I hate the idea/existence of cars the most, but still end up using them, and would rather take a 50 mile car trip than a 50 mile bus trip. So what should I be voting for?

iatee, Wednesday, 5 August 2009 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

planes are the worst but mostly because of airlines, also not enough room for anyone over 5'6" or so

i hate cars because you have to park them somewhere, and they're expensive and pollutey and drivers are rude to non-drivers. i like bus for the most part.

blobfish russian (harbl), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

aw but they're all good, except planes, because I've never been on one. Also bikes, which are conceptually great but I'm the only person in the world who can't ride one. Fuck you, bikes, I'm giving you my vote.

blobfish russian (harbl), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

Nothing is more physically uncomfortable than a plane (in coach, anyway, but I have never sat in 1st class). It still doesn't look like optimum fun.

I feel that whining about air travel is fair and deserved. When you have developed and capitalized a common mode of mass transport, and done so in a way that makes the most profit while making the most customers as unhappy as possible as long as any other choice is untenable, well... eat my ass, airlines.

Black bread and Victory gin AGAIN? (kenan), Thursday, 6 August 2009 01:30 (sixteen years ago)

It's like, look, I understand, jet fuel is insanely expensive. And you are going to want to cram as many people on a plane as possible. My bitch, I guess, is that planes are designed to cram more people inside than is reasonably comfortable for ANYONE, and then on top of that there's the awful service, the awful food, the lack of throwing people even the smallest scrap when the airline fucks up, which they often do, and now... NOW... there's that whole security thing. And there are airports -- O'Hare in Chicago is a premium example -- that are completely inadequate for the number of people that are forced to go through them every day. It's not as if the airlines are going to pony up cash to make them better. Fuck no. That would be like... I dunno... cell phone companies building shared infrastructure or something.

Cabs are expensive, yes, and sometimes smell weird if not outright awful, and are sometimes driven by someone who won't shut up or drives like a bleeding maniac or both. But cabs are completely optional. You always know what you're in for when you hail a cab. It's worth it if you're going to the airport, or it's zero degrees and snowing out, of if you are just feeling lazy. I would never bitch about the price of a cab. I could have totally gone another way, and I didn't, so it's all on me.

Black bread and Victory gin AGAIN? (kenan), Thursday, 6 August 2009 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

I like cabs when you can smoke in them.

I like those especially, because it's against the law here now, but if you ask, some cabbies will be like, "Ok, crack a window." And some cabbies obviously smoke themselves, and you know either because the cab reeks of it or because they have a lit cigarette in hand when you get in. And when you're riding home drunk off your ass and paying $15-$20 for the privilege, it's REALLY nice to light one up.

Black bread and Victory gin AGAIN? (kenan), Thursday, 6 August 2009 03:00 (sixteen years ago)

it's also interesting how taking a cab puts a real dollar amount on the use of an automobile, even if there is a markup. you realize that there's an expense attached to things like sitting in traffic, or driving 10 miles.

irritating freepers and morbsists alike (get bent), Thursday, 6 August 2009 03:02 (sixteen years ago)

Most cabs I have taken, the driver takes the fastest way possible, because there is a fairly hefty minimum rate, such that it's more profitable to get as many fares as possible.

i've never been on a tram, but I drive by the Roosevelt Island one all the time, as I live in Queens, and all I can think about is the time just a few years ago when it got stuck up there for 6 hours. SIX HOURS!

Sorry, SEVEN HOURS!

On April 18, 2006, at about 5:22 p.m. EDT, two trams were stuck over the East River for seven hours because of mechanical problems, trapping 69 people. Rescue baskets capable of holding up to 15 people were sent up to the stranded cable cars at 10:55 p.m., with children and elderly going first, and each rescue taking about 20 minutes. These baskets also carried supplies to the trams, such as blankets, baby formula, and food, for the remaining passengers.[3] Passengers on the Roosevelt Island-bound tram were rescued by about 2:55 a.m. on April 19, while those on the Manhattan-bound tram were not rescued until 4:07 a.m.[4]

Two tram cars passing each other above Manhattan
The April 2006 incident was the second time in eight months the tram system lost power. On September 2, 2005, more than 80 people were trapped on the tram for over 90 minutes. After that incident, state inspectors cited the Roosevelt Island Tramway for not having an operational diesel backup, or MG set system. The State Department of Labor said the system did not pass electrical inspection and could not run when the April 18 power outage took place.
The tramway suspended operations after the April 2006 incident, re-opening on September 1, 2006. The tram's backup electrical systems were refurbished, and "in case of an emergency, each car now is equipped with blankets, water, food and a toilet with a privacy curtain. Car attendants will carry cell phones with their radios."

I don't think it's fair to put "planes" on the same poll as "whatever grindingly awful mode of transportation I use in daily life to get to work or buy groceries without freezing to death."

Everybody would pick "walking" if there was really a choice.

Flying is something completely different.

