congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 11 June 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

donuts vs bagel vs pasta

cheerios are good but as an answer it's like saying the best drink is water when the answer is clearly beer

pasta is good drenched in delicious sauces but I prefer other pasta shapes

bagels are grand, especially in the NYC/NJ area, plus their inherent breadlike versatility is a strength

but have to take the homer simpson option here because pastries in general are my foodstuffs weak spot

n/a otm re: donuts -- they can be amazing but somehow seldom are

whereas the bagel is just brilliantly conceived, seriously, in so many ways: longevity, texture, portability, ability to go with other foods, just really well done

nabisco, Thursday, 11 June 2009 18:40 (sixteen years ago)

although now that I think about it, I have actually had one or two donuts that honestly would have been improved by a whitefish spread

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 11 June 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

bagels v pasta. would never pick a sweet food - u can't live on that shit and get sick of it too quickly

i basically can't eat sweet foods by themselves, or in any kind of abundance. i feel shitty afterwards. stomach ache, shaky, then i have a sugar crash.

sometimes i look back and realise my last like six meals were bagels, just because they're so flexible; they're a really good breakfast, a nice light snacky lunchtime fixture, and they're good when you just need to eat in the evenings so have to grab something fast. this isn't even bagels with spreads or anything: just bagels. though they are the quintessential soup accompaniment. the variety of them, especially tipping into sweet cinammon/raisin, pumpernickel/raisin (MMMM TASTES LIKE HONEY) territory, gives them a whole other context to sit in.

In the past I have watched Paula's show because I got a kick out of her and until now felt she genuinely cared about her public. However, when I caught this episode I was horrified. Paula has a HUGE following and the message she is putting out there, not only to adults, but to our youth is truly irresponsible and harmful. She is basically sanctioning the 'anything goes' philosophy regardless of how adversely it may affect our lives. I will never watch her again.

but i could have a good bagel for breakfast every day and that would be fine. then i could have a bagel sandwich for lunch. for dinner i could have a soup w/ a bagel on the side.

^^^Pretty much my diet.

If you eat an egg-bacon-hamburger-sandwich-on-a-donut the way I eat bagels, you will definitely be worse off for it. But come on, a Lady's Brunch Burger once every couple of months isn't going to hurt anybody. I bet it is similar in flavor profile and nutrition to chicken and waffles. (NB: I am pretty sure the LBB would make me feel very ill for a variety of reasons but I am totally for it in principle.)

Also a raw deal for Cheerios -- looking at the results, I realize there are definitely weeks where I eat way more Cheerios than bagels

LOL my hometown's historical society has more on Nordic Ware, inventors of the Bundt pan, than the Coen bros. They write:

Founder David Dahlquist had created the pan in 1950 based on the specifications of two Jewish women from the Minneapolis chapter of Hadassah, who wanted to make an old-world (German) bund cake. Bund meant “a gathering of people,” but other connotations led to changing the name to Bundt. Starting in 1971, Pillsbury made cake mixes specifically formulated for the Bundt pan. Nordic Ware could hardly keep up with the demand for pans.

*Bund were 0_o racist German-American clubs in the '30s, in case people have never heard of this.

I will grant you, Indian savory donuts (which I have never eaten! a crime!) and cider donuts (which are seriously amazing) are two extremely compelling pro-donut arguments.

I still vote bagels, though. I eat so many bagels, you guys. It is like my staple food. Also, once when I was a kid, my father woke my stepbrother and me up in the middle of the night to take us to the 24-hour Mr. Donut that had just opened down the highway from our rural, unincorporated bend in the road, just for the novelty of it, and I'm still holding a pretty serious grudge against donuts because of it.
