drank from 12, smoked weed from 13 until 16 or so when i realised i didn't like it, skipped class for weeks at a time. What a rebel.

My high school drinking was very, very limited due to going to a party relatively early on where people got trashed and did things like jumping into bonfires. Being inebriated and not entirely in control of what was happening to me around these people struck me as a wholly bad idea.

I did get trashed on my 18th birthday, though.

My first high school bender at seventeen was on this stuff:

http://pics.livejournal.com/adins/pic/00001fwx/s320x240

After a suitable layoff period, I drank at every high school party until graduation: strictly beer, though. I've since lost the enzyme in my salivary gland that allowed me to drink Miller High Life, Icehosue, and Busch (in cans) with pleasure.

But put them together and that's a fine mixed drink.

No. Alcohol brought out the total asshole in my dad and younger brother, so I avoided it.

I was in the dork/smart crowd at an all-girls Catholic high school so for the most part, no. The summer between high school and college when I was 17 was a different story. That's when I had my first serious boyfriend, drank, smoked and had sex all for the first time. Not in excess though - I was still really innocent and v naive.

I lived in India for my freshman and sophomore years, where there was very easy access to alcohol and drugs, but I was pretty nervous about both so didn't use them often. Got drunk a few times, tried to get high a few times (mostly unsuccessfully), had a bad experience, haven't done any illegal drugs since then.

smoked weed at age 17, before i ever got drunk -- a long time considering my i lived with my hippie-turned-yuppie dad who smoked regularly. drank a few times in HS but not frequently or excessively until sophomore year of lol college.

hobbes (brownie), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:51 (sixteen years ago)

Nope. Hung out mostly with the smart kids/theater kids, so it just never really came into play.

In fact, threw a holiday party in 12th grade and wrote on the invitation, "Time: 7 PM until we all get sloshed and have to call for rides." I was surprised when my parents made my change it because in my mind it couldn't possibly be anything other than a joke.

So it was kind of a shock when I got to college and saw my jock roommates getting wasted pretty much every night, which then had the effect of actually turning me against drinking for a couple years. The first time I got drunk was in Scotland, while on study abroad, right before I turned 20.

yeah i did plenty, but oddly kept it kind of separated off from my day to day HS experience. one of my closest friends expressed total amazement at the stuff i was up to when we talked about it in college. two very different social groups that didn't intermingle much. oh and guess what, the people i still know are like 99% from the sober HS side. go figure.

Because I didn't drink at all my first two years of college, I never had the shitty beer phase that so many people go through -- don't think I've ever tasted Coors or Busch or Icehouse or Natty Light. When I got drunk for the first time, it was off red wine and Guinness. Although it's not like my palate was super-refined, either: the first beer I ordered in a bar after turning 21 was (lol) Sam Adams Cherry Wheat.

I didn't drink a drop in high school (or do any drugs) because:

a) was one of the smart kids, sarcasm was our poison of choice
b) hate hate hate beer to this day - I only drink wine/spirits
c) because the people who did that stuff, at that age, in that place were gross and brain-dead
d) imported 12-inch singles were $4 or $5 a pop and I made one of those 'difficult financial decisions' to get those instead.

Two Will Get You Three (B.L.A.M.), Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

Yep. Started experimenting with stuff around 12. Didn't really have any friends in school, though, so it was pretty compartmentalised into drinking/smoking outside of that, going to pubs and gigs when I realised I could get into them, and studying pretty hard when I was in school. I never went for the traditional teenage drinking of shitty cider in parks or anything (partially because I didn't have any friends to hang out with, but also because I always found that idea horrible), so I just drank in the same way I do now. Except not as much.

Yeah the college I went to my first two years was filled with a lot of very wealthy boarding school kids who had been drinking and doing tons of drugs throughout high school. The very first night of orientation I wound up at a party where there was more booze and drugs than I'd ever seen. I was pretty much like this the whole night O_O but to the ppl I was with it was nbd.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Thursday, 9 July 2009 16:30 (sixteen years ago)

I might add that in HS, everyone knew what my uncle did for a living (COP! Head of Mpls Vice!) so I was about the last person my classmates would involve in drug nonsense (I've since heard a lot more about what people on the other side of town did when their parents were busy having key parties or otherwise ignoring them during divorces). My college also featured a huge number of boarding school kids but in practical terms, I attributed their love of weed and trips to be more Dead-related than a side-effect of boarding. I didn't partake at all until my last year of college, because I went to NY as a fresher right after the Central Park preppy murder and the carding was really very rigorous as a result.

