Yeah, I know the title doesn't go with the number. It's still better than yours. Damn right.

Tough. It's named now and that's it.

I managed to clean the funk from my head with some Duran Duran. Ha ha. I have escaped your evil plans, Kerr.

See, you all howled and wanted a new thread, and I thought you'd be so happy you'd throw a 1920s free jazz party or something - but nooooo. Where is my 1920s wild jazz party now? Huh?

You are just taking the piss now, using this as an excuse to bang on about jazz on this thread.

Now you must post a pic of a current Kate lust object in order to attone for your transgression.

I read this as a very strong recommendation -- that he was able to get through to the person doing the listening, despite all the faults in production. Like the assertion that great fiction simply translates to whatever language.

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 09:49 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, you seem to be new around these parts. Jazz discussion is VERBOTEN on Watercooler threads UNLESS the post is accompanied by pictures of my current lust objects.

Yes, I know there's lots of strange rules on these threads, but it's kind of A THING.

that said...

I read this as a very strong recommendation -- that he was able to get through to the person doing the listening, despite all the faults in production. Like the assertion that great fiction simply translates to whatever language.

Is this true, though? Or is it something more due to reputation? Clumbsy production really can make things unlistenable to me *unless* I've been primed to already think of the substance as being great.

I often think about this in going back to records of bands I loved back in the 80s, when everything had that terrible chorusy sound. For instance, Throwing Muses The Real Ramona - which I love as a collection of songs, but the production is really distracting and I don't think I'd give it much of a chance these days if I hadn't already been predisposed to love TM from their earlier material.

(though perhaps I'm agreeing with you, because the songcraft on that album is outstanding, and shines through the terrible 80s production.)

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 09:56 (fifteen years ago)

Right, I'm so bored, I'm actually going to write some SQL views to translate those awful BLOB fields to VARCHAR.

I've got the new Annie album and I'm going to listen to it. Hurrah.

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 10:05 (fifteen years ago)

A good hook will get itself heard no matter what it has been decorated with (if we take production to mean decoration, which I guess isn't however I have been always somewhat 'deaf' to the whole issue of production; but on discussion of it I see its role as overevaluated when its talked about as obscuring quality) xp

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 10:17 (fifteen years ago)

Production is WAY more than just decoration. The way that a sound is recorded can utterly change the whole quality of that sound. Doing this well can lend a whole new dimension to a piece of music - doing it badly can reduce something amazing to a 2-dimensional cardboard box.

Thing is, someone who's not aware as to what exactly production is or does will not know what's wrong with the piece, they'll just say that it sounds "flat" or "boring" or "lifeless". Bad production can suck the energy out of a piece, destroy the emotional mood.

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 10:20 (fifteen years ago)

I think Kate should go listen to that album with Milford Grave's drumming.

I know, Julio! But I'm not though! I remember Brian Eno saying something about how a lot of avant-garde stuff just sounds shitty and sloppy, often on purpose it seems, it makes it more real, man, I suppose ... something like that anyway, I'm paraphrasing like mad... and I don't see the point in any of that. If something's good I want to at least be able to hear it!

*Ouch*

Hi Kate.

Actually what got me to look at the thread was that I liked the title of it.

But I'm not though! I remember Brian Eno saying something about how a lot of avant-garde stuff just sounds shitty and sloppy, often on purpose it seems, it makes it more real, man, I suppose

I like Eno but I wouldn't exactly trust him (or anyone) with that assertion; when the technique seems to have been so labouriously worked over a number of years it doesn't make sense to present it badly in a recording of it? The likelyhood is that the conditions under which this stuff was recorded weren't exactly ideal - not that I'd use that as an excuse.

I guess I can tell a scratchy recording from a good one, I shouldn't have said that - but I think enough can be transmitted through.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 22 October 2009 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

Ha ha, OK, the title comes from one of Anna's t-shirts. Which has got the most hits of anything I've posted on Flickr in the past few months, it does crack me up.

Strawberry Letter 22 (Masonic Boom), Thursday, 22 October 2009 09:53 (fifteen years ago)

The likelyhood is that the conditions under which this stuff was recorded weren't exactly ideal - not that I'd use that as an excuse

I would use that as an excuse. On other occasions, like "Lick My Decals Off" (that old chestnut), it's just sheer incompetence.

