"Pray For Our Troops Hoodie"
God is with you.

http://www.c28.com/productimages/guys_PFOTHoodieBLK_main_300.jpg

"Pray for our troops" reads across a ribbon that's tied around the NOTW logo. Hidden in the stripes of the flag is the scripture: "For the Lord your God is the One who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory." Deut 20:4. "Jesus" is found at the end of the ribbon showing it's only through Him we can even pray. It is by Jesus dying for us that we have victory "By His stripes we are healed". Isaiah 53:5

Laughing so hard at 'Ex-Masturbator"

chap, Thursday, 30 July 2009 13:26 (sixteen years ago)

No, actually it would mean only 10000 abstinent people have existed throughout the history. Still, not a particularly high score for abstinence! That number would mean only a small minority of even nuns and monks and Catholic priests have been abstinent.

The alternative interpretation is, of course, that one Jesus gets born for every 10000 abstinent people. But I'm sure that's not what they are trying to say.

Tuomas, Thursday, 30 July 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

I think that must be what it means. 0.01% of people who are abstinent get pregnant.

xxp

The point is that all church-goers are not the Xtians they say they are, and just going to church won't get you into heaven.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 30 July 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

Ned, it's not confusing if you understand that evangelicals are sort of aligned against a lot of more workaday Christians by their belief that only a certain kind of conversion experience and daily spiritual inspection can make you a "real" Christian.

They particularly rail against a sort of straw-person who protests, "But I was baptised and I go to church every week, I'm already a Christian!"

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 30 July 2009 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

xp
I sort of assumed it was something like that but it still seems to read a bit weird. I mean the answer is always 'NO' (erm...unless you are a car) but going to church you might still actually be a Christian.

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 30 July 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

But then how could a car be a Christian?

Ned Trifle II, Thursday, 30 July 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)

The significance is in the word "make" -- you can go to church and either be a Christian or not be one, but it won't MAKE you one either way.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Thursday, 30 July 2009 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

Hillary had Everest in his veins (sunny successor), Thursday, 30 July 2009 15:01 (sixteen years ago)

Oh the ones with the colored stripes, that's practically an encoded message. It's like a kids' Sunday School activity, you make little flip books with those specific colors of paper, or felt, or something cheap, and each color represents an idea or event that's important to evangelical belief. Red for the shed blood of Christ, black for our sins, white for forgiveness that makes us whiter than snow, etc. When they're put in order, they "tell the story" of redemption.

I really didn't know that masturbation was a sin, but Dr. Ty put me straight.

Masturbation is what I'd like to call, tormenting pleasure. The three second blissful orgasm achieved by masturbation is just as much tormenting as it is pleasurable. Because God never created solo sex.

Oh for crying...First off, I'm a philosophy graduate, I know logic. An anti-abortion shirt is not a Christian shirt. It's an anti-abortion shirt. And I reserv the right, as a Christian, to say that people so filled with hate as the people who made these, are straying quite far from Christ's message. This is, of course, a Scotsman's fallacy (but I'm also a Scot), but I do find it insulting to be lumped in with people, as you would to be lumped in with people who share one set of beliefs, but not another. To look at it in the maths sense, these beliefs are not Christian beliefs, they are beliefs that are a subset of some Christians. Most Christians are anti-death penalty, for example, but the USA's cultural primacy would give people the opposite idea.

but isn't it determined by the core tenets of the religion rather than the amassed beliefs of the believers? like, if your church's doctrine is pro-choice, it's unfair to label that specific sect as anti-abortion. but if you're talking about the teachings of christianity, like, in a vortex, then whether people heed the text is irrelevant.

i wimped out of wanting to make this argument earlier because it's kind of like trying to convince someone "no, you don't understand, you're a racist". just saying is all.

Haha Mormon t-shirts are all dumb in-jokes. And confusing.

http://8apparel.com/images/P/hethinkswairplaneonblank.jpg

Two years is a long time as you may have already realized after 3 weeks. You don't want to send him the Dear John for fear it will mess up his "focus". Your new boyfriend will know he's the only one when you fashionably wear this subtle and funny LDS t-shirt.

http://8apparel.com/images/P/earthweb.JPG

When you think of you're family, always remember the planet they're on, cuz it can get confusing. This t-shirt captures the essence of that important LDS song and you may want to wear it "through all eternity".

http://8apparel.com/images/P/Fast-Sunday-01.jpg

Fast Sunday
Ironically enough, this day may be the slowest day of them all. Hang in there, the blessings received can be quite satisfying. To help curb that craving, wear this Mormon tee to remind you how hungry you are...or will be.

