The answer is classic, of course, but what's your favourite Ritter Sport flavour?

White chocolate and lemon is exqusite! But you can't get those in Finland. :(

And it was actually white chocolate, lemon, and yoghurt. Kinda sad if they don't make it anymore, I've never tasted a chocolate quite like it.

I guess "Sommer Sorte" means it was only a temporary product.

The marzipan ones are rad. Like the nutty ones too. Pleased there is now an Aldi 10 minutes from my house as they sell the multipacks of minis, though I no longer have anywhere to buy the full-sized ones as the place I used to get them no longer stocks them.

When last in Germany I bought like 5 multipacks thinking they would be gifts for family (as I'd never seen them before then) and then ate them all myself. Om nom etc.

Spekulatius is a crunchy caramel bicuit, often given with coffee in the Benelux Countries. Speculoos is a chewy caramel waffle disc that you can balance on top of your coffee until it goes gooey in the warmth. Hagen Dasz did a speculoos flavour in the UK for a while and it was amazing.

In short I think spekulatius and speculoos are the same thing now.

Europe is an area of the world with several different countries and languages in it, and they all dig crunchy spicy caramel biscuits and have their own names for them.

Ritter search: cornflakes, anything with booze in it; destroy: mint, also any flavor that you buy for a long car trip and then forget until it is inedibly melted.

I've definitely had something lemon-related by ritter but I thought it was more like a lemon meringue type thing. I am going past the shop where I bought it yesterday so I shall have a look. In any case marzipan is my favourite. The white choc/nut one three from the bottom looks promising.

I would also just like to take this opportunity to defend the poor lonely butter biscuit against this vindictive defamation. I love butter biscuit in fact it's actually my favourite Ritter Sport. If the Germans cancel butter biscuit I blame YOU, Daniel Giraffe.

Has anyone wondered what makes it "Sport"? When I started eating these I always wondered if there was another, original model of Ritter that was somehow inconvenient, unwieldy, or non-portable.

According to the Ritter-sport site:

The chocolate square is launched. Clara Ritter’s proposal to produce a square chocolate bar quickly meets with agreement in the family. Her argument: “We’ll make a chocolate that fits into the pocket of every sports jacket, doesn’t break, and still weighs the same as a normal long bar of chocolate.” The chocolate square is named “Ritter’s Sport Chocolate”. Included in the assortment are long chocolate bars, pralines, and Easter and Christmas articles.

So yeah, apparently they did use to produce unwieldy chocolate, but I think these days they only do the "sport" variety.

Here was me thinking the sport referred to how fit and active you feel after consuming 100g of the stuff.

If the Germans do get rid of Butter Biscuit flavour (xxpost) I will accept full responsibility.

I always wondered about the "sport" too. I preferred to imagine television commercials featuring germanic athletes snapping into a chocolate bar on the sidelines the way you might see an american athlete downing a gatorade.

May I say how delighted I am that this is the German word for speculum btw

so I went to the Ritter Sport boutique in Berlin today & it ruled. in addition to having all the regular flavors (including many I've never seen before, pumped to try the peppermint btw) they had a bunch of special flavors like an orange marzipan (bought but haven't tried).

BUT they also have a thing where you can MAKE YOUR OWN Ritter Sport! like you pick from I dunno 50 flavors, like various breakfast cereals & nuts & candies & chili etc. & then they mix it with chocolate & pour it into a mold & cool it, all right in front while you wait & watch! I didn't have time to wait to do it, the line was looong, but it looked terrific.

I stopped at Fassbender & Rausch just a few blocks away & it was gorgeous too, with scale models of the Brandenberg Tor & the Alexanderplatz tv tower made out of chocolate. Lovely store.

I still long after the lemon yoghurt white chocolate Ritter Sport I had in Germany a few years ago, it was the best Ritter Sport ever... Apparently it was just a seasonal special flavour though, and it hasn't been sold in stores ever since. Maybe the boutique might still have it? If they do, I'm gonna buy like 50 pieces of it!

I didn't see that flavor. I bought a strawberry yogurt one, milk chocolate, but that's standard now. The other specials today, in addition to orange marzipan, were bourbon vanilla, cacaosplitter (dunno what that is), & Haselnuss Krokant (also not sure). I got those in a mini sampler pack.

I bought cornflakes ones for all my kids back home, haha. They're gonna love that.

This just in: Dark Choc w/ Espresso has an espresso *filling* and not espresso *beans*. First bite started awful bcz I was so caught off guard but once I took a few chews it was pretty great.

You take three bars in one hand and the other in the other and snap along the join. It just opens. I used to just tear or peel back, just like with most packaging... until today, when the aforementioned German spotted me and gave me a tutorial.

I'm sitting in an apt in Berlin eating the tortilla chip one and this might be the best Ritter Sport of them all. It is everything I wanted the cornflakes one to be that it wasn't (the corn flavor really comes through instead of just being a flavorless crunch) and it is EXTRA crunchy!!!

went to Germany briefly last week and so finally found the tortilla ones. I like them! they're like the cornflakes ones but grittier. the Olympia is interesting too, honey+yogurt+crispy biscuit, but I think the chocolate overpowers the honey/yogurt combo a bit too much.

my kids now want me to book us a weekend in Berlin to go to the store, maybe this fall.

Olympia was always the best. Yes honey and tiny almond pieces. I was only ever able to get it when in Germany though, never in the UK.

Totally overrated imo - the chocolate overwhelms the other delicate flavored. Caramel nut has lots of filling, good balance and nice texture

They also have some (Olympia) at this German grocery stand in the big food market in Philly!! I bet they could get caramel nut too if I asked

I don't know which Britisher sweets are available where you live but maybe Jelly Babies.

