So, last week was the bombshell that "Davina sez the show will end in 2011", and that as BB10 will start on June 4th, and the Daily Star reckons that the show will have a "new Jade" in the "loveable Geordie" etc, and so on..

So, I thought I'd start this thread early, just to see how close the "early list" is, and so on. Past years had the lists a closely guarded secret, with the collusion of the papers who'd have embargoed lists ahead of time. Thesedays, it's more like an open secret.

Big Brother 10 prepares to launch

The 16 contestants taking part in the 10th series of reality TV show Big Brother will be revealed later.

But the eight men and eight women will be in for a shock, as they will spend their first days living in one room and eating cold porridge.

The contestants will have to earn the right to become official housemates and compete for the £100,000 prize - with the failures evicted on Sunday.

The show, hosted by Davina McCall, kicks off at 2100 BST on Channel 4.

Housemates will spend the first few days sleeping on the floor of the living room and will have no access to the kitchen or bathroom.

Big Brother will give them cold porridge to eat each day and if they want to wash, they will have to fill a bathtub in the garden from a cold tap, using a bucket with a hole in it.

'Diverse and cosmopolitan'

Once the hopefuls become official housemates, they will be given access to the rest of the house, with one bedroom for the boys, one for the girls and a bathroom.

Sharon Power, one of the show's executive producers, said the 16 had been in hiding for weeks and had no idea what was in store for them.

"Everybody is expecting to walk into a normal Big Brother house with lots of rooms and furniture and places to go, and they will actually have this one living room and the garden," she said.

No detail has been revealed about the identities of this year's contestants, but show bosses have said the youngest contestant is 18 and the oldest is 40.

Producers have also promised the "most diverse and cosmopolitan" group ever, with contestants drawn from "the four corners of the world".

First thing (of millions, probably, and I missed the first hour) that annoyed me - as the girl whose name I can't remember was having her eyebrows shaved off someone asked if she was sure she wanted to do it and she said "I've worked too hard to get this far!" Noirin turned up on The Real World: Sydney a couple of years back dating one of the contestants. They were apparently very much in love. Guess the relationship ran into some trouble once the cameras went away.

Hmmm, just watched all the profiles on YouTube, and it seems to be a more likeable bunch than usual. The only ones I wish would die are Noirin, Siavash and (especially) Karly. Freddie would make the list if there wasn't something quite charmingly gormless about him. They would appear to be going for colourful eccentrics rather than hateful twats this year, which is a good move.

I liked Sophia a lot but by Christ she would annoy me. Didn't see everyone enter - Beinazir was the first one I saw, I think - and didn't particularly care for any of the rest. I guess Rodrigo has WINNER written all over him. Sree to be this year's Jonty. Saffia will maybe be the first woman out and like the one whose name I can't remember last year will "make her children proud" by getting her baps out in Nuts within the week. Siavash = total bell-end, but they're sometimes the most entertaining.

The only one who seemed a 100% bellend was Siavash. The others had various degrees of "might be alright" about them.

ah, they all seem OK, apart from the usual Blonde leggy/booby ones.

They all seem a lot more grounded then usual. None of them* think that just being on BB will guarantee them enormous fame. Everyone* is treating the programme as a part of a wider scheme. *with the exception of Siavash, but he doesn't fall into the usual "I just have to be on BB a\nd I'll be rich and famous" pattern because he already thought that he was hugely famous even before he went in the house.

Okay I'm on board with this after watching the housemates go in. Seems a much more cosmopolitan house than usual, and they've somewhat wisely not filled the house with good looking but boring people. First impressions:

Freddie - will probably turn out to be alright, assuming he doesn't walk. Possibly a diplomatic mediator type.

Lisa - will do nothing much of any interest and be evicted first time she is nominated, about a third of the way through.

Sophie - better get used to her because she isn't going away for the next five years at least. Will probably turn out to be quite sweet, expect 'adorable' moments of utter stupidity in the diary room.

Kris - almost certainly the ringleader in any big divisive household feud, will cop off with either Sophie or Noirin early on and get evicted half way through.

Noirin - WS 09. Kind of endeared herself to me with the eyebrow-shaving thing but is probably terrible.

Cairon - winner

Angel - will follow the time-honoured BB tradition of having at least one 'wacky' one who turns out to be really really boring once inside the house. First out I think.

Karly - fucking terrible. Must go.

Marcus - will either turn out to be loved by the house or will be so irritating that he goes up for nomination every week and survives until they just give up.

Beinazir - will bring the aggro I think, will hate almost everyone in the house.

Sophia - nailed on fourth place. I'm not sure how much of that screaming I could stand though.

