Bull Terriers are Spot the Budweiser Dog dogs.

Dalmatians are the perfect size and are dumb as hell like any good dog should be. But I just can't deal with the spots. Too decorative. So, seeing as how Greyhounds and six-toed Norwegian Lundehunds have been left off the list I'm going with German Shephard (Dog).

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

American Cocker Spaniels are pretty awesome too though.

nate woolls, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)

If I ever got a dog, I think it would have to be a mutt. From what I gather, breeds always seem to have some weird health problems.

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:35 (sixteen years ago)

my girlfriend's beagle mix (suspect there may be some corgi in there as well) can be a little high strung, but overall a v awesome dog imo.

my favorite dog (Marty!) I had growing up was a 1/2 cocker, 1/2 chow. he was really smart and well-tempered, which an adult neighbor who seemed to know a lot about dogs thought was strange. according to this dude cocker spaniels supposedly aren't the brightest and chows can be real dicks. <-- i have no idea if any of this is true tho

No Australian Sheepdog, no cred. Not to mention the uncommon but excellent Icelandic Sheepdog, a pup of which we almost bought last week, until I hardened my heart. Our dog is indifferent to other dogs, and even thought I WANT WANT WANT one of these dogs, purebred puppies will always find a home—I'd rather get a rescue dog.

Akitas are gorgeous.

ENBB, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

Akitas scare me! We had a neighbor with a vicious one.
Breeding for extreme body forms is so wrong. The flattened faces that give the dog respiratory trouble, the massive size that brings bad hips.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:41 (sixteen years ago)

i guess of the ones listed i have particular affection for westies and dachshunds

lex pretend, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

Ditto re: Chihuahuas. Nasty.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:42 (sixteen years ago)

re: purebreeds and health problems - this doesnt have to be the case, but it takes a concerted effort among good breeders to breed for useful stuff like temperment and longevity. the problem comes in when markings and coloring trump all other aspects of the dog, or when people breed dogs to be unnaturally large (or small). Henry is a case in point - puppy mill bernese usually only live for 6 years and are super susceptible to joint problems and liver cancer (!), but the dogs in his bloodline all lived for an average of 12 years. so breeding is not a bad thing (actually can be beneficial) but it has to be done right and often it isn't.

sorry, didnt mean to derail

Westies and Cairns are sweet. Same dog, really—Westies are just white Cairns.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:43 (sixteen years ago)

It's between Labrador Retriever, Siberian Husky, and Border Collie for me. I'll go with Border Collie since I have one and he is an endless source of amusement and fun, the only thing that counts against them is that they are neurotic fuckers. Huskies are great because you're practically walking down the street with a wolf which is pretty cool.

Westies might be slightly more inbred because they're descended from a few white pups in one litter of Cairns. However, the ones I've known have been solid little guys.

Weimaraners tend to be basket cases. Thanks a lot Wm Wegman, for causing people to buy a dog that's def. not a starter model, much as 101 Dalmations did for that biting breed.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

i've known a few ill-tempered Chihauhuas, but in a really charming way.
i love how they totally think they are a big dog, even when they are surrounded by much bigger ones. best seen on the steets of mexico.

mizzell, Thursday, 6 August 2009 15:59 (sixteen years ago)

I've never actually seen a Staffordshire Bull Terrier so although Pits are probably my favorite breed of dog and this is the closest thing on here I feel like I would be remiss somehow in voting for them. Second favorite dog is probably Ridgebacks also not on here. And third favorite is Australian Cattle Dog also not on here. So I'm going to vote for Labs even though a lot of them are over-bred freaks (like most of the rest of the dogs on this list.)

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 August 2009 16:07 (sixteen years ago)

Beth Parker, Thursday, 6 August 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

I had to vote Corgi. I love the herding breeds for their smarts and loyalty, but German Sheps are too aggressive, BC's too crazy. Shelties were my second choice. The ones I've met are sweeties, though I've read that they can be very neurotic.