Things adult expats have asked me to bring/send over include Maltesers (chocolate-coated malt balls, p good) and Curly-Wurly bars (never particularly liked these myself).

I suppose someone with kids would have a more useful perspective than mine. At Halloween I offered a big bowl of mixed sweets to the neighbours' kids, who are approx 5 and 7, and I can report that they took some Haribo (not British obv) and Cadbury's Buttons (probably available in other countries).

oops. About 6 years ago I was working near a Haribo factory somewhere in Castleford and thought they were British.

buttons, flakes, fudges and crunchies all seem to be popular imports. things like boost, toffee crisp, topic, lion bar have no direct equivalents. malteasers are like whoppers but approx 1000000x better so they are always a good shout too. marks & spencer has some fun and p decent alternatives to regular store sweets.

last time i was back i went to an olde timey sweet shoppe and got some classics like rhubarb & custards that were surprisingly well received

using milk choc makes it sickly sweet with the honey and the almonds arent really salty enuff to differentiate it from a cadburys whole nut

The local Costcutter sells a range of RS next to a few Ulker bars but the latter destroy all choc throne pretenders frankly. Distressingly low stocks lately though - I blame Erdogan.

I'm pretty down on RS at the moment. They seem to have dysfunctional imagination as to what people actually want: White Cinnamon Crisp was a new low, as are the rash of bizarre fruit/yogurt-type fillings over the past couple of years. I seem to recall a raspberry yogurt with dried mint (?!) that was quite unpleasant.

Over the past couple of years here in Canada, Milka bars have become more common and I've been buying those instead. They simply seem to make more palatable flavours people really want.

My German teacher brought back a box of white Ritter minis last time she visited and it included a "Latte Macchiato" flavour, creamy coffee flavour in white chocolate, which I would v much like to buy as a full-size square or single-flavour box but it seems to only exist as part of this "Schokowürfel weiß" variety pack which isn't even being produced any more. Anyone seen it in any other format?

Also yeah there are way too many yogurt flavours which are not nice but I assume the Germans must like them since they keep bringing more out.

The other summer limited edition, Cocoa-Creme, (which is called something that translates to Cocoa Creme Float in German) is very good.

This new-ish Caramel Mousse is looking good. According to the website, you simply mousse try it.

I did, yesterday. It's a little boring; I think milk chocolate plus caramel is a little sweet. There were crunchy cookie bits in there that added texture, but I wish they were salty or the chocolate were dark. I don't think you'd have to be a weirdo to love it, it's just not for me.

I went to Germany last week and brought back a big score of these, including pink grapefruit (haven't tried it yet) and several other new flavors. I just ate the eiskakao-creme & it was disappointing---the taste is really just sweet, with a watered-down chocolate taste. everyone in my family bought 10 each so the checker at the store laughed at us (was just an Edeka in Freiburg, not a big tourist place).

So every year I buy the new edition Ritters at Christmas time and take a picture of them and share them with friends and so forth.

For the 2017-18 season here in Canada it appears we got one net new bar, it's called "Spekulatius." I showed it to my wife and she said "That sounds like a visit to the gynecologist."

It tastes like some sort of dry cinnamon/gingerbread cookie with extremely sweet chocolate. Wtf is spekulatius.

Yeah Speculoos is an important flavor in Europe, common in ice cream etc. Sorta like gingerbread but lighter. They sell a spread for bread made out of speculoos cookies, like Nutella, so you’re putting cookies on your bread. It rules.

Holy shit, I was walking by a candy shop today and they had something called "Biscuit Spread" in the window. So now I know what that is. I'm not sure I'd want a whole jar?

went to a sausage market because i saw a swabian spaetzle recipe that said to serve with something called "saitanwurst". it was only after i got there and faced a befuddled sausage specialist that i googled it and found out that "saitanwurst" is, for reasons unknown to me, what the swabians call vienna sausage.

but! they also had a decent array of ritter sport. i finally got one of the knusperflakes to try (it's a standard but i have had the hardest time getting past dark chocolate marzipan..) i also got haferkeks and joghurt, which the package says is a fruhlings-spezialitat but i don't even care, it sounds yum, dark chocolate with almond and orange, and milk chocolate with cocoa mousse filling. i will try to remember to update.

The coconut ones are Bounties with notions but are very good especially if kept in the fridge

We had a box of mini Ritters that’s running out this week...idk, I didn’t care for the cornflake one at all? Hazelnut and coconut are still my favourites.

every rittersport is beautiful (although i haven't tried the cornflake one i must admit)

I think you have to say the "r" in the middle for it to be a German accent. "Rittehshport" sounds like the way I pronounce German, and I generally get told I speak it with a French accent.

@Lily Dale: They used to include gianduja paste in so many of their flavors but they stopped a year or so ago. It was a big deal in my Nutella Addict Anonymous group.

Dark chocolate marbled with high-quality milk chocolate is the best thing because you get the flavor of the dark and the meltiness of the milk chocolate. Sometimes I make mendiants that are half dark, half milk - you just do two swooshes with the back of a spoon and make a little yin-yang symbol on parchment paper.

there are a few vegan ones out at the moment - 'milk' chocolate with sesame, dark chocolate with almond and quinoa, dark chocolate with hazelnut and amaranth. sesame one is probably good though likely very sweet, but c'mon why they gotta make all the vegan stuff so weird?

Orange chocolate is okay-ish, and sea salt does indeed make dark chocolate more palatable. Mint chocolate is an abomination, however. Deep within your heart of hearts, you know this to be true.
