Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 07:47 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, also please feel free to write things about the shows you vote for, ala the music polls, to make it look better, encourage people to watch your favourite show and then have a bunch of people say OTM and make you feel smart.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 07:49 (fifteen years ago)

is it too late to nominate in the loop?

thomp, Thursday, 24 September 2009 08:12 (fifteen years ago)

Isn't In The Loop the film version of The Thick Of It (which is nominated)?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 08:14 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah. i haven't woken up yet.

thomp, Thursday, 24 September 2009 08:52 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sure this was covered in the other thread(s), but you're supposed to vote for output in this decade, right? For example, if I thought Buffy or The Simpsons were crappy in 2000 and beyond, then I should not vote for them? Or does overall achievement count?

Jouster, Thursday, 24 September 2009 09:04 (fifteen years ago)

Didnt Futurama start in 99?

Dearth Disco (Trayce), Thursday, 24 September 2009 11:37 (fifteen years ago)

Oh wait nm

Dearth Disco (Trayce), Thursday, 24 September 2009 11:41 (fifteen years ago)

Vote however you like. I'm personally voting on merit within the decade.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

what the fuck is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and what type of person would nominate it?

ENBB Otter's Pug Band Christmas (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

It's actually a quite funny short starring Neil Patrick Harris.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

It was a funny Joss Whedon during-the-strike internet special comedy thing about supervillains staring Doogie Howser and... dunno bruv.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

Some people aren't voting for the full 25 so I guess i'll specify: The points system will work the same, 1st-250 and minus 10 each ranking just as far as you go down.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:14 (fifteen years ago)

oh this will be a good way to put off work for the evening.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:24 (fifteen years ago)

Just noticed a big thing missing from the list: The Apprentice UK. It's like someone forgetting Merriweather Post Pavillian in the decade LP list or something considering how populated the threads get when its on. Poor suralan.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:27 (fifteen years ago)

WHY ISNT TV FUNHOUSE ON THIS LIST? FUCK YOU

ENBB Otter's Pug Band Christmas (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck who? If anyone had mentioned it on either of two different threads it would have made it and yet... obviously no-one cared enough for this TV Funhouse you talk of.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck ILX for stanning for 800 retarded Adult Swim shows but not TV Funhouse

ENBB Otter's Pug Band Christmas (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

Shit, forgot to include CYE in my top 25. Ah well, it'll get plenty anyway.

chap, Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

ok you realize there's a way to make that point without sounding like a baby throwing a tantrum, right Whiney

alship journey to papa (some dude), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

anyway I'm voting for SNL, the sum total of TV Funhouse stuff on there >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the 8 episodes of the TV Funhouse series that iirc was kind of disappointing at the time

alship journey to papa (some dude), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

eh, it's the internet.

ENBB Otter's Pug Band Christmas (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

ENBB Otter's Pug Band Christmas (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 24 September 2009 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

Cynical bump #1: So that Mad Men huh? Pretty racist/sexist, huh?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

Can we use all our 25 votes to vote for The Wire?

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:40 (fifteen years ago)

No. :)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

I was a big stan of the TV Funhouse show and thought about nominating it, but in retrospect it's sorta a watered down Wonder Showzen

iatee, Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago)

also, voting for The Simpsons = voting for The Simpsons (2000-2009) - rite?

iatee, Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

ok you realize there's a way to make that point without sounding like a baby throwing a tantrum, right Whiney

― alship journey to papa (some dude), Thursday, September 24, 2009 1:55 PM (2 hours ago)

haha probably should have chosen a different analogy

w/r/t/c (k3vin k.), Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:46 (fifteen years ago)

'tis a 2000-09 poll my friend, so yuh. It's also a decade where they sliced more and more of the good bits out of the originals to fit in more adverts though, if you want to vote for the watered-down classics.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

i think it's a fairly obvious judgment call. a show that's been around for decades (like the simpsons) you'd only be voting for this specific decade; a show that started in the late nineties you can probably consider the whole series

xp iatee

w/r/t/c (k3vin k.), Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:48 (fifteen years ago)

no, to be fair, you should only consider the episodes originally aired in this decade ... e.g. only the last three seasons of Oz, and not the first three.

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:50 (fifteen years ago)

I'm abstaining because all the really shit British TV people I think less of people for liking is going to come far too high.

thomp, Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

The Book Group and even Black Books I can stand but MOCK THE WEEK and QI? no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no

thomp, Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

give all my points to peep show

鬼の手 (Edward III), Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

Surely it'll only come far too high because you won't be voting for the other stuff you think deserves it?