Rodrigo - <3 Rodrigo. He's in this for the long haul, definite Glyn-style journey ahead. I predict comedy. He might win actually. Everyone loves a Brazilian.

Charlie - I dunno, seems alright.

Saffia - Awful, must go, probably will go pretty early on.

Sree - Seems nice enough but strangely guileless, will probably be around for a while.

Siavash - knob, will provide hilarity for the first week and fall at the first hurdle.

Kris - will turn out to have a Sezer/Rex sized ego, confident he won't get evicted even if nominated because "all the ladies in the UK" will vote to keep him in. Then like Sezer he will get evicted to his total and complete surprise.

Noirin - nice on the surface, horrible underneath, will get progressively worse. Will be the most competitive/aggressive on tasks.

Cairon - I think that his "no homo" comments in his intro VT are going to be difficult to overcome. Could win, but it's going to take a bit of effort and the kind of self-awareness that most 18 year olds just don't have.

Karly - horrible on the surface, nice(r) underneath, will get progressively less cynical.

Beinazir - actually I think the producers have deliberately put her in the house as a way of saying "see? not all Muslim women are a hairtrigger ball of aggro and 'tude". I kind of see her as being like gay Canadian Richard from three years ago.

Saffia - similar to Karly, but won't be nice enough underneath to avoid an early eviction.

Siavash - he's a total knob end but I think that the public will keep him in because he's so (unwittingly) entertaining.

Huh. This is really good. The people seem more diverse and far less vile and hateful, overall (and there's no obvious alpha couple, something that has railroaded the last few series). Sort of reminds me of the first series.

Loved the bit on the Saturday morning highlights show where Marcus explained to him at length what the whole thing about "BB will not tolerate fake romances" in the rules meant, only for him to spend the next hour trying to pull Saffia in the most inept and obvious way.

LOOOL last night's eviction looked super cheap, like one day the producers might fail to round up any one at all who is interested and just give up and leave the place empty. I like the idea of a Big Brother that sort of lurches on with no live fans an, ever-decreasing audience, and a budget that gets tighter by the minute. Eventually it would be just Davina operating all the cameras and doing the narration on the highlights shows. And then when it got really bad the housemates would actually have to produce the show themselves and count the eviction votes and do all the video editing...

It would be kind of like that episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where people keep disappearing from the Enterprise but nobody finds it weird and eventually it's just Picard and one or two others roaming around this huge empty, silent ship.

What has Saffia done that's pissed Sophia off so much? I missed it over the weekend but based on last night's show it looks to me like Sophia is the argumentative one. Why is Saffia so disliked inside (and outside, judging by this thread) the house?

I think that Sophia is just suspicious and looking to ID the "bad" housemate, seemingly solely on the grounds that in a group of that size "someone" has to be two faced. Which of course is ridiculous, it's just Sophia being paranoid. Or rather she wants to think of herself as more mature and clever than the others, but instead she just comes across as a backstabbing bullshitter - someone who claims to hate two-facedness, but is behaving exactly in that way.
Saffia herself actually seems much nicer than she did in her intro VT - the cynicism is just a front that's starting to go away. Same also to some extent for Karly. Sophia is the real disappointment, because initially she seemed like she'd be a great housemate, but she's turned out to be the one who is (intentionally or otherwise) splitting up the group into two factions.

And I know that the faction split happens every year, but this time it's particularly unwelcome. Usually one clique has all the clueless tools and aggro merchants in it. But this year there isn't anyone like that*, I want to see these (for the most part) interesting people interacting without any fake high school bullshit.

Disagree. I think Noirin would have preferred backup from some of the less rapey housemates, but none was forthcoming because the two vultures circling around her kept them away (and also nobody else probably noticed she'd left the room). Eventually she just decided to take what she could get. I think she was genuinely upset (she's very pretty and has kind of been lost in the shuffle) and Marcus saw it as an opportunity to score points while Sree saw it as an opportunity to score.

I think that Marcus wholly believes the "cool" stuff - in this sense he's a bit like Mario from last year. Except that's a bit unfair as Marcus has a slightly better grasp of reality. I have the feeling that this "cool" thing is something that Marcus has to believe as part of his self image, it's like he thinks of it as the keystone and without it nothing else works. It's a pity he doesn't talk at all about his background, he's 35 and he doesn't mention anything about the past. Neither do the others much, but with everyone else (aside from Angel) I get the feeling that they're happy to talk about bits of their life within the context of regular conversations.
Maybe I'm trying to map this "Wolverine image" onto Marcus too closely, but it seems like something he's latched onto - Wolverine not knowing anything about his past translates as a reason for Marcus not to talk about his?

