stupid fucking cops wouldn't let me stand near them, so I had to stand with the counter protesters
What you need is a sign that says GODS HATES FAGS so you can get in amongst them but make it like those paper things we used to make at school where you cut into the paper and so when you move the paper it changes (is this making any sense?) and so instead of FAGS you could have PHELPS or instead of HATES have LOVES. I have no idea of how to do this practically. Maybe just a flip down bit would be easier.

Not sure.
he Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that the First Amendment protects fundamentalist church members who mount attention-getting, anti-gay protests outside military funerals. The court voted 8-1 in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan. The decision upheld an appeals court ruling that threw out a $5 million judgment to the father of a dead Marine who sued church members after they picketed his son's funeral.Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the opinion for the court. Justice Samuel Alito dissented."What Westboro said, in the whole context of how and where it chose to say it, is entitled to 'special protection' under the First Amendment," Roberts wrote, "and that protection cannot be overcome by a jury finding that the picketing was outrageous."

On the whole, I concur. They have as much right as anybody to express their (asshole) opinions and the very idea of a tort of 'intentional infliction of mental anguish' is a dangerous slippery slope; it would just empower people to be exceptionally prickly about every- and anything and to seek every pretext to take offense.
I wish horrible things on the Westboro ppl, sadly, so that I can later ascribe it to God's wrath at whatever sins they are committing.

Summary of key findings via NYT
Chief Justice Roberts wrote in the ruling that three factors required a ruling in favor of the church group. First, he said, its speech was on matters of public concern. While the messages on the signs carried by its members “may fall short of refined commentary,” the chief justice wrote, “the issues they highlight — the political and moral conduct of the United States and its citizens, the fate of our nation, homosexuality in the military and scandals involving the Catholic clergy — are matters of public import.”Second, he wrote, the relationship between the church and the Snyders was not a private grudge.Third, the members of the church “had the right to be where they were.” They were picketing on a public street 1,000 feet from the site of the funeral, they complied with the law and with instructions from the police, and they protested quietly and without violence.Chief Justice Roberts suggested that the proper response to hurtful protests are general laws creating buffer zones around funerals and the like, rather than empowering of juries to punish unpopular speech. The opinion acknowledged that “Westboro’s choice added to Mr. Snyder’s already incalculable grief” and emphasized that the ruling was narrow and limited to the kinds of protests staged by the church.Justice Stephen G. Breyer joined the majority opinion but wrote separately to say that other sorts of speech, including television broadcasts and Internet postings, might warrant different treatment.

I read this news yesterday and instantly felt bad.I understand what Michael says upthread, but I can't help to think this is where an idealistic and abstract view of personal liberties clashes against the concrete and practical, mutual relationships that underlie the life of every community.

Ugh i made the mistake of reading statements by the WBC. Rage levels through the roof @ these people.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 16 December 2012 19:50 (twelve years ago)
I keep seeing "Nobody can do anything at these protests because they just sue". How can they get away with this? Free speech?
I don't really buy it, aren't some forms of hate-speech considered dangerous to the public? Like, i can't run around in a movie theater shouting "Fire!". If Muslim Jihadists were pulling this same trick, would they get the "Oh you can protest away, and anyone that interferes can be sued" treatment?
Feel like they are tolerated because conservative politicians favor their anti-gay message.

The WBC is considered a nonprofit organization by the federal government, and is therefore exempt from paying taxes.

However tempting it may be to make martyrs of these detestable people by taking revenge upon them through the agency of this info, if you wish to preserve your intergrity the only safe form of using this would involve somehow making them feel ridiculous. With humorless fanatics that is almost an impossible dream.
― Aimless, Monday, 17 December 2012 05:45 (twelve years ago)
Well, that's the real trick, now, innit? It's like the only effective tactic against fuckheads like these would be the one employed by everyone from Mark Twain to James T. Kirk, and that's laughter. Open mockery. Get somebody to the level of Chris Rock in his prime to go and bust on them.
Louis Theroux was barely able to crack an opening by pure empathy in relating to one of the (grand?)daughters a few years back, too.

someone could correct me but i doubt any conservative politician wants to be publicly aligned with the group that's most famous for protesting troop funerals

The "they are all-powerful lawyers and sue everyone" thing is a myth. They've successfully sued like twice in 20 years.

Yeah maybe you are right. At least they aren't OWS, so they don't pose a real threat. ;-)

Like him or not, I kinda liked Kevin Smith's response to these assclowns. They were following him across the country because of his Red State flick, so he just organized a massive counterprotest at each stop that dwarfed the WBC contingency.

