England can suck my shit

Queen G of the Nil-All drawers, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Queen- you just want to spoil it for all of us england fans (Argentina today, the world cup is surel ours now!). if you don't like it then fuck off to ilm OK.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate the English. Thank god we're going further in the world cup than them. And I refuse to watch Brazil vs China on principle.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ha Dom if you don't like it in England PASTA OFF back to Italia if you fancy a PIZZA of the Azure Action !

DJ Martian, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brazil-China could be huge fun. Brazil should be miles better, and they seem in a flashy mood, so we might see some glorious moves and goals. Or another shock upset, which would be worth seeing too.

Martin Skidmore, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brazil are not at their bets this time. They struggled to beat TURKEY but they should still beta china.

Julio Desouza, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

China will not go gold until they shake a few of the bugs out.

Dan Perry, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Brazil'll do China 3-0 in one of those "so crap it's crap" matches. Now, Italy vs Croatia on the other hand...

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

do any of the Asian teams have much of a chance of getting much further, in yr considered opinions? I think it would be cool if Japan or Korea did well this year.

, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ready for the final match- poland vs costa rica? dj martian- I'll pasta in the pizza, would you fish and chips baked potatoes...;)

francesco, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DJ Martian- anyway, that's a hopelessly biggotted stereotype. I'd have hoped you've have grown out of it by now. So take your umbrella, bowler hat, and poor teeth, and go back to oppressing the Irish.

D'ya see what I did there?

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Quote from an Argentine on another forum:

What a jackass. A dive perfectly suited for a nancy-boy, fish-eating, vinegar-swilling, tipping-over-his-own-knickers, Mr.Spice-wanna-be- but- unfortunately-Scary-is-a-lesbian, soccer, yes, soccer, player. Jackass. I haven't seen a dive like that since the queen mother broke her collarbone. I take that back. Her 6-foot dive into the grave was pretty damn good.

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Italy - Croatia isn't going to be a great game. The Killer Whale Vieri will make sure of that. Probably another very comfy and effective 2-0 win with goals by Vieri and Emperor Totti. I'll pass on the Brazil games for now, I just can't stand the sight of Crybaby and Autism Boy.

Omar, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Italy/Croatia will be a great game as Italy will win it...

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DJ Martian the job's yours.

Gotcha part 2, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah obviously, but they'll only have to play 20 minutes of good footie for that result and the rest will be 70 minutes of Nesta & co killing off any chance of Croatia getting back into it. I still think Italy are underrated at the moment (which, let's face it, is the way they prefer it, isn't it?)

Omar, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Maldini's (very recent) ankle injury might complicate things though, Omar ...

http://www.SoccerAge.com/en/13/e8080.html

stripey, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah. No doubt they have some back-up?

This made me smile though:

Totti behind the offensive duo formed by Vieri and Inzaghi.

Of course I'll believe it when I see it. Needless to say Inzaghi should then be replaced by a real striker i.e. Montella. :)

Omar, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Italy have to win the World Cup, though. There's no way a player of Maldini's quality can end his career without winning the World Cup once (having said that, that's what we said about Baresi...)

Dom Passantino, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Two's up, Baresi! HA!

david h, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

When Italy bowes out I think I'll make a point of walking through little Italy watching them weep.

Mr Noodles, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It would be a bigger sin if Rivaldo had to end his career without a WC, ditto Ronaldo. He has been injured and has long term ligament prob. in his knees. He'll get better once his match rhythm returns. Of course he was still the MOM in brazil vs Turkey, and deservedly wears football's greatest ever shirt, Brazil #10.

The reason it's better for this living legend to win is he is 1 of the few who plays football the way it should be played, touches of magic, creativity & style. Like a great artist or musician, he is a unique voice who plays like no one has ever played before, the antidote in an era of lesser skilled robots and bores.

Maradona says, "For me Rivaldo is the only player in the world who is a pure joy to watch. He never ceases to amaze me."

Did you know Rivaldo was so malnurished as a child that all is teeth fell out, it is the reason for his extreme bow legs and why his muscular structure never developed fully? This kind of deprivation lowers life expectiency, organ developement, stamina and strengh. It's amazing he was able to become such an athelete in these circumstances and we can only imagine how much greater he'd have been if he could have eaten proporly in his youth.

