PARKOUR PARKOUR

Mordy, Friday, 18 September 2009 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

(I actually still love it, btw)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 September 2009 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

Me too :)

Mordy, Friday, 18 September 2009 01:03 (fifteen years ago)

Wow, this is the most "acting" Stanley's done in the show's whole run.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 September 2009 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

Another man inside of Kevin working him with controls!! I lol'd.

Mordy, Friday, 18 September 2009 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

That new Jason Schwartzman HBO show looks amazing!

Shut up. I don't have hbo.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 September 2009 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

Andy's gay dilemma was probably the best part of this.

Yeah, tonight's shows

It's Always Sunny > Parks & Recreation > The Office > Community (but I liked them all, actually)

PARKOUR was greattttt

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 01:08 (fifteen years ago)

That was absolutely one of the worst Office episodes ever. Just AWFUL.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 25 September 2009 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

Didn't see that post coming. No way.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 25 September 2009 02:02 (fifteen years ago)

xxp that was a great underplayed line

cheese cart thing was awful but mercifully short, the rest of was boilerplate (amusing enough) Office stuff. also typical: using an entire episode just to set up this whole Jim co-manager situation

Nhex, Friday, 25 September 2009 02:40 (fifteen years ago)

this episode should've ended with creed bratton bashing jim and pam to death with michael's cheese cart

iiiijjjj, Friday, 25 September 2009 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

WTF. Our DVR just up and decided not to record this tonight, so not happy. Recorded Parks and Rec and Community, but not The Office. I don't get it.

Ugh seriously? I have to wait 24 hours for this to show up on NBC.com or Hulu? Come on internet, you are failing me here.

Maybe, I thought it was 24 hours. Either way, doesn't matter, I won't be able to watch it until after I sit through 8 hours at work with people quoting the punchlines all day and completely ruining my enjoyment of the episode.

iatee, Friday, 25 September 2009 08:01 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't hate it over all, but my favorite parts were the opening bit with Oscar and the Dwight/Toby/Darryl subplot.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 08:16 (fifteen years ago)

I thought it was fine. I don't really watch The Office as anything more than an enjoyable sitcom, though, these days. I don't expect it to be the apex of greatness, so I'm occasionally pleasantly surprised.

It drives me crazy that Michael's being so bitchy about this, because he brought it all upon himself and he 100% knows it.

Pam and Ryan at the end = my favorite scene so far this season.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 2 October 2009 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

i liked how it was dragged out just enough to make her sudden caving in more of a laugh

Nhex, Friday, 2 October 2009 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

I'm trying to wrap my head around the new physical layout of the office since they bumped the accountants somewhere else to accommodate Jim's new office. I'm weird like that. I was at least hoping for a meta joke of "hey, where'd that come from" or something. But in all honesty, I think the ramp is being set up for the shark jumping on this show. The co-manager thing just sets up all sorts of things that won't end up cleanly and the wistful nostalgia commercials for the "very special" wedding episode are bad bad signs in my book.

Extended shark metaphors used in reference to television shows are a sign of profound idiocy.

Three Word Username, Friday, 2 October 2009 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

The notion that promos for future episodes are indicators of creative direction seems flawed to me. I kind of doubt the people behind the show have any role in making those promos.

It's so sad to think the Office might not be a good show forever. I don't think I got any huge laughs out of either of the episodes this season, usually there's one or two, but it's still not bad!

Maria, Friday, 2 October 2009 13:23 (fifteen years ago)

last night's episode was totally great--the co-manager thing adds another layer of complexity and ridiculousness

I'm trying to wrap my head around the new physical layout of the office since they bumped the accountants somewhere else to accommodate Jim's new office.

I just checked that scene and they seem to be in the same place?

musically, Saturday, 3 October 2009 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

We actually had a big debate about the physical layout at Dunder-Mifflin at work yesterday (lol architects) and ended up finding this on Google. It's a bit outdated, but seems to make some sense. Jim's office is down in the corner that shows Creed's and Derrin's desks on this plan.

Nice end.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 9 October 2009 01:58 (fifteen years ago)

Also, totally called the Michael/Pam's mom thing at least a half hour ago.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 9 October 2009 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

Whole episode was pretty classic I'd say

Michael F Gill, Friday, 9 October 2009 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

The first 50 minutes was the best episode since season 3. But the ending was terrible (cheezy), except for dwight kicking the bridesmaid bit. Otherwise solid lols throughout.

Mister Jim, Friday, 9 October 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

The Chris Brown thing was totally cheesy, but as mentioned above, also totally in line with the characters of the show. I think it could have been a disaster, but they pulled it off.

A+++++ episode for Kevin btw

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 9 October 2009 02:44 (fifteen years ago)

too bad they have to keep lining Chris's pockets...they could've picked a less abusive artist and we'd still get the reference.

dan selzer, Friday, 9 October 2009 03:25 (fifteen years ago)

Great episode and all, but am I the only one that noticed that the woman that plays the part of Pam's grandma is THE EXACT SAME PERSON that played Michael's grandmother in the Michael Scott Paper Company episode? Lame.

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 9 October 2009 03:43 (fifteen years ago)

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 9 October 2009 04:39 (fifteen years ago)

I never noticed that about the grandmother, but now that I know, I think that is pretty funny. Barney Miller used to do that stuff all the time, including a couple of people that became regulars on the show later on.

Arrested Development did it the other way where the soap opera girlfriend was a different actress each time.

iatee, Friday, 9 October 2009 04:59 (fifteen years ago)

Oscar & Kevin vogue-ing ruled very much. Also I had two weddings -- one legal and one in a church -- and it does very much make a huge difference in your ability to have fun and laugh off ridiculousness on the bigger day. /terrifying TWOP housewife.

This was a fantastic episode, actually. Every time Dwight is portrayed as the King of Sex = big laughs.

^^^^OTM. I'm hoping they have some sort of fatal accident during their honeymoon.

lindseykai, Saturday, 10 October 2009 01:26 (fifteen years ago)

This was a pretty sweet episode, funny and sweet and up there with the best of them. Hah, "Silvio". I had no idea about the whole dance thing at the end (thanks, Pam, for telling me what it was) and it seemed like an easy out. Like woah we are in a cell phone commercial or something.

Then again I guess they figured more than any other episode this is one the office worker demographic would be watching so the youtube thing would have huge wink-wink potential across that audience.