Although I do think a lot of people sharing this around thinking it's jolly funny japes are probably just seeing an insult to Fred Phelps, without noticing it's actually an innocent woman's grave that's being 'messed with'.
― cardamon, Sunday, 21 July 2013 13:32 (twelve years ago)
true but if that's your default reaction to someone's grave being messed with then you're a bit of a dick imo

or some things matter. but getting annoyed about this, even slightly, is a waste of emotional energy.
― Treeship, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)
Sure. This is why I put 'messed with' in quote marks - sexy goings on next to a grave and then published on the internet with the aim of attacking relatives of the person in the grave certainly isn't the same as pushing stones over, but the intent was to do symbolic violence. Erm, like the WBC turning up at funerals.
So if we say 'this doesn't matter' we have to say 'WBC funeral protests don't matter' too; unless it matters a lot that they did it first or do it on a grander scale.
But these were people who don't normally say horrible things, that's why it was (not 'shocking' but) striking.
but getting annoyed about this, even slightly, is a waste of emotional energy.
Hmmm I don't have finite reserves of emotional energy which I 'spend' on different things – doesn't seem to work like that in my experience - and anyway, ethical critique doesn't require this.

― Selena Gomez is very Neotenous for Caucasoids (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:26 (twelve years ago)
I disagree. Disrupting someone's mourning right after a loved one's death is very different from disrespecting a gravesite years after the death, with no-one else around. I'm agnostic and take a dim view of religion in general, but I still pull over for funeral processions and stop working in the yard when one goes by. Grieving after a death is a separate thing from whatever dispensation of a corpse one's religion requires. Westboro goes way over the line on this front.
― schlock corridor (WilliamC), Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)
I'm not going to have a gravesite, but if I were going to, I wouldn't care if anyone wants to go pee on it after the funeral is over and everyone has gone home.
― schlock corridor (WilliamC), Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)
Would you piss on someone else's gravestone, though, now, as a living person?
― cardamon, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:49 (twelve years ago)
well it'd be hard to as a dead person
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)
WilliamC otm. This protest seems less like a protest and more like an attempt to get some cool pictures for the members' instagrams. Westboro protests seem to be about a general hatred that is faceless and intrudes on public space and demands to be heard. This one is basically some cool edgy selfies.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:51 (twelve years ago)
Other stuff to think about:
- The idea of 'turning someone gay'. Sounds creepy to me – not the 'gay' part but the 'turning' part, whether you're turning someone gay or straight or whatever.
– Standing man holds the heads of two kneeling women in photo of lesbian pink mass
– The Gay and the Satanic, two great categories that taste great together (and whose conceptual combination in the public mind has no ill-effects for anyone ever)

― cardamon, Sunday, July 21, 2013 10:49 AM (2 minutes ago)
I might, though it seems like a bit too much work. I can't think of anyone I've nursed enough of a grudge against for pissing. A gob of spit, maybe. But I'd never do it at the funeral, or even speak out against the deceased at the time.
― schlock corridor (WilliamC), Sunday, 21 July 2013 15:58 (twelve years ago)

― Neanderthal, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:00 (twelve years ago)
Btway all this 'Well heck, I wouldn't care if someone set up a rodeo bull machine on my grave and charged 10 cents a go' talk is very reflective and mature but ignores
a) it's not actually your grave or your beliefs about your grave or your culture's beliefs about your grave that are at stake in this instance – it's someone else (dead) who might think differently, and it's another culture (living people) who might think differently
b) of course you don't care what happens to your body/grave after you're dead, because then you're dead. Which unfortunately means if you pull that line you can also apply it to all dead people, including victims of lynchings with people standing around eating peanuts, or people being turned into animal feed or lampshades
― cardamon, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:01 (twelve years ago)
If I was given the opportunity and a guarantee I wouldn't get caught, I'd piss on Thatcher's grave no problem. Also I'm not entirely sure I *haven't* needed to piss while drinking in a graveyard. </goth>
OH FFS, dude.
― emil.y, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)
i'm generally opposed to grave pissing. i take a relatively hard line, tempered slightly by hesitant adverbs.
― Treeship, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)
I do actually agree with this, though.
― emil.y, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)
Also there's an established trope of protest movements ending up getting to the point where they're committing full scale grave desecration: this happened with some hunt saboteurs and animal rights activists in the UK ... I really don't want to see opposition to the WBC go down this route.
― cardamon, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)
emil.y, you didn't think there was something a bit off about the relative postures in the photo of the lesbian part of the ceremony? That was my issue there, not the genders of people kissing.
― cardamon, Sunday, 21 July 2013 16:06 (twelve years ago)
The photo was different but the posture was exactly the same as the men. This totally smacks of concern trolling right now.

