Shows that ran into the 00s or from the 80s should be judged on their 90s output only.

As in Samuel's poll, you get 25 votes.
Points go as follows: 1st-250, 2nd-240 etc.

Email ballots to joe.gooden @ gmail.com. Voting ends in one month's time, December the 9th.

Good luck and god speed.

I am flesh and blood. You are software and circuitry. (chap), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

Father Ted to win by Wire-esque margin plz

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:37 (fifteen years ago)

Seinfeld surely?

PC Thug (Ned Trifle II), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

Is Seinfeld actually any good? Would I like it? I've heard it's very mainstream, if influential.

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

i seriously have no idea what my #1 is going to be.

autogooner (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

Simpsons will obv walk this, but the fun is in the journey

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:44 (fifteen years ago)

lj: you are britisher so you will not find it funny. i genuinely don't know one person who likes it, and that includes britisher ilxors in this theory.

autogooner (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:45 (fifteen years ago)

I prefer it to the Simpsons

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:45 (fifteen years ago)

to be brutally honest i've heard it's only a step or two up from Everybody Loves Raymond, which i saw on a plane once and immediately wished i'd unseen

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

I've always thought Seinfeld sucks because of my own allergy to slap-bass interludes between scenes. I can't get much past the horrible noise to appreciate the so-called comedy.

fake plastic butts (suzy), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

But it's OK to like Curb Your Enthusiasm, I suppose?

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

lj: you are britisher so you will not find it funny. i genuinely don't know one person who likes it, and that includes britisher ilxors in this theory.

It will be my No.1 and I am British. It brings the lols even after how ever many year it is and numerous repeats.

PC Thug (Ned Trifle II), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:47 (fifteen years ago)

But it's OK to like Curb Your Enthusiasm, I suppose?

Love Curb, never got Seinfeld. This seems to be a commonly held position amongst my countrymen.

I am flesh and blood. You are software and circuitry. (chap), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

ok my bad, i just took the discussion on the ilx 2000s telly poll as britishers h8 seinfeld

autogooner (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

Curb is awesome. Arrested Development is my favourite show ever. My voting in this poll will however be almost exclusively British, for understandable formative reasons.

joekin' phoenix (country matters), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:48 (fifteen years ago)

I'm guessing there will be more of a UK presence than in the 00s poll. And more comedy.

I am flesh and blood. You are software and circuitry. (chap), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:50 (fifteen years ago)

also good looking on teh poll, chap.

autogooner (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

Heheh, yeah - The Nazis: A Warning From History is all very well and good but give me a good knob joke any day.

PC Thug (Ned Trifle II), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

xp

PC Thug (Ned Trifle II), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

Did Seinfeld ever have any British characters in it? If not, this is why I boycotted it in the 90s.

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

Did Seinfeld ever have any British characters in it?

*shudder*

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

they could've had Craig Ferguson

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 14:57 (fifteen years ago)

i can't believe everybody loves raymond started in 1996. that has thrown my temporal frame of reference completely out of whack. is the milk still good? who is the president? have i grown a great bushy beard?

voted already. 19 UK shows, 6 US. 16 comedy shows.

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:15 (fifteen years ago)

"Enough with the shuddering" <---------- Seinfeld style yuks

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:16 (fifteen years ago)

assuming "The Cops" already nominated is something different

it most definitely is different altho it only just occurred to me some may think not. doubt it will make the list anyway but it was the first UK show to do 'fly on the wall' style camera view for fictional show iirc.

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

Seinfeld goes from good to really good to just fine to okay. I'd personally recommend season 4 to anyone who's on the fence, as it's the best-written of the seasons and actually hangs together as one long story (something they regrettably never really tried to do again).

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

voted already. 19 UK shows, 6 US. 16 comedy shows.

21, 4, 16

George Mucus (ledge), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:25 (fifteen years ago)

So lemme guess: the UK is gonna dominate this time?

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:26 (fifteen years ago)

Nah you lot will bring the numbers, we'll all be split between Vic & Bob and Lee & Herring and Adam & Joe and Baddiel & Newman and...

