"Eagle" is absolutely gorgeous, better Pink Floyd than Pink Floyd ever managed. But it doesn't send you back to The Imaginary the way "Bang-A-Boomerang" does.

thanks to Matt P. for his post as well. I think Pride weekend happens to fall on the same weekend when I have to go to this one class as a consequence of my DUI thing. i think what i meant to get at, was that it seems really emblematic to me of the complexities of iran, in a way that the us media portrayal tend to avoid. the war-mongering, anti-semitic, reductionist portrait of an aggressive potentially nuclear state is plastered all over the place, but internally it's this constant coexistence/clash/tension between traditional values of the revolution and a modern, educated, young state. which is how we end up with the protests (revolution? too soon to call it that, i suppose) over the latest elections, but the divisions and contradictions have existed unacknowledged by the west for a long while.

this isn't the place for iran talk anyway, and i need to really catch up on what's been going on today before i write stuff like that ^^^ anyhow so i don't get rightfully called out for making unjustified broad statements.

i've also started plucking out the random greys that pop up in my brows, 6 or 7 hairs in each, although i know i can't continue to do that forever.

OK, so the wedding was very much an Assembly of God wedding. Many hands raised in the air, much shoutings of "amen!" Thankfully no one spoke in tongues. Even more thankfully, the officiator, while making much MUCH ado about man+woman, didn't underline it or make a winking addendum about how God's army should march against gay marriage or anything. So anyway this is what I came up with today in my deep thought, and I'm probably preaching to the converted but I think it's important to stress that no one WANTS to change genders. It's not a CHOICE. Just as no one WANTS to be gay, there is no CHOICE, it's not a "lifestyle". The decision to change genders comes when life has you up against a cement wall and it's the only way to get out. One tries to avoid it. Some people think transgendered people are brave or courageous, but in a way that's bullshit, it's all about survival. If you're like out there drowning in the ocean, what do you do? You try to swim as best you can right? Any human being does what they can to survive. That's all it is.

I have a good DJ friend, straight but very open minded, probably could see him sleeping with a guy someday, in fact, and I haven't quite been able to explain to him that these things, being transgendered or being gay are not CHOICES.

And if you'll allow me one more post for the time being...

It's suddenly struck me that you know, I didn't get into this whole thing so I could tell people I was transgendered. I got into this thing in order to say to people "I am a man". Well, when they look at me, that's what they see now, no question in their minds. But I kept quiet about it for ten years. I didn't tell anyone about my past because I didn't have to. But then something happened and I just couldn't deal with keeping quiet anymore. So suddenly I find myself saying to people "I'm transgendered" and I thought today about how absolutely crazy that is. I'm a man, I'm not transgendered. I'm just a man, plain and simple.

And sometimes I feel this great conflict because on the one hand I want to talk about it now, and be honest with people, but another part of me does NOT want to talk about it all. And when I was trying to stay sober Friday night, I felt a lot of anxiety about that conflict. But at least I figured out it was a conflict.

So, I've been thinking about how I'm not really excited for SF Pride this weekend, and why that might be, and can't come up with any reason other than my intense dislike of forced pageantry. I don't like feeling obligated to get drunk and party, I don't like wandering around vast public expanses filled with unattractive half-naked people, and I especially don't like feeling as if I'm a freak of a faggot because I don't enjoy these things the way so many other faggots do.

So tell me, is there soemthing wrong with me? I'm well beyond self-hatred etc. I embrace my sexuality and like it fine. But I don't get why I should have to fucking celebrate it all the goddamn time.

i generally have similar feelings, table, but watching the providence parade this past weekend, i had a moment where I felt that pride was actually a good, positive thing -- it was the procession of youth pride inc, which is a community center and safe place for lgbtq kids, and it was kinda amazing to see like 300 of these kids hollering and smiling and receiving cheers and applause -- i dunno, it just struck such a huge contrast to the parade floats commissioned by the gay clubs or the dealership-sponsored bmw's toting the imperial court or any of the other bullshit interest group parade entrants

So they react, as they react to many things, with a pose of bored indifference. Which is, of course, infuriating: There’s nothing duller than a young gay man who ornaments his ignorance with attitude and whose curiosity about the world doesn’t appear to extend past his iPod, certain that anything not already within his firsthand experience is by definition antiquated. But once we start blaming gay twentysomethings for not having gone through what we did, we turn into sour old reactionaries telling ourselves self-flattering lies about how misery builds character. Worse, we may in fact be doing damage. Lots of stuff happened, tonight. You're the one...you're the one who used to be a woman!" and I said "yeah" and he said "wow but you totally look like a man!" He said "you must have found in your heart you were a man!" I said "yeah" I was totally embarassed about it, but he made such a big fuss. He said he was straight and didn't manage to get any chicks in the other side of the club. I hugged him when I left. I was so touched by what he said that I didn't feel like I needed to go home with anyone. It was sweet. He couldn't get over the way I looked.