As for the Turkey incident, this is not typical of Rivaldo but IMO he got a raw deal fr. media. He never tried to get anything to happen to the player that shouldn't have, the guy still deserved the second yellow for kicking the ball at him just to be a prick. The ref was not qualified and the match was v. dirty on turkey's part. I thought it was a good laugh at a pnt when the match was over, and nothing happened to the guy that shoildn't have, so they all the hate?

Fuck overly tactical Antifutbol Dahle Brazil!

Nicolette, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry for Spelling errors, I'm dead tired.

Nicolette, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh Yeah, did any of u notice that on his last minutes, crucial PK, he indicated to the keeper 3 or 4 times with his eyes and a nod, where he would hit the ball? And then he still beat the keeper. Too cool. With the unreal pressure on a brazilian player is placed on, no one would take such a risk just for fun.

4 yrs. Ago Rivaldo & RC cried while watching their friend Ronaldo have a seizure, swallow his tongue and come close to death before the final. Now I want them to get another chance to win the Penta! Viva Brasil!

Nicolette, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham Poll is the biggest fucking cunt in history. That is all.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lose Nesta and the fabled italian defensive wall starts cracking.....

stevo, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Poll can't be expected to call offsides - blame his assistant. Oh, and blame Italy for thinking 1-0 (yeah, it shoulda been 2-0) was enough. Plus they were hopeless in the first half.

Makes this group *very* exciting, don't you think?

Michael Jones, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Poll has the authority to overrule his linesman. Vieri's disallowed goal was a disgrace - can't be offside if you're behind the ball. That game was Italy's.

Venga, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Good old Croatia!!

jel --, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here is the copy today, Dom !

Italian player's I(CE) (S)CREAM at the assistant refs decisions - as their unbeaten record MELTS AWAY in the HEAT

DJ Martian, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's unreasonable to expect the ref (behind the play) to overrule the linesman (up with play) on a call which is so marginal. The linesman got it horribly wrong but Poll would have had to be superhuman to see that.

I thought the second disallowed goal was ruled out correctly, although you see those things allowed all the time.

I was quite pleased about the result but I do feel a bit sorry for Italy: it's awful losing a game to dodgy refereeing decisions.

Tim, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't see the game, but from reports I gather they woz robbed twice by some disastrous referee decisions (no suprise that the man in question was that blind tosser Poll.)

Omar, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If he's a tosser that may explain his blindness then

Billy Dods, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Given that I work with an exceedingly temperamental Croatian the result came as something of a relief. God bless shit refs.

Matt, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So Italy might actually have to pull their fucking fingers out then? Thank god for that. As ever, I am embarrassed to give my support to such an arrogant, negative bunch of prima donnas. I'm glad the better team won, and if Italy fuck it up against Mexico then they don't deserve anything beyond contempt.

My dad was cross also.

Mark C, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well said Cazza.

Hopkins is spot on re. the second decision: it was not a legit goal.

Sod the Italian team. They have always been bores. I think Croatia's result marvellous.

the pinefox, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, having now seen the highlights, I thought there was a foul on Inzaghi, the Croatian defender pulled him, realized he was gone and then pulled the oldest trick in the book: the dive. The resulting goal was so bizarre that the clueless linesman just had to flag for the implication of some sort of foul play.

Omar, Saturday, 8 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Japan are great, so far they have been the most entertaining and enthusiastic team, as you don't know if they'll win or lose. This is the opposite to say, Brazil who are stylish but quite arrogant with it. Inamoto is my player of the tournament thus far, it's just a shame he occasionally plays for Arsenal. Oh, and again, they have the best hair. Toda = hairstyle of the tournament.

Well done to them for making it finally feel like a World Cup!

jel --, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, quite great...but on the flipside, the Russians appear to be snatching the hooligan trophy of the tournament.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, I heard about that...big screens, early morning drinking, home side defeated = trouble in own country. This must be a first.

jel --, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

so far they have been the most entertaining and enthusiastic team, as you don't know if they'll win or lose.

I can't follow this logic. Anyway, how do you know whether all the other teams will win (OK Brazil v. China fair enough)?

N., Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know what I mean, it's hard to explain. It's to do with expectation and predicatability.

jel --, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Troussier: 'We are great' is my favourite World Cup headline so far.

N., Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ie Japan could play brilliantly and still lose (as they could have done today had Russia been able to finish)...the same could be said for other teams, but not to the same extent.

jel --, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha obviously everyone's bored of the World Cup now. Looks like Belgium have blown it now, anyway.

