I suggested photos taken at 5:30am (after an adjacent couple on the July thread that happened to be taken at that time) but I don't think the response was terribly enthusiastic. Can't think why.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 2 August 2009 22:20 (sixteen years ago)

So, er, yeah, if we're not doing the 5:30am thing, here's me today, not at 5:30am, having lunch in an enormous branch of Sainsbury's in SE London. Livin' the life.

Sydenham, actually. Multi-birthday BBQ next week, so hooj shop at the hoojest shop within a coupla miles. And it's not bad for a supermarket caff.

(And thanks! Taken by Pam, natch. No post-processing, just Canon's own saturation/contrast all-the-way-to-11 settings.)

I present: the shirt with the second button that's too high. A tragedy of Seinfeldian proportions.

You can't win.

reared on Shakespeare (kenan), Monday, 3 August 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

tbh I enjoy a button there -- it gives you options

nabisco, Monday, 3 August 2009 18:59 (sixteen years ago)

on the one hand you can look very put-together and a bit stern; on the other you can look loose and casual without much actual chest-exposure. with a lower button your options are either "normal" or "let me find a medallion and some chest hair"

nabisco, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

hahah no that is definitely a no-win shirt

tehresa, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

StanM, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:02 (sixteen years ago)

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Monday, 3 August 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

I don't feel put-together and stern, though, I feel like a big dorkface. And the second button undone is just a little more loose and casual than I want to, say, go to the bank looking.

reared on Shakespeare (kenan), Monday, 3 August 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

Laurel: Yeah, there are better plaids in the world as well. But that's not my main concern. I figure plaid can get by with being a little bit ugly, since it started out as plaid, anyway.

Is that a long-sleeved or short-sleeved shirt, kenan?

a muttering inbred (called) (not named) (Abbott), Monday, 3 August 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

well, moderation in everything. owning a good mix of standard-button shirts and high-button shirts will give you three usable options. owning only standard-button ones will give you ... just one.

Psst, Jordan. Ben Shermans. You are not one of those scrawny boys, and if THEY can find shirts that fit, so can you.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Monday, 3 August 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

Hint: go to the store and find your size, then check ebay.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Monday, 3 August 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

you have a lot more leeway in getting sleeves the right circumference in long sleeve shirts. the sleeves of short sleeves have to be a little tighter to look ok, i find, which leaves less margin for error/ballooning waistline.

xpost - Laurel I think it works the other way around, actually, shirt-wise, or at least it works a whole bunch of different ways, having to do with width of your shoulders versus the length of your torso and the width of the rest of it. (skinny dudes will often have an easier time. depending.)

nabisco, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

velko, Monday, 3 August 2009 19:43 (sixteen years ago)

Rolled-up lon-sleeve shirts are great, but when you're dealing with Texas heat they're not much more comfortable than unrolled. And it's all but impossible to find short-sleeve button-downs that aren't butt-ugly except for faux-Western shirts (which are fine, most of the time, but I already own a couple). Gap has a couple of fugly styles, J. Crew has none in the only store nearby.

Yet, with various fx, we can make it seem interesting and varied, right?

Lostandfound, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 05:43 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and not wishing to be creepy just complimentary, Sunny River, you are rocking an especially pretty Polly Jean Harvey look!

Lostandfound, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 05:44 (sixteen years ago)

i am not sure what that is! but wow it is impressive!
i need more plants.

tehresa, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 05:46 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know what that plant is exactly, either, but my grandmother would call it "Devil's Ivy." Then again, she calls a lot of things Devil's Ivy. All ivy, ficas trees, rhododendrons, the cat...

reared on Shakespeare (kenan), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 06:05 (sixteen years ago)

i want a ficus! they are so temperamental, but also so great!

tehresa, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 06:06 (sixteen years ago)

They are not temperamental once you get them into one corner that gets a bit of sunlight every day, doesn't matter how much as long as it's some, and then never breathe near it again.

philodendron. the plant. i think so, anyway.

the one in back???

tehresa, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 06:34 (sixteen years ago)

I'm thinking it might be a triffid, but I'm typing that quietly 'cos it's still right behind me...

Lostandfound, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 06:42 (sixteen years ago)

the one in back???