LOL honors student paranoia indeed: every single thing I did between the ages of 14-18 was about getting the fuck out of MInnesota or having money to buy records and vintage clothes.

Erica, yes, that's where I went. What happened in the dorms? If you went during Bacchanalia, $10 bought a little care package of weed and mushrooms. When I was there, decadent rich kids had antique drinks cabinets in their rooms and suchlike, while all the hard drugs were done by music people the second they moved off campus. The most intense thing I ever witnessed was a Thanksgiving dinner that began with a benediction of sorts from the Church of Sub-Genius book and ended with an orgy.

going vogue (suzy), Thursday, 9 July 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

i smoked weed almost every weekend freshman and sophomore year then fell out with those friends and started turning to alcohol for debauchery - but far less frequently - and didn't really pick weed up until senior year where i started smoking every weekend again and like... going to wendys all the time. it was cool tho cuz my friends at this point had never really done shit like that in hs so it made me feel "young again"

the first time i ever drank was the new years eve when i was 15, but whenever i drank in hs it was always hard liquor and everyone drank too much and got sick. i can't drink or even really smell vodka to this day because of high school.

weed was just easier to get... i knew like two or three kids who served and like maybe one with a fake ID and even then no one wanted to risk getting their ID taken on your account of course

Also, HHS people could be really dangerous/stupid.

This can't be stressed enough. I can think of 7-8 kids out of our 900+ person high school off the top of my head who were killed in stupid alcohol-related incidents, the most spectacular one being an ill-fated Russian Roulette game in the middle of a barn party. (Several more were maimed for life in alcohol-related incidents, including a dude who passed out on some train tracks and had his legs cut off when we were in junior high.)

For this, I was nearly deemed incorrigible (if we were really fighting, whenever my mom whipped out a biglongword, I would shush the room and say we need to congratulate Claudia on her big vocab moment here).

I was in high school from 1968-1972. I was a relatively straight arrow. When I was at a party where alcohol was available, I would drink some, but not much. I also smoked a bit of pot, but back then it wasn't very potent stuff and I kept my consumption low.

I didn't go overboard until I got to college.

Aimless, Thursday, 9 July 2009 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

My stats:

Cigarettes: tried them for the first time when i was 11, didn't pick 'em up again until i was 17. still smoke, unfortunately. worst decision evah.

Weed: 13 for the first time, occasionally for the next couple of years, real hardcore at 17, never stopped since because i love getting high.

Booze: drunk at party around 16, then got drunk once a week until college, drank every night for first six months of lolcollege, stopped for 6 months, started drinking every night again, though only two or three nights a week to get drunk. i enjoy beer of all kinds, tho my poor grad student ass hardly ever drinks anything except cheap stuff nowadays...

mushr00ms: first time at 17, a couple more times til college, twice in college, once since then. never want to touch the things ever again.

aciiiieeed: more than 20 times. don't ask how my brain still functions.

c0ca!ne: first time at 17, a bit here and there til i was 21, then it got serious for a bit, then slowed for a year, then got heavy for a year. now i only will do it for free.

SEX: first time with a guy, 16. first time with a girl, 17. did the whole bi/fluid thing for a while, then didn't have sex with anyone for a year, then basically became who i am now: a 90% fag.

I didn't drink a LOT in High School, but I certainly did whenever the opportunity arose. I went to a strict private Christian school, so this was just as much about "sticking it to the man" as it was about having a good time. The clean smart kids/dumb partying kids thing (is this a real thing or something invented to make people feel better about a boring High School social life?) that seems to be commonly spoken of here wasn't really the breakdown in my High School. It was more clean Jesus kids/everyone else. And of course smart/dumb didn't break down along those lines.

xp - ha, my unofficial faculty mentor in HS suggested I go to Sarah Lawrence! ...but my mom refused to let me go to college in NYC because she thought it was too scary.

Like Suzy, most of my time in high school was spent working towards getting out of the place where I grew up. My parents had invested at one point in a semi-stocked liquor cabinet, probably when I was relatively young and they had recently moved to the dumb town I grew up. They undoubtedly had plans to use the booze for "proper" entertaining, but most of the friends they ended up making in said dumb town were more beer and wine people. Thus, when I hit 15, I would methodically go through the bottles one by one - mixing whatever it was with some fruit juice in a thermos - climb out my bedroom window, go to a park or vacant lot, drink and write bad goth poetry and prose. Not every night - just once a week or every two weeks.