If everyone was to abstain from voting in the ILM polls because Geir turned up to the party...

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

combining American and British TV seems like a bad idea to me. Don't think I'll bother with this overly complex voting process either

man, motherfuck a paddington bear (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

oh come on, w/ the American voting majority, I doubt any UK show other than The Office is gonna place too high

xpxpxp

iatee, Thursday, 24 September 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

maybe 24th place is too high for him.

I dunno. I'm a 'Murican and there are plenty of British shows that are going to score very highly in my nominations. Of course, they're mostly shows that haven't made it to our shores in any legitimate, above-board format (we're still waiting for a region 1 release of the second series of the not-at-all obscure Peep Show, f'rinstance), so my standom might be the exception to the rule, I guess.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 24 September 2009 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

i completely disagree. here's an extreme example - the first part of freaks & geeks' only season aired in 1999, so would one vote solely on the merits of those episodes which aired post jan 1, 2000?
or what if a show ran four or five solid seasons, but your favorite was the first, which aired in 1999? would you disregard that one? would you vote for it in a hypothetical 90s poll, only for that season?

w/r/t/c (k3vin k.), Thursday, 24 September 2009 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

i think what i'm trying to say is, imagine the writers had incorporated lightsabers - but everythng else was the same

It's not my poll, but I'd say counting fall '99 would be okay, esp. since we're doing this poll in fall '09.

or what if a show ran four or five solid seasons, but your favorite was the first, which aired in 1999? would you disregard that one?

if a show had one good season in '98 and then was crap in later years, i wouldn't vote for it in a 00's poll.

The depressing thing though is I can only come up with about 18 things to vote for, by dint of not having *seen* a lot of these fscking shows. Goddamn shitty Australian FTA tv.

nah, it's because I'm not a big tv watcher, so instead of splitting my votes between a bunch of shows that are shoo-ins (sopranos, the wire) why not throw my weight behind an equally worthy dark horse (at least it is in the US). there is no way peep show will get anywhere near the number of votes it deserves. that first season is a thing of perfection + beauty.

except duh, there it is already. but yeah, I'll give that some points.

angry virgins seeking validation (sciolism), Friday, 25 September 2009 07:03 (fifteen years ago)

ilx must be quiet tonight, no one's popped in to make fun of me yet. here's my excruciatingly middlebrow list, should've posted it on the other thread but didn't. further ammunition.

Arrested Development
The Wire
Mad Men
The Thick of It
30 Rock
Screenwipe
Veronica Mars
The Daily Show/ Colbert Report
Doctor Who
then I'll divide the rest of my points among Futurama, Chapelle's Show, Peep Show, Snuff Box, and Project Runway. And Spongebob, why not.

angry virgins seeking validation (sciolism), Friday, 25 September 2009 07:16 (fifteen years ago)

hey. don't want to be an arse but three things: i asked you to email them to me because if everyone reveals their ballots before the poll it kind of takes the fun out of it, and I'm only doing the 250 - 10 thing because it is super easy for me to calculate everyones votes, instead of dividing remaining votes etc. I can do so if you want, I'll just resent you for making me do so.

Third thing: thank you for joining in! :) And thanks to everyone, turnout is looking good for the first day, I think.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 25 September 2009 07:26 (fifteen years ago)

It's cool, it turned out I haven't forgotten simple maths. I gave yr 10th place to futurama and then 120 points each to the others you mentioned. And now to carry on per normal.

Britishers- you've just to work and can't bothered doing what you are paid for or moaning about the daily mail? VOTE!

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 25 September 2009 07:58 (fifteen years ago)

Should Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares (UK) and Kitchen Nightmares (US) count as separate shows? Or are they so exactly the same show that it should only count once? (I only ask because I prefer the BBC version.)

tie me up, dress in drag, and read to me from the bible (kenan), Friday, 25 September 2009 09:27 (fifteen years ago)

in that case i think they should count as separate, since the UK version was that much better

sonderangerbot, Friday, 25 September 2009 09:47 (fifteen years ago)

bbc one? wow, just all british telly goes on bbc america, huh? I dunno, I was counting them as one because they are basically the same show with same presenter but different accents.