Adam Bruneau, Saturday, 10 October 2009 01:51 (fifteen years ago)

Do people not like the original youtube wedding thing? I thought it was pretty great. As was this episode. Mrs T was in tears.

knick knack auf zack (Ned Trifle II), Saturday, 10 October 2009 12:30 (fifteen years ago)

I hated the YouTube video at first, but it kinda grew on me when I decided to stop being such a fun-hater. I thought it worked really well for The Office, because most of those characters would totally be all up on loving something like that. However, if I ever attend a real life wedding where they break that out, I will not hesitate to punch someone in the face.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Saturday, 10 October 2009 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

My only problem w/the youtube video is Chris Brown. That douche does not deserve any royalties.

Maria, Saturday, 10 October 2009 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

Thought the writers did a really nice job of having it both ways on the video -- it WAS in fact a completely tasteless, embarrassing thing to do, but Jim & Pam didn't care because they'd had their perfect secret wedding.

Also Chris Brown is the first musician in the history of recorded music ever to commit domestic violence. (i.e. do you morons live in CAVES????)

Mister Jim, Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:28 (fifteen years ago)

it is a weird and stupid situation but I look forward to seeing the writers try to work their way out of it. unless it ends retardedly.

fwiw most of at-the-time-weird business mix-ups (jan losing job, ryan, the office mergers) have all led to lots of classic moments in the show...

iatee, Sunday, 11 October 2009 06:34 (fifteen years ago)

no way the jim co-manager thing is going to last beyond this season - it feels so obviously a sitcom illusion of change deal to wring some plots out of. i'd be surprised if it even goes into 2010

i'll still.. kind of be amused by these episodes, while saying to myself over and over again "why am i still watching this show" when half my friends dropped this show a year or so ago

but i guess it was inevitable, since the wedding episode was pretty decent, take the good w/the totally over-the-top. then watch 30 Rock which just accepts being completely unrealistic and insane and enjoy it instead

this was really a bizarrely unfunny episode btw. Are we supposed to find it hilarious that Pam was being such an awful person?

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 25 October 2009 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

also, weren't pam and michael supposed to be getting closer lately?

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 25 October 2009 22:50 (fifteen years ago)

I thought it was because Pam and Michael were getting closer that she was able to act out to the extent she did. She no longer feels any compunction about "taking him on" because of that shared history. It felt very natural to me.

I liked this last episode a lot. Jim is (slowly, cringingly) turning into Michael, which feels a lot more realistic than him remaining charming and above it all. In early seasons he kept saying he didn't want Dunder-Mifflin to be his career, but now both he and Pam have staked their financial future on the company and it's kind of warping in them in obvious and unlikable ways.

After a terrible season 5, and a rocky beginning to season 6, I feel like the show is starting to get back on track. I still think the co-manager thing is a terrible contrivance. I also feel like this is a show that desperately needs a periodic infusion of new blood (think Ed Helms, Rashida Jones, Amy Ryan), but so far Erin is being somewhat underutilized in that respect. But anyway this was like three good episodes in a row, and am feeling more optimistic about this show than I have in a long time.

where was the restaurant in tonight's episode? there was a pink wall outside with an ATM.

Sorry I didn't respond to this sooner but I'm just catching up with the last two or three episodes.

I couldn't tell where they filmed that restaurant scene but, if I were to guess, I'd say Granada Hills (unless they went really South from their studio, in which case it could be anywhere)

I watched Parks and Recreations for the first time last night and the cheap motel where two characters go for some, er, quality time, is located by San Fernando Road and Alameda in Burbank/Glendale. That one was easy for me.

On the Office, I couldn't place the restaurant but the road where Michael, Pam, Jim and Pam's mom are driving down while they engage in car talk was Chandler Blvd in Van Nuys. You can tell because of the mansions, trees, one-way street etc. There aren't many places near the Van Nuys area that have a long, rich suburbia road, among other things.

Nhex, Friday, 6 November 2009 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

Was there ever a point where this wasn't true?

Of course. I've been watching old episodes recently, and in Seasons 1 and 2, Ryan's main purpose is as a normal, unassuming foil for all the wacky characters whose lives seemingly revolve around the office.

For instance, from Season 2, Episode 4:
Ryan: I don't want to be like, a guy here. You know? Like, Stanley is the "crossword puzzle guy". And Angela has cats. I don't want to have a thing... here. You know, I don't want to be the "something" guy.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Friday, 6 November 2009 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

In one of the recent episodes, I think the only thing Ryan did was appear on screen for three seconds holding a pair of folded-up black hipster glasses. And it conveyed so much.

Jaymc is right. Early in the show Ryan was a fairly normal twenty-something who was "just there" but over the seasons they've changed him around a great deal. BJ Novak, Mindy Kaling, and Paul whatshisface (Toby) may have started out as writers/producers for the show who were supposed to just be background filler in the office but they've evolved the characters since and, for better or worse, made them wackier.

Cunga, Saturday, 7 November 2009 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

Toby coaching Pam on how to punch Michael was pretty great.

joygoat, Saturday, 7 November 2009 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

BJ Novak seems a lot more comfortable now that they've got him back doing the season 1 and 2 role, and not having him be a coke head or an egomaniac.

I agree that P&R has really come into its own this season. The last few have been the highlights of the NBC Thursday lineup imo. This probably has just as much to do with the relative underperformance of recent Office & 30R as it does with the quality of the show itself, but still, I'm glad I didn't bail on it (which I almost did).

One of the better episodes of the season because they allowed it to just be silly.

OTM about the show feeling tired. I think the show is capable of greatness still (some funny eps this season) but the jokes don't hang nearly as well now that the show lacks any sort of dramatic tension.

There's also the sort of complacency that comes from all the actors and writers on the show either being stars or in the process of becoming rich and famous. When the show was new and you didn't know anybody outside of Steve Carrell and there was that great dynamic of the actors being anonymous and fresh.

No kidding. Also big globs of real heavy tension, particularly btw. Jim and Michael. This was a very fine episode.