― Treeship, Sunday, 16 March 2014 15:04 (eleven years ago)
I don't need to see any direct impact to wish that a man who spent most of his life protesting my existence to die in the middle of nowhere in the Arctic than in a hospice.
― Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Sunday, 16 March 2014 15:37 (eleven years ago)
I think the majority of the Westboro congregation consists of Phelpses or Phelps associates, so it's not like they even recruited membership from afar. It's just one bonkers family with a modest advertising budget and frequent flyer miles. That doesn't mean they aren't all reprehensible scumfucks—pretty much everyone everywhere hates them—but the actual damage they do is rather minimal.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 16 March 2014 15:43 (eleven years ago)
yeah, fair enough murgatroid. i just don't want to give phelps any more credit than he's due. he was always just a hateful sideshow, never a formidable enemy. xp
― Treeship, Sunday, 16 March 2014 15:50 (eleven years ago)
i hope he finds peace and love in the eternal kingdom of god
― Hungry4Ass, Sunday, 16 March 2014 15:52 (eleven years ago)
His God is an awesome GodHates fags in Heaven above
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 16 March 2014 15:53 (eleven years ago)
JF otm though. though I definitely applaud those who counter protest their protests when they protest things like funerals, because those can bring anguish to the families, WBC is definitely a group that has few supporters, so the constant 'lashouts' on social media etc are exactly what they're looking for, and they feed off of the attention.
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 16 March 2014 15:56 (eleven years ago)
Fb wall filled with sanctimonious posts about this today...on both sides.
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 16 March 2014 20:08 (eleven years ago)
He did some really good work for civil rights in the 60s and 70s. Y'know, credit where credit is due.
― Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 16 March 2014 20:27 (eleven years ago)
i don't care too much about the WBC but let's not pretend that their views on LGBTQ ppl are marginal (or the reason that they're universally reviled). ppl who are just as hateful, if more civil, to queer ppl are routinely invited to voice their opinions in the mainstream media, elected to office, etc.anyway it seems kind of weird ("weird") for anyone in this thread to be like "not worth caring about, how much damage have they ever even done" if they've never had e.g. the experience of being a closeted preteen discovering godhatesfags.com, and in particular the "how many days has matthew shephard been in hell" counter, for the first time
― 1staethyr, Sunday, 16 March 2014 21:24 (eleven years ago)
I highly doubt anybody was suggesting that their message isn't harmful (though while I would definitely acknowledge these people extend beyond the Phelps, I would argue that you overestimate the population of the "god hates fags" crew). just putting their presence in perspective. going to a WBC protest and counter-protesting has value, in that it also provides some comfort to the grieving families or whichever group they're protesting. making noise on social media seems rather pointless.
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:15 (eleven years ago)
soooooo...... What's going to happen at HIS funeral?
― StanM, Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:17 (eleven years ago)
nothing.
(btw, I will not even front like I'll get no joy from his death. I don't mean ticker tape parades obv but I'll be happy at least to know he's up out.)
― Neanderthal, Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:18 (eleven years ago)
Yeah, I definitely have some sense of relief and satisfaction knowing this old fuck will soon be worm food, but celebrating it puts me on his level.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:21 (eleven years ago)
clearly it doesnt tho

Alright then! FUCK YES FRED PHELPS WILL DIE HOORAY
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:23 (eleven years ago)
Nope, that felt pretty crappy.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:24 (eleven years ago)
sometimes i feel like fred phelps is just a front designed to draw attention away from the real evil powers that actually do bad stuff. like the RNC is slipping them checks so jamie dimon can sup upon poached infant brains in a sauce of working class tears without anyone bothering him.
― adam, Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:32 (eleven years ago)

― Eric H., Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:33 (eleven years ago)
GODHATESPHELPS
Nope, didn't feel anything.
― StanM, Sunday, 16 March 2014 23:33 (eleven years ago)
Stories from his excommunicated/fled kids (Nate, I think?) put it a bit differently, saying that he saw civil rights legislation as nothing more than a litigation goldmine and referred to his clients with racist slurs at home. He might have gotten some good, important work done in the process, but there are enough trustworthy accounts out there for me to believe he's always been a piece of shit.