The Prince's choice: making a brush. (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 October 2009 09:58 (fifteen years ago)

hello all, I like the thread title.

I often find shoddy production to be a real barrier to listening, perhaps because I am technically minded and can hear the fuckups. Worse though is inappropriate production, too bright and sparkly for a dark and moody or aggressive band seems to be a common crime. (too slow wrt live performance often seems to be inflicted from behind the glass as well).

Less excusable on my part is my reluctance to listen to old crackly recordings. I'm sure I miss out on a lot of great folk and blues from old Smithsonian recordings and the like because I can't listen to a whole disc of gramophone crackle and early tape hiss.

SO I was in Chicago last weekend and had a hire car, it had satellite radio which gave me the rather surreal opportunity to drive down the Kennedy Expressway listening to Annie Mac on Radio 1:

I really like this track, now:

http://www.noiseporn.com/2009/10/27/la-roux-2/

electronic music in the UK seems to have got really interesting again.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:33 (fifteen years ago)

You are NOT linking to a LaRoux song, are you? Fie, Ed.

The Paisley (shop) Window Pane (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:35 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, Boy 8-Bit mix. OK. I nearly had a heart attack for a minute there.

The Paisley (shop) Window Pane (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:36 (fifteen years ago)

The Paisley (shop) Window Pane (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

The vocal I can take or leave, as with most vocals on electronic tracks.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

Also, Norris mix is v.v. good. I have to drive to DC this weekend and I think it will earn me a speeding ticket.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

Norris has the TOUCH OF WONDERMENT. I'm trying to build up the courage to ask him if he would have the slightest bit of interest in remixing us, and ifso, what his fee is. Coz, like those Time & Space Machine remixes are +++ superpsychedelic to the point where I'm realising that a lot of the wibble in BTWS remixes that I like is actually down to him. Except he probably doesn't have time with the whole new Grid album thing and he probably wouldnt' be interested in doing it anyway.

The Paisley (shop) Window Pane (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

Worth an ask in my book, especially if the expected result is no with good reasons.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

This may well deserve a thread of its own but what would consider to be the garage/psych standards? I'm thinking things that have passed from being things that get seen as covers to things where the song is more famous than any particular version.

I'm thinking

Louie Louie
Gloria

but what else?

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

hey joe
wild thing

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

Meaning stuff that was a standard back in the 60s, or stuff that's a garage/psych standard now?

If the former, "I'm A Man" and, erm, there's another blues song that they all had a crack at that escapes me right now.

The Paisley (shop) Window Pane (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 15:56 (fifteen years ago)

NO NO NO NO NOOOO I can NOT be getting sick. I'm DJing at Sonic Cathedral tonight (and FINALLY winning the competition with Farmer Brown) and I can NOT be ill.

The Paisley (shop) Window Pane (Masonic Boom), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

I thought Farmer Brown had been defeated a long time ago.

I'm thinking more of in the 60s/70s, I feel that associations with a particular version are stronger now than back then.

Other Ideas:

The Witch
Fade Away (less sure about this one, other versions may count as Stones Covers)

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 16:08 (fifteen years ago)

I've never played Sonic Cathedral before tonight! This will be my first time!

Which song "The Witch" do you mean? I know 3 or 4 different songs with that title, but they're not covers.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE I've failed to bring any Chapterhouse with me. I'll go for Falling Down over Pearl, though. Pearl is played out.

Whoa, the most exciting thing in years happened on Streatham high street this morning. A car drove into the window of New Look. All the traffic ground to a halt so everyone who was waiting for the bus gathered and rubbernecked as they pulled it out. The police told us to stand back because there might be a CASCADE OF GLASS which we all wanted to see. But it just pulled out with no damage.

Still. It was the most exciting thing since those dudes got shot at the ice rink a few years ago.

Paging Suzy - sorry, can't find yr email and this won't fit in 160 characters.

Things got really weird last night. We ended up having to pull a midnight runner from the hotel. (after a really boring but insane Hoxton rave in a parking garage, argh, I'm too old for this shit.) Anyway, Dara is at mine now. Still sleeping at the moment. I actually have a pre-existing lunch date, but I've given her your mobile number and told her to call you when she wakes up. Maybe see you later?