Three Word Username, Saturday, 14 November 2009 11:12 (fifteen years ago)

I don't really feel any tension anymore, mostly because there are no attempts to maintain any kind of consistently believable reality anymore. I can't put my finger on why exactly, but it really rankles. Too many instances of people not acting like human beings actually act in this ostensibly documentary format where you're expected to care that dramatic things are happening while Dwight's punching himself in the balls. I think maybe the show is just increasingly not for me.

a. don't have to care about whether Jim and Pam will get together b. Andy Bernard and Erin exist

I never catch this show anymore due to other commitments but whenever I stumble across repeats of recent seasons I am always massively amused. The whole Dwight-Angela-Andy debacle and the 1-2 punch of the Christmas party episode where everyone found out about it except for Andy and the follow on with the Dwight-Andy fight are series high points for me.

(Other high points include: 1st season sensitivity training; Jim, Pam and Dwight eat dinner at Michael and Jan's; Jim & Pam missing each other while she was in design school; the basketball game)

Jim, Pam and Dwight eat dinner at Michael and Jan's

this is maybe the high point of the entire series for me

max, Friday, 20 November 2009 19:17 (fifteen years ago)

That dinner party episode might really be the best of the series. It's got that whole "Who's afraid of virginia woolff" vibe to it.

The most recent episode wasn't great. It seemed more about setting up future plot developments than generating laughs. But it was okay. After the first two episodes, I think this season has been solid enough. But there needs to be some kind of major shake-up to reinvigorate the show, cause it's been stagnating for like three seasons now.

By the way, anyone else find it kind of weird that Bj Novack gets a starring bill in the credits along with Michael, Pam, Dwight, and Jim? I mean, he's never gotten the kind of screen time they get, and in fact he gets less screen time than Andy Bernard. Plus they've kind've ruined the character at this point. I just think it's weird.

Mister Jim, Saturday, 21 November 2009 04:45 (fifteen years ago)

Agreed, they've run through his arc at this point. and there are plenty of other characters they can go with, or introduce new ones. I think he's one of the writers, so doesn't he have enough to do?

Nhex, Saturday, 21 November 2009 04:49 (fifteen years ago)

I think he gets the credit because he's one of the main writers/producers. Probably in his contract.

Glad to see him in the closet and glad to see Jim assert some authority without getting laughed at for once.

Super Cub, Saturday, 21 November 2009 08:22 (fifteen years ago)

I think the reason the dinner party episode is so great is that the discomfort level is through the roof, and that's what made the first few seasons so funny. There are fewer moments that are so uncomfortable they're PAINFUL now. But it's hard to humanize your characters and maintain that level.

Maria, Saturday, 21 November 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

The last two episodes were pretty good. I'm glad they're moving the show forward (the plot of the last episode) and they've devoted little to Pam and Jim's new marriage so far.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 4 December 2009 09:36 (fifteen years ago)

I disagree for two reasons: 1. Dwight's Prop Joe imitation & 2. the writing wasn't that awful, but in the last two seasons, the acting in large ensemble scenes has gotten painfully bad, like high school improv class bad, and that's what messed up the B story for me.

The Michael plot was great! A masterclass of sustained embarrassment. I loved Erin getting into the spirit of it as well. The b-plot was pretty daft, yeah. Some easy but proper laughs from Dwight's impersonations.

Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Friday, 4 December 2009 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

The Michael embarrassment was good, but I feel like there should have been some other consequence for that other than shrug tee-hee. Its like the writers have completely abandoned reality to put Michael in these situations then pull him out of them with absolutely no ramifications. First the shareholders meeting, come on. There would have been some fall out from that somehow. And now this? Not that I should be counting on this to be super realistic, but it just irks me that this season has Michael getting into increasingly ridiculous situations and it just gets shrugged off.

it's not "wtfness" it's awful, dreadful shittyness.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 5 December 2009 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah This episode was pretty terrible. I actually thought the Jim/Dwight plot was more enjoyable and better written than the michael subplot which was a weird out of the blue contrivance. I believe that Dwight could engineer that scheme, and but for a few unnecessary details, execute it. That thing with the college tuition on the other hand just feels like a contrivance the writers have been sitting on for like 3 seasons and finally decided to use only because they couldn't come up with anything else to fill the episode.

The really frustrating thing about this show is that after six seasons of character development, they often have the characters revert to a caricature that no longer feels that true.

Mister Jim, Saturday, 5 December 2009 05:32 (fifteen years ago)

the michael plot was just "there." Yeah not good, really, but not mindwrenchingly awful like the employee of the month thing.

The face cake? Every character buys that?

If the Dwight/Ryan thing ends up with Jim being demoted, the show will have achieved a complete collapse. I kind of hope it happens, because then I can just quit.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 5 December 2009 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

For whatever reason, I could suspend my disbelief on the face cake and all that. I probably just don't really expect too much from this show anymore, except forward motion and a couple of laughs. I thought Dwight writing out his plan and leaving it in the copier was way dumber.

I extremely doubt they're gonna demote jim because he's supposed to be the relateable character and they're not going to have the "villians" prevail. Though I don't see this stupid co-manager situation lasting forever either, so I don't know how they'll resolve it.

I'm sure I've already said this upthread, but there's really no purpose left to ryan's character. Once he became VP, there was no turning back. They should find a way to kill him off. Maybe this dwight alliance will be a way to do that. I doubt it though.

Mister Jim, Saturday, 5 December 2009 06:03 (fifteen years ago)

The new episode still hasn't popped up on EZTV, after everything else that aired Thursday night has been up for at least 24 hours. Is that telling in some way...?

Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 5 December 2009 07:32 (fifteen years ago)

I wanna say that they've written themselves into a corner, but I would be willing to show them the way out if they wanted to shoot me a baller TV writer paycheck or two. Just sayin'.

Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 5 December 2009 07:37 (fifteen years ago)

Agree with above, sooooo bad. Also agree w jon about the continual bailouts they give Michael, how it hurts the show in the long run. But at the same time I like that he stood up in front of the kids and told them the truth, rather than make up a wacky lie or just running away.

The Dwight plot was a little painful to watch unfold.

Adam Bruneau, Saturday, 5 December 2009 15:58 (fifteen years ago)

Jim has made mistakes in the past, but he seemed to turn into a complete idiot this episode

Nhex, Saturday, 5 December 2009 20:06 (fifteen years ago)

this was pretty bad all around. dwight's scheme was sort of funny but the plot as a whole was not good, and the scott's tots things just seemed like nobody was reacting on the right scale of emotion at ALL.