Not listed are a couple of Animal Planet channel shows that I'm addicted too: Animal Cops and Animal Armageddon. The latter is kind of a miniseries (about massive extinction events!!!!) rather than a show. Also, as was already mentioned, Nip/Tuck, a guilty pleasure. I haven't watched True Blood, but I will and I have a feeling it would be on my list. Can you list something that you anticipate liking? History of Britain is on my Netflix queue. Maybe I should do some serious cramming in order to cast a more comprehensive vote.

Jon Stewart vs The Wire, etc is such an apples/oranges sticky wicket.

how many ballots do you have?

k3vin k., Sunday, 27 September 2009 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

20 so far.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 27 September 2009 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

oh come on guys

k3vin k., Sunday, 27 September 2009 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

11 different #1s.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 27 September 2009 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

To be fair, it's open for over another month.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 27 September 2009 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

And I haven't voted yet.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 27 September 2009 19:14 (fifteen years ago)

Can you list something that you anticipate liking? History of Britain is on my Netflix queue. Maybe I should do some serious cramming in order to cast a more comprehensive vote.

Yeah my ballot is more or less done, but since I'm going to be home with a newborn for much of October I'm going to see how many shows I can check out on Netflix before voting. I think it's a terrible idea to vote for something you haven't seen but think you'd like, though.

guccislamic deejihad (some dude), Sunday, 27 September 2009 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

Well I didn't do it.

Beth Parker, Sunday, 27 September 2009 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

I'm staying impartial but I'm all for people making recommendations. I was bored enough to start the poll, I'm sure as hell bored enough to discover new TV.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 27 September 2009 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

My ballot's almost ready, but I did want to say a little something about my options. Would you prefer to receive the ballot and the comments separately?

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 27 September 2009 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

As I've been sent barely any comments, I'm not sure. Whatever works best for you.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 27 September 2009 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

Shameless bump #5: Takeshi's Castle huh? Mix mental japanese... umm... things with a crack addict narrator and you get gold, right?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 28 September 2009 14:09 (fifteen years ago)

wait i gotta mail you with 7 votes, is that right?

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Monday, 28 September 2009 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

One person only voted for 4 shows, so go for it.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 28 September 2009 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

that instruction has confused me. i mail you with how many votes? in order, with explanations?

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Monday, 28 September 2009 14:20 (fifteen years ago)

Email (you can use the ilx webmail if you want, it's the same address) me with up to 25 votes. Preferably in order. Explanations aren't mandatory.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 28 September 2009 14:29 (fifteen years ago)

ok, i have now seen those instructions in the first post.

What are the benefits of dating a younger guy, better erections? (darraghmac), Monday, 28 September 2009 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

I sort of forgot to nominate Dead Set because I sort of assumed someone else must have done it. The sight of According To Bex at the top end of the list somehow makes this oversight even worse.

ailsa, Monday, 28 September 2009 22:28 (fifteen years ago)

i wish someone had named 'xavier - renegade angel' but ill live

johnny crunch, Monday, 28 September 2009 22:34 (fifteen years ago)

I think According to bex may have been a case of something mentioning something crap on the top ten shows of the decade list but i added it just in case (i think i got every damn show mentioned on both of those threads and sorry, no dead set or xavier.)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 06:05 (fifteen years ago)

Shameless bump #6: They had Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo and The Shins; Gilmore Girls had to be the indie-ist show of the decade, right? (Skins losing points for lol nu rave.)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

i'm surprised no-one nominated Human Remains

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

Also, just noticed the show I possibly enjoyed most this decade didn't make the list: Popworld. Damn that Alex Zane for ruining everything. I will never stop hating that guy.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

oh man yeah Popworld was so crucial to my formative years as a music/pop culture junkie. I kinda hate Amstell and Oliver on their own now but together those guys were gold.

and yes, ugh alex zane!

Roz, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:37 (fifteen years ago)

But but but what about Buzzcocks? And his stand-up? And I'm sure Oliver will stop being on the horrible T4 and get a proper show one day (or hopefully already has) and I can love her again.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

Buzzcocks is great but he does sometimes go overboard on that show. I always liked that Miquita kinda reined him in whenever he got too bonkers.

never seen his standup though - any good?

