The team that confuses me right now is the Oilers. I have no idea what to think of a team w/ an aged Khabibulin and a potentially exiled Danny Heatley

I am happy to keep the Sedins, they took a discount and that's great news. sad to lose Ohlund but no surprise there, really. Was not prepared to lose laBarbera, but i guess if the guy wants to play, he's gotta go somewhere else.

am now concerned with Kyle Wellwood, and so, so, relieved that we did not jump on Gaborik.

The Rob Scuderi deal seems like a low priority move for the Kings because there is still NO ONE TO PUT PUCKS IN THE NET ON THIS TEAM.

is mikael samuelsson any good, detroit fans?

We are not a gossip site like Wikipedia (hmmmm), Friday, 3 July 2009 17:51 (fifteen years ago)

Samuelsson is a very solid third line winger that has been a VERY important playoff player for the wings. San jose should've had more patience with him, and a bunch of others over the years

Also kind of surprised I haven't seen this here: Hossa's deal (and Pronger's) is under investigation by the league.

torta suggestbana (dan m), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

funny that zetterberg's isn't as well

mookieproof, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

I think they mention Zetterberg and Franzen's contracts in there, and they figure that they're cool... I highly doubt that Hossa's will end up being flagged (but Pronger's is a bit more sketchy-- league minimum for 3 years or something?)

The controls are janky (Will M.), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 00:48 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah Hank's is definitely sketchy but no Wings fans will complain. Hell I don't even really care about Hossa or Pronger. I just hope this doesn't become a pattern... which is probably why they're looking at it :/

torta suggestbana (dan m), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

frankly it's the league's fault for allowing the loophole to exist

mookieproof, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 00:52 (fifteen years ago)

What's a better solution to the loophole then?

The controls are janky (Will M.), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

No salary cap so Mike Ilitch can flex some bank ;)

torta suggestbana (dan m), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

my understanding of the situation (which could be wrong, pls enlighten me):

say a club signs a 30-year-old player to a 12-year, $60M contract, but structures it such that the player is paid $9M for each of the first six years and $1M for each of the last six.

under the current system, the salary cap hit for each season is the yearly average over the life of the contract, i.e. $5M. but: the cap hit goes away if the player retires (which of course he would have every incentive to do after six years, having made his $54M and standing to make little more). so in effect, the team got a $9M/year player for six years but only took a $5M/year cap hit.

the league could close the loophole by not averaging cap hit over the life of the contract, or by some sort of cap penalty, or whatever. i think there's already some sort of special category to limit this sort of thing with players over 35, but it evidently needs to be extended.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

That's my understanding too. I think the cap penalty is the way to go, either that or playing with the way the averaging works out.

torta suggestbana (dan m), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

Or just get rid of contracts of 10 years or more, they're stupid anyway (remember Yashin and DiPietro in Long Island? I don't even think those were for loopholes but they still bothered me, mostly due to their stupidity)

The controls are janky (Will M.), Thursday, 6 August 2009 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

I have to poop, so I’ll make this quick.

1. ESPN.com is leading with a misleading and homoerotic headline: “DETROIT ROCK SOLID” on its front page. I guess the Tigs won something. Or have the opportunity to win something. Or something. No mention of opening day.

2. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/01/sports/baseball/01versus.html"">That may have something to do with Versus being dropped from DirecTV. Right. Thanks. Yeah. Whatever.

3. I love the distribution of potential breakout rookies and sophomores on unwatchable teams. Pekka Rinne for Nashville, Evander Kane for Atlanta, and “Fabalous” Fabian Brunnstrom for Dallas. I’d say these are three players “to watch,” if you could actually watch the NHL on television.

4. Interesting. I have no favorite to win the cup.

5. Interesting deux. Rumors abound that CBC will drop the NHL if San Jose (the “http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/01/2c/f0/a0/grathy.jpg"">Sharks”) or Anaheim (the “http://nugable.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/wosp2.jpg"">Ducks”) win the cup. But they’ll reconsider upon the establishment of the Hamilton Haida’s.

6. http://bitcast-a.v1.iad1.bitgravity.com/sportelligence/images/photos/photo_large/16/92316-3592.jpg"">I fear a post-Chicago win offseason thread.

7. NESCAC fans: the rumors are true! http://athletics.bowdoin.edu/sports/general/20090727"">Bowdoin's Watson Arena Garners LEED Certification!