Jeff W, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not really Jeff - there's just more than one active thread now. Do we keep this one going until the end of the group phase - or start another from tomorrow morning?

Nice to see that the rain's eased up in Jeonju - has a WC game ever been abandoned due to the weather? A bit torn over this group - I don't really want to see Portugal, USA *or* South Korea being eliminated. I fear it'll be SK...

Michael Jones, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ok, so i read the thread to learn something about the footie and learned only that you are a big load of carping bitchy GURLS about it :) especially that Passantino geezer. i have watched a couple of games though, and it was OK. i liked it when David Beckham skilfully dodged 2 defenders to have a go at the goal. though i don't understand why everyone gets their knickers in a twist about Brazil. Brazil are a big load of sulky gurls.

katie, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Katie is OTM.

Portugal motoring nicely now (but against the most inept defensive performance outside of Saudi Arabia's first match), *and* my man Rui Costa notched a goal (but should've had a second). Strangely, I think Poland actually had more attempts at goal - they were nearly all rubbish, however.

I've been feeling very smug at being able to watch practically every game so far (and the prospect of uninterrupted knockout-stage enjoyment), but I'll be missing a few crunchy group games later this week. Portugal vs South Korea could be the game of the tournament.

Michael Jones, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Portugal have found their rhythm but Korea is playing at home. Its gonna be a great game now!

Hopefully France and Germany will get knocked out tonight. Does anyone know if Zidane is playing?

Julio Desouza, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How can you dislike both France & Germany? Liking one means disliking the other; disliking one means liking the other.

(I know Mike understands.)

the pinefox, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Poland haven't put in one decent cross all bloody tournament. An embarassment.

Where are all those people who said it was gonna to be Olisadabe's tournament now? Hmmm? Italy 1/2 to beat the Mexicans....

Dom Passantino, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael, I thought you were going to say you didn't want to see any of those three go through, which would pretty much match my sentiments. I would be in favour of South Korea if not for their tasteless goal celebration - why bring up the Tonya Harding affair this late in the day? It's just gratuitous muck-raking.

I have only seen two and a half matches :(

PJ Miller, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What was i supposed to learn?

Alan T, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed re. Harding. What nonsense. Embarrassing stuff.

the pinefox, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pinefox- it is incredibly simple. France have very good players and currently hold the title, and you never know with the germans, who have a good record. If they were both knocked out, England's chances would improve.

I like France but I want them out!

But yes, I don't like the Geramn team.

Julio Desouza, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

PF, PJ - it could've been worse. Beto mimed the Garfield Assassination after his goal for Portugal last Wednesday, and, behind him, Luis Figo was pretending to be the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Michael Jones, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think senegal have just about got the balance right - a quick Loya Jirga after the goal and then back to the task in hand. Looks like a real thriller in, erm, Incheon. Senegal incheon through to the last sixteen. Au revoir les bleus.

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RIP France

Jeff W, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

France: very sad, but China and Saudi Arabia have looked more likely to score in this tournament. I can't think of a similarly catastrophic failure to perform from such a fancied team before.

Senegal - marvellous to see them through, but by jove they were lucky. Terrible penalty decision in the first half, Uruguay came storming back (anyone here have ITV2?), Morales nodded the simplest of headed chances wide right at the death.

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Saw Senegal-Uruguay on RTBF2 here. Very exciting game.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually feel sorry for France. It's good that from now on the reigning champions will have to qualify for the World Cup like everyone else.

jel --, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aye - last time France played a WC qualifier: Nov '93 (under Houllier) and that shocking defeat vs Israel?

Michael Jones, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

still not learrning anything...

Alan T, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alan did you know: Dugarry Scott was originally scheduled to play Wolverine in the X-Men movie?

jel --, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

heh France. je rire sans cesse avec Dr Vick! oh and Alang: an interesting FAKT is that "balti" means "bucket"! so now you know.

katie, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jel, i did know that. i think we must have both seen the same film 2002. ktee, are you sure that's a sensible translation -- isn't it the name of the pan it's cooked/served in?

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

foiled again!

jel --, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nope it really is bucket. The pan it is surved in looks like a bucket in traditional (hah!) Balti joints. Like bucket chemistry but with curry.

Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy starred in 14 films together.