German Shepherd (dog) is everything a dog (dog) should be: substantially larger than a cat, smart, loyal, trainable, unrelenting when performing a task, nice coat, and very handsome. They're played out and taken for granted at this point, but whenever I see one up close in person I'm basically in awe. Plus they're the only way I ever befriend cops. Just last week there was a cop brushing his K9 partner in the parking lot of the school across the street from my house, and I wanted to get arrested just so I could spend some more time with "Howie".

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 6 August 2009 16:25 (sixteen years ago)

For massive breeds, I love the Leonberger, which is a blend of Great Pyrenees, St. Bernard, and Newfie, but with a tapered muzzle, hence no drooling.

Still, the hips.

Enormous dogs can actually be really good small apartment dogs cuz they are so monumentally lazy.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 August 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

I knew someone with an efficiency who had a Neapolitan Mastiff and they did fine together.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 August 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

Well I mean other than the copious amounts of drool, but that's just something you are going to have to live with no matter the size of your apartment.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 August 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)

That does sound like a perfect blend. I'd only own a dog if I had a big house and lots of land, so they're like grandkids to me: go over to someone else's house and get to play with them, but they have to deal with all the rest of the not-so-fun parts of having a dog.

xxxps

Rough Collies and assorted sled breeds 4eva! Oh god the shedding, though....

This list coming from the UK, of course doesn't include collies, except of the "Border" variety. The rough collie (Lassie, if you like) is apparently an American thing...which is weird, because they're so much portrayed here as being Scottish.

The only whippets I've known were very cute to look at but incredibly nervous (possibly because they were rescue dogs); as a result, it was really unsettling to be around them because at any given moment, anything you did could set one or both of them off in a trembling, floor-wetting fit.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

^ so I really love these guys for their temperament and beauty and faces and general sense of having stepped out of an oil painting, and I might even live with one right now except: do you know what one of their genetic problems is? their brains can be too big for their heads! and all this pressure builds up and stuff squeezes down around the connection to the spinal cord, and they can wind up with such constant unfixable neurological brain pain that all you can do is put them down. it's not super-common, or anything, but boy howdy does that sound like a sucky thing to have to watch out for with your dog, and now every time I meet a cavalier with a smaller-than-usual head I get vaguely worried about it.

nabisco, Thursday, 6 August 2009 17:43 (sixteen years ago)

Dobies can have that skull-too-small headache problem, too.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 6 August 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

wow, according to wikipedia 90% of cavaliers have the skull malformation that can cause the problem, it just doesn't become an issue with most of them. the scary thing, though, is that they might not even exhibit pain about it, and just gradually start showing spine issues or even paralysis.

this sucks major ass because those dogs are great. this is one of those instances where I'd appreciate some breeders mutting them up a bit with some fresh genes, so one day I could maybe have a mostly-CKC dog without worrying about its brain squeezing out the back of its skull.

"I grew up with them and none of the pugs I ever had were plagued by any of the health problems ppl so often seem to think they have."

Then your pugs were lucky. People aren't making up the health problems that pugs, bulldogs, et all, have.

xp Fantastically cute.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 August 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

Doesn't help that one of the only pugs I've known personally has/had some kind of irritation to her nose the last few times I saw her, and it gets/got so bad that the tissue started turning green and sloughing off. They had some kind of ointment for her but she hated it and kept rubbing her nose...ugh.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Thursday, 6 August 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

I honestly don't dislike any actual dogs/breeds, but I will say that I don't really respond to the whole "aww look it's like a funny ugly little monster" variety of cuteness that some people love w/r/t, say, pugs, Brussels gryphons, the more jacked-up types of Chinese cresteds,* etc. It is apparently not for me. This is usually less of a visual issue with pugs and more an issue of people who find it cute/amusing when they're being all frantic and snorty and food-crazed and bulgy-faced and little-monstrous.

I love tiny, odd looking dogs the most - corgis, pugs, boston terriers, french bulldogs, etc. But I'll take temperament of an individual over breed obviously. I've met all kinds of dogs recently and there are crazy and really mellow individuals of all kinds.

