Josh, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

also there is a red+meth 'predominantly white' skit hidden somewhere

making a tape full of your own favorite songs to give to your roommate to play in his jeep so you always get to hear what you like, classic or dud

Josh, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hah josh do you put tony's theme on every mix you make? (not that i disagree - i like tony's theme)

geeta, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, what's that song about anyway? From the lyrics it could just be about a little kid, but for some reason I can't shake the image of some 30 year old retarded guy cruising around town on his bicycle being a super hero. (I always end up using roygbiv to end tapes with too, it's so short, and so good that it, like, catches your attention to let you know the tape's done.)

Dan I., Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha josh still has a blog he's just too embarassed to post there after his "big announcement" (much like someone else coughcough...)

jess, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You bad Blog Killahs, see one day you WILL regret it

Chupa-Cabras, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is that yo la tengo a cover of the william devaughn song?

Ron, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Neutral Milk Hotel song. Could do with some Megadeth.

jel --, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Josh you could post it on my site since I have made no such declaration heh.

Andy K, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Ron, it is. Massive Attack also did a cover of this classique toon. Nevah heard the Yo La Tengo version though.

I never make tapes anymore. Much easier to get all mental about making mix CDs: you can shuffle the songs around 4-evah-&-evah-etc-etc

cuba libre (nathalie), Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

im gonna make tape for nath

Ron, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YAY! Could you put some chick rock on it? :-)

cuba libre (nathalie), Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nath, how will you ever escape the cliche of the female writer dancing around in yr bedroom in yr underwear to angry lesbian rock music?

jess, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dance naked?

cuba libre (nathalie), Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in the streets?

cuba libre (nathalie), Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

to lesbian pop musick?

cuba libre (nathalie), Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

THY WILL BE DONE.

jess, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am the blind man's wet dream.

cuba libre (nathalie), Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha nath, i haf just made tape for di of ALL CHICK ROCK!!!!!! WHO ELSE WANTS CHICK ROCK

Ron, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone wanna trade tapes/cds with me?

(Oh yeah, michael burke i still intend to send a tape to ya!)

jel --, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dan: it is a song about a superhero named tony. it's called 'tony's theme'.

geeta: no but I think I have put a plan song on every tape I've made this year save for the sea and cake one that I made by just leaving 5 cds on shuffle and recording it.

jess: shut up you asswipe I was serious.

Josh, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Was there a theme? Was the sequence important? By asking these questions do I let you guys show how mental I actually am about making mix CDs? Can someone tell me the way to the toilet? Thanks.

cuba libre (nathalie), Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

theme: no

sequence: yes insofar as that's the way I wanted it. gotta put the things I think my roommate won't like as much in strategic places, of course.

Josh, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sometimes i think you only own like 25 cds.

jess, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

27

Josh, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

andy: it's nowhere near as swank as yours.

Josh, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You could always post it on the Art of the Mix site.

Quite impressed by the Yo La Tengo cover version.

Since hearing Soulwax's 2 Many DJs CD I, however, have mix tape block.

Until I get my hands on software that allows me to have Salt 'n' Pepa singing over the Stooges or Skee-lo backed by the Breeders, my mix tapes will always be second best.

Bert, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

josh you are a fucking god make me a tape and i will love you forever.

anthony, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Forever = Long Time

Therefore...

...you know where I'm going with this. Just... Sorry.

JM, Sunday, 9 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bert, THIRD best since I make GRATE ones as well. If only because I too am belgian. We can OBJECTIVELY choose the tunes so they fit together PERFECTLY.

cuba libre (nathalie), Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard of most of these. I am disappointed in you Kortbein. Oh yeah also you are a rockist etc etc, this tape is RUB because it haf the BEATLES on it where o where is the Fall/Moldy Peaches/Help I'm A Fish eh?

Sarah, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there is a band called help i'm a fish? WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO etc. oooohh mmm neutral milk hotel, must remember to drive Rick bonkers with some of that crazy stuff when i get home...

katie, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

GRRRRR

RickyT, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Jeff Magnum live CD is good! I recommend that!

jel --, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh i'll put that on my "things to buy" list. oh come on Rick you always choose the music and drive me mad with your crazy heavy metal records. what about listening to some of what the kids want, eh? ;)

katie, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the kids want NMH? wipe them out... ALL of them

Alan T, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Drive Like Jehu are not heavy metal!

RickyT, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rick is playing it = it is heavy metal. heheheh he always gets so cross when i accuse him of listening to heavy metal, it's so cute!

katie, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thing is, I do actually have some metal stuff, but DLJ are not it. Soundgarden on the other hand...

RickyT, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SPOONMAN! DUH DUH DUH DUH DUH! DUH DUH DUUUUUHHH etc etc etc...

katie, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Soundgarden worship at the altar of rock...get temple of the dog, that's great!

jel --, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i only like the song about the spoons!

katie, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

starry you mixtape pleasure fascist!

Josh, Monday, 10 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I made another one for my other roommate

A:

Palace Music - The Brute Choir, Bedhead - Powder, The Dismemberment Plan - Superpowers, Dirty Three - I Remeber A Time When Once You Used To Love Me, Neutral Milk Hotel - Song Against Sex, Smog - I Was A Stranger, Low - Two-Step, Gastr del Sol - Black Horse, Sleater-Kinney - Get Up, Tom Waits - Downtown Train, Beatles - Revolution 9

Josh, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

using ilx as your own personal filing system, classic or dud

Josh, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

have been thinking that I should just make one tape and start making copies of it

Josh, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

then again this one had no bitchez or hoez

Josh, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And I've heard 5 songs on it. k-rub.