Pete, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well balti definitely means bucket in Hindi. i think it's a bit of an urban miff surrounding the old Baltis which as any fule kno were invented in, uh, Bradford i think. or maybe Birmingham. if you were being poetic you could say you cooked it in a bucket!

katie, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

However as far as the French translation goes surely it would be 'je ris' not 'je rire', n'est-ce pas?

Mmmmmm buckets of curry. Num num.

Emma, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Best thing i've learned recently is to print out FilmFour's schedule in advance from their website, then you can catch/vid all the good stuff rather than turning it on in the hope of seeing something ace only to find Trainspotting for the 20th time.

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Worst thing i've learned recently is that I have now posted to ILE more than 2000 times. dg will be tracked down and shot. no, he will be revered and treated to cake. no, he will be hung for his crimes. no, he will be praised and many songs written about his life... (repeat until funny/fade)

Alan Trewartha, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you go to my favourite curry house in central London, if you order a balti it comes in a small bucket shaped container. Num!

Pete, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"a bucket shaped container". that would be a bucket.

Alan T, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"a bucket shaped container". that would be a bucket. (2006...)

Alan T, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe no one has come up with a device to enable humans to eat like horses i.e. one of those bag things you hook over the ears so your whole face is in the food. Not that I would use such a thing of course, I am far too dainty.

Emma, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

last time i checked i was up to like 4,200 posts, but here's a lesson, most of them are as boringly mundane as this one.

jel --, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the food in a horse's nose bag must go all up around their nose/face, for if it was just at the end, you'd eat the bit that was in tongue-radius and then you'd be stuck. the idea of curry all round the face doesn't really appeal. well not now, while sober i suppose.

Alan T, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You could get bits stuck in your nose / hair / eye / beard etc. which would be a lovely treat when you wake up hungry the morning after.

Emma, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahem - Republic Of Ireland 1-0 up at the moment.

Pete, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Germany down to 10 men !

DJ Martian, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The ref is ruining the Germany game. However, the Germans have now scored, thanks to some appalling defending by Cameroon. Much to my surprise, I actually cheered Germany on to score, and not just out of politeness (I was watching the game with a fatalistic German colleague).

Ireland now 2-0 up.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Were Ireland diddled out of an archery medal at the olympics or something?

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought they must have been. These celebrations are getting out of hand now.

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't see the celebration. We didn't make it easy for ourselves but thank god we're through and lets hope perennial underachievers is one cliché we can wheel out again for Spain.

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations Ronan, a real achievement getting there, and a collosal one to reach the 2nd round. The Roy Keane affair may have worked to Ireland's advantage, galvanising the squad etc.

I was sat on the train in The Hague this morning opposite a couple of men slagging off the England team. That was a definite schwalbe (dive).... craply taken penalty... dull football etc . Good job I was travelling with a mate otherwise I'd have given them a right mouthful...I realise how childish this is but still....since when did the Dutch know ANYTHING about taking penalties??

stevo, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[goes into pedantic mode] Since Robbie Rensenbrink, who never missed one, Stevo :)

Yes congrats Ronan, but how are you underarchievers going to beat the real perennial underarchievers. ;) Mmm, probably by punishing our arrogance, I can see them smile already behind their As and Marca, "It's only Ireland, let's check who we play in the quarter- finals."

Germany were depressingly effective again. Loved the second goal though, quite a nice set-up. Second goal by Uruguay this morning wasn't too bad either.

Omar, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Moving Duffer to the wing was tactical genius even if it involved bringing on quinn. Kilbane wasn't too shabby at left back. Ian Harte has had the worst three games of his career, as far as I can see.

Ronan, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Keane fired his invisible bow and arrow at the camera after scoring. Yes, the Spanish will be very smug. The TV commentator just referred to 'the British of Ireland'.

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Ireland will be underestimated by the spanish (obviously something that the Irish can explore).

saw the germany game. The game with most yellow cards in a world cup game evah (16) beating the record which was just set a few hours earlier in the senagal-Uruguay match (12).

you'd think it would ruin the game but it added an edge to the game. A good, physical match as both sides lacked the creativity in midfield.

Cameron should have scored. they had two easy chances and they played better in the first half. The germans rode their luck (there were also two offside decisions that went against cameron) but they had reorganised and scored with their first easy chance. As much as I hate to say the germans deserved it. But a better attack would have killed them.

They will be put out of their misery soon i hope.

Ha ha the French deserve to be knocked out. They were lucky to win Euro 2000 so anybody who talks abt them being unlucky because thy hit the bar many times is talking baloney. The danish are a dangerous team. England need to win their last game of the group phase. I'd prefer if we played Senegal.