Not really a huge chihuahua fan but we've got a chihuahua mutt that's pretty great. Not yappy or annoying (yet, at least, she's only a puppy) and we're hopefully going to keep it that way. She's also got a Dracula widow's peak now:

I voted for German Shepherd, since the only dog with whom I've ever had a close friendship was a shepherd (RIP). They are so lovely, and have A+ comedy value in mid-puppyhood before they grow into their paws & ears.

German Shepherds are awesome, but the health problems from breeding (in US dogs) is ridiculous.

Oh so, so true. I think the urge some people have to wind dogs up until they're so over-excited they're practically puking is pathological and cruel.

xxp ^^ I know, and it's heartbreaking. My particular buddy was certified DYSPLASIA-FREE from the breeder, and had confirmed dysplasia within a couple of years.

I am not very knowledgable about dogs in general, but my understanding is that most large purebreeds have health problems, right?

franny glass, Thursday, 6 August 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

If I start breeding now, maybe I can have an awesome Havanese / CKC Spaniel / Beagle / Papillon to keep me company when I'm middle-aged.

nabisco, Thursday, 6 August 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah; most pure breeds in general, of any species, have more health problems than crossbreeds - it's why we don't allow incest amongst humans, pretty much.

re: Brussels gryphons, maybe it's just my neighborhood, but I think the whole "my small dog isn't a cutesy purse dog, it's a beardy little rat-like funny monster" aspect is particularly pronounced, and seems to go hand in hand with "if my dog is completely untrained and annoying and weird it's funny," which is really not true and a bit annoying. I mean it's funnier than if a mastiff were running around being crazy and annoying, but still, not fun.

note: I only first met a Chinese crested with all its hair grown out a couple weeks back -- it makes a big difference in how you might perceive them! this woman told me it was a crested and for a minute I thought she was tripping.

jjj no one is attacking you for doing that i just personally wouldn't spend a lot of money on it if there are dogs waiting for owners, and i don't really care for purebreds/purebreeding. i mean it would be just as good to me if they carefully and responsibly bred mutts. i just like dogs in general!

permanent response lopp (harbl), Thursday, 6 August 2009 19:28 (sixteen years ago)

jjusten OTM, mutts being healthier is apparently untrue, it's just harder to assess their health without knowing more about make-up. Being the product of a lab and a German shepherd doesn't mean a puppy misses out on hip dysplasia and arthritis, it just means there's a chance either (or both) could have been passed on to him.

There are people carefully breeding dogs that have been warped by puppy mills or kennel club standards (like the Olde English Bulldogge mentioned before - breeding English bulldogs with healthier breeds) and if done correctly that has to be a good thing IMO.

Shelter dogs are awesome too, of course. Childhood dog Bear was a lab/chow mix who lived forever and was freakishly loyal because he had been rescued from an abusive home.

ice cr?m paint job (milo z), Thursday, 6 August 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

oh no i dont feel attacked, i just think a lot of the time crappy breeders get equated to general breeding standards, which is wrong. its also why you can buy the same dog for a third of the price much of the time, but it will prob not work out well for you.

I know I've said this before -- and I realize why this is, like, not structurally feasible -- but it'd be wonderful to see careful breeding not for any particular standard but just to get healthy bloodlines that are predictable and tailored to stuff people actually need in dogs (good health, temperament, intelligence, sociability, etc.). It's like the most basic sensible thing in the world, and yet not that structurally possible.

(fwiw my dog is from a small breeder and is awesome and healthy. but he's young. I think his worst problem is mild luxating patellas, which I have only seen bother him maybe once or twice.)

Hey, getting fed a couple of times a day, having a loving owner who comes home straight from work to walk you, and takes you to the park on the weekends when he or she is NOT at his or her day-job is a hell of a lot better than being in a shelter, a pound, or on the street.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Thursday, 6 August 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

I don't think it's an awesome IDEA, and the fact that my roommate sometimes doesn't come home til like 10pm seems, to me, to be more evidence for the fact that she got a dog b/c of how it makes her feel about HERSELF, not for the dog's benefit. But still. If you have a dog that seems to adapt ok to being home all day, and you can rescue them from something worse, I don't see any reason not to go for it.