Maria, Saturday, 5 December 2009 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

I disagree for two reasons: 1. Dwight's Prop Joe imitation & 2. the writing wasn't that awful, but in the last two seasons, the acting in large ensemble scenes has gotten painfully bad, like high school improv class bad, and that's what messed up the B story for me.

OTM. The Jim awards himself the prize scene was poorly done, but I can't blame the actors too much because what they were asking them to do was so absurd and out of character for almost all of them.

Its like the writers have completely abandoned reality to put Michael in these situations then pull him out of them with absolutely no ramifications. ...it just irks me that this season has Michael getting into increasingly ridiculous situations and it just gets shrugged off.

OTM.

Yeah, the Scott's Tots arc could've been salvaged with better actors. Since most of the school kids were dancers, but probably not actors, the reaction to Michael's "big news" was way off - there the same sort of phony outrage from the Jim scene, and everybody still looked too excited to be in the Office. The girl he meets at the beginning, before going into the classroom, was good I thought.

I've heard similar things from people, like they can't watch the show because of how mean he is or that he drives them nuts and they have anger towards him. Really? I also know somebody who doesn't like the show because of the "crappy camerawork" but that dude and his personality is its own thread.

Cunga, Thursday, 10 December 2009 23:28 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously, you feel uncomfortable because Michael does something terribly embarrassing? For real?

I feel this way, for real! Secondhand embarrassment triggers the fight or flight response in me. When I was a kid, every crappy sitcom I watched did that same plotline where the main character accidentally schedules two dates on the same night, and they have to rush back and forth between dates and make more and more outlandish excuses until they finally get caught. I seriously couldn't be in the same room as that shit, it made me want to tear out my hair.

The feeling's gotten less pronounced as I get older, but Michael promising twenty underprivileged students a college education and then watching him get caught in the lie was pretty much my own personal Nic Cage "NOT THE BEES! OH GOD MY EYES!" moment.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 12 February 2010 07:39 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, and now that it's done, i don't think the "jim becomes co-manager" thing ever really blossomed into anything funny. if anything it made jim increasingly humorless and unappealing, which i guess is realistic character growth but still a weird choice given the growing "Office isn't funny anymore" sentiment.

i'll admit though, i love erin and her insane perkiness, and even though the marketing is being obnoxious and trying to push andy & erin as the "return of the JAM YUMMINESS," i like their interactions together. plus i don't think the show would be as precious about their relationship as they were with jim and pam.

I admit Erin is a major factor in why I'm still consistently watching the show. Well, that, and being inbetween P&R and 30 Rock and laziness. But I don't think the show is really bad, it's still amusing, its lost its spark, though.

I feel like the characters have been so developed that they've grown out of their initial purposes as ingredients to the satire of everyone's relatable office experiences. Now, instead of an accessible look into the awkward days of office life (just like yours and mine!), its self-referential and complicated and even the minor characters struggle to hold on to their purpose. Also, why did Pam become such a hard-ass?

I still watch this and I think it would have to get considerably worse before I cut it off completely, but I watch everything on Hulu days afterward and arrange them in order of favorites ascending...it used to be second place behind 30 Rock but now Modern Family and Community are ahead of it.

musically, Saturday, 13 February 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

Modern Family is amazing. It's a brilliant set-up for a show, endless variety of situations can be pulled from the one extended family. The interview/documentary aspect is a bit forced but it is on Parks and Recreation as well. Pretty easy to suspend disbelief. Amazing stuff like the MLK Jr Day blackface baby gag, pretty much everything Phil says and does, etc. I'm a believer.

dan selzer, Saturday, 13 February 2010 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

i can not believe modern family did an episode that explored coulrophobia and the history of clowning. so impressed! it's one of the few eps i've seen, but that signals to me that the writers probably have a LOT up their sleeves.

My favorite part so far is when Nick the IT guy made that horrible joke.

Cunga, Friday, 5 March 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

I didn't really watch this (lol WoW) but I did catch the "Who wants to live in a world..." bit and Jim's extreme discomfort with the nursing coach, which was awesome. I guess the rest of the show featured the cast stomping on mice, based on the reactions here?

Bunsen burner, bubbles, IT'S ALIVE! whaaaaa-? (HI DERE), Friday, 5 March 2010 22:07 (fifteen years ago)

Nah, it was amusing enough, though I wasn't a huge fan of the Dwight/Michael stuff, I dug that for the most part they used the episode to show some awkward/uncomfortable stuff for Jim and Pam - a good reversal of tone from the Niagra episode (though I enjoyed that one too).

Nhex, Friday, 5 March 2010 22:13 (fifteen years ago)

C'mon guys, there were much worse eps earlier this season than this.

Cunga, Friday, 5 March 2010 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

Nhex, Friday, 5 March 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

it was ok i guess, not great but yeah, def. not the worst episode i've seen. they seem really resigned on having michael's main source of humor be the mispronunciation/conflation of words, huh

sleepingbag, Friday, 5 March 2010 23:15 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, the show seems to be squeezed pretty dry at this point. I am a fan of the Andy-Erin relationship angle, finally.

om nom nom nom de plume (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 5 March 2010 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

It's not that this episode was any better or worse than any other episode this season, it's just that I reached a point last night where I was focusing less on the sausage than I was on seeing how the sausage is made. These characters all have such obvious go-to modes now that there's nothing surprising about any single one of them. An occasional line might make me laugh, but it feels like work watching this now instead of an entertaining diversion.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 6 March 2010 01:11 (fifteen years ago)

the andy erin relationship is so gross, it's like a serial killer x a sexy four-year-old. o for the glory days of DWANGELA, JAM, RELLY!!!!!

Johnny otm. Watching this week's I felt like I might finally give up on the show, not because of the particular episode but basically for the reasons Johnny mentioned.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Saturday, 6 March 2010 01:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah like all the subplots are super annoying now. i wish jim and pam were never having a baby, it makes it like a real serious tv show about life. zzzzzz.

harbl, Saturday, 6 March 2010 01:15 (fifteen years ago)

And the Ryan hipster thing is so unexplained I'm not sure whether its a random character development thing, Novak's new fashion obsession making its way into the show, or some inside joke only the cast gets.