Julio Desouza, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The French lost because my evil powers of cursing things my ex likes until he returns my goddamned money is working, that's my theory anyway. I was quite gleeful during the anti-France conversation this morning at my workplace, why any of us cared is pretty well beyond me cos I think only two of us even know anything about the sport.

Ally, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Should England reach the second round is there any chance of using these dark powers against Senegal or Denmark Ally? I'm sure there must be some tenious connection between both countries and your ex if you looked hard enough.

stevo, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well there is certainly a not even tenuous link between France and Senegal.

Pete, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Er, the colonial history, Pete?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'a not even', not 'not even a', Ned.

N., Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha my clumsy phrasing gets the colonials every time.

Pete, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Clarity is mine! I owe Pete a drink.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It doesn't work that way, historical links are not what makes people like bloody sport teams you know. Colorful jerseys are what makes people like sport teams.

Ally, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Q: why are ppl like sports teams?
A: through a tube inserted in the back of its head

mark s, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That should be the punchline to every joke.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Every joke would sound like it was written by Samuel Beckett.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, I'm in the wrong thread.

Ally C, Tuesday, 11 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You’ve got to hand it to the clinical tactical genius of Sven Goran Erikson. A soporific England performance, so exquisitely tedious that by the final whistle half the Nigerian side looked in danger of nodding off.

As for Argentina, adios amigos.

stevo, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought it was a good 90% effort by the England team. We had plenty of shots and even one of them going in would have been "o happy day". Good to lower expectations, we have no new injuries, no-one out due to cards (and all current cards are now wiped) and we play the evening game in Niigata which will be considerably cooler.

Pete, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

boring and workmanlike, but hey, we're through. And like the boys on the Beeb said, Argentina have no one to blame but themselves the cocky bastards.

Im looking to Omar's boys to show us some beautiful footie this afternoon, I hope I'm not disappointed.

BTW the full english was marvellous, and the pint of guinness went down a treat.

I think Sheringham needs to spend the rest of the world cup on the beach with Quinny.

What price Little Rabbit, eh?

PJ Miller, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he was exactly what Argentina needed, an outlet up front who could take the ball and run at goal, unlike Ortega who only seems capable of running down the side of the area to draw a free kick or penalty.

and if I'd been reffing that Sweden v. Argentina game then their goal would have been disallowed, Crespo was encroaching by about 6 yards when the kick was taken, it's no wonder he got to the rebound first!!

Andre Arendse, what a fuck -up, then makes up for it with a lovely save, Bafana Bafana were pushing Spain for a while there but I expect the Spaniards tp pull away in the second half.

¡Oid, mortales! el grito sagrado: ¡libertad, libertad, libertad!. Oid el ruido de rotas cadenas Ved en trono a la noble Igualdad.

Poor South Africa - I was hoping Luque might smack one in (while it was still 2-1 in the Paraguay game) and we'd get the magnificent sporting spectacle of lots. Alternatives to this, anyone? Before goal difference was invented in '62 (around the same time as the laser), we had playoffs for teams level on points. How about 10 minutes each-way five-a-side in an airship above Tokyo?

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Im looking to Omar's boys to show us some beautiful footie this afternoon, I hope I'm not disappointed.

Me cago en dios, they were inspired! Some good periods of fast one touch footie, they way it should be played. Actually I liked this squad way better than the one that played in the first two matches. Esp. the midfield combination of a driven Mendieta and a very capable Xavi. Also nice to see young Joaquin grow into his role. Raul of course great as always. Mmm, with all these big footie nations out of the way we could go places. :)

Omar, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Refereed by Eric Cantona?

the pinefox, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mendieta looked like the hungriest footballer alive today, always searching for the perfect ball, and his free kick was a beauty. So, he's off to Atletico Madrid, yes?

chris, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha fuck the argies! I am SO happy today! Denmark will be tougher than Senegal but if we beat the bacon eating danish we will probably meet Brazil and that should be quite a match (even though I rather we meet senegal).

This world cup is the one where the dark horses have taken over.

Spain have done well, so have england (we are dark horses rather than favourites), Sweden...A very good tournament.