― gbx, Monday, 17 March 2014 00:50 (eleven years ago)
the only reason WBC didn't gain more mainstream support was bc of their hatred of the US military: conservative americans' top two hates might be gays and abortions but their number one love is the almighty military.

lol some people
seriously how evil does someone have to be to be exempted from the inevitable tut-tutting backlash
not that i want to relive thatchermania '13 but dude's only purpose in life was locating people at the the worst moments of their lives and making things worse for them in the name of homophobia
he's 84 years old, he's lived longer and wealthier than the majority of people, he's lived infinitely longer than he's had any right to and he's dying more peacefully than 99% of the people whose funerals he picketed. the celebration of his peaceful, not-even-painfully-murderedy death doesn't really seem like an issue that matters
― linda cardellini (zachlyon), Monday, 17 March 2014 01:41 (eleven years ago)
Xpost you done goalpost moving/stat inventing? Christ...
Also no its not sad that this fuck is dying.
― Neanderthal, Monday, 17 March 2014 01:45 (eleven years ago)
Like ill never defend people who discourage or frown on homosexuality but as misguided as those morons are they dont all fall in the "picket funeral/god hates fags" shit. I am a big LGBT supporter so no need foe condescension.

no one's trying to force you to feel a certain way about anything maybe just don't guilt people for responding in their way ?
― linda cardellini (zachlyon), Monday, 17 March 2014 01:57 (eleven years ago)
and not that it's relevant but his remaining family seems pretty split between trolls who want the world to celebrate his death (it's literally always been them vs every single other person or entity) and the dissenters who understand why people would celebrate
― linda cardellini (zachlyon), Monday, 17 March 2014 02:00 (eleven years ago)
anyway i don't accept that there's a meaningful distinction between "god hates fags" and "homosexuality should be discouraged in society", obviously 1 in 3 americans aren't picketing gay funerals but lol i never said that
― 1staethyr, Monday, 17 March 2014 02:03 (eleven years ago)
otm and yeah, maybe not picketing gay funerals but certainly trying to legislate it so they never have to interact with actual gay people
― just1n3, Monday, 17 March 2014 03:39 (eleven years ago)
any pleasure i'm getting is out him being excommunicated, that he'll die w/ the possibility planted in his head that he's going to hell or the certainty that his children are.
― balls, Monday, 17 March 2014 03:50 (eleven years ago)
out of him rather
Can't wait for the inevitable #longread that will explain his excommunication.
― Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Monday, 17 March 2014 04:30 (eleven years ago)
do we know the bare outlines of the story of his excommunication? it seems weird.
― Treeship, Monday, 17 March 2014 04:36 (eleven years ago)
i guess it doesn't matter. it might make for a good allegory about how ravenously persecutorial movements always turn against their leaders in the end.
― Treeship, Monday, 17 March 2014 04:37 (eleven years ago)
I don't think anyone even knew about it until his son mentioned yesterday, but I could be wrong.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 17 March 2014 04:58 (eleven years ago)
what backlash do you speak of? i was expressing my opinion, that the end of a man's life is a sad event. feels odd, and oddly purposeless, for me to cheer it. but everything has their own reactions and i wasn't passing judgment on them.

Evil is even, truth is an odd number, and death is a full stop
i ain't against anybody saying "I can't cheer his death", but like with the Osama dealio, I get tired of the sanctimonious "I hope that NONE OF MY FRIENDS will take pride in a person's death". fuck that - not all life is sacred, there are some people we're better off without. like it's a small minority of evil fuckers and one need not act like they're at a World Cup match or anything but hell is it that surprising that people itt are being all "good riddance"? guy has no redeeming qualities and was a hatemonger, fuck him.
― Neanderthal, Monday, 17 March 2014 15:39 (eleven years ago)
Re: a figure like Thatcher, I suppose one could muster a defense of her on semi-legit grounds, disagree though I and many may or do. But this guy, or Bin Laden? Nah, fuck them. They brought nothing but misery in the most miserable, and elective, and selfish, way. Defending them even in the most even-handed dead-is-sad way is like defending cancer. There are no grounds for a defense.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 17 March 2014 16:47 (eleven years ago)
Maybe you could appreciate that this guy probably has done more for spurring pro-gay rights stuff and anti-bigotry by just being a huge, evil, easy target that everyone hates.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 17 March 2014 17:12 (eleven years ago)
Um, that's one way to look at it.
Tbh, he's gone so far beyond the pale that I'm not even sure how much support he gets from the anti-gay community, especially since Phelps no doubt thought most of them were going to hell, too.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 17 March 2014 17:22 (eleven years ago)