The new eviction night format is terrible. Why anybody thought Davina needs the assistance of elite thinkers like Vanessa Feltz and Iaiaiain "Where's My Career Gone?" Lee god only knows. Davina was interview on Friday Night With Johnathan Ross and it was mentioned in passing that the viewing figures are way down. Also I agree that the new interview format sucks. The evictee gets a slightly longer interview, but so far both Sophia and Cairon have been overshadowed by the guests. Sophia's was better because one of them was the blonde psychologist so we got some interesting insights. I can't get E4 here, but it appears that the follow up programme immediately afterwards is a bit of a shouty shambles? I think what they should do is have an old style one on one interview first, then this Newsnight style round table bobbins afterwards on E4.

I'm assuming odds are based on how the betting is going. The series being axed early was 4/1 last week and is now almost 2/1 so there must be money going on it. Whether it's money being placed by anyone in a position to know anything is another matter.

I watched the opening night then a few times after that I switched it on and realised I simply couldn't be arsed with it. I haven't heard anyone at work even mention it, including the guy who auditioned for BB at least 4 times.

I think that the problem is that the producers have deliberately avoided picking aggro housemates, which is good, but on the other hand the housemates they have now are just boring. I dislike the "journey" cliche, but there isn't anyone in there who is going to be changed by the BB experience. Sree and Marcus are both too arrogant and full of themselves to ever change. Rodrigo and Cairon are/were both on paper the archetypal "young kid who grows up a little bit" (see Glyn) - but they're both a lot more adult than most 18/19 year olds. That was particularly noticeable with Rodrigo last night during the drugs argument with Freddie/Halfwit.

The way I see it, the show is stuck in the same doldrums that it was during BB4/5/6, when the main complaint from the press was that "it's just a bunch of people sitting around doing nothing". But additionally now there's the wider use of MySpace/Facebook/Twitter/etc.. If you want to know what some famous person is eating for breakfast, you can, so why tune in every day when you can do this online?
There needs to be a proper task every other day, of the same complexity and difficulty as Ol' Bamboo. Something that the group will only pass if they work together properly. There's the tension there, the mix & clash of personalities, but without having to resort to stupid stuff like the random enforcement of petty rules (which has actually gone down a lot this year).

BB5 was the best one, they really hit the jackpot with the chemistry and tensions between the different housemate. That's a pretty difficult thing to do and it hasn't worked this time round - there's zero chemistry really between most of them this year. And not really that much tension either.

Also the whole *idea* of BB has just become cringeworthingly, embarassingly uncool. Even among people who don't usually care about things like that. I remember being out with workmates around the time of BB3 and people used to go home from the pub to watch the eviction. That doesn't happen any more.

I do miss the halcyon days of having a whole week to perfect building towers of sugarcubes, housemates who read books and played guitars and acted like humans rather than 24/7 auditionees. I didn't watch much of last year and I haven't watched a single bit of this year. I didn't even really watch this year's Celebrity BB either. It's beyond played out now. Everyone knows what's expected of them, and I would love to see it turned back to what it was, with normal people. The Shilpa/Jade CBB was the last straw - some interesting people in there, and all ruined almost from the off by introducing artifical divisions to force conflict. I've read this thread in the hope I might be tempted back into watching, but I'm not convinced that they've gone back to enough basics for me.

agree with matt and ailsa. i suppose the problem is not really with the producers(for the main show, at least)*, we'd be complaining whether they were dull as ditchwater or fighting like cat and dog. it's just a dead format. would throwing alcohol at them help the show for this year?

The psychologists - even the lightweight ones - were a big part of making Big Brother what it was. Cut them out and you've not got much different to a Soap.

There's a critical mass of people watching that a show like this needs; my happiest tv memories are of watching BB5 with my housemates, and talking about the contestants we were really talking about ourselves - this is what I care about, this is what I find redeems anything, this is what I think can never be forgiven. This is my England. When you're watching it alone it doesn't have any of that - I think the same conversation has pretty much sprung up around the apprentice, which suits it less well unfortunately.

That seems pretty much OTM, especially if you factor in what snoball said about lolWeb 2.0 and the Big Brothering of people's day to day lives.

Nowadays it seems that if you want to watch reality TV there's always some series in progress regardless of the time of year. It's like the TV equivalent of furniture sales.

The thing with the Apprentice is that you get approx 0.001% of what these people are like when they are all in the house together, which is what might make it fun (even though Phil hearts Kate was zzzzzzzzzzzzz). With Big Brother it was fun seeing preconceptions shattered, watch people redeem/ruin themselves in your eyes when they were being watched all day every day. When you only get the edited bits, like in the Apprentice, rather than the voyeuristic aspect of live feeds, wall-to-wall E4 coverage, etc, you're as well trying to give a shit about the contestants on Celebrity Masterchef or summat.