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Queen G of the lamenting anal labias, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Humbling of Argentina: a great transnational co-operative enterprise between England and Sweden, which promises a bright future of mutual respect between us and our dour yet happy Scandinavian partners.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what make things strange for all Pompey fans is that - a scummer Southampton player striked first for Sweden and as Alan Hansen mentioned those Argies even cheated for their goal, Crespo encroached when the penalty was taken, - he was nearly in line with penalty spot ! - then pounced after Headman had blocked the shot. The look on the Argies faces after the final whistle - F-ing CLASSIC !

DJ Martian, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So, he's off to Atletico Madrid, yes?

Word around the campfire is he's off on a loan to Barca. Probably some cheeky Catalan plan to beat the hefty sum (and we're talking big money here) Lazio must pay Valencia if Mendieta returns to the Spanish League within a certain amount of time. Still if Atletico go ahead and get Mendieta they are building quite a team with the rumoured transfers of Riquelme and Javi Moreno.

Oh, must fight the urge to get exicted about Spain, The Curse Of The Penalty looms.

Omar, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

''the only thing england will dine on is its own losing faeces''

Eating shit has its good points. Haven't you seen 'Salo'.

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know if England can beat Brazil, but it's quite encouraging that they are the only team left in our half of the draw that have a stronger rep than us. Otherwise, Denmark are beatable, and so is whoever comes from the other quarter now - only one giant to beat en route to the final isn't bad, though I think we'll need absolute top form or substantial luck to beat Brazil, if etc.

As for Spain, I'm not convinced. Three wins and nine goals is good, obviously, but conceding four goals against three weakish sides is a danger sign. Still, I think Spain can be at least as optimistic as England - their one team to fear will be Italy, who I still fancy making the final from that half.

Martin Skidmore, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FACT: Mendieta owns OVER ONE HUNDRED rock albums. He probably had to leave them behind when he went to Lazio because they weighed so much, that's why he's had such a rotten season.

Real Sociedad fans can often be heard muttering 'we should sign Mendieta' because he's Basque and good. Well, that's what they say, I think it's because they want to tape his records. They can't afford him anyway.

PJ Miller, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But does he have Silver Lady by David Soul? Sorry, I've been talking to Keith.

Looking forward to the second round already. Ireland have finally managed, in the words of Danny Blanchflower, to equalise before the opposition score, Duff looks precocious; they will give Spain, still not as impressive as perhaps they should be, some problems. It could, amazingly, go either way.

Germany should overcome Paraguay, hampered by the Brando-esque liability that is Chilavert. The sight of him pawing the air to gift the Spanish their second goal was fairly tragic. The Germans, as ever, look strong in the face of adversity.

England - Denmark will be ding-dong. England could grind it out, or Denmark could strike with their great flank play. Penalties? It seems the only way England can go these days.

Sweden against Senegal should be another exciting, wholly unpredictable affair. The Africans still seem, even after 3 games, an unknown quantity. The Swedes have already surpassed most people's expectations by getting this far. I expect them to go on.

Ally C, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ireland will be underestimated by spain: Ireland have a chance but spain should beat them.

''England - Denmark will be ding-dong. England could grind it out, or Denmark could strike with their great flank play. Penalties? It seems the only way England can go these days.''

I really wanted england to play senegal! Denmark are a very good team (they won the european championship beating a good german team in the final: no one fancied the danish then) whereas senegal conceded three goals after being 3-0 against uruguay btu we've got them. I really want to see England brazil (have i said that already).

Four years ago denmark played brazil in the quarter finals. a brilliant match. Brazil won 3-2 (as I recall, a very tight game).

If england get through I think we'll beat brazil. I really do! The danish match will be harder.

Sweden should beat senegal. Their defence is terrific and they have henrik larsoon but it will be interesting to see how senegal do.

Do no underestimate paraguay. In '98 only a golden goal took paraguay out (they were playing France and they were definetely playing for penalties then). This is the worst german team I've ever seen. Another really interesting match.

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FACT: Mendieta owns OVER ONE HUNDRED rock albums.

Not only that, he reads *real* books. :) I always figured he should play for Athletic Bilbao, he should be the figura they're lacking in order to recapture former glories. Ideally, Real Madrid should trade F*g* for Mendieta and pay Valencia that stupid fine.

Now re. Spain - Ireland, it seems to go the other way around already there's been talk from the Ireland camp along the lines of "we don't fear Spain, we're feeling invincible." while Spain are muted and humble. Heheheh. Masterful.

I'm on the fence re. Italy who I fancy, but it would be better for Spain to have them out of the competition. Spain always loses to Italy. It's the law.