Oh yeah, cigarettes! I was a social smoker from the summer after freshman year in college until... 2 years maybe? after I graduated (and I do mean "social smoker"; I would take a week and a half to go through a pack of cigarettes unless I was at a party, which is probably why it was so easy for me to stop).

he clean smart kids/dumb partying kids thing (is this a real thing or something invented to make people feel better about a boring High School social life?) that seems to be commonly spoken of here wasn't really the breakdown in my High School.

In fairness, this dichotomy was not really true in my high school, either; drinking was a unilateral activity across the board and the only reasons my drinking was sporadic were 1) seeing the dangerous depths some kids would sink to (cf "jumping into bonfires"); 2) total terror at the idea of being the only black kid at a booze party busted by the cops; and 3) severe lack of alcohol access mixed with having to drive 15-20 minutes to get home from anywhere fun I wanted to go except for John's house.

xp: John, do you remember when T1m M4y knocked her out of the bonfire and she screamed "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO THAT FOR???" at him? That basically made me decide to seriously curtail the number of drinking parties I was going to attend.

^^^40 oz of meatballs is one way of saying I Love You to your colon, John.

Dan, from everything you've told me about your folks they were more strict about cursing and backchat and made more of a united front than, say, a single mom who also cracks wise if there's an open goal. It makes a big difference.

Lamp, I didn't know you cared. Please stop.

My little sister (who sounds like she would compete well in the HHS stakes) provided gallons of drunkpuke to the Minnesota sewers as a teenager because she was very tall from about 13 and could get served or bought-for by her sketchy friends. We had to share a room from the day she came home from the hospital (me, at 3, a few days later: 'I'm bored, can we bring it back?') to the day I left for college and two more dissimilar people have never been asked to share space. If she came in late and disturbed me I rigged the stereo to play Handsome Devil by The Smiths at high volume, usually at 8am the following morning.

When I went to college she moved downstairs to the basement: room for her new waterbed, private entrance. She was 15.

God, everyone drank at my (British) school. I didn't for a while but about 14/15 started drinking round at friends' and stuff - discovering parents' home brew in a cupboard, all that. Actually my best mate's mum used to send us out on the streets with White Lightning or Bacardi, grim. Drinking started properly at 16 when I started college, going to pubs etc, can't believe I got served as I had a babyface but I don't remember them being as strict then - it's all "think 25" now. I guess this is pretty normal for a Britisher in a small town.

The law is worded so that the young drinker has to 'appear' to be of age; most 17-yr-olds even now are not having a problem.

When I was 25 I went to a pub with a writer I knew who was only 15, on a Thursday in Hampstead (in London, this is where a lot of people of school age try to get served, on Thurs because many are from Sabbath-observing Jewish families). They carded me but not her; I think it was to do with size of boobs (she had them, I still don't).

My grandfather owned a tavern. As a result we had an entire storage room in our basement full of booze. My mom threw wild parties in the fifties when her parents went out of town and we continued that family tradition. However, my brother and I tried to stay sober and keep everyone inside the house and if you were too drunk you had to spend the night. No regrets except the occasional hangover.

Alcohol is part of our family's history so all the kids in my family had their first bender at an early age as a rite of passage. I just got drunk one time to see what it was like, other than that I was never a heavy drinker, but beer or wine as a teen was tolerated by my parents. Problem is my mom drank socially when she was a teen, so she wasn't too preachy as long as we didn't get too drunk and absolutely did not get behind the wheel.

Discovered beer in freshman year.

kingfish, Friday, 10 July 2009 09:13 (sixteen years ago)

Started drinking aroud 14-15 but I'd been given wine by my grandfather since I was like 12 or something. All my friends in HS started drinking around the same age, we had those horrible parties every saturday evening where the only goal was to get as drunk as possible. Each of us would bring one or two bottles of liquor and after a while every time a glass was empty, we'd fill with three different things at the same time. Repeat until everyone is down on the floor. Good times ! Also, probably the only time I've ever drunk gin + tequila + whisky + martini + kahlua + whatever. Foul stuff.