Evan, Saturday, 6 March 2010 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

the joy is that it is unexplained. he reads a poem to kelly, then two scenes later he's claiming to be single. he's the exact same as he was in the earlier seasons, and they know that.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Saturday, 6 March 2010 03:14 (fifteen years ago)

But how did he get there? It would have been alright if there was even one scene or character (maybe I missed it) that acknowledged it, like Jim seeing him all hipstered out, being confused, and smirking to the camera. Otherwise I keep feeling like I missed that scene or episode.

Evan, Saturday, 6 March 2010 03:20 (fifteen years ago)

it's been progressing in the background, which i thought was the joke.

It's just lazy writing.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 6 March 2010 03:51 (fifteen years ago)

i think a 5-second shot of Increasingly Hipster Ryan every episode is bound to be funnier than any actual plotline they could give to him at this point.

the jaws of impermanence and soul death (reddening), Saturday, 6 March 2010 05:16 (fifteen years ago)

It's just lazy writing.

Yeah, even though I'm kind of amused by the Ryan jokes in a way it epitomizes everything that's wrong with the show now. It's so self-indulgent and has so lost the plot that Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak are now spending their time making cute little in-jokes about hipsters and the internet (Dwight's wolf shirt) every episode.

But reddening makes a good point: the Ryan character was kind of ruined a long time ago anyway.

Cunga, Saturday, 6 March 2010 05:26 (fifteen years ago)

this can't be possible, because it's not funny at all.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 6 March 2010 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

like why not have him DO hipsterish stuff? their big idea is just new outfits every week?

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 6 March 2010 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

Thats kind of what I mean. Its suggesting a subplot thats never really feels addressed, so its confusing to the audience. And like I said, even a slight scene to acknowledge or introduce this new development would have been enough.

Evan, Saturday, 6 March 2010 05:53 (fifteen years ago)

This show is clearly never going to be as good as it used to be, but I got quite a few more laughs from this one than I had from about half a dozen prior.

the jaws of impermanence and soul death (reddening), Saturday, 6 March 2010 06:59 (fifteen years ago)

also now that i think of it, maybe the joke is supposed to be that Ryan's been dressing in increasingly outlandish and attention-grabbing ways all season, but neither the employees nor the documentary crew give enough of a shit about Ryan to figure out why.

the jaws of impermanence and soul death (reddening), Saturday, 6 March 2010 07:04 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe, but you'd see him trying to get that attention slightly beyond the outfit if that were the point. He is barely acting any differently (except for that poem scene pictured above).

Lol @ this thread, "I hate this show but I'm going to spend hours arguing about it on the internet and analyzing why a character wears clothes".

It's not that we hate the show, it's that we used to love it and we're pissed that they're ruining it.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 6 March 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)

I was teasing, really. I'm in the same boat, I just can't be bothered to care enough to figure out why. If you would have told me 2 seasons ago it would be my least favorite of the Thursday night line-up (not to mention that one of the better ones would feature Chevy Chase and the guy from The Soup), I would have laughed in your face.

Still, I thought this week's episode was one of the peaks of this season. Which really shows you how low the bar is right now. The Dwight contraband was hilarious, especially because the cop knew it was him! And Jim was more likable than he's been in aaaaaaages between the "frazzled" bit and the lactation consultant.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Sunday, 7 March 2010 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

ryan's hipsterism (esp moleskine) is hilarious, and it is TOTALLY the point that the doc crew isnt making a big deal about it, and he's attention-seeking and seeking some relevance/edge with it just like with his beard. andy and erin is a terrible idea if it works out. everything else is basically fine. generally, i want the show to be about the day-to-day stuff that happens at the office and NOTHING ELSE, but im okay with jim and pam stuff, because theyre like america's sweethearts.

I'm not sure if it's great for the show's future as it has been getting a little too wacky, but I liked the difference between tonight between Michael and Erin and all their scenes together - she was just so over the top weird it actually gave Michael a chance to not be the dumbest guy in the room, their interplay was great. Erin's going to have a really dark past, isn't she? Also "I resent the implication that I can be trusted with any secrets!"

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

stopped watching for good when Kathy Bates and "Gabe" appeared.

Season 2 of this show is still one of my favorite things, though.

Actually, time for a breakdown

Season 1 - Only five or six episodes. Showed great promise, two or three classic episodes (Diversity Day, Basketball Game)

Season 2 - Perfect season iirc. Not one bad episode. A great mixture of droll comedy with surprising bits of pathos.

Season 3 - Almost as good as two. The Season 3 finale would've been a beautiful ending to the entire series.

Season 4 - Still occasionally terrific, though it was starting to get much more broad and you could tell the actors were unnecessarily chipper because the show was a big hit and they were all starting to become celebrities. The charming "who are all these talented, unknown actors?" quality that the show had previously (exception for Carell) was gone. Writers strike really messed up some story arcs.

Season 5 - Occasionally rather dull and you could tell they were running out of ideas for where to go with the show and what to do with certain characters (epitomized with BJ Novak).

Season 6 - *sigh* all the problems of season 5 but even worse. Haven't seen the last half of it myself. Previously charming or somewhat redeemable characters now coming off much worse or are just tired.

Cunga, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 00:26 (fifteen years ago)

I can't argue with any of that.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 11 August 2010 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

I imagine 31k will get you further in Scranton than it will in Philadelphia.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)

In the Halloween episode (season two), Michael needs to find a way to keep from firing somebody, so he asks the accounting department "Um, I'm going to need you to find, like a, a full employee salary plus benefits, like fifty grand. I'm going to need you to find 50 grand in the numbers."

I guess that would mean Michael himself makes about $75,000 (a little less than the mean regional manager salary of $85,000, since he does not have a bachelor's degree).

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

This is a fantasy show at this point anyway. They'll probably give Dwight super powers next season.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

I never got the impression that they made big money. The houses they live in seem fairly modest to me, and wasn't there a whole plotline early on about how Michael made little more than a starting wage because it never occurred to him to ask for a raise. Dwight's a different issue, because his family obviously have money buried in graveyards and hidden under stable floors, but the rest never seemed disproportionately wealthy.

I'm actually going to subject myself to the next hour of NBC television because I'm morbidly curious about how bad bad can actually get.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 September 2010 00:47 (fourteen years ago)

From what I've heard about Outsourced it can get REALLY bad.

