So, sarahel, how are you? You have totally groovy contributions and ways. I, a rube, know nothing about you. ie are you a lady or a gentleman? Are you a mod or a rocker? Do you like seafood, or does it remind you of baby mice? Would you rather watch T2 or Total Recall? These are the things I wonder about you, sarahel.
― kind-hearted, sensitive keytar player (Abbott), Tuesday, 7 July 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago)
kinda going through a midlife crisis right now. That life's calling thread is really apropos right now. I've basically been doing a particular thing for almost 10 years, and for most of that time I felt like it was improving/progressing, and now I feel like it's not, and I feel like throwing in the towel.
I'm female ... almost 35.
I love seafood, though I'm curious about anti-coagulating baby mice. I don't want to eat them, though.
T2 > Total Recall.

ilx since Januarywest coast (6th generation Californian) except for a 4 year tour of duty on the east coast for college in Providence. I left Providence before the Olneyville/noise scene got going. xp elmo - the first one. I was the first person in my California-bred family to go to college outside of California. My grandmother thought it was frivolous, because there are plenty of good schools in California. She later changed her mind once she realized that it would give her another excuse to travel.
xp abbott - the budget thing - this shit keeps happening. It happened 10 years ago. I don't know when/why the state got so dysfunctional. I was less surprised by Prop 8 passing than my friends that had moved to CA from other places.

There was also a dude named D4n J0hns0n who was in my high school class who went there on a running scholarship to study engineering (he was '95) and a pre-med cellist named L1s4 M1lls ('97). (There are others I was introduced but I'm blanking on names now; one I think was named B3tsy Hurd and I think she was '96...? And maybe Sc0tt R0l4nd '97? hi sarahel! basically nothing but <3 for your tude and i am sorry if i caused any consternation, it was a silly and jarring way to put it but basically yeah i saw a few of my own overposting habits in some of your posting lately and thought i could possibly lend a word of advice...it was above and beyond my station as i now see...and i can only declare that i wouldn't do it to/for someone i disliked. specific examples? well...it's not so much individual posts as density (and yeah, i'm guilty of this too quite a lot)...i think on the WDYLL thread you threw a coupla jpgs in that were a bit off-topic and there was another one this morning where you were trying to find innuendo in everything (possibly the ppl you've had sex with thread yeah)...these aren't annoying per se (and sometimes hit the mark big-time) but there have been a few examples where you've shoehorned things in where they er don't need to be...i mean actively responding is a good thing but some things are maybe best left unsaid...no probs with your posts on an individual basis mind, and i still stick by my words of fandom above! now before i dig myself any deeper, i offer a conciliatory handshake and a tip of the hat. never will i 'call someone out' on barely-significant grounds like this again!

I think part of his appeal to me was that he was more fucked up than I was, and I wanted to "help." The first time I cried in front of him, he told me, "I liked you better when you didn't have feelings." I should have ended things right there, but I was romantic and 20 years old.

I mean, if your crying girlfriend doesn't soften you up just a bit, you may be hopeless.
At the time, I liked me more when I didn't have feelings. Also, girls crying was kinda a weird turn-on for him.

The crying wasn't related to the relationship. Someone had written something mean about me in a campus publication. At the time, I wrote for another campus publication that regularly made fun of other students. So, I felt like I couldn't actually complain about the treatment. It still made me upset, though.

― Black bread and Victory gin AGAIN? (kenan), Saturday, 8 August 2009 00:12 (fifteen years ago)
there are people that cry as a means of manipulation, but most of the time, they're genuinely upset.
― free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Saturday, 8 August 2009 00:14 (fifteen years ago)
I dunno, when it comes to relationship i've been with guys that were all about talking about their feelings, which generally gets me v. eyeroll unless you have some real current issues anyway, but never really gave any evidence of having feelings in any other way, and despite their words were really calculating, and I always feel like I'm the opposite, i'm sincere about stuff I just don't want to have to talk about it, you know, ever.

― Black bread and Victory gin AGAIN? (kenan), Saturday, 8 August 2009 00:19 (fifteen years ago)
I think the thing for him, was that the crying was simultaneously affecting and he was also suspicious of it. He was definitely a product of boarding schools -- where it seems like kids perfect bullying, manipulation, and fucked up behavior towards one another a lot more than at schools where they go home to their families every day.
― free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Saturday, 8 August 2009 00:22 (fifteen years ago)
xp Surely I still conceal more feelings than I reveal. But there are practical reasons for that. I'm given to having intense feelings about anything and everything, and that's no way to go through your day.

