This used to be Jennifer Connelly, but Zooey Deschanel seems to have captured the title.
I bet these actresses are undervalued in that they will draw more audience per salary $ than your average 'bond girl' or any conventional sexy lady.
(I think Ebert has a thing for Rosario Dawson, but this might be animal rather than he wants to marry her)

I don't have one of these, I don't think. BUT I would like to mention that I watched like 30 minutes of a movie called One-Eyed Monster because it starred Amber Benson from Buffy. It was about a snowbound porn set on which some kind of alien takes over Ron Jeremy's penis, and then the penis goes around killing everyone. At some point there was dialogue roughly as follows:
MAN: If we stay here we'll be sitting ducks for that thing.WOMAN: It's not a thing.MAN: Ron Jeremy was a great guy. I know you dug on him. But he's dead now. And that may be his dick out there, but it's a mass murderer.

Hence why they fit here, and perhaps why no one's mentioned obvious contenders like Juliette Binoche or Helena Bonham Carter: they manage not to be cast in dreck without other redeeming qualities. Kristen Scott Thomas, with the exception of that Prince vehicle, probably doesn't belong in this thread either.
Few of the actresses here are chameleons of a Meryl Streep nature (and arguably, that's not an adorable type that audiences can fall in love with). These all are cast because they drag their own affectations, history, and sparks into the fray. Dying Polley in Life Without Me wouldn't be as affecting had we not watched her evolve in Munchausen and Exotica. Parker is just cast as prickly characters. It works for her. Can you imagine Hepburn cast as an ingenue? Me neither.
― Derelict, Saturday, 8 August 2009 02:07 (sixteen years ago)
Binoche has been in plenty of mediocre films, and HB Carter has been in some true dogs. Sadly Helena's track record is so spotty that I won't watch movies just for her anymore.

I can't think of any. I don't really watch movies tbh.

Audrey Hepburn, Karen Black, Lili Taylor.
And I've had a crush on Jodie Foster since I was 9. (Never considered killing the Prime Minister tho)

After her 30 Rock appearance, I've been very taken with the re-emergence of Anna Chlumsky. Anyone making this face:

...in a paparazzi picture is a keeper.

Cecile de France, seconded. I was forgetting about french actresses. I'd like to add Virginie Ledoyen and Ludivine Sagnier.

Pretty sure I would not have seen Disturbing Behavior, The Gift, or Abandon if not for Katie Holmes, though she's a pretty terrible actress.
― jaymc, Saturday, 8 August 2009 20:47 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i saw the gift more or less entirely for katie holmes and her two friends

Can't figure out why she's not cast in everything. So hot. Also, she named her son "Audio Science" with gets about 1B bonus points.

Even cooler, wikipedia says she was in two Mr. Show episodes and a Daft Punk video.

You mean the two magnificent parts of herself in the faded glow of night's light?
― jaymc, Saturday, 8 August 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, I love her too. I watched 40 days and 40 nights because of her for christ's sake. Her character's name in that was Erica iirc. :-)

Kissed is kind of a bittersweet, thoughtful feminist take on Jörg Buttgereit's 'Nekromantic 2', pretty good one in the 'falling for a girl with some issues that she doesn't really see as issues' category (even thought the film's from her point of view), I remember liking it and occasionally having to remind myself that it really exists