While this isn't a legally binding statement, I'm pretty sure that was the last episode of The Office that I'll ever watch.

The opening of this episode was impressive in a "plumbing new depths" way.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 24 September 2010 03:35 (fourteen years ago)

I really don't know why I subject myself to new episodes. With every other show I gave up on it was so much easier to make a clean break.

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 24 September 2010 03:37 (fourteen years ago)

i don't really have the hate for the show you guys have, but basically feel the same way - just watching it out of inertia. i guess at least they'll have to wrap up Steve Carell's character this year, so there's some motivation

They all just became cartoon characters. They used to be "real" people in relatable office situations and relationships...

I stopped watching this altogether last January, and I think I have been able to figure out a huge part of where this show has gone wrong: this show, when it worked, was about the tension between office and private life, and the fact that people spent all day every day with people they didn't really know and to an extent couldn't stand. Now, everyone is an open book to every one else, and that book is a copy of Archie Comics.

No Good, Scrunty-Looking, Narf Herder (Gukbe), Saturday, 25 September 2010 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

alan sepinwall did an interview with paul lieberstein (now executive producer) over the summer, and paul called last season "strong." so i'm not holding out any hope that they're going to suddenly realize the error of their ways.

everything about the last couple seasons feels really perfunctory, compared to the emotional involvement of the early days. like jim and pam had a baby and it has changed nothing about them as people, except that sometimes they say "oh we need to make more money for the baby" to drive the plot along. or when the show briefly flirted with getting dwight and angela back together, and then it just kind of went nowhere and fell apart over the course of four episodes.

it sucks and you all love something that sucks (reddening), Sunday, 26 September 2010 00:00 (fourteen years ago)

It's kinda lame but actually the whole Human Beinz thing made me smile alot because 1) I have no idea what internet meme they are referencing and 2) that song is just kick-ass.

All of Michael's constructive criticism is paying off.

what a flock of lame (Kerm), Sunday, 26 September 2010 23:53 (fourteen years ago)

if the nephew is never seen again, this was a weird blind alley to go down for a return episode (esp with Michael's family estrangement being out of nowhere?), but I guess it's setting up - as if it needed to be any more set up - Sabre being aware of his incompetence and presumably being happy to lose him by the end of the episode

good riddance btw - we can do with no more "Michael lies in the meeting room, then confesses, then everyone reacts" scenes, and lots more of the other characters. OMG @ Erin/Gabe!

totally didn't get the musical opening, and unlike the wedding dance, the reference wasn't able to be figured out from context. <3 sulky Jim bursting into song though.

Removing all the layers and stripping down your characters to only their most recognizable traits and then exaggerating them is supposed to be the job of parodies, not something self-inflicted, unless you're a children's cartoon show.

Also, they used to create the illusion that they were people working in an office, now they might as well be prancing around in front of a painted backdrop, or a green screen.

I will always think of you, while (quite) fondly, myself (Evan), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 13:15 (fourteen years ago)

Carell still gets me as an actor, something I've been paying attention to more since his confrontation with Stanley. The whole "Toby psychoanalyzes Michael in the breakroom" was a bit much, but the look Carell gave after Toby talked about walking from the yogurt shop after dropping his little girl off on Sundays tore me up.

the end of last season was chock-full of office stuff, having to broaden/dilute their sales skills to flog Sabre printers etc (admittedly the non-sales staff get short shrift, but this goes for their personalities and plotlines these days too). there's been 'dealing with new corporate overlords' stuff in both eps this year.

I enjoyed the episode, but the moment afterwords when the whole "gang" from the office shows up was so ridiculous. I had to check my email while Andy was blowing it, couldn't look at the screen. Nice misdirection since the commercials made you assume Michael alone would cause the uncomfortable and awkward disturbance.

The Office is kind of the devil we know at this point. If it leaves, we might get another Outsourced instead of another Parks & Recreation. 9pm is a Thursday deadzone for me now, though, because CSI finally went off the deep end last night, kind of like what The Office did last season. I just reached a point about 15 minutes in where I was like "I CANNOT WATCH THIS ANYMORE EVER!"

I still don't understand why the stronger-performing 30 Rock isn't on at 8 to lead into Community at 8:30. Seems like it would benefit both shows, but I guess NBC is more comfortable making Community the sacrificial lamb who goes against The Big Bang Theory and then counting on people to switch channels when it's over.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 16 October 2010 03:38 (fourteen years ago)

kind of lame to not actually bring holly back onscreen though.

I thought this too initially. But in a way it worked better not to show her. Their exchange made more sense over the phone (more uncomfortable, and anyway something tells me the characters would have acted differently face to face). Besides, given his message to her at the end, I'm hoping that this was merely a set-up for something bigger down the road.

Dean Pelton's Lady Gaga costume was soooo much better than Gabe's.

Oh yeah, so much better. And it did make MUCH more sense. I do have to admit, though, that I actually laughed out loud at The Office this week. More than I have yet this season and most of last season too. The cold open with Stanley was lol and so much better than the forced memes they've been playing with.

Back to the topic at hand though, its killing me that I can't remember where the "I love you" - "I know" reference is from. I know I should know that one. Donald Glover's timing is perfect. His "I have no idea why I thought this would work" switch was so great, as was his "sexy Dracula" costume.

The only part I really liked was Kevin getting upset after Michael yelled at him.

But, whose idea was it to put a fog machine/dry ice during the little runway costume contest? Why are they so actively trying to destroy any connection this show had to believability? I know its a lesser example but still that kind of stuff is so opposite of how well they used to do subtly and relatable situations.

But, whose idea was it to put a fog machine/dry ice during the little runway costume contest?

Pam's obv, duh

Looved Gabe in this one, he should stay in Gaga costume all season. Also loved Andy getting confusedly turned on at Gagabe's runway strut. Like Daryl getting recognition at work, he's earned it*. Loved Kelly actually shouting down Michel Scott's toddlerism at the party! Like the Stanley gags in the opener playing off stuff we've seen Stanley do for six years. Generally hate Packer but liked him coming back in for a party and giggled at his trouser mouse. <3 at Pam embracing her dorkiness and Jim's to-camera bit afterwards. Rly rly liked the punchlining from Oscar's win being done with shot-earlier to-camera pieces!

I enjoy spending time with these characters still, and no bitter grouches on ILX are gonna stop me!

