i think you can pretty much register right up until the tourney starts, but i'd do it beforehand anyway so if you're a couple of minutes late you can still join in (maybe miss a couple of hands) rather than missing it altogether!

For some dumb reason I've been sort of following this Isildur1 business on Full Tilt, and happened to be watching Saturday night when Ivey and Antonius took him down for $3.5M at PLO, including a $1.365M pot. Sick, mind boggling stuff.

Yesterday I did 2 things I'm very happy about: came back from an 11:1 chip deficit to win a heads-up SnG -- it gave me a good confidence boost about my ability to change gears midstream; and then spent a quality hour with my Poker Copilot stats and identified three very specific leaks in my game.

No, it's $60. I got it when he was just starting out and it was $30, lucky me. It's a very good Mac-only analog to Hold'em Manager or PokerTracker -- stats, analysis, customizable HUD, etc.

i didn't eat until midnight in the end, actually - my plan since i busted out early was to take another load of stuff from my old flat to the new, and then get a KFC or something after off loading - but my car ran out of petrol half way to the new place, i got the bus to a petrol station to get a hand held tanker worth of petrol and that was fine, then i drove on back to the petrol station to fill up proper by which time for some reason the police was holding up the whole station, and i was stuck at this massive queue and couldn't drive on!! (should have wandered in to get a ginsters pastie really) by the time i was done and finished unloading it was like 3 hours later! all the while dying of hunger. pity me. who won then?

whenever this happens to me, I stick with play-money tournaments for an evening -- partly to let the variance run its course while my bankroll isn't at stake (I know this makes almost no logical sense), but mainly to reboot emotionally.

i quite liked the rebuy option, i think, guys, what do you think? I thought it made the game a little more epic in the end, more chips to play with, etc.. and good to have the "second chance". only thing is it was obv a bit more costly than before - shall we keep it?

it was a great game.. WmC built up a massive chip lead that stayed for almost the whole game until the end, good plays the whole way from everyone until the bubble where it got super tense for about 2 levels. and then the heads-up WmC fought back from a deficit to take it down in the end AJ v A9!

couldn't believe what I was seeing today, I had AKo or KK six times in the first 25 hands

i dunno about rebuys, something a tad galling about someone you've knocked out jumping right back in. otoh i made it to the money anyway!

i think the game on sunday has done me good. or maybe just reloading so i have some bankroll.

my game has calmed down and i don't get agitated when i lose with decent cards or whatever. came 2nd and 1st now (after the 2nd on sunday).. hopefully this will mean a swing back to the up!!!!!

certainly paying attention to what other players are doing helps (rather than playing scrabble on the other window)

The ILX tournaments are probably my most successful poker playing. Probably because everybody's playing civilized cards and not aggro-monkey high-speed chicken. In fact, it's possible that I'm seen as the aggro-monkey.

What stakes do you have to get up to lose the maniacs? Or are they at all buy-in levels?

i dunno, i definitely feel happier when i play $10+1. whenever i start on $5 and lower people start to annoy me and i go on tilt cursing everyone chasing lost causes and finding them

I've finally realized that anything with quicker than 6-min. levels is just stooopid (for me). I like Stars' structure better, with 10-minute levels.

like to think that quicker the structure, more it has to do with luck, less ROI, more rake to the pokersite.

srsly i had a $70 downturn the week before last. playing absolutely stinking poker too (i was so desperate for good cards when i had some i keep playing them too hard, going for too many coinflips and it was a vicious circle). playing these ilx games is actually quite therapeutic, actually playing with people you know rather than faceless fulltilt accounts really put the game back in the correct perspective

I haven't, Wm - is there any genuine appeal, or is it just gimmicky? On FT I only play these ILX tourneys so my payroll is under $100...

It seemed gimmicky at first but after a week it seems truly brilliant. I can't play it -- I'm not a ring game player anyway, and I don't have the iron will needed to figure out a plan and stick to it. But I'm reading about people who are counting their winnings in buy-ins per hour, not big blinds per hour. Meanwhile FT is hauling in tons of extra rake.