So, it's turning into a 2 camp Sree vs Marcus thing.

Marcus's problem is that he's a bit slow on his feet. The last four days worth of footage is of him lying face down with a pillow folded in half under his chin, staring at the wall. He alternates between doing that, repeating the same "compliments" to Noirin, and arguing with Sree. What he should have been doing during this time was forming a stronger bond with someone, anyone, against Sree. Marcus could have easily joined forces with Siavash. That's just about the only setup that would work. Siavash is lonely, man, and he can get people's ear. It's possibly only Sree that ignores Siavash as a matter of course.

Marcus needs to make good with Lisa and fast, unless her temper is for show... I kind of thought her and Marcus may have silently come to an agreement to not agree after their first fight... We don't know the conditions under which the tests were taken - exam conditions or in a noisy production office? Also the type of test matters - a mixture of types or mainly verbal/word based? This makes a difference, particularly as English isn't the first language of some of the housemates (this has an effect even if the person speaks English very fluently).

Noms today, I think the 'announcement' is going to be live, today.

This is a contributing factor to falling viewing figures - C4 keep messing around with the time of the highlights show (10PM last night, 9PM tonight), and other programmes like this live nomination are scheduled too late. Maybe they are hoping to boost midweek ratings, but who is going to stay up until midnight just to hear a bunch of people going "er..."? Except me, because I have no life...

Last night on the live feed, Marcus thanked Siavash for letting him stay another week, although Siavash admitted that he would have picked himself if he was allowed.

Marcus alarmingly came off well again last night by being one of the only people with enough courtesy to patiently explain to Angel why she was alienating her housemates, without judgement or hysteria. Then there was the whole Sree racing Siavash around the garden thing, where Sree refused to acknowledge that he had a; lost and b; pledged to give Siavash his booze if he lost. Like a 9 year old.

If Freddie is so clever he should see that the same five people keep voting for him no matter what (should be obv).

The whole, 'begone, I've finished speaking to you' thing I've seen Kris do to Freddie over and over again is standard clique-bully behaviour, but he's quite socially cunning to do that girl shit as a man and have a lieutenant in Charlie, who seems personable enough to get away with selfishness by calling it a bit of fun. Lisa's voice turns my stomach. I think that Marcus, even though he beat Lisa in an argument early on, realized it's better to just lie on his bed with a pillow under his chin and wait for the whole thing to blow over. He looks a little lost, as does Siavash. I think they're bored and isolated and even the tasks don't bring anyone together because some of the housemates are clearly not even worth talking to.

The point made above about Kris being worse than Rex is absolutely spot on. Rex was a saint compared to this plank and he could make you a nice meal and talk about his tacky restaurants. His hair was really fascinating too, as was his creepy relationship with his girlfriend. I seem to remember him being a total bully, but in a more entertaining to watch way.

Siavash is by far my favourite housemate; from the first show I thought he was going to be a posing dickhead, but he's actually really, really nice and seemingly up for anything, no matter how ridiculous - witness the incident in the diary room where he was dressed as a barrel with a chicken on his head. I don't think anyone else in the house could have retained such dignity while also looking as if they were having fun.

I sort of feel I'm getting all the information I need from this thread and don't need to watch it. It's faintly reassuring.

Apart from Siavash's funny antics you're really not missing anything at all.

Karly's just one of those people who has been encouraged as a moaner because she's very, very funny with it; the problem with people like that is they get carried away and are easily steered by people who are colder bullies. Also in re nerds, the real players (Lisa, for example) tend to provoke disturbances with people they dislike on Mondays. Then they moan about two or three people until they have to give nominations, when they name two off the shortlist of miscreants in a seemingly legitimate way. Kris is nasty and while just hatefully rude to his face, the specific stuff said behind Freddie's back and the posh voice thing, argh. It's maddening; Kris wouldn't be allowed to do that to Sree, and nobody else would imitate Freddie if he stopped.

If this clique are totally deluded, one way to know for sure is if Kris or Lisa start on Siavash, who's sussed them both. One good thing about West London fashion kids: they know how to take the measure of scenes. He is waiting for Kris to order someone that bit too far. Noirin is being nice to Kris and might be even better at fucking him over.

The way Siavash is reading the house is a treat. Saw him the other night nodding and sympathising with Halfwit as he launched into one of his "I'm so clever, I know what everybody's up to" semi-clueless dissections. Then Siavash went into the diary room and analysed exactly what Halfwit's problem was to a T. I do think they'll go after Siavash eventually but I'd love it if the demographic shifted enough to get a direct Kris/Halfwit head to head. Think it's time to inject some new housemates, really.