Omar, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mendieta would be a god if he went to Bilbao, yes. They'll never afford him though til he's past it, unfortunately. Mind you I won't complain if he goes to Barca!!

Edmilsons goal was a thing of beauty and poetry, that game was a peach!

I was always impressed by Zvonimir Boban's high-brow credentials, living in a former Pope's palace, with his huge library stuffed with first editions of existential classics, and his cool beard!!

chris, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I always found Boban's extreme nationalism a bit of a sticking point myself.

After being frogmarched out of the World Cup, the French squad have returned home and all but Emmanuel Petit have refused to greet the 500 strong crowd of well-wishers waiting for them at the airport!!!!

It says so on the BBC.

Good old Petit. He was criticized for choosing not to go to Israel with Chelsea, now nobody will be able to call him a big girl.

PJ Miller, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeff W, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I find it hard to believe Italy won't equalise in the second half but hey.. with this topsy-turvy World Cup WHO KNOWS.

N., Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

[in case anyone hasn't heard: Italy are 1-0 down and Croatia are 0-0 with Ecuador. If Mexico stay on top and Croatia don't lose then Italy are out (and if Italy draw and Croatia win then they are also out)]

N., Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

O NO! Ecuador have scored against Croatia.

N., Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But if Mexico get another goal...how will that change things? I take Italy have scored more goals than Ecuador...

jel --, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mexico would need to score 2 more for Italy to go out if Croatia don't equalise.

I wish I was at home with my interactive TV so I could switch to the Croatia game.

N., Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Del Piero scores. It's all over. Mexico and Italy qualify. Don't think I could have coped with the Italians moaning about Graham Poll if they hadn't qualified.

Mexico to win World Cup, though?

N., Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never loved another human being as much as Allesandro Del Piero. I think he may have turned me gay.
And a big "fuck off" to all the Croats in the house. You can return back to your persecution of Muslims now.
Not that the World Cup turns me into a blind nationalist, or anything.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who knows Nick. Mexico looked really good today, excellent passing team, cool headed, some real class defenders too. Don't know how their path to the finals looks but I wouldn't be too surprised if they reach the semi's.

Italy, sort of a 1982 style qualification innit? Since they "won" against Croatia there's some justice. Though they need to make some drastic changes, the "midfield" with Zanetti and esp. useless Zambrotta doesn't do anything to help Totti and co. Inzaghi needs to be benched too. Still can't believe they didn't bring along Fiore.

Omar, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mexico play runners up in group D next (probably Portugal but maybe USA or South Korea). Then it would be the winners of the Germany-Paraguay match and I'd definitely fancy them for that. Then a semi against Spain, Ireland, Italy or the group D lot again (USA?).

N., Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Italy's problems are many. First off, the defence is nowhere near as rock solid as in recent times. Paolo Maldini's only been brought along on the Hulk Hogan-style nostalgia trip, he's not doing the team any good, and against Ecuador he was actually losing the ball quite regularly.
The midfield could be OK, Zambrotta's been passable, Tomassi anonymous, and Doni could have been better. Di Biagio should be in the starting line-up, but we're still missing the centrocampista that all great Italian teams require. If we could go back in time and bring back Dino Baggio circa 1995, then we'd be laughing.
Del Piero has to go into the starting line-up. Alice band boy was a joke out there today, and the feted Inzaghi arrival did bugger all for me. Vieri's trying his heart out, and Buffon is the best keeper in the world.
Switch back to 4-4-2, because wingbacks in Italian is "il disastero". Keep a cool head, control the pace, and get it to Vieri as quickly as possible. Long ball may be the answer to these pitches to be honest with you.
Forza azzurri...

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm an admirer but I wouldn't be surprised if Totti got dropped after that. He struggled, got booked for yet another ridiculous dive, missed a sitter and some of his corners were staggeringly inept. By contrast Mexico were a joy to watch, lovely passing and movement, solid at the back espec Rafael Márquez.

stevo, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, full respect to Mexico, they deserve to be in the second round, and I'd fancy them for at least the quarters.
On a better note, bring on the bloody Yanks.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, we'll done Italy. In some ways I did want them to go out because I think that would help england but I didn't want them to go out like that. there's a bit of justice there.

