Wahlberg's the better actor, still hasn't shown us his limitations, and is still kinda hot. Damon's a limited actor who's made a few good action pictures and whose face is starting to resemble poached salmon.

Marky wins.

Mark's cocky, street-wise persona contributed to his fame. During concert performances, he was known for stripping to a pair of white briefs, gyrating his hips and rubbing his crotch.[10] In the dedication of his 1992 book Marky Mark, co-authored with photographer Lynn Goldsmith, Wahlberg says in the preface that "I wanna dedicate this book to my cock".[5]

MW is v short but also exceptionally nice and awesome. :D

a friend who worked on that eagles movie said they had to search far and wide for wee football players to stand next to him on the field.

Wahlberg's the better actor, still hasn't shown us his limitations

I love wahlberg, but I totally disagree with this. All his best characters are basically bullies of varying degrees of vulnerability. He needs other actors to bounce off of - any role where he isn't either pushing someone around or apologizing and he has no charisma. Damon could do all of wahlberg's roles competently but judging from Shooter I doubt Marky could do Bourne.

da croupier, Friday, 25 September 2009 00:59 (sixteen years ago)

Likewise, Damon would have a breeze just cocking around like Wahlberg in the Departed (admittedly with less volatility) while Wahlberg wouldn't have a chance of pulling off the soulless of Damon's character.

playing nice guys who are not bullies at all, cf three kings, boogie nights, the big hit

he bullies the shit out of spike jonze in three kings, and in boogie nights he's LITERALLY swinging a big dick around. i enjoy the big hit but i don't think his performance would be noteworthy without that "puddy tat" voice he's using. and I as I said above, I think the vulnerability has to come with the bullying. otherwise he's just a wet noodle like in rock star. damon is definitely more detached and intellectual but he can still play sincere.

A polar bear you can see in a snowstorm (rockapads), Saturday, 26 September 2009 06:21 (sixteen years ago)

My problem with Damon is that I never get any sense of him from his movies. He's got an extraordinarily closed-off acting style, and to me it's a turnoff. It's almost like he's hiding something about himself. How he got to be a bankable movie star is kind of hard for me to fathom, although given the action stuff he's been doing, showing emotion is not much called for. If he's gay and that's the reason (I have no knowledge or sense that he is) he should come out. Wahlberg is the more appealing actor to me.

Both of them have been in some great movies, though

My kneejerk reaction was Matt Damon but then I realized that underneath that putty goody-good face is actually an asshole who has managed to appear a good actor but isn't really. Whereas Marky Mark was a young douchebag but that was just a front really. Shit, I sort of dug his cocky ways. It was pretty cute. And he's not shy to (admit the) fail really So Marky Mark.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Saturday, 26 September 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)

Damon tends to be in fewer shitty films, and has never given a performance (that I've seen) that I'd call bad. Plus, Talented Mr. Ripley. He wins.

There was this interview with a woman playing a m->f transsexual (transamerica?) and her trick to approximating this was to make awkward exaggerations of how a woman behaves, and this is also the trick Andy Samberg uses to play Wahlberg (in the sense that he is an awkward exaggeration of how nice and sincere people behave). Wahlberg is a transniceual.

What kind of reductive tricks could you apply to Matt Damon? It seems like he might have OCD or an eating disorder but it's well hidden if he does.

Philip Nunez, Monday, 28 September 2009 17:09 (sixteen years ago)

This is kinda hard, I guess Mark Wahlberg's more charismatic and a better movie star, but on the other hand Damon is a better actor. Still, even though Wahlberg's been in some great movies, I can't remember a movie that would've been great mostly because of him (not that he's ruined any movie either, let's just say that he's smart enough to choose the sort of roles that play to his strengths), whereas I can't imagine The Talented Mr. Ripley being half as good without Damon's performance. That's like one of the top 10 ten performances of the last 10 years. So I gotta go for Damon.

Tuomas, Monday, 28 September 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

like more Damon movies (bourne rules) but wahlberg is hilarious and I think I like him better

Different strokes and so on, but I have the opposite view; and Huckabees is inconceivable without Wahlberg. As for TMR, he played what the director required, but it's such a grotesque misreading of the novel and character that I can't give him full credit (and there's scenes in that movie I like very much); he turned Ripley into River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho.

Little starbursts of joy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 28 September 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)

I've never read the novel, so I didn't care about any misreadings, I thought his performance was perfect as such, and the movie was so much better because of it. I love Alain Delon in general, but compared to Damon his performance in the same role felt kinda empty.

Tuomas, Monday, 28 September 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

"Huckabees is inconceivable without Wahlberg."

Except for one crucial part that is tailor-made for Wahlberg (and I agree he is awesome in delivering that one phrase and no one else can do it), Patton Oswalt could have done the rest of his scenes more credibly.

Philip Nunez, Monday, 28 September 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

Mark Wahlberg acting with the plant in the Happening shoulda got the plant an oscar.

hey I saw that movie once when it came out and was mostly only interested in Lily Tomlin so I don't remember a whole lot of it

man, motherfuck a paddington bear (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 28 September 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

All I can remember from Huckabees is Tomlin and Dustin Hoffman, and that they were ontological agents or something. I can't even remember who was the protagonist in that movie (it wasn't Wahlberg, was it?).

Tuomas, Monday, 28 September 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

the protagonist in that movie was ~~lyfe~~

fleetwood (max), Monday, 28 September 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

I think Wahlberg's part is getting overestimated here - he was billed like 5th or 6th and reading the plot synopsis it seems like his main role in the film was to a) introduce the villain and b) put out the fire at the end.

but again, I haven't seen it since it came out