*and promotion from within, if they went that way [although this early in the season I'm sure it's a shitty misdirect] would be better both for the show's dynamic - forcing it to change rather than fly in another "wacky boss" to suck all the energy from the plots toward themself - and for acknowledging Jo's management style.

Community is a show filled with caricatures. It never tries to be anything else. The office started with realistic characters who've now turned into something else, and as good as they are at being one dimensional, you can't completely ignore their past, unless you start a new show and call it Parks and Rec.

Pinktits, Thursday, 4 November 2010 16:19 (fourteen years ago)

I don't care enough to get into a fight about this, but I think Community's characters are more three-dimensional than the Office's characters ever were. (Esp since most of the supporting characters on the Office didn't even have personalities until the 3rd or 4th seasons -- rewatch early eps and you'll notice that like Kelly for instance is a totally different character than in later episodes.)

Mordy, Thursday, 4 November 2010 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

What I do with my dvr to get around nbc's coda problem is record community and set it to stop 90 minutes after the episode's over. You get the whole Thursday lineup as a block in one recording. (you don't have to watch outsourced just because you recorded it btw)

whenever they do an ep outside the office -- and this is two in a row -- there's something a bit bunuelian about everyone's lack of outside friends

the godfather exchange was funny (one of the only funny bits in the dreadful christening ep) but, like, really, jim and pam have chosen someone from birthing classes or whatever? okaaaaay, totally normal

this ep had enough jokes, on the whole, but the bit at the end with erin and michael was really mishandled and sloppy

this show is terrible now. I didn't hate last season, but this one has just been dreary.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Friday, 3 December 2010 22:59 (fourteen years ago)

i laughed some at last night's episode, and i think the addition of erin and gabe had freshened up the show a bit, but i'm the same as jon: this used to be my favorite show on television, and now it feels like a chore to watch. what's also frustrating is that none of the writer/exec folks will admit that the show has gotten bad. it's like, really? they've given in completely to caricature and all but abandoned the realism inherent in the documentary conceit. i remember back in S3 i used to have excited fangirl arguments about how they were going to eventually factor in the documentary stuff, but now...they've just kind of let it go. climactic moments happen from multiple angles, uptight christian angela no longer cares that her indiscretions are being filmed, whatever. it's all lazy and broad now.

literally the worst thing that ever happened on this planet (reddening), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

I always felt that the documentary conceit was too close to the original Office, and that this production was always about the impro talents of the players. The caricature did get a bit silly 2-3 years ago but I reckon it's settled nicely into a groove now.

one-time Perrier winner Frank Woodley plays a loveable dad (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:20 (fourteen years ago)

I'm grimly fascinated by the show. Shows that pervert and insult everything that made the show good usually get cancelled pretty quickly, but this one keeps trucking along!

Like, remember when the humor of the show came from the office being such a boring, annoying place to work in? Now it seems like an awesome place to work!

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:24 (fourteen years ago)

I'm sure the hivemind will disagree with me here but every character continues to do things that are true to character, and grows and mutates believably. We are never surprised by anything anyone does in any episode.

(Dwight is not believable but he never has been so)

one-time Perrier winner Frank Woodley plays a loveable dad (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:30 (fourteen years ago)

But it's not funny anymore.

Clay, Saturday, 4 December 2010 00:37 (fourteen years ago)

I always felt that the documentary conceit was too close to the original Office, and that this production was always about the impro talents of the players.

nevertheless the show committed to the documentary format early on, and they've been using the limitations of the conceit to heighten the drama for a long time (initial sneaky capture of jim and pam's first kiss, interrupting pam's talking head for jim to ask her out, no microphone in the ER when pam finds out she's pregnant, etc). for them to let the underlying limitations of the show slide away because it's easier is kind of emblematic of how lazy they've gotten.

and i said this a couple weeks ago, but jim might as well not be on the show anymore for all he's been contributing. i don't know if john krasinski's just checked out mentally or if the writers have stopped caring about him or both, but there's nothing compelling about jim any more.

they clearly bailed on their initial conception of Michael and have made him more lovable and harmless every year. He hasn't "grown" as a character; he's been dumbed down for idiots who squee at love triangles and baby plotlines.

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 4 December 2010 01:57 (fourteen years ago)

I do agree with the last two posts tbh

one-time Perrier winner Frank Woodley plays a loveable dad (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 4 December 2010 02:19 (fourteen years ago)

It does feel like there's no tension between these characters anymore, at least anything that could be considered an arc. But I think it wouldn't really matter if the show was as funny as it used to be, and it isnt. I do think that it's only slightly less funny than it used to be, but the lack of character arcs tends to make that more unforgivable.

Not dumbed down but definitely softened. It's not out of the realm of possibility for a character like MS to mature and improve through self-awareness or whatever, but I do think it works against the show a little bit. Not a bad thing considering Carell is leaving anyway.

Carrell has said in interviews that there was a conscious effort to make Michael more likable after season 1. Ratings improved, so they just kept making him more harmless and agreeable to the point where now he's boring as fuck.

been repping for this show for a while, but the laziness of the writing is palpable. it's like the writers are banking on how much I love the characters that I'll keep watching even though only every third episode has any LOLs in it (& they're totally right, I might add)

That being said, I liked this episode: the way they handled Holly's return was a little disappointing, but there was some funny jokes: Dwight's wigs, Kevin getting upset over the maple candy, "when my grandmother dies, I'm going to kill myself."

That was great, but Dwight assaulting Jim with snowballs until he was bleeding was kind of disturbing.

Moodles, Friday, 10 December 2010 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

It was disturbing, but also the most "real" the show has felt in a long time. Like, that happens, people cross a line and make other people feel really uncomfortable. Much better than the forced Michael Scott "awkwardness" of the past two seasons.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 10 December 2010 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

The weirdest thing they do a lot is have every character in the room involved in any conversation. Its like if you put all of the characters from this season into the first season Jim would go over to Pam to talk and they would turn around and everyone in the office would be quietly watching them until they had something cliche of their character to input.

I thought the Jim/Dwight snowball fight was a little ham-handed: I really did not feel bad for Jim at all, & I kinda want to watch the ep. again for signs that this was an intentional part of the effect. I'm really hoping the rivalry resolves itself a little bit; I like Jim/Dwight way better when they're working together (the sales call, Kelly's birthday) than when they're feuding (though that definitely has brought some laughs to the table as well...)