(The first has 3, which is bad enough)

Graham, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i love two step!! it sounded so nice when i saw low play last summer

Ron, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah man I hate it when I hear songs I've heard before

Josh, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Buying 12 or so records you've never heard and a blank CDR + making a mix with a song from each picked at random = best method evah. I did this once...

... er, no. I cannot tell a lie.

I closed the mix with Dio's Rainbow in the Dark, which I had heard before.

Andy K, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but I'm rubbish and a benchmark of what you shouldn't be doing.

Graham, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

josh, do you want to turn yer mate into a manic depressive?

nath @ woik, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha andy we are not all rich kings sitting atop vast piles of wealth with which to get cds. or amg writers.

graham, as long as you put it that way then I am inclined to agree.

Josh, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Everybody now a) (its a cdr) Tom Waits - I Dont Wanna Grow Up, The Vasilines - Jesus Doesnt Want me For A Sunbeam, Sloan Dreaming Of You, Big Star - Thirteen, The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving, Rheostatics - Clair (live), Serge Gainsborough - je Taime... moi non plus, Art Bergman - Hospital Song (earlier electric version), Aphex Twin - Xtal, Black Eyes - January, Mojave 3 - Bringing Me Home again, 13th Floor Elevators - Splash, Cowboy Junkies - 200 Miles, Stone Roses - This Is The One, Rheostatics - You Are Very Star.

Im becoming convinced its my job to spread the love of Art Bergmans music around.

Mr Noodles, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha Josh no see it's just that my priorities are wrong -- I bought actual real clothes for the first time in ovah a year last wkend.

Favorite part of this mix: the part where it goes from "I'll come running to tie your shoes" to "Fucking kill her fucking kill her kill her already kill her," etc.

Andy K, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

3 is the magic number followed by Jus 1 Kiss, nice.

Ronan, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

andy the shellac was a crowd-pleaser for sure! usually it's the gangsta rap (oh it's so awful and nasty) that draws the comments from the girls my roommate plays the tape for. don't know if any of them have caught the juxtaposition tho.

Josh, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 17 December 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

i lost it on the old computer, i'm afraid. it's too jaunty for that tape anyway, i put mine after 'overnight celebrity' by twista n kanye i think! ur probly right about too many trax tho.

DVD-Rs will overtake CDRs in popularity, MP3 decoding capability will become the norm in hi-fis, leading to 1000 track mixes. "Did you like the transition between track 562 and 563? I spent ages getting that right."

can't bookend a mix w.an original & its remix

but you can w.no reproach use it as second and penultimate

or have the tracks seperated by a ratio of 8:5, I think

I don't think I've ever put two mixes of the same track in one mix - but when I DJed at club Freaky Trigger, I started with the tune that has the horn part used in Crazy In Love, and ended with the Beyonce track. I don't know how many people noticed...

Ikara Colt? Is your girlfriend from 2001?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 December 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, that sounds like a really neat party. I'm going to steal that idea some time. You'll have to post the mixes you end up with at the end of the night.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 23 December 2005 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Jaymc left his mixes at my party, but I will get them to him soon.

I drew two CDs tonight.

One is called Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Mixtape and consists entirely of covers of 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child' - by Price, Boney-M, Ramsey Lewis, Odetta, and about 15 others.

Eazy (Eazy), Friday, 23 December 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

Nice. I was just about to call you and say yo I left my mixes at your party, but my phone is dead.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 December 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea who ended up with my mix! I want to know what they think!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 December 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

You bastards. I wanna get copies of your mixes. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 23 December 2005 08:19 (twenty years ago)

you can't put hide and seek at the beginning wtf!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 December 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

WAIT WHY? When I started planning the mix, the only thing I was sure of was that I wanted to start with "Hide and Seek."

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 23 December 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

I am being indie here but when I listen to tht it takes me a little while to readjust to wanting to hear anything else...

hardcore cornography!!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 December 2005 09:14 (twenty years ago)

can't bookend a mix w.an original & its remix

why not?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:32 (twenty years ago)

you just can't! 2nd and penultimate is just cheesy enough

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

you all like nick hornby. fuck the rules.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

I made a mixtape, too, but I'm having hell with getting everything the right volume.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

do you guys actually mix? i'm out of the game. long-term g/f: no mixtapes from me.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:38 (twenty years ago)

fuck the rules? enrique, really now?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

I mix where I need to! Maybe very slightly less.

gf mixes are pretty different to potential-gf mixes, aren't they? I wonder what guess-rate I could hit on a blind listening test.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

I got a mix back; can you guess one track that's on it?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

i'm not going to make a mix tape for someone i live with. afaic, mixes are for 'potential girlfriends'. but by mix i mean, do you have decks and shit? or use some kind of software?

with tapes, i likes the freedom to use 'bits' of records, but, being an IT dunce, i don't know how to do this, when burning CDs.

the rules are there to be fucked, cozen.

xpost 'can i have it like that'?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

yes but "fuck the rules" /= "the rules are there to fucked"

the second one I can get with; and so the first I can't

am I being too oblique here? I feel I am

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

czn, junior boys, "last exit (fennesz rmx)"?

I am meaning, with software.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

do all my C90s in ableton

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

"ableton"?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

there's no way to get trick me (tiefswarz rmx) sounding even okay on shitty discman speakers, is there?

superheroes of bmx instead maybe? or what?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 23 December 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

no wait, that's totally wrong. it needs to be something really big, but still quite cold?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 23 December 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 26 March 2008 05:13 (eighteen years ago)

I can't tell how it flows without hearing it, but any mix that ends with "I Wish" and has The Sea and Cake on it is okay by me.