George Mucus (ledge), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:28 (fifteen years ago)

I kiss whoever nominated Drop the Dead Donkey, as I was considering doing so but was scared off by a pretty negative ILX thread about it long ago + not actually having seen it since the 90s, and then I had to go to the world's longest meeting

can only hope youtubing it later is not as bad the time I youtubed Joking Apart, which I thought was hysterical aged 13, and found it a terrible laughs-free wasteland. it is possible that I just liked all sitcoms indiscriminately

subtyll cauillacyons (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

Apart for Jerry Springer, I can't see anything other than comedies to vote for in this

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

... Twin Peaks, I suppose is the only one

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:32 (fifteen years ago)

Later with Jools and no White Room is a terrible affront to all 3 people who might have put the latter in 24th place etc etc

(sorry chap, thank you for organising this)

subtyll cauillacyons (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

didn't actually vote for DTDD in the end - it really fell off and got too mean in the end. KYTV will deserve better.

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:42 (fifteen years ago)

I don't remember KYTV

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

This is proving to be a pretty good way of teaching myself Excel so far.

KYTV was a kind of earlier, far less edgy Day Today wasn't it?

I am flesh and blood. You are software and circuitry. (chap), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:46 (fifteen years ago)

A lot of American shows there I've never heard of, let alone seen, but I suspect far more British shows they've never heard of, let alone seen

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

damn this is WAY harder to whittle down to a top 25 than the other poll was

some dude, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:49 (fifteen years ago)

xp less edgy, more actual lols

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:50 (fifteen years ago)

damn this is WAY harder to whittle down to a top 25 than the other poll was

^^^^^^^^^ This. Although that might be because my favor towards a lot of these shows is fueled almost entirely by nostalgia, having not seen some of them in 15 years or more.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

I feel that Equinox, The Rough Guide, Goodness Gracious Me and Desmond's should be on this list

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

There's a handful of shows I really want to vote for that I haven't seen in ages, but the hard part is weighing them against the shows I've seen in reruns more recently but am less enthusiastic about.

some dude, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

I remember an Open University programme (might have been more than one) about rainbows as being one of my favourite progs of the decade

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

Also Horizon, the (early) 90s was a good decade for science documentary.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

Absolutely.... I mean absolutely not Absolutely

I Poxy the Fule (Tom D.), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 16:05 (fifteen years ago)

Horizon in the 00s has been fucking awful tho maybe we should've nommed The Sky At Night.

modescalator (blueski), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

We have the first programme to break the 1000 point mark.

I am flesh and blood. You are software and circuitry. (chap), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

Nostalgia/ "those were the times" going to play a big part in this, right? Some of the stuff that formed my entire sense of humour might not seem that amazing re-watching now but made me appreciate everything I love.

Not the real Village People, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

I noticed Sopranos ain't on the noms list but Freaks and Geeks and Spaced are.

Jouster, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, that's an oversight on my part, it's supposed to be there. Feel free to vote for it.

I am flesh and blood. You are software and circuitry. (chap), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

Personally I didn't, as I consider it more of an 00s phenomenon, but it's entirely up to you of course.

I am flesh and blood. You are software and circuitry. (chap), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 19:16 (fifteen years ago)

many xposts but I'm british btw and I think Seinfeld is v funny

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

i do now but i didn't in the 90s

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 19:41 (fifteen years ago)

It's kind of dealbreaker for me. If you don't find Seinfield funny I don't know if we can ever be friends. It's make things between me and Mrs. Trifle a bit tricky I can tell you.

PC Thug (Ned Trifle II), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

Currently a UK programme and a US show jousting for a considerable early lead.

Who was on Fist of Fun? I'd forgotten it ever existed until I worked my way down through this list, now I keep getting this flashback of a little girl, possibly wearing a boxing glove, saying 'Fist of Fun'. But that's all I can remember.

Fist Of Fun = Lee & Herring, The Actor Kevin Eldon (ft. his first appearance as Rod Hull), Peter Baynham, David Schneider (iirc) and that lot. couldn't actually find room on my ballot for it but was funny esp. all the digs at Patrick Marber.

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

I thought it was something to do with Lee & Herring, but I could have sworn the name of their programme was some kind of pun to do with Worcester Sauce and their names.

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

One of my choices is not actually in this poll, which is annoying (999 Lifesavers) but I probably should have thought about that during the pre-nomination nominations, plus it's a mostly-nostalgic lower-end choice so I'm not TOO distraught.

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 21:03 (fifteen years ago)

I think my list is going to be 75% animated when I get around to it. Batman, Bebop, Eva, Aeon Flux, Escaflowne, Critic, Simpsons, Tick, etc.

Nhex, Tuesday, 10 November 2009 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

Awww fuck, how could I not have noticed Babylon 5 isnt on here.