Roz, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, although it was basically an hour of his dad trying to get him off boys and Miquita/Pop World jokes. (This was a couple years ago.)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 17:07 (fifteen years ago)

4 vote-worthy shows left off the list above (b/c they weren't mentioned on the other list?):

brotherhood
burn notice
chuck
ice road truckers

Sealegs Tetrazzini (Eisbaer), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

"a crack addict narrator" this is not the choice descriptor of c.charles

nah, said i wish she did.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

Craig Charles cld be adequately explained as a poet, Corrie actor, voice of Asterix, funk DJ, ex-Tranmere player, and occasional crackhead. He's a pretty awesome guy and a genuine renaissance man, in fact.

ogmor, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

Saw him DJ at Big Chill, he was pretty great.

chap, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

i never knew a lot of those things. i did like the funk show he had on the radio though, wonder if he still does it.

Is Red Dwarf suddenly in poor taste?

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 21:27 (fifteen years ago)

Dave'll do that to a show.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago)

I just think red dwarf is shit, though I guess he is pretty good in it

ogmor, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 21:41 (fifteen years ago)

Suggest Gandhi (onimo), Friday, 9 October 2009 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

Getting my ballot ready. Btw, two J.J. Abrams shows are missing from the list: Felicity (debatable, since it ran from '98-02) and Alias (which is definitely gonna be in my list somewhere).

Nhex, Friday, 9 October 2009 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

Except Alias had one (half) of an awesome season, then either terrible everything else.

Super Smize (Leee), Friday, 9 October 2009 22:43 (fifteen years ago)

i'm gonna have to disagree on that one - even the third season (where it really started to get thin) was pretty enjoyable for the most part. first two seasons are excellent imo

Nhex, Friday, 9 October 2009 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

True, it was enjoyable but pathologically frustrating at the same time, IIRC. But who am I to say no to such uneven quality? I nom nom nommed'd TSCC.

Super Smize (Leee), Friday, 9 October 2009 23:58 (fifteen years ago)

Shameless bump fun-time: So who is the hardest motherfucker on telly in the 0000000s then? Omar? Paulie? Ali G? Steve O? Raymond's brother who I can never remember the name of but he always puts food to his chin before he eats and he's the size of the house and most probably could take all of them if weapons aren't involved... plus the dad was bloody frankenstein so you know that's pretty hard? Bernard Black's liver? Buffy, she was a slayer of the vampires you know?

P.S. Superman was kind of wimpy and shite this decade, weren't he? Even if he was pretty...

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 11 October 2009 15:22 (fifteen years ago)

Chloe's more bad-ass than Superman this decade.

Hardest mofo on telly - Tony Almeida, man. He only exists to wander around being hard and moody. Even after he died.

ailsa, Sunday, 11 October 2009 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

ha, i forgot 24 even existed. :(

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 11 October 2009 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

I mean Chloe on Smallville in my first sentence, btw, though Chloe O'Brian's pretty badass, in a witheringly sarcastic sort of a way.

ailsa, Sunday, 11 October 2009 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

Almeida's soulpatch disqualifies him.

Super Smize (Leee), Sunday, 11 October 2009 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

I also forgot Secret Diary of a Call Girl (2007-2008), whose second season is making me trust my love of the first a bit more--just fantastic acting, writing, and handling of myriad moral, social, and sexual issues in a London setting Americans don't get to see much. The Slate pan was very stupid: Billie Piper is amazing.

I'm sure we can get away without 12 different The Hills spin offs and Hogan Knows Best. But if you want to vote for it, go crazy. Other people have voted for shit that isn't on the list. It's more of a reminder of what was made. Also if it isn't on the list it is unlikely anyone else will vote for it and it won't make the Top 50, but you can still have a go, I'm not picky.

shameless bump #15: Just spent the past half hour tallying up votes I hadn't counted in the past couple days and we have currently had 19 different shows voted #1 and 39 voters. Come on people, we can do better than that!

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 12:18 (fifteen years ago)

are we posting our votes yet then?

i worry i am the only person voting for friends, but that show really did hit its straps in the 2000s (pretty awful before then).

caek, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 12:23 (fifteen years ago)

Personally I'd say wait till after the results are posted to post your individual votes (just not to spoil it) but feel free to talk about shows and encouraging people to vote for things they may have forgotten.

I don't think I'm giving much to say that more than 1 person has voted for Friends tho.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 12:26 (fifteen years ago)

And also, anything you ever want to talk about post it so this thread stays near the top of new answers. :)

I made a mistake and didn't vote It's Always Sunny in my ballot because I wasn't really into it when I submitted the ballot. But it should be like #3 on my list. Can that be fixed?