Actually I still have a story to tell about the Who from a couple years ago.

What happened was this: I flew down to San Diego to see The Who because they mean a lot to me and I'd never seen them before and I had the money to do it (I think this was May...2007). Okay, well a few hours before the gig, two men on the street (one with long hair, both of them looking sortof shabby/homeless) asked me "how do we get to the Who gig?" well I told them exactly what streets they needed to take (it was a short walk) and then as they walked away, one of them shouted back at me down the street "good lookin'!" I mean here I was, and one of these two ragtag homos...had made a pass at me. I was so flattered.

But then what happened was I went to the gig a few hours later and The Who did this song called "Real Good Lookin' Boy" which is partly about Elvis. And I didn't know this song at the time because it only appeared on a compilation of Who stuff. And I flipped over this song later, and how proud I was to be complimented as a good looking man by some meaningless, hobo homosexual on the street.

Yeah, gold coast was definitely my fave. At one point they interrupted the ballgame to play Lil Suzy's "Take Me in Your Arms" music video, and then they cut back to the game. Pretty much perfect.

just realized i made the party last night sound far more noxious and student-y than it was. it's not as bad as it sounds.

Toronto, on the other hand...got dragged out to Fly on Friday (last week, not this weekend), which is apparently where they filmed Queer as Folk (admission: which I have yet to see any of). Honestly, felt a bit like a time warp. Tons of house music, which I rarely hear in Montreal, tons of drag shows, and I Will Survive three times in two days. Music wasn't awful, people were cool, but the overall vibe was very...uniformly protein-shaked and frosted-tipped and fake-tanned and so on. There's a debate here somewhere about whether I'm actively put off by the uniformity, or just by the fact that I don't conform to the established standards.

Buddies was Saturday, which was more laid back - apparently it's a queer theatre during the week and has club nights to fundraise. You could tell this was the case because they didn't have any remixes of anything, and cross-faded, but didn't bother beat matching - it was essentially an iPod playlist. Also, had one or two drag sets during the evening. Curious - to what extent is drag a big part of the scene in your respective cities? I feel like in Montreal it's present but not HUGE, whereas in Toronto it felt really....central, somehow. Or as one of my friends put it, "the drag queens rule the Village here." On balance, good weekend (especially because of NXNE) but I wouldn't want to stick around forever.

Weird, I've been thinking about the bromance thing a lot recently from hanging out with some of my best friends and also being around California's many skateparks, doing a film thing.

My best male friends are pretty overwhelmingly straight, but except for the thing with good friend (and ilxor) many moons ago, I haven't had feelings similar to J0rdan's. I sleep in the same bed as a lot of my straight male friends all the time, no problem. Hell, happened a couple times in the past week! I think that it comes down to the fact that I stopped thinking of my best friends as sexual objects, and more as just the people I rely on. Sure, I've thought about pouncing on a couple people, but then I sort of snap out of it and am like, "This is stupid. You don't want to fuck your best friend-- even if you were straight, you wouldn't want to do such a thing."

That said, my straight male friends and I joke about sexual shit all the time. Last Friday, after a long day of filming and whatnot, my friend T0m and I took a nap together, and when I woke up and walked outside, I joked to my friend S3v3 that Tom would be out in a minute, he was just wiping my cum off his mouth.

otm, thru school and university i crushed on a fair few of my str8 guy friends, which i couldn't imagine myself doing now. back then i tended not to think much beyond "omg you're so hot", plus i think my friendships are deeper these days so it'd be weirder to transgress them - 4.5yrs after leaving university and i'm shocked at how few of my friends from then i keep up with regularly. also, str8 dudes at university are much more likely to reciprocate in terms of experimentation than, i'd guess, str8 dudes in their mid-20s.