The ivy, and she's right, as far as every google search tells me. I didn't even know the one in back was in play.

reared on Shakespeare (kenan), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 06:46 (sixteen years ago)

no i guessed the ivy was philodendron. but then we were looking at the larger plant (which i thought referred to the one in back).

tehresa, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 06:47 (sixteen years ago)

it is a mystery.

tehresa, Tuesday, 4 August 2009 06:47 (sixteen years ago)

All we know for certain is that it refers to its owner by name, and asks to be fed all night long.

reared on Shakespeare (kenan), Tuesday, 4 August 2009 06:49 (sixteen years ago)

so to recap:
wdyll august 2009 = shirts and plants with minimal photographs.

Ned Trifle (Notinmyname), Thursday, 6 August 2009 12:29 (sixteen years ago)

I thought a cockle was a wrinkle or a fold, which combined with the common phrase I always put together in my mind with a nutsack. "Ah, that really warms my cockles. Meaning that it loosens my nutsack. I tell you, I am swinging low as a sweet chariot right now."

Oh, whitebait! If that's on the menu - I'm eating it.

Anyway - a quick search reveals that...

"Cockles of the heart have nothing to do with the cockles and mussels Sweet Molly Malone used to sell.the word comes from the Latin phrase 'cochleae cordis,' meaning 'ventricles of the heart,' while the shellfish 'cockle' comes from the Latin 'conchylium,' meaning 'conch shell.'" From "Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins" by William and Mary Morris (HarperCollins, New York, 1977, 1988).

Sorry for the diversion but I was intrigued. Carry on.

Still, that is a great tshirt.

I generally don't like dark-coloured t-shirts, but the design in this one was so nice I had to get it. Jellyfish are cool!

I'm not sure I understand what was going on there, though. Is the protest meant to be a kind of promotion? Because those samples are kind of awesome.

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Saturday, 15 August 2009 15:48 (sixteen years ago)

Also, is that the same technique as heard here?

or have I become completely absurd? (kenan), Saturday, 15 August 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

Well, John Berndt is a friend and I like his music (and the new record is going to be cool) and yeah the "protest" was kind of just people teasing their friends but I *do* disagree with some of the claims in the manifesto/theoretical text he's written about his new music- I think "relabi" is a useful word for something that's been around a long time, not a new compositional discovery- I don't think it's a new idea to make music that fucks with your sense of timing- tons of people have done this (Starfuckers to Morton Feldom to lotsa jazz). But it was mostly about being silly and having some fun.

gbx, all you have to do is fly to Portland, rent a car, drive 300 miles to the hamlet of Medical Springs, OR (pop. 35), then drive another 20 miles on twisty logging roads, get out of the car at the wilderness boundary, walk 9 miles, cross several small rivers and climb up 3000 ft and you're there!

ljubljana, Friday, 21 August 2009 01:47 (sixteen years ago)

Coyness is the British way! Erm, excuse me, erm, you dropped something, alsoyou'requitedelightfulontheeye ahem excuse me yes...it's how we show we mean it...

Actually, the older I get, the more that directness seems to be the righteous path. Viva saying it straight. Sometimes, e.g. on a public webforum it can come across as a nameless wolf-whistle from the stalls and so one can be forgiven for taking a slightly more circuitous route, but the dangers are perhaps overstated, especially if you're posting your own pic.

You are Rebels! You are all yankees (country matters), Friday, 21 August 2009 01:59 (sixteen years ago)

neat lung (╓abies), Friday, 21 August 2009 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

Actually I think I wanna retract that, forwardness seemed delegated to most forms of goodwill other than this sorta thing iirc.

neat lung (╓abies), Friday, 21 August 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, good point about teh internets being kind of different that way. It's like you have to just pay a compliment then move on, don't extend it, because compliments, after all, are good things in themselves and nothing else should hang on them, maybe?

As for Britishers, having been one once, I always felt that they (as a people, and this of course is massively generalising to the point of incoherence), that they're a weird mix of coy and bawdy, much earthier than (say) Americans, yet simultaneously more shy. It's inexplicable, really. (iow, ╓abies on the right track.)

After I collected myself I went up to him and explained that while I wouldn't ordinarily bother him my friend was getting hitched and was a big fan etc. He was very sweet and patient with our fucked up selves and posed for a bunch of pics before disappearing into the night with a very young and very handsome little twink.