Like most people my age, I am 33 (Laurel), Thursday, 6 August 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

yeah see I can understand having a dog as a full-time worker, if you know you're going to be home and energetic the rest of the time, and especially if you can have a walker come take the dog to a park or something for half an hour while you're gone -- the problem is, what are you going to do, take a month off when you get the dog to train and socialize it? that would be the rough thing, I think.

nabisco, Thursday, 6 August 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, that is definitely part of the problem.

ENBB, Thursday, 6 August 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)

I once had a co-worker who got a new puppy and had exactly that problem -- she seemed to not get why it was such a nightmare leaving the dog home all day, and of course the answer was that it wasn't a grown dog, it hadn't been trained and made comfortable and taught how to work with that schedule.

nabisco, Thursday, 6 August 2009 20:00 (sixteen years ago)

tbf the rin tin tins and lassies and beethovens of the world are prob far more detrimental

xxxpost yeah right now i am blinded by how much (awesome dont get me wrong) time and work is involved in training a puppy, even a smart one. add in socializing them with kids/people/other animals and yer free time is pretty much gone.

Results 1 - 1 of 1 for vedderizer. (0.05 seconds) ;_; (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 August 2009 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

^^^ yah thats the big thing. i trained our dog when i was a kid and its real work housebreaking it, taking it to obedience classes, generally dealing with puppiness. any breed id conisder, once its like two itd probably be cool w/chilling in a nice cool apt with a couple of walks and an evening run but puppies i think need more attention than that? idk thats my impression. (xpost)

also the other big sticking point is that i travel pretty frequently

stayin golder than ponyboy (Lamp), Thursday, 6 August 2009 20:01 (sixteen years ago)

I have a shi-tzu/labrador mix who I took in after a friend came to the conclusion she couldnt take care of her any more. Bizarre combo. She's 30 lbs. and apparently full grown. The guy up above who thinks that only big dogs are lazy is wrong, this one definitely enjoys lounging. Great dog though.

Bill Magill, Thursday, 6 August 2009 20:12 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't say that only big dogs are lazy, just that big dogs tend to be lazy and therefore don't need as much room as you might think. My dog weighs about 40 lbs and she's a complete lump at home.

what are you going to do, take a month off when you get the dog to train and socialize it?

That's what my wife did - actually she's on a 9 month university schedule so we timed dog ownership with her summer break. She didn't teach the first session of summer classes so basically was around all day while we were getting the dog figured out. By the time second session rolled around we could crate the dog and deal with her enough that we could be gone for big parts of the day.

Training a puppy is awesome but holy crap is it a lot of time and energy - no lounging on the couch and watching movies, random weekend trips, or spontaneous gatherings at friends houses this summer because the dog will still wreck shit if left alone not in her crate, and we don't want to crate her more than we already do.

joygoat, Thursday, 6 August 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

xxxp I don't buy that for a second. Puppies are more than all but the most troubled older dogs. Getting a dog from a shelter/foster situation (assuming it's been housebroken, of course, and is moderately trainable) is a million times easier than dealing with an eleven week old puppy.

Beth Parker, Thursday, 6 August 2009 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

My family has an awesome dachshund...I think part of the stuff w/small breeds is people let them pull shit off that they don't let older dogs do. ie most people train big dogs not to jump on people bcz it cld hurt them, but make no similar provision for small dogs. I am dog sitting the mom-in-laws 2 pitbulls at our house this week. One is half great dane and she lets him do whatever he fucking likes (the other is 14 & thus doesn't have the energy to be ill-behaved). If he jumps on you & tackles you & starts licking your face, she says, "Oh be nice, he's just trying to show you his LOVE!" I guess he's not only used top sleeping ON the bed, but on TOP of her. It's a real bitch getting him off the bed but after 2 days he figured out, mostly, that he isn't allowed up there. Same w/the couch. Same w/tackling you the moment you enter the house. We haven't let him pull of a single goddamn thing (except you can't really get him to stop barking). I'm not sure if, when she resturns Saturday, she'll be happy or upset by this. He'll probably just revert back to how he acts around her.