I don't think it's fair to put "planes" on the same poll as "whatever grindingly awful mode of transportation etc etc

The man has a point, but one that raises more questions. Flying is something you do when it's the most practical option, or the only option. And it's a pain in the ass. Driving is something that, at least in the US, most people have to do or else their lives are between incredibly difficult and literally impossible. Try living in Lincoln, Kansas and buying a bill of groceries without a car. Or even leaving the house, for that matter. Trains of all kinds, buses and the rest are fine if they're around, but they are often not. "Foot" or "bike" are my top choices here, but those are both luxuries afforded only people who live in cities, and fairly dense ones.

Black bread and Victory gin AGAIN? (kenan), Thursday, 6 August 2009 03:57 (sixteen years ago)

Really there are only two cities in the US where it's practical to do all your basic errands on foot, and I'm happy and proud to live in one of them.

buses, b/c of: not knowing if yours came early & you have to wait until the next one (in which case you might consider walking to a different bus route or taking a cab), or if it is running a bit late & you should stay put.

This esp. applies in the winter & double esp. applies if you happen to live in Dublin.

unban dictionary (blueski), Thursday, 6 August 2009 08:12 (sixteen years ago)

I've had some character-building moments on coaches; freezing, sweating, numb legs, unbelievable back and neck ache, babies screaming, 2 1/2 hour long mobile phone gossip/guffaw sessions, full bladder, rank smells... really the most generous mode of transport. Sense of victory at successfully passing out for the whole trip is unbeatable.

Can't believe I missed out driving over unpaved roads through mountains with no suspension, a really memorable experience.

ogmor, Thursday, 6 August 2009 08:25 (sixteen years ago)

In theory planes are awesome and the actual flying experience I have very little problem with, as long as I can get an aisle seat. BUt jesus fuck why does a journey encompassing a flight time of fifty minutes from Gatwick to Edinburgh, require that I get up at 3am in order to be where I need to at 9.30am?

Voting underground train for the transportation but fuck a flying for the overall experience.

#/.'#/'@ilikecats (g-kit), Thursday, 6 August 2009 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

Planes are crap. (London) Underground is fine, if you only use it once or twice a year. Worse journeys I've ever had, by far, were by coach OR van - van/lorry should have been included.

Aw naw, no' Annoni oan noo an' aw (Tom D.), Thursday, 6 August 2009 11:14 (sixteen years ago)

Hate planes, they are easily the worst experience I ever subject myself to and I always avoid them where there's an alternative. Also despise coaches, way more than buses. I think it's the high seats, they make me feel all cooped up (again, like a plane). Plus they smell funny. Yeah, coaches get my vote.

In sum, journeys via out-of-town airports with no rail link = hell on earth for me.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 6 August 2009 11:14 (sixteen years ago)

Plus they smell funny.

They do. Travelling in a confined space alongside a chemical toilet = weird and unpleasant.

Aw naw, no' Annoni oan noo an' aw (Tom D.), Thursday, 6 August 2009 11:17 (sixteen years ago)

I voted plane. Coach is really the worst for the journey since it's just a smaller less comfortable plane without movies or food - but all the hassle and time wasted in airports weighs heavily on the scales.

ledge, Thursday, 6 August 2009 11:17 (sixteen years ago)

apologies for the lack of van/lorry options: not being particularly au fait with them myself, i did not stop to think whether they presented a sufficiently dissimilar transportation experience to the car to justify their own category. this was an oversight on my part.

thomp, Thursday, 6 August 2009 11:34 (sixteen years ago)

Like a commercial van or truck? It is a bit different than riding in/driving a car, especially longer distances. It's less physically comfortable, for one thing. When I did it, it had this "life during wartime" appeal for me, but I can see how it could be unpleasant for others.

^^ with ya on that. I think my preference for cars, is based on the claustrophia thing which is accented when I feel like I have no control over my environment.

i always get really psyched to fly and be in airports (unless there's a delay) but then once i actually get on a plane i'm like "wait, this kind of sucks"

Metropolitan bus is the only form of transportation that I've accidentally sat in a puddle of someone else's piss on, is why.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 13 August 2009 11:34 (sixteen years ago)

Less likely to happen on any other form of transport, i think.

Maybe subways.

Thomp, I just get the feeling that most people voting for 'bus' were voting for Greyhound-style long-coach-trip experiences. As opposed to the gaiety of a municipal jaunt (which I can get behind to an extent)

When I voted for 'bus' it was for the kind that do municipal jaunts. All the coaches I've been on have been fine (although should probably say I've never had the Greyhound experience and never been on a coach for more than 4 or so hours max at a time).

Local buses are just the pits.

I think local buses are great! But I've said that before. Anything -- ANYTHING -- is better than walking.

man, i love walking. when i was a kid i had this fantasy that when i was, oh, 20 or so i would walk across the country. just start somewhere, walk until i got tired, stay there, and then keep going the next morning until i got to the other end. it still sounds heavenly, but on a less continental scale. i would love to do the lyke wake walk! (it's probably for old people, but it still sounds dreamy)

I love walking, but not so much as a mode of transportation.