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago)

So who was the best token best friend in this decades telly?

Hurley

WmC, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

I'll do it for you Mordy but just the once. If everyone starts asking for changes then it's just going to be too much work going over everything.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:43 (fifteen years ago)

you wanna bump everything from #3 down and knock off whatever was bottom of your list?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

Knock everything down to 23, and remove my #23 from the list?

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

(I don't mind losing #23. I wanna keep 24 + 25 tho.)

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:45 (fifteen years ago)

ok. i'll do it tomorrow, as i am too lazy to do it now. have left myself two large post-it notes to remind me.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:46 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks :)

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

Shameless bump #16 considering there are 90+ logged in: We've hit 40 ballots and 20 different #1s. Which is cool and all but there are 5,354 registered users.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, but 3,000 of those users are sockpuppets.

Mordy, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

oh yuh. but still, non-socks should vote. :)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

and 1,000 are googlers who registered to post once and another 500 were former regulars who haven't been here since 2005 (xpost)

Gucci_LaFleur (some dude), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

okokokok but there are currently 97 people logged in and less than half of that number has voted. just trying to up the ballots here.

Shameless bump #17 - So of the 247 shows that were nominated (or not nomimated but still voted for anyway), 42 still do not have a vote. This includes 2 that surprise the shit out of me, as I thought they'd be top 20 material.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

Also sorry for being an arse while trying to encourage people to vote. Never did Diddy any harm etc.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 15 October 2009 18:21 (fifteen years ago)

Barney Stinson or Brock Samson

woah dude marshall > barney.

never watched venture bros, should I?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 15 October 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

yeah actually Marshall might be a better call, i could go with that

i haven't sent in my ballot yet but Venture Bros. is top 5 for me and i'm really rooting for it, only really high up animated show on my list

Alan Lo (this display name doesn't really work because I'm not max) (some dude), Thursday, 15 October 2009 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

Venture Bros. is fantastic

Don Quishote (jjjusten), Thursday, 15 October 2009 18:45 (fifteen years ago)

ok i will check it out. and just as i was feeling this decade has been rubbish w/ toons. i guess i just heard that dangerdoom record and refused to ever watch any adult swim.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 15 October 2009 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

did some work and only 6 shows have broken 3000pts so far, 'tis looking pretty tight.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 15 October 2009 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

Venture Bros pisses on all other AS shows I've seen. It's got a proper storyline and characters and pathos and stuff.

Also, have you ever seen Samurai Jack?

chap, Thursday, 15 October 2009 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

I once thought about buying it on dvd and then decided to spend the money on whisky instead :( any childhood left in me died that day.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 15 October 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think Dangerdoom is a very good means of judging the cartoons on Adult Swim, let alone the cartoons of this decade in general.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 15 October 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

I don't like Venture Bros. :/

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Thursday, 15 October 2009 19:07 (fifteen years ago)

Well I love Futurama and South Park and Kim Possible and Spongebob. I got told to watch Ben 10 but couldn't be fucked. So I think DD did their damage.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 15 October 2009 19:08 (fifteen years ago)

Home Movies is gonna be on my ballot too and there are a couple shows i occasionally enjoy, but yeah it's good to kinda selectively pick and choose with Adult Swim stuff

i don't want Whiney to stay banned for very long, but for the time being it is nice to be able to talk about AS shows without him barging in and blurting obscenities

Alan Lo (this display name doesn't really work because I'm not max) (some dude), Thursday, 15 October 2009 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

This poll reveal is gonna be fun. Maybe I'll send you some blurbs. (Are you listing everything that got a vote, or should I only write blurbs for stuff I think might chart?)

Mordy, Monday, 26 October 2009 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

I'm going to do a top 50. blurbs are encouraged for things you think might be in that. i'll show the full rankings/points after but just the list, i cannae be bothered with blurbs and such. (after obviously because it would give away what is in the top 50.)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 26 October 2009 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a bit hesitant asking people to write blurbs though because if I say "hey, this was high on your list, wanna write about it?" it ruins the poll a little.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Monday, 26 October 2009 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

i think the way the Sopranos got killed on that vs. The Wire poll makes me not as actively rooting against it as i would be otherwise. there are a lot of comedies that i will be mad if they finish behind Arrested Development. and i had a pretty violent reaction to Friday Night Lights last week.

crazypoxyfule (some dude), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:00 (fifteen years ago)

Seinfeld ended in '98

Frasier ended in '04 but i think i got my fill of that show in those first 6 and a half years

crazypoxyfule (some dude), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

Shows I'm rooting against - Ummm, I can't stand Lost or Heroes or Family Guy. I'd also love for it to be a surprisingly British 50 just for LOLs.