i voted for boston terrier cuz i think they are sweet and cute. and i lived with one once and i really liked him. i'm not a dog person, but i enjoyed taking care of that little guy. the second most favorite dog i ever knew was this massive neapolitan mastiff named caesar. one of the sweetest animals i ever had the pleasure to know.

scott seward, Friday, 7 August 2009 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

I'm allergic and have never had a dog so the likelihood that I'll ever own a breed OTHER THAN a poodle is pretty remote. (I have heard about schnausers and some sort of sheep dog as well, but I don't want to take the risk.) I have never really spent any time with a purebred poodle so it'll be interesting.

I'm looking at a poodle breeder website and it says "delivery available." Awww. I am having a hard time not clicking on this right now. "One medium brown, please."

Nabisco - As a cavalier owner, I have to say we had no idea that the breed had so many neurological problems. We bought from a very reputable breeder and hope that this won't be the case with our little man. He's a wonderful dog with a great temperament.

Ledge - the inability of loveable animals to be friends with each other is one of life's mysteries.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 7 August 2009 13:56 (sixteen years ago)

A friend of mine was involved with some animal rights activists in Germany. They broke into a lab to free the animals, and while they were loading them up into a van in the alley the lab dogs slaughtered one of the lab sheep, and the activists were totally appalled.

What did they expect? All the animals should embrace as brothers in the new Peaceable Kingdom they had wrought? Duh.

Based on cuteness alone, I would also go for the Laikas, but then I read this: "Barking.+> Some hunters report that the Karelo-Finnish Laika is less barky than the Finnish Spitz. Nevertheless, it is the most excitable Russian Laika and barks by any slight reason."

They look like cousins of Icelandic Shepherds, another Spitz breed.

I saw a french bulldog puppy being taken out for a walk today who had both back legs broken. He was walking along mostly on his front legs with his tiny casted back legs sometimes bouncing on the ground to help out a little bit, all while making an extremely determined looking french bulldog face. It was the most awesome heartbreaking thing ever.

yeah, he came from the pound, about 1 year old, we have no idea about his previous owners but he's the sweetest dog we've ever had. Wish I saw him more than a few times per year.

Um. Yes? Cuteness is for puppies and other baby things.

xp Bichons are the only real exception to my feelings about small dogs. They have a sturdiness (or at least enough fur to pretend to one) that other little dogs lack. The only adult Bichon I've known, though, was HORRIBLE because he'd been taught to be. Very sad.

I had a Tibetan terrier (very similar dog) in high school and she was great! Not a foo-foo yip-yip dog, they have a big dog personality & smarts in a fluffball body.

SCOTTISH PEOPLE ONLY (I M Losted), Friday, 16 January 2015 14:44 (ten years ago)

Tash is my second experience with a Lhasa Apso, the first was Finn, a couple of months ago. Tash is a puppy, Finn is a grumpy old man. Finn didnt like it when Tash arrived at his house, but when Finn was brought to Tash's house he was more ok with it. I felt comfortable with Finn a few months, and so i was ready for Tash.

I picked up Tash and rubbed her tummy

do any of y'all have a border collie or B.C. mix?

he quipped with heat (amateurist), Wednesday, 10 June 2015 23:18 (ten years ago)

I've never had one personally but I've spent a lot of time around them...? They are my aunt's dog of preference. They're really pretty and can be really smart, although one of her current ones is a bit dim and the other one is a bit weird. I was staying with my aunt last year for a few weeks and the dim dog barked insanely at me or my brother or other half every time she saw us in the house and didn't get used to our presence until a couple days before I left. The weird dog constantly stalks their cat, always with a chew toy in its mouth -- I guess so it already has something to chew on and isn't tempted to chomp the cat? Not that it could catch it, the cat appears to be smarter than the dogs.

My aunt and her husband both work daytime office jobs and travel a lot so the dogs spend a lot of time at dog daycare. Probably not the best breed of dog for that lifestyle, let alone two of them.

salsa shark, Thursday, 11 June 2015 07:02 (ten years ago)