Quesadilla Road Trip 2010 (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 10 December 2010 19:52 (fourteen years ago)

one of my bigger lols of the episode was Holly's "You two used to be best friends!"

BO (DJP), Friday, 10 December 2010 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

This was a really great episode in which I cared for the characters again. Jim and Dwight's rivalry got heated which is pretty cool drama (I wonder if it will be back to the same old after this episode)

It was interesting to read that BJ wasn't one of the writers because his character has sort of found a stopping point from all the awkward changes... and Ryan is a bit of a doosh. I feel like BJ may be reliving his worst moments when bringing out the doosh in Ryan but ultimately gaining closure over "who he used to be like" vs. "Who he is now". And of course, Ryan isn't always a doosh and he probably isn't completely done changing. Nonetheless, Ryan is very much like the kind of dooshes you would see in a real office. A nice touch of realism when so many characters feel like muppets for more than half the time

I liked this episode a lot...Max otm about this season, the last few episodes have been surprisingly funny given how bad it was last season.

Peyton Flanders (Nicole), Friday, 18 February 2011 13:23 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i agree. and it is surprising cuz i had sorta written the show off altogether. i'm so mean cuz i just want everyone on the show to make fun of pam and jim all the time. i love when they are the brunt of the joke. cuz they really bug me.

the seminar episode had me laughing a lot and it felt weird cuz the show hadn't made me laugh in so long!

tonight's ep was good, but it's weird seeing Dwight switch from the loose-women loving dude who would try to use a rival's christening to attract new clients back into Michael's loving suckup

it's goofier than ever, but they are also trying to give michael more depth i think

but there's still some funny shit w/e

totally. everyone watching knows michael is going to leave and is reading it all in that light so it's weird that it isn't in the show.

otoh i like the absence of relationship dramas, not counting the half-hearted gabe-erin-andy thing, which was never even explained iirc.

whole series this year is about him ~growing up~ enough to walk away from the office

imo this season is much much better than s5 but not nearly as good as the height of s2 or s3. its got its moments, i watch it cause im watching community and parks and rec anyway

max, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 00:34 (fourteen years ago)

is this season 6 or 7? I liked 5 better than 6, and this is somewhere between those for me. I've really wanted to like this season, and certain episodes have been close to great with just a few really wrong notes that spoiled them.

rockapads, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 00:51 (fourteen years ago)

its great that they took the focus off jim and pam, and gave more time to darryl/andy/erin/kelly, but character consistency has gone down the tubes. feels kind of like a sketch show now.

max, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 00:55 (fourteen years ago)

well said. my thoughts exactly

rockapads, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 01:15 (fourteen years ago)

I liked s5 if only bcz of Holly & the Michael Scott Paper Co. But then again I'm the kind of guy who finds Dwight's fire drill & Jim in a tux as the height of hilarity. That said, s7 has good moments and maybe taken as a whole, on DVD, it will make more sense, but it's def. a diff't show now, more weird than funny usually, and if you already thought the show was on a downward slope, then this season won't change your mind...

if music be the fuiud of love then piss off (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

I liked s5 if only bcz of Holly & the Michael Scott Paper Co.

Holly was fire (as was Stringer) and Michael Scott Paper Co was an awesome setup, but they hit the reset button an episode or two later, instead of letting it play out and create some interesting change or conflict

The Marquis de Sade Adu (sic), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 04:57 (fourteen years ago)

finally caught up with this year's episodes, and what i can say, i am generally enjoying the Michael Scott farewell tour. Threat Level Midnight was good stuff. Part of that is just having more a sense of something happening than the last year of boring stuff like the Erin/Andy thing. Also I love Holly FOREVER, and the pairing with Michael is just amazingly right imo

James Spader is working on a deal to return to NBC's The Office this season -- but he might have loftier ambitions than Michael Scott's desk. According to Entertainment Weekly, Spader is in talks to return as Robert California, who appeared last season interviewing for Scott's office-manager job (thanks to Steve Carell's pending departure from the series). But the twist is that Robert might actually be in the running for Dunder Mifflin CEO, currently played by Kathy Bates, whose Harry's Law was renewed for next season.

Was rereading this thread as I watched season six —or was trying to— and man the constant complaining about how “the show sucks now” basically makes it unreadable. Spoiler: the show did not suck

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 29 June 2018 07:55 (seven years ago)

yeah, I might say exactly the same upthread, but: while the Mike Schur years are way above the rest, and the Lieberstein years take a variety of major and lesser missteps, this stayed a good and funny sitcom until the end. the biggest mistake was not working to divest from Michael Scott early, instead of making a massive deal about how important Carell was - it could have rolled on stronger by leaning on the ensemble and letting more characters have A-plots. changing up the cast more organically than parachuting various stars (and later, nobodies) into a status quo they were otherwise desperately trying to hold wld have helped this too.

kelp, clam and carrion (sic), Friday, 29 June 2018 09:32 (seven years ago)

if you rewatch this show, for the first half of the series Michael Scott basically was a love-able Donald Trump: a racist sexist idiotic failson who's right hand man Dwight even has a Nazi connection

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 29 June 2018 12:13 (seven years ago)

Weirdly, my older daughter (now 13) and all her friends are suddenly into this show. I watched a few later episodes with her - I want to say I originally stopped even before Carell left - and oof, they were exhausting and unfunny. To me, at least.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 June 2018 12:30 (seven years ago)

Share your mystification, Josh. Actually just got home and my 15 year old daughter was rewatching an episode. She and her friends were obsessed with the show a couple years ago, to the point of buying each other Office merch for birthday presents. Not sure what the appeal of a workplace comedy is for young teens (girls in particular?), but all good because I enjoy watching it with her (and she's gone on to become a full-on film junkie who's willing to watch slow art films with her dad).

Man, fingers crossed, because this is exactly what I've been complaining about not happening for months.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 29 June 2018 18:06 (seven years ago)

i think its hilarious you guys are confused by why young teenagers might like what is essentially a romantic comedy for the first three seasons

there's the occasional unfunny ep throughout--and season 4?? i think? whenever its immediately after pam & jim finally get together--has a drop-off before they regain footing ... but mostly i think its good til michael leaves, and maybe a couple episodes after