8. So. I have accepted a season where Detroit is not a favorite. That’s okay. I’ll settle for a Norris and a Selke.

9. I thought it would be nice if we all pitched in and bought a plaque to award Hossa upon his first post-season goal for Detroit, http://img.bleskovky.sk/big/101843.jpg/chara-svadba-jul07-gaborik-s-frajerkou-marian-hossa.jpg"">but …

10. This thread should be renamed: “62.8 over 12.”

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Hockey’s the best.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 1 October 2009 20:10 (fifteen years ago)

It's a solid pick, I ain't denying the Hawks. They've looked good in preseason and all the people I know who follow them here are feeling positive.

Detroit is lacking in goal, I think. I'm curious to see what kind of magic the guys who came up in the postseason last year can come up with now that they've had some time to be a part of the first team.

well i don't want to harp on ovechkin when i want to see physical play but i can't defend him here. he should stop doing this. it's too bad players have to put up with his reckless dirty hits without being able to do anything about it. if he doesn't respect the other players on the ice, and clearly he doesn't (just read that interview), he should at least fear them. get rid of the fucking instigator rule already. and why does laraque get 5 games and ovechkin get 2?

No, they didnt change that (the pad size) rule for Brodeur, they limited the size of the area behind the net in which the goalie could handle the puck. They used to have free reign (rein?). He was like a third defenseman until they changed that rule.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

they altered the jersey size because of p roy, they altered the pad size because of JS Giguere.

auger should be susupended imo, as bad as refs have it they should always take the high road

i am under no illusions that my opinions are even that interesting to me (dan m), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 21:56 (fifteen years ago)

as bob mckenzie said, obviously referees are biased somewhat -- e.g. sean avery gets called for shit that other players wouldn't -- and there has long been a settling of accounts between officials and players just like there is among players themselves. but don't tell the player you're gonna get him, and don't make it so blatantly and ridiculously obvious. at the very least they should suspend auger for being a dumbass.

someone pointed out that he's done a lot fewer playoff games than guys with less tenure, so it's not like even the league thinks he's a great ref . . .

mookieproof, Sunday, 31 January 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)

could have been worse. i think Pfaneuf is crazy overrated and nowhere NEAR the Scott Stevens 2.0 destroyer people think he is. Giguere is the big deal here as Toskala is horrible.

at the very least pfaneuf gets to play avery twice more this season

mookieproof, Monday, 1 February 2010 04:14 (fifteen years ago)

i think that calgary has been looking to dump phaneuf for a while now and very few teams would have spent (wasted) that much money on him. maybe edmonton or carolina, and, of course, toronto. as a canuck fan i'm glad the flames just got a little less physical. and um, i guess i don't know if these trades will have that much of an impact on these two struggling teams. will they?

13 wingers on the flames atm... so what's next?

the thrill of it all (omgomg), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 16:20 (fifteen years ago)

I imagine that I could well be the only Leafs fan left on this board (or who will admit it anyway), and for the whole season, I've been too depressed to post to this thread. But I like this trade. Phaneuf is overrated, but he's got the tools to be an All-Star (again) and an "elite" defenceman in the league. Having him on the point on the powerplay gives the Leafs a weapon they haven't had since McCabe left town.

The forwards they gave up in both trades were completely useless, with the exception of Hagman, who is a good player, but can't seem to find his game on a consistent basis. Chemistry is an admittedly elusive and poorly understood commodity, but Calgary is in real trouble if they think that Stajan is the centre they've been looking for to complement Iginla. He's a nice guy, but he's soft in every way. He should be the 3rd line centre on any decent team. The only player I will really miss is Ian White. He's been one of the few bright spots in what has become a nightmare of a season. That kid brings it every single night.

The best part of the whole thing is that Burke managed to get rid of both Toskala and Blake, and somehow got more than a bag of pucks for each of those two pylons. I can't think of a less effective forward than Jason Blake. He's fast, but he's got no grit, takes nothing but low-percentage shots, which usually hit the goalie square in the chest, and he couldn't find the front of the net with a map. As for Toskala, I don't know if he's worse, or equally as bad as Raycroft, but after a couple seasons of watching him stand deep in his net and flail with his glove hand as yet another soft goal beat him on the first or second shot of the game, all I can say is good riddance.

This team is still light years away from being competitive, but they got rid of a fair bit of dead weight and picked up two players who have at least had some success in the past.

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

The Devils were a bit flat tonight, but the Leafs played well, and the new guys all looked pretty good. Based on how Calgary did last night, it would appear as though Toronto likely came out on top in the trades. Especially since Blake and Toskala are both beyond redemption.