Jibe, Friday, 10 July 2009 09:59 (sixteen years ago)

18, but if you are with your parents in a restaurant you can have wine if you are 16, I think.

Or beer or cider - but I think it's limited to one unit or something? The law is a mess as any licensee can add their own rules, hence places where you can't drink until you're 21 (or more I have heard). In your own home you can drink (with parental consent) from the age of 5 I think.

I probably drank from about 10. There was a lot of alcohol at our house and even more at my parents freinds houses. When I was in secondary school I drank fairly often from about 13/14. But never to excess, just a glass here and there. Didn't get drunk until I was 16. Never got high at school either. At least I don't remember.

There were a lot of non-drinkers or rarely-ever drinkers among my housemates in college. It was a good thing when it came to the sanctity of one's groceries or the general cleanliness of the communal bathrooms. However, it was often disastrous when they volunteered to buy booze for house parties. Most of the drinkers in the house were total brand snobs. One weekend another housemate and I, for the greater good, drank the bottle of Ten High Whiskey some non-drinker had bought, but no one else was desperate enough to consume.

I'm sure a good bunch of ILXors probably were poster children for sobriety as teenagers; in a school where you've been bullied it makes sense to keep your wits about you. In my case, I rejected song lyrics that went on about 'losing control' as pretty crap as a matter of course when I was 14. Somehow it was different when I discovered Joy Division.

Had I gone to a predominantly-black high school (or a high school where there were more than 5 black students in the entire student body), things might have been different.

Smoked cigarettes throughout high school, and smoked pot a few times at the end of senior year. Didn't drink until Freshman year of college, which was the sole year of my life when I got drunk on like jello shots and goldschlager and shit. Gave up weed by the end of the year, and I've only smoked it once since (which was a disaster). Sophomore year I actually lived in "substance free" housing, and so didn't drink or anything. Started smoking cigarettes the summer before 9th grade, because a girl I had a crush on did.

The next year, went to see Dazed and Confused with my girlfriend. Afterward, she said that the movie made her want to smoke pot. I was horrified. Started toking two weeks later.

Dropped my first hit of acid at a Steely Dan concert that summer, but it was of severely low potency.

Drank my first 8 beers that summer too: Icehouse provided by an extremely sketchy 30-something guy on the Ocean City boardwalk.

Didn't drink much throughout high school though, mostly because I felt it would be hard to hide alcohol breath from the parents (whereas I tripped my way through many a family dinner).

The second half of my high school career was consumed with the identification of nearby poseurs, as part of a zing crew. We made up a band called The Dilettantes to basically grab low-hanging fruit who would believe the band was real. We also did ironic screaming Beatles fan impressions at the record store if Tommy Stinson showed up to hang out. These were all the things we did instead of drugs.

I smoked weed before I ever got drunk, but only once or twice. Started drinking a little when I was a senior, when we'd drink glass quart bottles of Busch in the parking lot of a Christian men's organization on the edge of campus. We'd go to cheap movies at the university and raise hell and be dumbasses. I never really drank in college but I was a colossal stoner, and not in a good way. I drank way more after moving back to my hometown where my wife was in grad school, but never problematically, and I don't drink anywhere near as much now.

Small towns are so different. We had neither straight edge nor hippies nor hardcore nor shows.

We didn't when I was in HS, but soon after when I was in college in town there started to be both. My future brother-in-law was all vegan straightedge for a while with a bunch of his friends and played in lots of bands, but he isn't any more.

Also, my wife would also rep for the wasted honor students and band kids - not so much her but all her nerdy smart friends in their unbelievably tiny high school did tons of crazy drugs, way more than any of the "burnout" kids who just drank Mad Dog and shit.

My senior year of high school, most of our football got busted for dropping acid; IIRC they used to do it right before games. (I still can't believe they managed to win a game that season.)

my group of friends in HS was very high-achieving but also heavy-drinking and probably druggier than other social groups: we were the 'metal kids' i guess, so we'd been drinking at gigs since about age 14 (I can't remember being ID'd in any venue, which sort of... boggles the mind) and got into weed/skunk/etc a bit earlier than the 'popular kids', and thence various other drugs. I sort of suspect, looking back, that the school left us alone because we were good academically - we used to smoke up the hill from the school but somehow it was always a different group that got busted (mind you, they barely bothered going round the corner).