I tried to include a few popular choices that I figured people enjoyed but which I didn't personally watch in my last batch of nominations (Farscape, fer example. I meant to include B5, too. My bad.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 10 November 2009 22:43 (fifteen years ago)

O crap, just remembered Steve Irwin, that was kind of cult viewing for us at one point.
Just about to send mine. Man, that was difficult. Reading the list and not having seen most of them I thought it would be easy but there's at least 3 I would give top place to.

Not the real Village People, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

Have 30 shows, have to narrow down to 25 and then ORDER THEM... this will take me a while :(

I predict Simpsons walking this fwiw.

it is pretty crazy how long Murphy Brown was on -- i think everybody associates it w/ the Bush/Quayle years but they actually made it to Clinton's 2nd term

really really need to get around to doing this.

Okay, I've just sent mine in. I wasn't particularly happy with the lower reaches of the poll, but I had the opposite reaction to most of you - it was tough to actually find 25 that I *loved*.

Some stats, just for fun: in my ballot, there were 18 British, 5.5 US, and 1.5 Canadian programmes (counting one that was apparently a joint American/Canadian venture). There were 16 comedy-oriented programmes. I secretly think my number 25 is shit but couldn’t omit it from my vote for personal reasons (okay, I admit it, I voted for Gamesmaster! On the other hand, if I’d left it out I would have been voting for Neighbours, so hey ho).

<3 The Maxx, even though it doesn't stand a chance. The fall after high school, entertainment with my friends consisted of drugs/booze, The Craft, The Maxx, Tank Girl and Undressed. And Dido's "Thank You" coming on VH1 at 3am every night, followed by Uncle Kracker.

it's weird that E4 can fine time to show 4 (or is it 6?) episodes of friends a day, but i don't think seinfeld has _ever_ been repeated in the Uk.

caek, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 06:56 (fifteen years ago)

It's on Virgin 1 every day at the mo. I never understood why the Beeb treated it so badly when they had it it was on late (sometimes really late), mid-week, they pissed about with the running order, stopped it mid-season to show more darts. It was difficult trying to watch Seinfeld in the UK back then.

Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 08:16 (fifteen years ago)

I've never seen the last series of Seinfeld due to the vagaries of BBC2's scheduling (and being a lol student with no video recorder). I think I'll start recording the re-runs on Virgin 1 though.

The 90s was prime-era Neighbours. Home and Away had lost me by the end of the 80s, but Neighbours was great. It might sneak in the bottom end of my poll when I get round to doing it.

ailsa, Wednesday, 18 November 2009 08:20 (fifteen years ago)

Seinfeld rules. All I can say to the naysayers is it maybe took me 3 or 4 episodes to "get" it, and imo the show is usually structured so the major lols hit at the end of each ep, but it basically pisses on any UK sitcom from this era (with 1 noble exception).

eman moomar (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 18 November 2009 08:46 (fifteen years ago)

Neighbours >>> Friends >>> Home & Away >>> Seinfeld.

When I first got into Curb, I downloaded the first 3 seasons. Watch all of them. Genuinely only LOLd 4 times. Thought some other bits were "kind of amusing, I guess" but it was dull, the characters are shit and pointless and not deserving of my attention and eurgh... I just don't get why it is the Beatles of sitcoms.

Finally got my poll together. British telly got slighted across the board, unfortch. I just haven't immersed myself in it enough yet, I'm afraid. Plus there were just too many epochal, hyper-formative shows to choose from (two of my all-time top three were in the '90s). Although this poll finally inspired me to start watching Father Ted at long last, and it really is quite good. So thanks, Brits!

Round the Twist was on British TV for quite a while - definitely fond memories of it as a kid. And yes, there was a pissing competition episode - not sure if it was with an erection, I seem to recall the character in question befriending some sort of water sprite who gave him super-pissing power.

My ballot breakdown: 2 Canadian/American productions, 1 show whose rotating cast and production staff was largely British but which isn't a British show per se, 1 show produced for American television but which featured a large percentage of British material during the time that I was its biggest fan, 1 Danish show (which should be pretty durn easy to guess from the list of nominees), and the rest American. It occurs to me now that any chance Riget had of making it into a top slot is pretty much nil since most of the few people aware of its existence (including me, honestly...I totally missed it the first time I went through the nominees) are more familiar with the title The Kingdom.

I HEART CREEPY MENS (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 1 December 2009 17:37 (fifteen years ago)