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom you're right about Maldini, he didn't look good tonight. 4-4-2 is for me an obvious choice, or at least this ridiculous amount of 5 defenders has to go. Somehow I don't see Totti getting benched, probably he'll play next to Vieri as they did pretty effectively against Ecuador. Tomassi was a bit anonymous today although he robbed a lot balls, he's should be a bit more involved in attacking play though. It's a shame, I really like the idea of the tridente but today there was too big a gap between the 3 attackers and what amounted to basically 6 defenders. And of course Trapatoni will never play both Totti and Del Piero.

Omar, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In some ways I did want them to go out because I think that would help england

Well, they're in the other half of the draw so we can't meet them till the final anyway. If we made it that far I really wouldn't care who we played.

N., Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

On a better note, bring on the bloody Yanks.

Yawn.

Benjamin, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Looks like Belgium have blown it now, anyway.
Sadly true. The trainer has been proven right. Bastard. I can't believe the nerve he has. We could still make it to the next round but I doubt we will.

nathalie, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

N- If we reached the final I'd rather we played, say, Spain, who have never got to the final in their history.

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Belgium?

I quite wanted Italy to depart, but here are three reasons for wanting them in:

a) I like their stretchy blue lycra shirts

b) I think several of them are quite easy on the eye

c) Somehow I like Trapattoni. I like the way he looks, his suit, his expressions and gestures - but more importantly I think he was Juventus coach in the mid-80s, so cannot help liking him somewhat.

the pinefox, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanted Italy to go out, but I wanted Ecuador to win, because our doorman is Ecuadorish, and I thought it might cheer the miserable sod up a bit.

David, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

> If we could go back in time and bring back Dino Baggio

yes please! (stripey _likes_ Dino)

I thought Maldini did well enough against Ecuador. I didn't see the Croatia game so I can't comment on it, but I agree about the Mexico game : Maldini seemed so slow and so overwhelmed. It was sad to watch him (Almost as if he was hiding an injury that's worse than the one we've heard about). Actually, now that I think about it, the entire team seemed to be in a daze when playing Mexico. (Contrast this to the Argentinians and Swedes who, in a similar predicament, were so "there" that it probably affected their aim -- I haven't seen such nail-biting intensity in ages!). I agree too about Inzaghi. He hasn't done much yet -- except maybe as a cheerleader, giving bear-hugs to Vieri whenever he scores. (Is he Vieri's incentive to score?) But what's the solution? I dunno, I guess I'm hoping they'll go back to the strategies and players they used in the first game. Seemed more concise and effective. Why empty your midfield just to add defense or strike-power when you've got Cannavaro and Vieri on the pitch already? It seems redundant. Trap tried his "trident" plan at Fiorentina too, and it didn't work very well there either -- but possibly for different reasons.

stripey, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Woo-hoo. Vive la belgique!

Jeff W, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But what's the solution?

Well, I don't think Vieri and Inzaghi work together, they both are pure strikers. What Vieri needs is someone who plays alongside him, for him. Totti did this quite well against Ecuador but maybe Trap could opt for Delvecchio, who doesn't score that much but also doesn't have a problem with playing for the top striker. At least that I think is the reason Capello uses him with more frequency at AS Roma than Montella, who actually is a better striker.

Ah Belgium, another miracle, 1986 style, would be fun in the next round

Omar, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew Belgium would win. Russia are bloody hopeless. They are the team that is fucking up my complicated sweepstake.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Last 16 Throwdown - but blimey keep on talking about that thriller by all means.

Tom, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What an embarrassing way to advance, but I'll take it para el grandisimo superclassico de CONCACAF. How Jeff Agoos' inclusion in the side is possible now is beyond me-- he is having one of the worst World Cups imaginable (that doesn't involve red cards). Poland ran right at him from the get-go; he lost Olisadebe on the corner kick, allowing an uncontested shot (Jeff Agoos on the ground, watching a goal or near-goal, is a recurring image among US fans), after clearing a ball over the end line under no pressure, and then minutes later, lets his man have a clear shot at the near post in what was one of the worst pieces of man-marking I've ever seen. His removal after a half hour changed the game for us.

This isn't scapegoating, by the way-- Agoos is truly shit, and all the other players know it.

Benjamin, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What a fucked up group!

"Can you say, "annihilation", boys and girls?"

Jesus, absolutely! I'm not patriotic (by any means), but damn, US could only struggle up to score ONE goal? It looked like the entire team was dependent on Reyna to consistently score. For the most part, the US team lacked serious direction.

Pardon me for scraping up a little hope!