A lot of this is kinda abstract, but my town has been been overrun with a group called 'Christians Linked Across The Nation' or some such (an evangelical group) the past couple of weeks, and they really wear shirts like this - admittedly a bit more subtle, that look like band shirts or whatever. They kicked up a fuss in my church because the Reverend gave a sermon supporting gay rights, and of a generally socialist bent (which lost of the Kirk are, and Christian Socialism was one of the driving forces of British Socialism.) But I spent like a week going 'Faith! Sorg was a pretty good album!' to confused stares.

I dunno, PP -- I don't think the suicide martyr comparison is really there for ya. There's a weird thing w bible-thumpers where they create a ton of straw-people to stand in opposition to (evolutionists, college professors, people who think going to church makes you a Christian, people who live in cities, etc) but on the whole, because EVERYONE AROUND THEM BASICALLY BELIEVES THE SAME THING, they consider themselves normal and not fringey at all.

The fact that presenting their faith as "extreme" while actually being like everyone else in your town are ideas in OPPOSITION to each other, is kind of lost.

Maybe I don't think of people who just go to church as a social tie as being part of the body of Christians?

And on the other side of things, I can say most Christians are pretty OK because I just define "Christian" as anyone who thinks this Jesus guy is the way to something they refer to as "heaven." Church-going, not church-going, etc.

Obnoxious t-shirt wearing "Christians" are a different thing altogether and that's what the thread's about, and I will gladly be amused by their antics and shirts.

Yeah, weirdly I was taught that Catholics ARE Christians, but I was taught that as if it were something that had to be pointed out, like I might have thought otherwise. Apparently among some Protestant denoms there's quite a lot of feeling against Catholics.

ha, no, really :-)

ailsa, Thursday, 30 July 2009 22:44 (sixteen years ago)

When I first moved here, a lot of coworkers asked me, "So are you a Catholic, or are you a Christian?" which is an awkward dichotomy in so many ways.

a muttering inbred (called) (not named) (Abbott), Thursday, 30 July 2009 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

Oh lord, I should have specified American ones! I think US Proddies object to the Catholics more on spiritual/theological grounds, like their worship is so impersonal and ritualistic that it doesn't count as heart-felt anymore. Plus Marian theology, hoo boy.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Thursday, 30 July 2009 22:47 (sixteen years ago)

I do remember having to explain in the past that Roman Catholicism was Christian, partly because I didn't have to go to non-denominational Christian church services at school for reasons of having a particularly denominational religion.

Anyway, can we just go back to laughing at folk who display their Christianity by way of insane t-shirts?

um...okay...all cleared up now....

Kevin John Bozelka, Friday, 31 July 2009 08:38 (sixteen years ago)

Ok, it's a joke about how the "person at the moment of conception" people love to point out that fetuses have the same body parts as adults, and at what week they develop them, as if such things are relevant to the larger argument. It's all just emotional manipulation. So unborn babies not only having fingernails, which they do, but taking the time to buff them... that's kind of funny.

never name anything coolpix (kenan), Friday, 31 July 2009 09:09 (sixteen years ago)

Like, if you're going to ascribe one irrelevant trait from fully formed humans to the unborn, why not more?

Mr Luzzatto's claims, splashed across a full page of Corriere della Sera, Italy's best-selling daily, were furiously denounced by Pietro Siffi, president of the Catholic Anti-defamation League. Why is the Saint Peter text upside down?

The Annuario Pontificio gives the year of Peter's death as A.D. 64 or A.D. 67. Early church tradition (as indicated below) says Peter probably died at the time of the Great Fire of Rome of the year 64. Margherita Guarducci, who led the research leading to the rediscovery of Peter’s tomb in its last stages (1963-1968), was of the opinion that Peter died on October 13 A.D. 64 during the festivities on the occasion of the “dies imperii” of Emperor Nero. This took place three months after the disastrous fire that destroyed Rome for which the emperor wished to blame the Christians. This “dies imperii” (regnal day anniversary) was an important one, exactly ten years after Nero acceded to the throne, and it was ‘as usual’ accompanied by much bloodshed. Traditionally, Roman authorities sentenced him to death by crucifixion. According to the apocryphal Acts of Peter, he was crucified head down.

is it meant as a conversation starter?