― free jazz and mumia (sarahel), Saturday, 8 August 2009 00:56 (fifteen years ago)
okay, here's a question:
not wanting to get into too much detail, but -
I was recently contacted by a reporter for the local paper who wants to write an article about a business I and my partner operate. The main focus of the article is one aspect of our business, that my partner manages. Motivated partly by jealousy, as well as a desire for the article to present a better picture, I mentioned another aspect of the business - the part I manage. The reporter was not aware of this aspect of our business. This aspect is not properly licensed, and we received attention from the City government about it, and we are officially "not doing that anymore." There has been a bit of criticism from the arts community of the City government for cracking down on these activities. The paper that this reporter writes for is one that City government officials actually read, as opposed to alternative weeklies, which list these activities in their paper.
I'm trying to figure out the best way of handling this. Do I play it safe? Do I tell the truth and try and make it a political issue?

― jaymc, Thursday, 13 August 2009 23:00 (fifteen years ago)
I guess I would ask, though, what sort of ramifications would there be if the city found out? Could the city shut down the whole business? Force you to pay a fine? Or would you be able to say "sorry, won't happen again" and then carry on as usual?
― jaymc, Thursday, 13 August 2009 23:03 (fifteen years ago)
(The business sounds rad, btw.)

― cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 13 August 2009 23:08 (fifteen years ago)
it's one of those things ... I've gotten plenty of advice about the whole thing ... which goes back about a year and half. Lots of people saying to make a political issue out of it, garner a lot of community support and effect change, etc. Lots of "We're with you all the way." But, these people aren't me.
in answer to your questions: I don't know what they would do. They could declare it a public nuisance and shut it down. The potential fines, if they choose to go that route, are probably less severe than were we to have continued the other unlicensed practice that is obviously illegal, though the City of San Francisco tends to turn a blind eye to it when engaged in by non-profits like ours. However, the City of Oakland does not.
We made a serious attempt to try and get licensed, and it just wasn't feasible. The process involved a series of judgment calls on the City's part, none of which went in our favor.

instead of surveying people, I compiled results of other surveys to come up with a list of 100 movies, and then my bf patiently helped me fill out surveys of attributes of these movies ... hundreds of hours ... we didn't end up watching all 100 ... I think we did 91 of them. Most of the ones we didn't do were Disney movies.

Well, yeah. You've gotta be pretty general when asking people what they want. Even to the point of 'on a scale of 1-10, how optimistic is the movie?'
― You are Rebels! You are all yankees (country matters), Tuesday, 18 August 2009 02:35 (fifteen years ago)
also key is to have the answers be easily quantifiable ... like how would you translate a "7" on the optimism scale into a new movie, vs. do characters go shopping and what do they buy?

I could see someone interpreting the "new curriculum" as douchey and its implication that "Our students are too good for general ed requirements." Honestly, that's half the reason I went there. Probably the douchiest class I took was statistics for social science majors where most of the class were preppy business majors, only the major was called something else.

Yale's pretty easy to hate on, too, which is why I think it's telling it's not on the list. Posh Ivy League school in the middle of a slum, and all that. George W Bush went there, ffs. I went to a party at Yale once, and it was douche central, it was called "The Pump and Slipper Ball"

sarahel: recommend a restaurant in oakland/berkeley for us to try out tonight, one that has decent vegan options (please)
― where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Sunday, 6 September 2009 00:01 (fifteen years ago)
current options, by order of preference for tonight:1. golden lotus (solely vegan vietnamese)2. flavors of india (great indian but been going there a lot)3. herbivore (would have to go to the one in berkeley, which is shit compared to the sf one)4. pasta pomodoro on college in rockridge (but jordan eats pasta every day for lunch, so he'd rather not)