Almost every single time I play against non-ILX people, I make money. Just now, for example, I doubled my $20 buy-in in about 15 minutes. Every single time I play in the PWN cup, I lose $5-10 dollars. This stark difference can only be because...

a) you guys are way too good
b) I have had a horrible run of luck in the PWN cup
c) I'm not very good at tournament style poker (other than the PWN cup, I usually play ring games where you can come and go as you please, and the blinds don't go up over time)
d) the curse of catbeast

My brain tells me it's probably c), but my heart tells me d)

I used to beat fairly consistently the $20 sngs when I played regularly, but that hardly makes me 1337. Ken is an awesome live player but I think he gets bored online. And Rock is a machine, with very few chinks.

re c), yes, it's a different skill for sure, and if you're not prepared to adjust your game as the blinds go up (especially versus other players who do), you'll probably underperform as things get interesting in a tourney,

actually is it possible to run private ring games?

might be fun to do if we can also keep the buy in real low as a once a month special instead of usual tourney..

would guess (c), though I'm just the opposite (prefer tournaments, miserable failure at ring)

I think it helps that I've mostly played Limit instead of NL the last year and a half, but I'm not sure how it helps. Maybe that I've seen a lot more postflop play than you guys?

i think playing limit helps a lot to focus on the odds which many NL players don't pay enough attention to at times?

I think that's right. I know it keeps me from being too in love with my pocket pairs -- in limit, when there's no way to chase people away from the pot preflop and my QQ-KK-AA is up against 4-5 villains, I've learned the hard way not to get too tilted when they're cracked.

Question for Mark and Ken and anyone else with opinions on MTT SnGs: I played a few 45s and one 27 this weekend and cashed in 3 of 8, no wins. Do you guys pay any attention to % in the money, or is it all about ROI? If the former, is there a number you shoot for?

I just tighten up a bit before the bubble as there's no point in busting out one or two short of the money with marginal hands. Once you're in the money, though, you have to take calculated risks as the high paying places are so much more profitable than the mid-low ones.

I've won a couple of 45-man tourneys (but none with more players) and you have to play with balls, keep an eye on stack sizes and grab opportunities whenever you can.

In other words, it's all about ROI. Don't bust on the bubble, but don't play scared.

WmC, have you thought about doing a few heads up tourneys to improve that aspect of your game? I think you're maybe a bit conservative at times and it might help you loosen up.

I've thought about it -- it's a little daunting though, the prospect of getting all or nothing. The funny thing is, in Limit SnGs (STT) I'm pretty strong when we get down to 2- and 3-handed. I have as many wins as I have 2nds + 3rds combined. But you're right, I do tighten up a bit too much in NL -- still getting the lay of the land.

Today I was reading Shaun Deeb's Beginner's Guide to 180s and going "hmmmm" a lot.

wmc i thought you usually play pretty good when it gets to heads up actually.

although i'm no good usually. at the bubble it depending on how the other players play, i guess, usually tighten up and also encourage people to go at each other (and for a 3 places paid go harder at the player with the medium stack as they have the most to lose and tend to get softer)

god it has been fun. it's my final day i think it's just about right as i'm exhausted!!

played a couple of tourneys at the caesars palace a lot of fun but no winnings. turned to the student oriented casino "o'shea's" and found the going much easier and chopped between top two for $270.

Today I had the weirdest two hands - first hand, the ace was spade was exposed for one dude. I had QQ and guy immediately before me raised with a short stack (reckoned i stood a good chance with one A gone) and I put him all in, turned out we both had QQ. But sickeningly 4 clubs showed on the showdown and I won, felt a bit ill and think that I had used up all my luck

Very next hand, I was big blind (there's 50 ante and it's 100/200) everyone folded except chip leader small blind who flat called, i had 4 6 and flop was 7 5 10, he raised minimum and i called, turn was 8, he raised again and I went all in, he had 7 5 and I made the low straight, he called and the 7 came on the river.

I had no cause to complain given the immediately previous hand but it is a funny game isn't it? Walked out of Caesar's Palace into the sunshine, think it might be my last game of this trip (down $65 overall due to an ill adviced cash game while i was drunk and waiting in the queue for the cheap steak at Bill's). Reckon if I ever go again I'll have to go with someone else as all the ups and downs is really hard when you're on your own!

final flutter this morning at the oshea again before i left and chopped another at the top for $120, which left me annoyingly $5 down overall in the end. it has been fun though although definitely had enough for the time being now. i will miss the free drinks when i get back to a uk casino (i was knocking back long islands at the caesar's game)