My flat (AKA "sickbay" for the past 10 days but not now) is spotless and over the course of being ill last week, I lost about 3 kilos. BTW there's nothing more vile in the cough medicine department than Actifed for chesty coughs - I almost heave after each 10ml dose because it tastes like pure poison. Robitussin definitely tastes nicer.

The Paisley (shop) Window Pane (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 3 November 2009 11:14 (fifteen years ago)

Beeechams/Lemsip-type drinks make me feel very nauseous - I have no idea why. Instead, I take a paracetamol and make a puree of garlic, ginger, one hot chili and lemon juice. Added (with one tsp of sugar) to hot water, this seems not to set me off as badly. A hippie I know brought me some Sambucol, which is elderberry-based immune system happytime elixir. It's what I take when I can't face the Actifed syrup, but it's £9 for a Robobottle when Robo is £3.

Yesterday in getting my clean bill of YOU DIDN'T HAVE THE OINK from the doctor, he informed me that catarrh is a combination of pus and dead white blood cells and tried not to laugh as I piped up with 'remember how I said that nausea was not part of this cold? Somehow that just changed...'

OK, someone has just opened a new moneyspinner at the top of Regent Street. Takeaway called "LEBANEATS" two blocks from my office that sells Muhumara (aka Anatolian Breakfast), hallumi, foul mesdammes, Batinjan Rahib - I am just going to set up a direct debit emptying my paycheque in there so they can make me nommy nommy foods for lunch.

No, it's actually WORSE than that.

Like his hair... it's really really bad. He cut it all off. And not even coz he was going bald. Just bad short hair. It SO doesn't suit him.

(and it's more like 20 years ago now, Ed... yikes)

The proportion of boys being 1) ginger and 2) pointy-nosed is higher in Northern Ireland than just about anywhere else in the world. However, I got so excited about it, they're now not sending me. Bah.

Oh noes, piggy pox. My comiserations!

Today is going to be a good day. I've got Expert Knob Twiddlers blasting on the headphone, I've cleared a couple of hours for playing with the new version of Crystal and I'm really looking forward to it - but I JUST KNOW - this is when some stupid user is gonna call up with "I has this stupid problem...." that will take 2 days to fix. :-(

We're supposed to be going up north this weekend, but as one grandparent has diabetes, it may not be on.

Mark G, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 11:19 (fifteen years ago)

I was out cold for nearly a week. I mean, I thought I felt better after about 3 or 4 days, but when I started to feel better, I tried to get up and had to just lie down again. It wasn't even the main flu that was so bad, but the recuperation period is a bitch.

I'm so confused. I'm talking about Rayleigh Scattering, Asobi Seksu and Aphex Twin tentacle sex in 3 different windows and I hope I'm getting the right answer in the right box. Or this could get really interesting.

TODAY'S CUET GINGER:

http://userserve-ak.last.fm/serve/_/5081014/Aphex+Twin+Richard+and+his+blue+sweater.jpg

gargargharrgggh

Today I plunged back into Godel Escher Bach - I left off at the end of the first part and decided to give my brain a rest before part 2. I have to be careful reading it on the bus so I don't miss my stop. Or, the other problem is, I have to stop every few paragraphs because something he says will make me think about something else, and that will lead on into some labyrinthine tangle of thoughts from which I can't escape for ages, and when I get back to the book, I have completely lost my place and have to go back to the beginning of the page again.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 20 November 2009 13:20 (fifteen years ago)

GINGERBREAD MAN ARRGGGHHH OMNOMNOMNOMNOM

As I was coming back from John Lewis (and I only narrowly managed to avoid buying Duchy Originals Ginger Stem Chocolate cookies because I was alreayd buying Gu Millionaires Flapjacks) I had the idea floating around in my head that there should be like, easter bunnies, but instead of rabbits made of chocolate, like, little RDJs made of chocolate.

But a GINGERBREAD RDJ would be the BEST! THING! EVAH! damn, I wish I had an oven.

I want to make a gingerbread mansion again and fill it with gingerbread RDJs.

Cosmic Dentistry (Masonic Boom), Friday, 20 November 2009 13:28 (fifteen years ago)