Didn't try alcohol until I turned 21. That night, someone shoved a beer in my hand. I took one sip and pawned it off on somebody else. Since then, I've tried other kinds of alcohol and been able to tolerate some of them, but at 28, I still don't understand the appeal. (Why order rum and Coke when regular Coke tastes better/is cheaper? My boyfriend, the sober alcoholic, finds this logic hilarious.) Probably not surprising that I have no drug experiences to speak of.

Being only 17, away from strict parents for the first time and thrust into a big time party environment was not really a good experience for me in retrospect.

It is just possible that my sister invented the term drink'n'dial in HS (first person I heard use it and I <3 neologisms) and anecdotes like the one above suggest how likely this prospect is.

Yesterday lurking on some Kos thread I saw a HSTNGS pile-up but it was a parallel world HSTNGS where they were sending in reinforcements to help a dude out who'd moved to MN to sink Michele Bachmann.

To go along with the acid football, the year before our women's volleyball time was heavy favorite to win the state tournament but all of the starters were elected to the (homecoming or snow court? now I can't remember what season this was) and got so ridiculously drunk and abusive that they ruined their limo and the the company reported them to the school, resulting in all but two of them getting suspended. The ones who got suspended then ganged up on the two who didn't and accused them of drinking as well, when the "drinking" they did was tasting someone's drink and going "ugh", so the school ended up suspending them as well as part of a stupid "zero tolerance"/"placating bad parents" policy.

The best quote was from the guy who got hit by the lynch mob, a regular churchgoer who said, "I am given more alcohol when I take Communion than I had that night."

All kidding aside, you cannot thrust a naive child into a world where booze, sex and drugs are INSTANTLY available at all times of the day, and not have properly prepared them for it. BLAM - Yeah, I mean I had gone to an all-girls Catholic HS for god's sake!! By the time I left for college I'd had my first serious boyfriend but still . . . I was not prepared AT ALL for the combination of 24/7 alcohol/drugs/boys etc. It was completely overwhelming and terrifying. I guess I could have dealt with it by staying in or abstaining etc. but I didn't. I mean it all turned out OK but I look back at some of the shit I did/situations I put myself in and it's pretty amazing that nothing really seriously bad ever happened to me especially since I was so naive and really trusting of people that I shouldn't have been.

Dan with that course of action in mind you were a lot smarter than I was at that point. Even if I had done that, by the time something bad had happened I would probably have been way too fucked up follow through with any sort of plan. I was pretty much drunk and/or high nearly every night my first two years in college. I have no idea how I managed to still get pretty good grades.

I actually think about this a lot. I wonder how I will deal with this with my own kids (assuming I have them someday) and try to prepare them for the "real world" while still maintaining parental boundaries and rules etc.

I did all my acid in grade 8 / That was the old days when acid had names / Flavors as it were / Windowpane, orange sunshine / But then things shifted / Acid stopped having names / And chips became flavored / That's progress? / I can remember a time when you could get orange sunshine, windowpane, or purple microdot / But the only chips you could get were plain / or in some stores / Rippled.

Cut to the chase / I did all my acid in grade 8 / I gobbled it right quick / I couldn't get enough of it / I did all my southern comfort in grade 9 / One bottle / Ooo, what a night / This is how Janis died? / What a sickly way to go / And kinda sweet, too, ya know?

Cut to the chase / I did all my acid in grade 8 / I did all my hash in grade 7 / Thought I was gonna say 10 didn't 'ya? Uh uh / The thing I hate about hash / Apart from the revolting taste / Was the way it made your eyes stare inside your tiny little body / Just sittin' there listenin' to Uriah Heep / A little of that goes a long way / Same as acid I guess you could say.

Cut to the chase / I did all my acid in grade 8 / It mighta got low for me / But I never did eat no vegetarian chili / It mighta got low for me / But I never did consume the Eastern philosophies / Which I used to think, you know, was Eastern Canada / Fisherman's philosophies / As in, "Ah, you'll see."

Cut to the chase / I loved all my love in High School / I gave all my love to those three separate, cruel, cool queens / Shelly Warwick / Susan Moriarty / Tammy Gorgenchuck / And now I walk around in a hashless, acidless, un-southern comfortable haze / And as I do / I think about my income tax / Hmmmm...

