December 6th is St. Nicholas Day which in many European countries is a festival for kids that centers around St. Nicholas and his reputation as a bringer of gifts. I am fascinated by the whole thing but especially the idea of St. Nicholas' companion Knecht Ruprecht (Germany) or Krampus (Bavaria/Austria).
In Germany, Nikolaus is usually celebrated on a small scale. Many children put a boot called Nikolaus-Stiefel outside the front door on the night of December 5 to December 6. St. Nicholas fills the boot with gifts and sweets, and at the same time checks up on the children to see if they were good, polite and helpful the last year. If they were not, they will have a tree branch (rute) in their boots instead. Sometimes a disguised Nikolaus also visits the children at school or in their homes and asks them if they have been good (sometimes ostensibly checking his golden book for their record), handing out presents on a per-behaviour basis. This has become more lenient in recent decades. But for many children, Nikolaus also elicited fear, as he was often accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht (Servant Ruprecht), who would threaten to beat, or sometimes actually beat the children for misbehaviour as using this myth to 'bring up cheek children' for a better, good behaviour. Any kind of punishment isn't really following and just an antic legend. Knecht Ruprecht furthermore was equipped with deerlegs. In Switzerland, where he is called Schmutzli, he would threaten to put bad children in a sack and take them back to the dark forest. In other accounts he would throw the sack into the river, drowning the naughty children. These traditions were implemented more rigidly in Catholic countries and regions such as Austria or Bavaria. In highly Catholic regions, the local priest was informed by the parents about their children's behaviour and would then personally visit the homes in the traditional Christian garment and threaten to beat them with a rod. In parts of Austria, Krampusse, who local tradition says are Nikolaus's helpers (in reality, typically children of poor families), roamed the streets during the festival. They wore masks and dragged chains behind them. These Krampusläufe (Krampus runs) still exist.
When I was a kid my parents did the whole boot thing with me but I always got candy and was never punished. My dad recently told me a story about when he was a kid and Nicholaus and Knecht Ruprecht visited his house while a friend of his was there. They were asked to recite a prayer and the other kid got so scared he just clammed up so my dad took over and said the prayer for him. I guess the fear of being found "bad" and taken away by Ruprecht was very very real.

Krampus is a mythical creature who accompanies Saint Nicholas in various regions of the world during the Christmas season.[citation needed] The word Krampus originates from the Old High German word for claw (Krampen). In the Alpine regions, Krampus is represented by a demon-like creature accompanying Saint Nicholas. Krampus acts in conjunction with Saint Nicholas; the latter gives gifts to good children, while the Krampus gives warnings and punishments to the bad children.[citation needed] Traditionally, young men dress up as the Krampus in the first two weeks of December, particularly in the evening of December 5, and roam the streets frightening children and women with rusty chains and bells.[citation needed] In some rural areas the tradition also includes birching by Krampus, especially of young females.

― bear say hi to me (ENBB), Thursday, 3 December 2009 16:46 (fifteen years ago)
OK yeah, I didn't think that he was originally black because of soot. Was pretty sure it was something racist and surprise surprise, it is or was as may be the case:
Although it is said that the origins of Zwarte Piet are unknown, it seems most plausible that Zwarte Piet is a continuation of the much longer held tradition of depicting Sinterklaas in the company of a dark skinned man, namely thought to be the Devil. This was due to the pervasive belief amongst Europeans that the Devil would resemble a Moor. The first mention of Zwarte Piet in Dutch literature refers to him as a beggar on the street, after Sinterklaas helps him, he promises to stay with Sinterklaas, and help him. It has later been argued that Zwarte Piet was of Italian or other Southern European origin however this interpretation fails to explain the predominant images of Zwarte Piet, who often is depicted in the style of the classic darky icons, contemporaneous with the spread of darky iconography.[1]Moreover, in recent years, in an attempt to soften the racist overtones, it is said that Zwarte Piet is black because he has to climb down the chimneys with the presents for the children. This story also falls short of explaining the Blackfaced, googly-eyed, red-lipped Zwarte Piet dolls, die cuts and displays adorning store windows at this time of year, alongside brightly packaged and displayed, holiday merchandise.[2]Due to the increased awareness surrounding the legacy of slavery in the Netherlands there has been recurring debate around the character of Zwarte Piet.

I was going to say that the chimney explanation sounded like uneasy embarrassed-by-racist-grandpa rationalization

from wikipedia:Because the ogre is wearing a pointed hat resembling a Jewish hat[1], it has been speculated[2] about the possibility of the ogre being the depiction of a Jew as an expression of blood libel against Jews.
however:
According to other theories it is a depiction of the Greek god Cronus. Probably, however, it is just a carnival character intended to frighten disobedient children[3].

dunno that anyone else has mentioned this, but a few years ago i saw an art film/documentary about this. called "kranky klaus", by cameron jamie, scored by the melvins (who played live accompanying it). was awesome.
apparently in the town where this was filmed, there are several krampi who travel about in a pack each christmas eve. they "break into" local homes and terrify the children in a rather wild, violent and chaotic hours-long ritual. the young men and older teen boys of the town do the krampus work, dressing in MASSIVE, shaggy, beastman suits (reminiscent of some NW native spirit costumes) and tromping about through the snow. at the end of the night they all zonk out in a bar to drink and party. favorite scene was where the krampi take a pause to psych up by playing ram jam's black betty at someone's house.
anyway, was hilarious watching the melvins crush heads with snowbound slow-mo monster stomping in the background.