Keeping the visor on is a bitch move. I hope it was an oversight.

was this a great move by the devils? or was it more of a sundin move to make it through the playoffs this year?

the thrill of it all (omgomg), Friday, 5 February 2010 06:28 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah this trade doesn't seem like a devils move, tbh

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 5 February 2010 08:29 (fifteen years ago)

1. 26-year-old kovalchuk is somewhat better than a 38-year-old sundin

2. devils have a solid team but needed offense if they're gonna compete with the caps (who have half again as many goals), pens etc.

3. god bless johnny oduya, but i'm not sure he's worth $3.5M a year. and the other guys are just prospects -- one of whom has hit the wall in his rookie season, one of whom has been suspended for the rest of his junior season, and one of whom is gonna be a late first-round pick

4. zajac and parise are young, but brodeur is 37, elias, langenbrunner and rolston are all in their mid-thirties, etc. if they're gonna go for it, now is the time. odds are it won't work, but i think it's totally worth the shot. (nb i am not a devils fan)

mookieproof, Friday, 5 February 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

man this new kid Peters playing in goal for Carolina vs. the Islanders is having one hell of a first ever NHL game. held the Isles scoreless through the first period, gave up a shorthanded in the 2nd but it seriously wasn't his fault - Carolina's power play is like worse than their full strength play (which is saying something). Anyway this kid is looking AMAZING.

I hear when you turn 50, which is probably the average age of the Wings, your appetite subsides. So that may be the explanation for the lack of hunger.

Growing up though (in the 80's) the old Hawks-Wings-Stars-Blues games were some of the biggest bloodbaths youve ever seen. Since that's what I grew up with, thats the kind of stuff I like to see.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

you are being ridiculous, bm -- especially coming from a devils fan.

does kronwall not hit? i don't like him, but holmstrom plays as physical game as anyone in the league. the red wings play great, entertaining hockey (or did, anyway). yeah, they don't fight much, but you don't get to the finals two years in a row with out being able to play physical hockey (as opposed to dumb hockey, like the flyers). god knows i'd rather watch the wings play 'visor hockey' than lou lamoriello's left-wing lock. besides, it's been a while since scott stevens retired, and i don't see travis zajac and zach parise littering the ice with bodies.

anyway. what was ericsson doing on that 2-on-1 last night for the wings? he wasn't in the shooting lane, he wasn't in the passing lane, he didn't even have his stick on the ice.

mookieproof, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

the bruins and flyers both play an unspectacular form of hockey and both teams seem to be in the 'just happy to be here' camp

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Thursday, 6 May 2010 00:06 (fifteen years ago)

Kronwall laid out a Shark player in open ice either this last game or game 2, can't recall. I don't know what Ericsson was doing on that play, I can only throw my hands up in disgust so many times. I really like Helm, and I think in another couple seasons Howard will be ready for big time, but not yet.

One thing I grinned at last night (before the Wings went to shit) was Lidstrom using the back boards to bounce a puck on net. Dude's old and crafty.

I can't stand him. It sickens me that a guy who spent most of his career head-hunting, deliberately attempting to injure other players, has been elevated to mythic status. He was a thug, and the 1995 Devils ruined hockey for years with the stupid trap.

King of Snake (j-rock), Thursday, 6 May 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

Total bullshit. He played the game how it was supposed to be played, and was the fucking heart and soul of a team that won 3 Cups (should have been 4) in seven years. I think the Red Wings have ruined hockey with their wimpass Euro style.

Calm down Bill. And yeah, watching the Devils of that era was incredibly boring. And Stevens was a thug who has no place in the Hall of Fame. While they did actually have a legitimate star defenceman back then, his name was Niedermayer, NOT Stevens. And I'm sure most hockey fans would love to hear how Stevie Y. spent 22 years playing the "Eurotrash" hockey style that Scotty Bowman is so known for. "I don't know what it is, but there's something about teams that didn't exist when I was a young hockey fan winning the Cup that is disturbing. Age, probably, but I felt that way even when like the Stars/Avs were winning shit."

The Stars have been in the league since '67, and the Avs since '79. Watching Colorado win those cups didn't bother me because they were a "new" team, but because the groundwork for those victories, the first one in particular, was laid while they were still in Quebec.

I'm looking forward to the Western final, and I hope the Hawks make it through. Pretty indifferent with regards to the East. I wish I were more excited about Montreal, but I'm not.

Transfer at Yonge for Union station (j-rock), Thursday, 13 May 2010 19:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I realize the Stars and Avs have previous history but they were still "new" as in rebranded for new markets, and I remember both moves being painful/controversial (esp. Minnesota) when they happened.