now we're thinking of maybe going to souley vegan. sarahel have you been there?
― where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Sunday, 6 September 2009 00:35 (fifteen years ago)
I haven't ... I have eaten at:
Golden Lotus - pretty tasty, even to someone who eats meat and fish
Herbivore - yeah, some of their stuff in Berkeley location is good, but definitely not all ... I think I had some soup there (might have been lentil or split pea) that was great, and the polenta w/mushroom gravy is fine, though I end up adding plenty of salt to it. The cocktails are pretty great, though.
Neither me or the bf are vegan (he's vegetarian, I was vegetarian briefly, then spent about 8 years as vegetarian + fish, and am now back to eating meat), so I'm not super knowledgeable about vegan restaurants. I do have several friends who are vegan, and off the top of my head - places the vegan friends like to eat besides those mentioned above:
Manzanita Restaurant (i think it's also macrobiotic or something) - on the Oakland/emeryville borderLanesplitter's on telegraph will make vegan pizzaRudy's Can't Fail Café has a good number of vegan optionsFellini's in Berkeley will make things vegan for you if you ask (fairly pricey - we'll go there for special occasions like birthdays and such or the periodic "romantic dinner")
Have you considered Ethiopian food as an option? I think the vegetable dishes are vegan. There are plenty of yummy Ethiopian places in Oakland.

yeah we read about that macrobiotic place, it seemed a bit much. the vegan soul food place was... interesting. ytth loved it but i thought it was meh. but then i've never had real soul food either. he digs ethiopian but i feel like it's probably too spicy for me. also i am the world's worst/fussiest eater :/
― where we turn sweet dreams into remarkable realities (just1n3), Monday, 7 September 2009 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

vegan ethiopian food is really good... a place in LA made vegan dishes, and it was w/oil instead of butter. i think that justine would have a problem with the bread more than anything else, since it's so yeasty and sour tasting. pungent, almost.

the only video games i play are bejeweled blitz and scrabble variants, sometimes i will play pacman or ms. pacman if they have it at a bar and the drinks aren't so overpriced that i am reticent to spend more money at said establishment
i stopped watching von trier films after Anti-Christ

are there places in sf that have reasonably priced drinks? or: what is a reasonable price for a drink in sf?
if i move to the bay area you can borrow my ps3 if you want
― Lamp, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:18 (eleven years ago)
well drinks should be no more than $5 -- unless it's someplace like the Eagle which has the stiffest drinks I've had in SF - then it's ok if they are $6
― not some dude poking a Line 6 pedal with his dick (sarahell), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:19 (eleven years ago)

― not some dude poking a Line 6 pedal with his dick (sarahell), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:21 (eleven years ago)
i have an impt job interview there in two weeks
$6 is pretty good for a double anywhere i've ever been $5 mixed drinks is p cheap i think idk. i wish jaxon still posted to ilx

― ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:40 (eleven years ago)
I dunno you could definitely find bars with $10-$15 drinks around here without looking too hard. but yr average neighborhood/decent bar is closer to sarahel's math.
― what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:43 (eleven years ago)
says the guy who hasn't been inside a bar in at least a year
i feel like the average price of drinks where i live now (toronto) is p close to $7 for a mixed drink. when i lived in ny the average was maaaybe closer to $6 but i didnt go out as much and i didnt go to as many 'nice' places as i do here. i feel like the data i have for sf is hopelessly out of date, and i do not trust the anecdotal information i get from fb
haha this is important job info for my bf tbrr
i will probably be sad/lonely for the first few months if i move and will def want to go out w/ilx people if theyre willing
― Lamp, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:47 (eleven years ago)
There are plenty of places here to get a mixed drink for $5 or less.
― Ma mère est habile Mais ma bile est amère (Michael White), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:49 (eleven years ago)
i don't know if you can get a mixed drink in manhattan for five dollars
― One burly voice screamed and that was one of many. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 03:08 (eleven years ago)
i am not as fugazi about the $5 rule as i used to be, now that i have mellowed with age, have more financial stability, and participated in enlightening discussions here on ilx. $6 for a well drink is something i can accept tbh.
i would totally drink w/u lamp -- even at a place with fancy drinks where they mush up food-like ingredients and put them in yr drink
― not some dude poking a Line 6 pedal with his dick (sarahell), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 05:26 (eleven years ago)
Mixologists would call that muddling. Muddling costs about $3.00 to $5.00 dollars ime
― Ma mère est habile Mais ma bile est amère (Michael White), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 13:58 (eleven years ago)
I am way into this muddled drink I had at the Slow Club and have been making it at home - I'm not sure what it's called (a whiskey smash maybe?). Ingredients are bourbon, soda water, maple syrup, a slice of lemon and crushed mint leaves. it is awesome.