^^^has no bearing on actual results btw and I am refusing to give away spoilers, just personal opinion as if I wasn't doing the poll.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

yeah totally rooting against family guy

k3vin k., Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

i dont really get how you could love 30 rock and not like AD

This seems just about right to me. I always liked AD a lot but I never quite loved it to the extent that others do. But I do love 30 Rock unabashedly. I really appreciated AD's cleverness and, y'know, the craft of the thing, but it left me a little cold at the end of the day. I guess I favor warmth and homey-ness to intellectual precision, but that's no dismissal of AD's obvious quality. Both are in the top ten of my poll, at any rate.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:33 (fifteen years ago)

wow i feel the exact opposite - AD has always felt the more warm and lovable to me.

Roz, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i was gonna say AD is definitely more emotional and twee if you line it up against 30 Rock, which is a little more, i dunno, catskills maybe

crazypoxyfule (some dude), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

imho that's part of what makes 30R better but obviously i'm speaking for noone but myself

crazypoxyfule (some dude), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

oh- dr who. may that get nary a vote

you can have this tapdance here for free (darraghmac), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

I just mean that AD always felt more like a big, well-oiled machine whose construction and mainenance I was always a little in awe of. It was some next-level shit. 30 Rock feels a little more ramshackle. Looser, but with a similar amount of care and attention to detail. And that just appeals to me more.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:45 (fifteen years ago)

I think 30 Rock is a bunch of awesome joke machines, whereas AD had characters I actually gave a shit about.

Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

xpost

Like, I get the feeling that funny and wholly serviceable material was probably cut from AD because it wouldn't have fit in to the overall plan for the show. Whereas 30 Rock has more freedom to go off on goofy tangents that may not get a callback. Just my perception, not necessarily a declaration of the actual real reality of the sitch.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, that's a little closer to the truth, i think. 30 Rock definitely does more for the sake of a joke rather than characterization or continuity compared to AD.

crazypoxyfule (some dude), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

im already cool w/the fact that most of this list will be terrible gay trash beloved by retards i just want a couple of the shows i really like to place. worried that im the only person that voted for like 1/2 my top ten

Guessing that because you guyz are chatting shit about AD/30R means they make the top50 (you don't do this for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition ;_;) - what other comedies you think will make it and you wanna bring into this conversation?

Other than the 3 we've been talking about and comparing today and The Office (either/both), really hard to say, probably -- Party Down or Eastbound & Down might have enough enthusiasm among their small followings. the populist three-camera sitcom fan in me roots for Two And A Half Men and Everybody Loves Raymond, but I don't think they stand a chance around here.

if we're talking animation too, probably Family Guy and Venture Bros., maybe a couple other Adult Swim shows? and as far as non-sitcoms, Daily Show surely.

crazypoxyfule (some dude), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

Two and a Half Men will almost definitely be in my list when I get round to making it.

ailsa, Tuesday, 27 October 2009 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

AD, 30 Rock, HIMYM, Peep Show, and both Offices will probably score the highest among the comedies. I'd like to think that Strangers With Candy and Reno 911! will also do well.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 27 October 2009 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

Curb Your Enthisuasm probably too

― crazypoxyfule (some dude), Tuesday, October 27, 2009 1:39 PM (2 hours ago)

i know everyone's past this but yeah, ^this and polyphonic otm. AD definitely had more real characters that i cared about, but one of the great/devastating things about it was how we identified w/ michael, yet he was still a mostly crappy father and completely gauche

k3vin k., Tuesday, 27 October 2009 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

OK, only included one un-nominated show in mine (so repping shamelessly for Dead Set now, because, y'know, ZOMBIES on prime-time-ish telly!), should probably have bumped something for similarly-unnominated Burn Notice, but don't think it's worth it, tbh.

Really hope that as shark-jumped as it was, The Simpsons still needs to place, if only because as Matt Groening's cousin, I get 5 cents every time it is mentioned on the Interwebs.

So that, and 30 Rock are the only comedies that place. Everything else is dire overrated tripe.