Watching Colorado win Cups bothered me because I HATED them, esp Lemieux of course.

he takes the account of everything in the universe into consideration (dan m), Thursday, 13 May 2010 20:23 (fifteen years ago)

I still use the alternate jerseys when I play the EA sports NHL games. I hope that Winnipeg gets their team back one day. But that might have to wait until Bettman's reign of terror comes to an end. And Lemieux was a bastard, unless he was on your team of course, but he always showed up for big games.

I always liked Claude Lemieux for some reason. Dude somehow managed to be one of the great playoff players of his era despite just being an ok regular season player. And a guy who makes so many hockey fans angry must be doing something right.

peter in montreal, Thursday, 13 May 2010 21:13 (fifteen years ago)

Please dont get me started on Claude Lemieux, the definition of a clutch player who could play for my team any day.

So you rooted for the Devils when they played the Avs in the Cup finals? I thought you hated the Devils.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 13 May 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

I hate them both, but honestly I hate the Avs more. Lemieux may be "clutch" but there are a lot of players out there who are clutch who were never as dirty as him.

The Hawks haven't looked as good as I thought they would, and the Flyers have looked better. 9 goals in less than 2 periods are a lot more than I expected though. Still, the good guys are winning at the moment. The Ottawa Senators aside, is there a more repugnant team in the league than the Flyers?

Transfer at Yonge for Union station (j-rock), Sunday, 30 May 2010 01:56 (fifteen years ago)

that's bill magill hockey right there -- 11 goals, no fights, no penalties on the flyers (?!) hope you enjoyed it, big guy

mookieproof, Sunday, 30 May 2010 03:23 (fifteen years ago)

lmao

dan m, Sunday, 30 May 2010 06:59 (fifteen years ago)

barnaby on sports center referred to d. briere as a 'young player' and I'm pretty sure that little cocksucker has been in the league since winnipeg moved to phoenix. AT LEAST. also fuck the media for going into philly goalie drama discussions already. I want chicago to win but give me a break...

Oh, trust me, I've enjoyed these last two games very much!!!!!!

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 1 June 2010 13:39 (fifteen years ago)

Hossa is one game away from ending his streak.

Bill Magill, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

Commentators said he disappeared off the Hawks bench, possibly hurt? I don't know if that was ever resolved.

Dirty fuckin' game last night.

dan m, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

he played after that. almost scored, if i remember correctly.

that was the first enjoyable game of the series. The rest were too nervewracking. Didnt look too dirty to me.

Bill Magill, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

such sloppy defense -- gary bettman must be touching himself

mookieproof, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, sticks were getting up high, lots of late hits and raised elbows on both sides. Still, playoff hockey etc etc.

I was watching with my not-really-hockey-fan roomie, and we were both mystified why Philly pulled Boucher w/ more than 2 minutes to go.

dan m, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:41 (fourteen years ago)

cause they were down two goals?

there did seem to be a lot of sticks up, though i don't know about on purpose. weird that neither the high sticking of briere nor campbell was even called. the only *really* gratuitous cheap shot i remember was hartnell's elbowing penalty.

mookieproof, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

It just seemed a little early to be pulling him is all. Yeah, they really had nothing to lose, but (for me) it just seemed a bit early.

dan m, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

way to say the same thing twice there, me

dan m, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:54 (fourteen years ago)

I've also noticed in the last couple of years that teams have been pulling goaling earlier and earlier. I'd love to see some stats on how effective it is to pull a goalie so early.

peter in montreal, Monday, 7 June 2010 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

pulling goalies I mean

peter in montreal, Monday, 7 June 2010 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

we were both mystified why Philly pulled Boucher w/ more than 2 minutes to go

^two goals down, you gotta do it.

Bill Magill, Monday, 7 June 2010 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

I'd love to see some stats on how effective it is to pull a goalie so early
i heard a stat a few years ago - i think it was between 10 and 20% success of scoring after pulling the netminder. i've never seem a team score two like that with the game winding down, but i bet it's happened

If you can believe your eyes and ears (outdoor_miner), Monday, 7 June 2010 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

I remember years ago Mike Keenan (I think) pulling the goalie with like seven minutes remaining. (Regular season game, not playoffs.)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 7 June 2010 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

Keenan is a rare genius

dan m, Monday, 7 June 2010 18:31 (fourteen years ago)

"I'd love to see some stats on how effective it is to pull a goalie so early"

I can tell you that if the Flyers did not pull their goalie last night being two goals down with two to play that their chances of winning would have been 0%.

Bill Magill, Monday, 7 June 2010 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

I see the Jim Joyce incident opening a can of "...well they're only human" when it comes to officials. That call on Hossa was inexcusable.
