"a brigade a month," my ass. But you suspected that was a lie, right?
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=106178806
Tom Ricks, who has written two books on the war, told NPR's David Greene that he doesn't think that life in Iraq will be that different for the American military....
"This is not the first time the Americans have tried to transfer security responsibility to Iraqi forces. They've tried it several times. It has not worked several times," Ricks reminded Greene.
"The question now is, are Iraqi forces up to the job? And the answer is: Nobody knows."
And, Ricks says, President Obama "has broken more campaign promises on Iraq than in any other area." He's keeping troop levels the same and is looking at getting the troops out rather slowly.
Ricks also calls Obama's promise to get the combat troops out "a meaningless phrase. ... There are no noncombat troops in the U.S. military. There is no pacifist wing of the military."
He says troop levels will need to remain the same through Iraqi elections next January, then the administration plans to draw them down by about 10,000 troops a month starting in March.
"That means next summer is going to be a point of maximum vulnerability," he says. "Because you take the troops out in the beginning from the easy places, but the deeper you get, the more you have to take them out of the riskier places — or the places where the Iraqi troops are less reliable.
"So actually I think this summer will be a long, hot summer in Iraq, but 2010 will be even more difficult."
― Dr Morbius, Thursday, 2 July 2009 11:29 (fifteen years ago)
not sure if ricks is pissed that obama's broken his promise, or that he isn't pulling troops out faster, or that he's going to pull them out too fast.
He's keeping troop levels the same and is looking at getting the troops out rather slowly. [...] He says troop levels will need to remain the same through Iraqi elections next January, then the administration plans to draw them down by about 10,000 troops a month starting in March.
"That means next summer is going to be a point of maximum vulnerability," he says.
if he kept his promise and pulled out a brigade a month, that would make this summer, in fact, any time he did it, the 'point of maximum vulnerability'.
maybe he should just pull all the troops out over a weekend so that he can have kept his promise, probably the right thing to do.

Morbs, what the fuck do you want these voters to do – ask for their votes back? There's plenty of complaining by Obama people on the political threads. I didn't vote for him because I knew he'd waffle on gay rights and showed too much inclination towards imperial greatness, but you don't see me getting sanctimonious about it. If they don't like him, they can vote for a socialist in '12 or stay home watching Bergman films on public television.

No, he doesn't get a pass. What he gets is a panoply of information that you and I just don't, while also seeming to seek info from outside that loop. Iraq didn't just hang there as if in aspic, unchanging, between the election and now. To think that day-to-day stuff on the ground there doesn't impact on what troops go where and when is as unreasonable as expecting Obama not to react to it, or change tack.
I was hoping the DADT/DOMA stuff would get sorted out but w/moar GOP affairs, it's cold of me but when they have no leg to stand on their own perceived morals issues, could get both revoked easily.
Also good meme: the Fort Worth southern Stonewall thing is a gay-panic form of Jim Crow.

Morbs, you're being disingenuous to C&P that line as if there's no follow-on.
Personally, when I'm voting for a president/supporting a candidate one HUGE thing I'm looking for is the person from the available field who'll best face the bureaucratic juggernaut of vested interests that keep us in idiot wars, fossil fuels and Christian-bigot social Darwinism. I am willing to give Obama the benefit of the doubt on his DADT/DOMA timeline *and* Iraq because I think he was the best candidate available to process and deal with whatever's thrown at a Democrat in office by his own party and the GOP. In some ways, he's vexing the GOP beyond my wildest dreams. I tend to think counterintuitively around what they're doing in DC but what I would posit is that bi-partisanship is a bit of a canard and that what O is looking for is non-partisan support around social programmes and values issues. MInd out also that the top brass who are (apparently) standing between 75 per cent of the US and the repeal of DADT are feeling the awesome powah of being refuseniks are probably not from our peer group or Obama's, to say the least.
― going vogue (suzy), Thursday, 2 July 2009 14:36 (fifteen years ago)
geez, his vexing of the GOP has zilch to do with his performance and all about their selling of his "identity" as a socialist/ Muslim/ treasonous black man.

I don't think Iraq pullout involves super-special-secret confidential information we can't imagine or don't have access to -- just a more detailed level of information about where things stand and what the capabilities/possibilities are. Like I said, I don't think any realistic person imagined that any campaign plans on Iraq could be taken as anything other than general and highly contingent agendas, and the decision to be made was between different approaches/philosophies, not guaranteed events.
^ If you mean in terms of actual opinion/goals, I'd say you're right about that -- so really what exactly is your rhetorical goal with a thread like this one? Like if you have actual different policy opinions than the bulk of ILXors, I don't get why you wouldn't talk more about those actual policy issues, rather than tending to talk about voting or how much faith people should have in Democrats or all these things that assume we share the same objectives and are arguing about how best to accomplish them. Sometimes I feel like you're telling us "hey, a hammer is a horrible tool for that job, use a screwdriver," when really the difference of opinion isn't about the tool, it's that we're holding nails and you want screws.

