When all the cacti are in bloom
Getting invited to pool parties by retirees

This is a poem, obviously.

I would like to say that I see the mini golf courses that look like actual golf courses much less, and so appreciate them. I especially like the very minimalistic mini golf courses that fit in very small areas and are made up of little more than rectangles and blocks of wood, plus maybe one loop-de-loop.

Rollerskating, especially at a rink, is still fun. Only problem is they don't play booty music and jamz anymore. No En Vogue.

Going to tiny museums dedicated to unusual things - that reminds me of an early episode of The Daily Show, back before they went totally political & used to seek out insane/folksy people to "interview." Most of the segments were mean-spirited & left a bitter taste, but there was one guy who transcended their attempts at mockery thru sheer singularity/awesomeness: I think his name was Herman Abrams (don't know how or why I remember that) & he had transformed his country home into a museum of mundane artifacts from his life, all of which started with the letter "B." Everything was classified alphabetically in rooms, rows & columns: batteries, bells, (stuffed) birds, bottles, bows, buttons, etc. I don't know if his museum is open to the public or not, but I want to go!

I keep finding references to a Tesla museum in Colorado Springs when I search, but no website for it. I used to sell equipment to Los Alamos, and one of the engineers there told me about the Tesla barn. I like the slappy slappy noises the paint makes when it goes on the wall, and the squishy feel of the paint on the brush. It's much more sensual than drawing, painting is. It makes me happy.

i draw heh. painting overwhelms me, i just can't get my head around how one makes what they want to see with all that (i know that's not the type of painting you're necessarily describing, but for example), the same way someone being able to direct or light a film just mystifies me.

is juiceless??? (tremendoid), Sunday, 28 June 2009 07:40 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not normally a painter at all, I usually draw or do computer graphics (lots of photoshop airbrushing) so painting is a bit weird and a bit frightening and there's no eraser or ctrl-z so it's a bit scary. But the physicality of it is fun. It's getting past the fear barrier to make such huge marks.

I don't know what I'll do if I ever have to sell this house.

I keep finding references to a Tesla museum in Colorado Springs when I search, but no website for it.

That Colorado Springs museum went bankrupt in 1999 along with the International Tesla Society organization that was keeping it afloat. I visited it in 1992 and it was a pretty ramshackle affair, but with a definite charm. If anything it was more of a junkyard clubhouse for free energy/perpetual motion fanatics, conspiracy theorists, and other Enlightened Deviants who were all charged up by the mainstreaming of fringe culture. Every couple of minutes someone would fire up a Tesla coil and the lights inside would dim. Someone would hand you a fluorescent bulb and it would light up. Cool place... Make Magazine crossed with Fortean Times.

Adding to the list...

Tiny aviation museums that are nothing much more than a "Glenn Curtiss Slept Here" sign and a pile of junk airplanes in back
Any nature documentary that shows a bear diving for fish in a river.
Pad Thai with shrimp
Looking at old pictures/movies of Los Angeles and recognizing where it was filmed (and what buildings are still left)
Current season of Burn Notice
Noticing that a car is driving better after you spent the afternoon working on it.

I like Turkish food for the same reason I like painting - lots of sloppy wet stuff you scoop up with a paintbrush/pide bread and try to get on the wall/in your mouth. I've just discovered this stuff called Ajvar (spelling?) which is, like, SULTAN of sandwich spreads. Except it's more fun to just try and dip the pide in the jar. I will just start upending it over my mouth soon. FUN FUN FUN.
