What you need is a sign that says GODS HATES FAGS so you can get in amongst them but make it like those paper things we used to make at school where you cut into the paper and so when you move the paper it changes (is this making any sense?) and so instead of FAGS you could have PHELPS or instead of HATES have LOVES. I have no idea of how to do this practically. Maybe just a flip down bit would be easier.

Supreme Court just ruled that Westboro can protest military funerals.

he Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that the First Amendment protects fundamentalist church members who mount attention-getting, anti-gay protests outside military funerals.

The court voted 8-1 in favor of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan. The decision upheld an appeals court ruling that threw out a $5 million judgment to the father of a dead Marine who sued church members after they picketed his son's funeral.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the opinion for the court. Justice Samuel Alito dissented.

"What Westboro said, in the whole context of how and where it chose to say it, is entitled to 'special protection' under the First Amendment," Roberts wrote, "and that protection cannot be overcome by a jury finding that the picketing was outrageous."

They have as much right as anybody to express their (asshole) opinions and the very idea of a tort of 'intentional infliction of mental anguish' is a dangerous slippery slope; it would just empower people to be exceptionally prickly about every- and anything and to seek every pretext to take offense.

I wish horrible things on the Westboro ppl, sadly, so that I can later ascribe it to God's wrath at whatever sins they are committing.

Summary of key findings via NYT

Third, the members of the church “had the right to be where they were.” They were picketing on a public street 1,000 feet from the site of the funeral, they complied with the law and with instructions from the police, and they protested quietly and without violence.

Chief Justice Roberts suggested that the proper response to hurtful protests are general laws creating buffer zones around funerals and the like, rather than empowering of juries to punish unpopular speech.

The opinion acknowledged that “Westboro’s choice added to Mr. Snyder’s already incalculable grief” and emphasized that the ruling was narrow and limited to the kinds of protests staged by the church.

Justice Stephen G. Breyer joined the majority opinion but wrote separately to say that other sorts of speech, including television broadcasts and Internet postings, might warrant different treatment.

Ugh i made the mistake of reading statements by the WBC. Rage levels through the roof @ these people.

The WBC is considered a nonprofit organization by the federal government, and is therefore exempt from paying taxes.

However tempting it may be to make martyrs of these detestable people by taking revenge upon them through the agency of this info, if you wish to preserve your intergrity the only safe form of using this would involve somehow making them feel ridiculous. With humorless fanatics that is almost an impossible dream.

I disagree. Disrupting someone's mourning right after a loved one's death is very different from disrespecting a gravesite years after the death, with no-one else around. I'm agnostic and take a dim view of religion in general, but I still pull over for funeral processions and stop working in the yard when one goes by. Grieving after a death is a separate thing from whatever dispensation of a corpse one's religion requires. Westboro goes way over the line on this front.

I'm not going to have a gravesite, but if I were going to, I wouldn't care if anyone wants to go pee on it after the funeral is over and everyone has gone home.

Westboro protests seem to be about a general hatred that is faceless and intrudes on public space and demands to be heard. This one is basically some cool edgy selfies.

Also there's an established trope of protest movements ending up getting to the point where they're committing full scale grave desecration: this happened with some hunt saboteurs and animal rights activists in the UK ... I really don't want to see opposition to the WBC go down this route.

I think the majority of the Westboro congregation consists of Phelpses or Phelps associates, so it's not like they even recruited membership from afar. It's just one bonkers family with a modest advertising budget and frequent flyer miles.
