tbh i love pizza prob more than almost any other food but this past year i've really been getting into hot sandwiches made w/ really good bread

mark cl, Friday, 31 July 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man. See, the thing is, I eat sandwiches SO MUCH that right now pizza sounds more appealing. But part of the reason I eat sandwiches so much, apart from laziness (it's what I make at home when I'm too lazy to cook, and it's what I buy for lunch when I don't have anything to bring from home) is that they're so versatile, and a really well-made sandwich can be sublime.

jaymc, Friday, 31 July 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

yah as much as i love pizza, sandwiches are more versatile (as jaymc said) and basically include pizza via the calzone (as pancakes herman said)

I call bias in the photo choices, that pizza looks like an abortion

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 31 July 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago)

this is tough, because there are a lot of sandwiches i strongly dislike. but a good sandwich is one of the best things around. tougher to make a really transcendent pizza imo.

normally i would vote for sandwiches over pizza (even though pizza is pizza), but last night i had one of my favorite sandwiches in town (a banh mi-like pork sandwich) and got a really weird stomach ache for the rest of the night, so i'm voting pizza out of spite.

Modern, Pepe's and Sally's are consistently rated among the best pizzerias in the United States, giving this geographically-limited pizza style considerable culinary and historical importance.[2][3]

mark cl, Friday, 31 July 2009 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

As a vegetarian (and britisher), pizza only comes with very limited options, like, cheese or some veg or whatever. Sandwiches are right with thousands of different flavours, and usually have better bread when done properly. Sandwiches.

Come on guys, pizza is the best. Sandwiches are good, but they're either boring or over-complicated and rarely anywhere in between. (I do adore a good croque monsieur but a) that is beyond sandwich, and b) it's still not as good as pizza.)

it's when u get into the paninis or other hot sandwiches that this becomes difficult

sandwiches can be some boring as fuck imo - eg pb & j, prob my least favorite meal growing up. lunch would be some depressing event when all i had was a pb & j

but paninis are a totally different beast

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 31 July 2009 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

They're both essentially food on bread and while pizza may be a little more time-consuming to make, a good deal of my sandwiches are grilled or served on toast and bear more than a little resemblence to pizzas. On the whole, I'd have to go with the greater versatility of the sandwich.

sandwiches is just too vague and nebulous a category. this is like "modern music vs beethoven" or some shit. pizza is pizza, there's little debate as to what qualifies as one (cue the debate). and it is awesome. so pizza wins.

the French are to blame obv, as usual

The Italians can so be just as snooty over their better wines as the French. I blame the English. It's British toffs who sneer at beer while they drink their French wine. In France, peasants and workers drink a little ballon (or two or four) de rouge all the time.

I will grant that a pizza has a little more aesthetic potential, being a baked canvas for colors, etc.

But taste? Potential combinations? as fields notes, convenience/portability?

Do not be swayed by the song and dance of the pizza. Sandwiches are always there for you. Always.

yea surm that's true. i like the sharing/social aspect of pizza. the party sub doesn't look that good imo.

also, the party sub looks cold. i'm sticking w/ my thing that a sandwich better be a hot sandwich, some panini-type thing or grilled to compete w/ pizza. if it's hot then it's real contest imo but if it's some coldcut bs then pizza's on a whole other level

how the fuck did I not see this thread

have had more revelatory sandwich experiences than pizza experiences, but the finest pizza experiences are not to be fucked with

but I'm not American so how the fuck do I have the authority to vote

hello you are very gnocchi i would like taco you in the (country matters), Monday, 3 August 2009 16:37 (fifteen years ago)

my answer basically depends on the bread in the sandwich. if it is exquisitely crisp and toasted, or if it is soft and wholesome, rather than papery, massy, coarse or overly grainy, then the sandwich can spread its wings. pizza has the natural advantage of less bread, allowing toppings in turn to be more delicate, but sandwiches can be so full-on

am yet to decide

T/S: dipping crusts in garlic and herb butter vs. crunching through fifteen layers of bresaola, mushroom, onion relish, mozzarella, salad, olives, artichokes, sundried tomatoes, taleggio, dolcelatte and basil

usually when I have pizza it is thin-base and really quite hard to fuck up. certainly i'd notice less if the bread wasn't cooked quite right. sandwich bread is more important to the sandwich than the base is to a pizza imo

hello you are very gnocchi i would like taco you in the (country matters), Monday, 3 August 2009 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

um, no

Four-TEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN! (HI DERE), Monday, 3 August 2009 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

sandwich bread can be cooked or uncooked, it can be crisped, toasted, it can be slightly grainy, or it can be smooth, there are so many more variables

whereas a pizza base is a slab of dough that is stone-baked until it is nice and crispy, pretty hard to fuck up afaic

ian, Monday, 3 August 2009 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

This is good advice. the porous nature of the bread will prevent spillage far better than meat, cheese or lettuce. This also works for tomatoes.

what i been doing at work is 'toasting' bread 1-sided on the flat top at work and melting cheese over the avocado into the soft side of the bread but i feel like there should be a way to cram it into a stack of veggies that it won't create a sandwich fault line.

don't try to church it up (nickalicious), Monday, 3 August 2009 23:57 (fifteen years ago)

In my extensive torta experience the avocado is almost always sliced thin and laid down the centerline of the sandwich. You're definitely not getting it in every bite, but it's not squeezing out the sides, either.

This is not counting the torta aguacate, in which the avocado is the main filling of the sandwich. That shit gets everywhere no matter what.