Leee, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

what generally well regarded shows are you rooting against or hoping finish surprisingly low?

Family Guy definitely, above all. House MD, if it has any chance at all. And 30 Rock's pretty much left me cold since the pilot, and I hated Wonder Showzen the one time I saw it. So them. (Never got Lost or Arrested Development, either, but I never tried much; ditto anything remotely related to Adult Swim, which I can't imagine I'd like.)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 03:16 (fifteen years ago)

family guy is not very well regarded on ilx

iatee, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 03:43 (fifteen years ago)

yeah it's cool to hate on it. i doubt it'll get any traction.

xp i liked all the shows you mentioned, but i'm 100% with you on House MD

Nhex, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 04:03 (fifteen years ago)

i occasionally watch and enjoy Family Guy, but i definitely don't respect it enough to have voted for it. it being a fairly ubiquitous show that brings out a lot of hate in people doesn't really mean it won't place in the poll, though, i could see it doing well.

Fry's dog and Fry's brother eps are probably better than most of what the Simpsons has done this decade.

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 10:34 (fifteen years ago)

i'm sure there are two simpson's episodes that are better than the average futurama output too. that's not really the question.

Well I cannot make time go any faster. I was going to prepare blurbs and things and double check everything next week and then have a 10-per-day reveal the week after. However, considering I have a funeral to attend a week Monday, I am going to try and speed through everything this weekend and *hopefully* do ten-per-day from this Monday. I've already been looking up youtube clips to attach to each placing show, for example.

So if people wanna send blurbs, do it sooner rather than later.

Also Pres. Keyes OTM.

Leee, Friday, 30 October 2009 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

it wasn't too hard to figure out gilmore girls + 24 other shows.

Gilmore Girls just barely missed the cut. :(

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Friday, 30 October 2009 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

If Gilmore Girls fails to crack the top 25, I'm instituting a mandatory board-wide viewing party until that horrendous oversight is rectified.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 16:38 (fifteen years ago)

I would support such action if needs be. Not that you will find out till next week.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 30 October 2009 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

It should be noted, though, that GG is only one of several shows on my ballot that would have been dropped altogether if they were judged solely on the basis of their final seasons.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 16:52 (fifteen years ago)

Was still better than the last season of Buffy. If only for the episode where Lane has the twins.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 30 October 2009 16:55 (fifteen years ago)

I definitely dropped some shows off my ballot that would've only been there because of the first couple seasons (coughcoughHousecoughcoughEntourage)

itsybitsyspiderMk2 (some dude), Friday, 30 October 2009 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

Anyone wanna make predictions or we gonna wait for the actual thread?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 30 October 2009 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

I think The Wire and the UK Office are a lock for the top five. Less sure on the other three. Arrested Development, probably. Ummm...30 Rock and The Sopranos rounding it out, maybe?

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

Lost sneaking in somewhere

see, i see that happening more likely with Family Guy

they were wein, so she drowned (some dude), Friday, 30 October 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

Where do you guys stand on the Gilmore Girls/O.C. ( East Coast/West Coast ) feud?

Philip Nunez, Friday, 30 October 2009 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

O.C. was the best batshit insane yet advertised as 'normal' telly of the decade. Gilmore Girls was just the best thing of the decade.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 30 October 2009 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

i voted for gilmore girls. i would consider getting a gilmore girls-themed tattoo. so, that's where i stand.

scott seward, Friday, 30 October 2009 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

yeah GG no question. The OC was fun for about one and a half seasons (and not even as fun as Veronica Mars was for one and a half seasons).

Roz, Friday, 30 October 2009 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

reminds me of mr.show ventriloquists feud: i believe that the east coast is the better of the two coasts. (or something like that)

how about the highest placing UK show?

Roz, Friday, 30 October 2009 18:00 (fifteen years ago)

Peep Show? Though I don't know how well known it is in the States.

OK Abacus (chap), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I'm just fucking with you, it's At Home W/ The Braithwates.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

don't UK'ers prefer Spaced to The Office?

I thought 'superhans' was 'superhands' for the longest time.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 30 October 2009 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

The Office will def place highest among the UK shows, Peep Show will def place second. And possibly within the top 10.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:06 (fifteen years ago)

As much as I love the Spaced crew's movies, I don't really rate Spaced all that highly, based on what I've seen. Couldn't really get into it.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

chap, I think Peep Show might've aired on BBC America, but only the first series is available on R1 DVD. Buncha crap. I love it to bits, but I have no idea if most of my countrymen are even aware of its existence.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

how many non fiction shows you fuckers think will make it, if any?