I grew up in the Netherlands in the 1970's. No one seemed to have a problem with Black Pete being black, back then. That was just his color, without any race attached to it; no matter what the origin of the story was. Black kids saw the same source for candy in him as the white ones, not a soul brother. And no white kid will walk up to a black man to ask for candy. Kids know that difference, obviously and of course. Political correct people started to demand that Black Pete should change, that he would be purple colored, and pick, orange, yellow, etc. From that point on his blackness became an issue. Traditions aren't changed easily.
Black Pete's are not slaves. They work for Saint Nicolas by choice, because they like him. They seem to be the only ones who can be playful and carefree around Saint Nicolas, where all the kids fear him and all the grown-ups treat him with the utmost respect and good manners. A desirable position. Black Pete got the kids respect too. Because if you didn't behave he could spank you or take you back with him in a bag, where you would be made into ginger cookies.
I'm glad we didn't have Krampus in the Netherlands. I would have lost sleep over that.

Actually, this year the issue with Saint Nicolas was that he has a Christian Cross on his hat and that it was changed this year into a neutral sign, in order to make the Saint more appealing/less offensive to the large Muslim population too. Traditionists were outraged and talked about islamnization. Funny thing: the muslims didn't ask for it and couldn't care less.

BOOM
On December 6 and December 20 Santa's meanie helpers (many dressed up as grotesque demons) have a "Krampus run" around a few Munich Christmas markets, especially the one at Marienplatz. It's worth seeing for the costumes alone and takes place from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

The traditional "Krampus Run" recalls the Christian legend of bishop Saint Nicholas and his dark-faced companion, "Krampus". Today, many young people enjoy bringing the 500-year custom back to life. "Sparifankerl Pass", Munich's first "Krampusgruppe", does a breathtaking race through the market, dressed in archaic costumes.
"Krampus Run": Dates: Sun, December 5 & 19, 4:00 p.m - 5:00 p.m.

When my wife was a little Viennese girl, one of the neighbors in the apartment building would dress up as Nikolo and go to all of the apartments with little kids in them. One year, her father suggested it would be more fun if he joined in as Krampus. So my future wife, her little brother, and a couple of neighbors kids were playing at her parents apartment on the 5th when they heard the rattling of chains signifying the arrival of Krampus. The four children immediately ran under a table, clutching each other and wailing, their eyes closed tightly. Krampus did not return the following year.

yeah this thread was my first encounter with krampus, no one i shared him with had heard of him, but now he seems to be everywhere. maybe we as a community should now divert our attention towards popularising the icelandic yule cat?

You all know the Yule Cat And that Cat was huge indeed. People didn't know where he came from Or where he went.
He opened his glaring eyes wide, The two of them glowing bright. It took a really brave man To look straight into them.
His whiskers, sharp as bristles, His back arched up high. And the claws of his hairy paws Were a terrible sight.
He gave a wave of his strong tail, He jumped and he clawed and he hissed. Sometimes up in the valley, Sometimes down by the shore.
He roamed at large, hungry and evil In the freezing Yule snow. In every home People shuddered at his name.
If one heard a pitiful "meow" Something evil would happen soon. Everybody knew he hunted men But didn't care for mice.
He picked on the very poor That no new garments got For Yule - who toiled And lived in dire need.
From them he took in one fell swoop Their whole Yule dinner Always eating it himself If he possibly could.
Hence it was that the women At their spinning wheels sat Spinning a colorful thread For a frock or a little sock.
Because you mustn't let the Cat Get hold of the little children. They had to get something new to wear From the grownups each year.
And when the lights came on, on Yule Eve And the Cat peered in, The little children stood rosy and proud All dressed up in their new clothes.
Some had gotten an apron And some had gotten shoes Or something that was needed - That was all it took.
For all who got something new to wear Stayed out of that pussy-cat's grasp He then gave an awful hiss But went on his way.
Whether he still exists I do not know. But his visit would be in vain If next time everybody Got something new to wear.
Now you might be thinking of helping Where help is needed most. Perhaps you'll find some children That have nothing at all.
Perhaps searching for those That live in a lightless world Will give you a happy day And a Merry, Merry Yule.

Christmas in Europe is terrifying in general if you've been naughty. At best you can expect to be beaten by a semi-reformed child-killer. At worst you will be put in a sack and taken straight to hell. Even if you have behaved yourself there are zombie horses to deal with.

xxp I wouldn't want that responsibility, I don't watch a lot of films in this genre anymore. It's kinda boring tho. There are only a couple of creepy bits, and zero laughs in the theatre throughout (this was with an audience who, I got the impression, were really ready to like it). Gremlins it isn't.

For a PG-13 horror movie that's fun but also pretty dark and not afraid to stay dark, I thought "Unleash the Krampus: The Motion Picture" was pretty solid. Sure, there was the expected script sloppiness and shortcuts, but they weren't as bad as usual, and there was an element of wit at play throughout, however subtle. I particularly liked a bit where everyone's asleep and the fire burns out just as the iPad battery goes from 1% to dead.
Also, good acting across the board, even the kids.
