago)
Also a chunky monkey smoothie (double banana, chocolate sauce, nutella, almond/peanut butter/protein powder) is a super idea for weight gain/covering up the flavor of gross protein powder.