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

Sir David should do alright.

OK Abacus (chap), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

I have no interest in or experience with reality shows, so I couldn't say as far as that goes. Although I'm not really sure that those fit the rubric of 'nonfiction'.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

i struggled to make 25, if i'm honest.

Yeah, uh, I haven't voted in this poll because a list of my top 25 would probably be a list of the only 25 shows I've seen more than an episode or two of. However, I can rank these 25 shows if you like.

jaymc, Friday, 30 October 2009 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

One of the ballots was just 6 shows that person rated highly and they didn't think anything else deserved points. I'm cool with whatever.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

I struggled to narrow it down to 25, and since voting I've got into two shows that I'd like to have included (Breaking Bad and The Office US). The joys of lots of free time and low standards!

OK Abacus (chap), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago)

The US Office is one show I watch regularly and generally think is fine but which I did not vote for and do not feel at all bad about not voting for.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:31 (fifteen years ago)

All right, e-mailed you, Samuel.

jaymc, Friday, 30 October 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

Deadwood, on the other hand, was in my top three.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

i'm thinking definitely Daily Show, probably Planet Earth or American Idol or Colbert Report, and maybe The Soup or Survivor or Jackass or Big Brother or Top Model

they were wein, so she drowned (some dude), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

'probably planet earth' will win this thing, i think

Yo, Lout! (darraghmac), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

maybe! i guess it has a significantly higher profile in the UK than in the US, i had to kinda tell rave and tell people about it here.

they were wein, so she drowned (some dude), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

i hope samuel is keeping tabs of the uk/us votes, so we can declare a null and void this side if the wrong shows get in.

Yo, Lout! (darraghmac), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:28 (fifteen years ago)

xpost!

It'll be interesting to see where votes are affected based on geography. I'm probably voting for a disproportionately high number of UK shows for and Americaner. But my votes for things like The Soup might be wasted. Unless they have The Soup in the UK? I couldn't imagine they would.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

we have soup, only dutch people call it 'the' soup, but it's not a tv programme it's a tasty broth

Yo, Lout! (darraghmac), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

(yes we have 'the soup', at least anyone with satellite packages that include the E! channel and the like)

Yo, Lout! (darraghmac), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I have no idea who half the people who voted are. Some of the people were kind enough to include their usernames or have names v. similar to their screen-names but not enough for me to figure out fancy stats like that. And even if they did I think I would just sort it by 'anyone who talks about soccerball/in the uk watercooler thread v. evereryone else assuming they are foreign'

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:47 (fifteen years ago)

xpost, re: The Soup

Huh. I guess the general WTF?!?-ness of the shows on display would still translate even if you weren't familiar with the shows themselves or the 'personalities' therein.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

i think most o the shows would get airtime on the likes o the 'E!' channel too tbh.

Yo, Lout! (darraghmac), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

eh my '' key appears not to be working.

Yo, Lout! (darraghmac), Friday, 30 October 2009 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno. It's similiar to my baffled fascination about The Simpsons being so popular in the UK. I had always thought that it was so saturated with American culture as to be somewhat impenetrable to anyone outside of the country. But clearly the question is: what do I know?

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago)

American culture pretty saturated over here as well. :S But you know, with less country music.

Yeah, I forget sometimes that we're Cultural Masters of the Universe. I tend to just reverse the roles and think about how much stuff in British television kinda flies over my head, even though I'm probably relatively well-steeped in Britishness for an American.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 30 October 2009 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

Somehow most American shows I have great affection for have a lolbritisher in a prominent, usually not-as-a-Britisher, role. I don't do this on purpose, but don't you guys have your own actors? Is there a thread somewhere where this is discussed? (Hugh Laurie, Eddie Izzard*, Minnie Driver, Joseph Fiennes, Kevin McKidd, Ian McShane, Jonny Lee Miller - off the top of my drunken head, there must be more - all do varying degrees of passable Americans* in things you could surely find actual Americans to do)

* OK, Eddie Izzard is terrible at it

The Simpsons plays well over here because we get a whole ton of the stuff referenced in it. Spaced probably doesn't play well in America because they don't get a whole ton of the stuff referenced there.