I do think that unless Obama feels he will lose votes next time, he will continue his strategy of talk left, govern center, and the "feet to the fire" strategy would be people making it known - by organizing, I guess, online - that they will stay home or vote third party if important things like torture, women's reproductive rights not getting cut out in the health care bill (presently there's some profound weaseldom going on on that front), DADT, and other "I voted for you because your line on this was consistent with my beliefs" issues aren't addressed both practically and rhetorically.
I do not consider this petulant teenagerism, and I know Dan at least has no issues with the "I'm stayin' home" response, so I'm cool, if, yeah, disappointed - when a guy says stuff that sounds way awesome, it's always gonna be disappointing to me when his actual work doesn't measure up to his spoken line. No shock to anybody that J0hn D. has naive expectations in that area I guess, nor is that likely to change; my optimism, naive or no - my tendency to hope & believe people will do as they say - is too valuable to me to trade it in for realism; I don't think I could vote at all if I became a realist. I wish Obama would give everybody many awesome reasons to reelect him though!!
xpost Also can we remember its been a whopping 6 months of his presidency so far? I mean Rome not built in a day etc etc
yeah but one has the lurking suspicion that this will be one of the reasons given to reelect him you know? "he needs a second term to get the stuff done you were hoping he'd do in the first one"
― worm? lol (J0hn D.), Thursday, 2 July 2009 17:24 (fifteen years ago)
Umm the two problems with Morbs's tone are, in reverse order of importance
(a) the rhetorical suggestion that anyone who doesn't agree with his stance must be braindead, soulless, or deluded in order to believe anything else
(b) the fact that he never actually talks about what his stance is, and just enjoys baiting people over their not agreeing with it
The first of those is just a stylistic pose and doesn't much matter, cuz many of us totally enjoy Morbs being a cranky crank and often find it endearing -- the second part is a big problem for me, cuz who wants to be baited by a dude for not agreeing with opinions even that dude himself apparently doesn't take seriously enough to discuss seriously?

He absolutely has a point! I guess some people just don't like it when somebody says "really, fuck you assholes" without really engaging on the question of why they're the assholes. He lives in NYC -- as far as I'm concerned, he's surrounded by millions of people who exist solely to be screamed at by some old dude with no impulse control.

leaving aside the question of "breaking campaign promises" (zzzzzzz....), the only actually interesting question about iraq is whether obama is approaching it intelligently or not, whether he should be doing things he isn't or shouldn't be doing things he is. and tbh i just don't know yet. the 16-month timeframe he promised was as arbitrary as anything else, and the fact that obviously we'll still have thousands and thousands of troops there after 16 months in itself doesn't tell me whether that's a good or bad thing. i'm not going to ask morbz what he would do in obama's place because that's an absurd question, but i will say that i certainly don't know what i'd do. i mean even if you don't assume obama has an imperial mindset and blah blah blah -- even if you were willing to grant him the benefit of several doubts that his biggest concern is minimizing the carnage going forward (and actually i do think that's at least ONE of his concerns) -- it's not obvious that withdrawing troops either faster or slower is the best way to do that. people are still getting blown up in iraq, and people will continue to get blown up in iraq for some time to come, probably no matter what we do. otoh, what we do might possibly affect the rate and level of people being blown up in iraq, which is why it's worth trying hard to avoid assorted worst-case scenarios.
but that's all very complicated and actually nobody KNOWS the best things to do or rate to do them at. so it's easier to just sneer at people who voted for obama over john mccain.

well, this is the flaw in the sb system that always gets tuomas so riled up - the system relies on the integrity of its users, and that can't be controlled here. however, I kind of like that the community end up getting what it, as a body, wants: I feel Morbius was a valuable member (and will be again, I assume), whether irritating or no; a community made up solely of people who're totally cool with other sounds way boring imo
however, on the other hand, the whole discussion is very boring, so I am sb'ing myself for participating in it

^This is funny and true, but i don't even think 'troll' describes Morbius. He just used ILX to vent sometimes - sometimes resulting in good threads. But I think it's a big mistake to put a system in place that bans people for any other reason than harassment, or purposely ruining other people's threads by derailing it into off-topic meta garbage (I realize I am basically doing this right now, but this thread is dead without Morbs anyway). The SB system is basically a popularity filter.
Anyone who came into this thread, knowing who started it, and hit SB for anything he said in here, just sucks IRL imo.

I promise I won't say anything more on the matter. I'm mostly a lurker and don't want to get all metal about ILX, but I think this sucks, and I hope he does come back if the thing is lifted, which I'm sure it will be, because I always enjoyed his contrarian style - especially on the film threads.