Being a substance enthusiast all through high school didn't inoculate me from this tendency in the least. I had a longer post written out but then I realized the my ultimate conclusion was that it is best to be neither a teetotaler nor a ridiculous drunkard, but to find what one might call a "middle road" or "golden mean," which, you know, duh.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Friday, 10 July 2009 18:52 (sixteen years ago)

not really, I started the year after

akm, Friday, 10 July 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

Jenny, I wouldn't even say it's a "tend to the mean" issue; it's more of a "think through the consequences and decide if you can live with them" thing. I have no doubt that, despite my relatively sheltered experiences, I could have thrown myself hardcore into full-on drug/sex bacchanalia; my social circle has always been like one degree of separation away from that. I just asked myself "If I do that and things go wrong, can I live with that?" Invariably, the answer was "uhhh... NO" so I just didn't go there; I knew what I was comfortable with and what I could recover from and (more importantly) the amount of trouble I was likely to get into for the various things I did and made sure I wasn't doing anything whose consequences were above and beyond what I was willing to take on. That may end up taking you to a "tending towards the mean" result but I feel the process is much different; had I ever been busted for underage drinking, I wouldn't have been too shattered by it because that was risk I was willing to take on. I absolutely was NOT willing to take on the risk of getting busted with or getting addicted to cocaine, so I never even tried to seek it out.

her performance (ie, her pubes) stood out for me (HI DERE), Friday, 10 July 2009 19:13 (sixteen years ago)

(I mean, the main reason I didn't drink that much in high school wasn't because I didn't WANT to; it was because the majority of the kids around me did incredibly horrifying, dangerous stuff when drunk and I didn't want to die! College was a totally different game, esp. since no one was driving anywhere.)

her performance (ie, her pubes) stood out for me (HI DERE), Friday, 10 July 2009 19:16 (sixteen years ago)

You know, I just never considered the consequences of getting busted, because I never thought I would (lol privilege) and then I never did (lol privilege). I didn't start contemplating the potential addiction consequences until people I knew actually started suffering said consequences, and by then being Crazy Party Girl was such an inherent part of my identity I didn't know how to be any other way.

she is writing about love (Jenny), Friday, 10 July 2009 19:26 (sixteen years ago)

she is writing about love (Jenny), Friday, 10 July 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah Jenny I agree entirely with what you said but I think that being so sheltered as a teen made it a harder and much longer process for me to find that middle ground if that makes any sense.

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Friday, 10 July 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

I had two older brothers who were busted by my parents with pot, which was pretty traumatic to 7-year-old me considering that up to that point we were like The Cosby Show on steroids. The entire bugbear of consequences was firmly stamped into my brain after that. (Also, I went through a really bad shoplifting phase around age 7 that culminated in me getting shamed to death by my mother and a shopkeeper in the local drugstore in front of all of the customers there, which now that I think about it probably did more to scare the idea of "CONSEQUENCES" into my head than anything else.)

so in high school my friends and i just associated drinking/drugs with the kids we liked the least--the cockiest well-off suburban jocks (this is a product of going to a suburban catholic school i supposed). it turned into this kind of anti-substance groupthink after a while. of course we all went off to college and started drinking separately. it was funny, i remember hanging out the summer after freshman year and slowly coming to that realization (i think we were all scared we were breaking some kind of unspoken pledge).

so as a result we all got our partying out a bit later in life (one or two of my friends are still getting their partying out i think).

i didn't get into regular drinking until junior year of college really and didn't get high until sometime sophomore year. found out that alcohol is def my intoxicant, contentedly never have wanted to try anything else.

Never drank/did drugs with high school folks until I was out of high school - I only really developed an active social life then. thirteen years pass...

i was just thinking about the fact that i had a routine i would do at lunch my senior year where someone would give me one of their grape juices (with the aluminum foil lid) if i pretended to chug it like alcohol. so i would stand up in the middle of the cafeteria while everyone chanted "chug, chug, chug" and pretend like i was sniffing it and making that 'wow this is strong face' maybe act a little hesitant and then down it, spill some down my face and stumble around like i was shitfaced. lots of laughs. mind you that all of the assistant principals and other authority figures are witnessing all of this and doing nothing but chuckling to themselves. then i would walk to the cafeteria bathroom right across from the principals office and smoke a cigarette. my parents actually moved to this suburban atlanta neighborhood for the schools

anyway, i still have a fucked up relationship with alcohol and cigarettes thanks high school