These shirts are conversation starters, whether the wearer likes it or not. Which, again, is why you can't wear them with ironic distance in mainstream public spheres. You first have to explain the shirt (even the simpler ones; sample dialogue: "oh kewl you have a Mountain Dew/Yoo-Hoo t-shirt...no wait...that's not Mountain Dew/Yoo-Hoo...what is that?") and then explain your snarky stance. Confused stares and uncomfortable silences ensue.

according to wikipedia, these are the people excommunicated in the 21st century

* Eduardo Aguirre, Guatemalan Catholic priest, now bishop of the Brazilian Catholic Apostolic Church[1]
* Call to Action group members in Nebraska were excommunicated by Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz, Vatican later confirmed their excommunication.[2]
* Emmanual Milingo, former archbishop of Lusaka, for consecrating four married priests as bishops. Also excommunicated were those receiving consecration.[3]
* The Community of the Lady of All Nations for heretical teachings and beliefs after a six-year investigation. The declaration was announced by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops on September 12, 2007.[citation needed]
* Rev. Dale Fushek and Rev. Mark Dippre. Former Priests were issued a Decree of Excommunication by Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted for operating "an opposing ecclesial community" in direct disobedience to orders to refrain from public ministry.[4]
* Father Marek Bozek (since laicized by Pope Benedict XVI), and the lay parish board members of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in St. Louis, Missouri in December 2005 were declared guilty of the ecclesiastical crime of schism by then-Archbishop Raymond Leo Burke.[5] Their excommunication was ratified by the Vatican in May 2008. (Four of the parish board members have since reconciled with the Church.)
* Mother of a nine-year old Brazilian rape victim, for obtaining an abortion for her daughter. Also the doctors performing the abortion. [6]

you could probably sell a couple of tshirts to these people I suppose

Her story is not really believable -- I mean, I'm sure she believes it, and maybe it's true that she became an absolute MADWOMAN for fiddling her bits, but it sounds like she's stuck in a feedback loop, rather than having anything like normal human desires. Not only is she denying herself the occasional harmless wank, her self esteem has become in part based on her ability to resist the urge to sexually gratify herself. So these "urges" are not even sexual urges after a point, they are necessary only to have something to resist so that Jesus will be more proud of her. This is WAY weirder than having a moment or two to yourself once in a while.

Sorry, I'm getting over-animated about this. It's just that... these people mess with your head, bad.

its esp weird to watch someone talking about this cuz invariably yr just eventually just picturing them masturbating furiously

Of course you are, and you are expected to. According to this girl's testimony, no human being has ever masturbated as furiously as she once did. I can't even picture it realistically, because what she's describing is porno-surreal. The only point of this is to make you, the teenager, think about masturbation a WHOLE WHOLE LOT, really intensely, and at the same time make you feel hideously guilty about thinking about masturbation. This works on teenagers like gangbusters. As propaganda goes, it's up there with showing pregnant women pictures of botched third trimester abortions and telling them that they will be next if they don't have the child. It's just such pure evil.

ok rox a lot of times before a dude goes on his two-year mission, his steady sweetie will promise to 'wait for him,' ie not have any new relationships while he's doing his missionary thing. So the shirt is saying this classic lols of no girl ends up actually not-dating for two years...eventually she'll drop him for some handsome man with a keg of root beer and some skee-ball tokens.

the idea being AFTER the two years of waiting that the young couple will get married in the temple & be in <3 for all eternity

roxy it is SUCH a cliche thing that there is a movie w/that as a major plot point (the R.M., short for 'returned missionary')

In most high schools in America being a virgin can be equivalent to being a loser. This is a lie that Satan has been telling forever. The concept of virginity is amazing. A person can actually love their spouse with their body before they even meet them. Living a pure life is both a defensive and offensive way of living. It is defensive for it protects our own body and soul from harm and offensive for purity shines in a dark culture of sin.

This is a bold T-Shirt, that makes a statement about your desire for sexual purity. If you wear it, do it with pride and also humility. You can have pride that Christ has made us clean and has protected us from being taken out by sexual sin, and humility that it is only by the grace of Christ that we are not as far into the muck as our neighbors and our friends.

I think it was an Upright Citizens Brigade bit that had a group reading fortune cookies and playing the "in bed" game, and when the first cookie seemed to insult one guy's masculinity, he took another cookie out of the bowl, and another, etc, and the fortunes kept getting worse and worse until they said things like, "You're a limp-dick faggot."

And in an almost Python-esque over-the-top gesture, the bit ends with him banging his wife right there on the table, to prove himself.

Not fundamentalist or anything (it's Orthodox St. Seraphim of Sarov) but a pretty cool image for a t-shirt nonetheless. He spent a lot of time reclused in the Russian forests in prayer, pretty cool story behind him if you ever look him up.
