Ten a day now till Friday. Are you excited? I'm excited.
Apologies in advance for some shonky YouTube clips - in one case I couldn't find anything at all.
Coming up at number 50, a personal fave of mine that just managed to sneak in.

That's shockingly low for Frasier! All its best seasons were in the '90s too. Struggling to think of a better sitcom from the period.

xps. Nice Frasier clip. I always preferred Niles to Frasier until he went all mushy with Daphne.

Yeah, I was never a huge fan, but whenever I watched it it was obvious that Niles was the best.

I haven't revisited Big Night Out since the 90s, but I find that clip hilarious. Might be time for a re-watch.

― Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Monday, 7 December 2009 14:06 (sixteen years ago)
I got love for Frasier but it's maybe too arch and frou-frou and sometimes downright not funny enough to inspire big big love.
― Noodle. Tool. 2. Kool (Noodle Vague), Monday, 7 December 2009 14:06 (sixteen years ago)
Whereas I voted G.B.H. very high. I'm remembering it thru a haze of enchanting distance but to me this was Bleasdale's most accomplished work, plus stellar cast, plus Byzantine plotting, plus deep dissection of part of what the fuck was going wrong with the Left in the UK by 1990, plus awesome armchair psychology. So deep and rich and so much better than the highly enjoyable but lesser "it's grim up North in the 80s" drama that's no doubt placed higher.

Oh, it's as good, certainly. But there only 25 eps of that and I feel like I know them inside and out, whereas I think I could dip into Frasier repeats for the rest of time and catch something new (whether genuinely new or just forgotten). Still surprised at #49.

Most of the shows on the list came under this category for me: I used to mildly enjoy it for a bit but then lost interest when it stopped being on at tea-time or something. This is why long-term plotlines annoy me.
― Noodle. Tool. 2. Kool (Noodle Vague), Monday, 7 December 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

Rowley Birkin was 1 joke that wasn't funny to begin with. And Paul Whitehouse needs to take his attempts to inject pathos into the sketch show and stuff them right up his (drunken mumble argle bargle hahaha catchphrase)

Batman -That was my number 2 show. It's really held up well - the aesthetic decision to set it in a no-man's land of time, with influences from all eras of the character, was a smart one.

never liked the 'sad at the end' birkin sketch, but the one where he suddenly yelps "snake!" would still make me laugh today.
going to rep for the wonder years too. i was roughly kev arnold's age when it first ran, so it was key famiuly viewing at mine because i identified w/him, and my dad loved the music and was also hella sentimental. caught some episodes the other week by accident while staying at my brother's (he has sky) and while it was more mawkish than i'd remembered it, i do think the show was pretty good at capturing some of the confusion of adolescence. though it was a little smug about it.

I know 120 Minutes ran for the whole decade, but I never watched it post-'91. It is 80s TV in my mind.

120 mins was on (iirc) from 12-2 which was past my bedtime in HS so I used to sneak downstairs and watch it while my parents slept. <3 <3 <3 I have v fond memories of this show as a result.
― ★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Monday, 7 December 2009 16:10 (sixteen years ago)
I very clearly remember seeing the video for "Just like Heaven" on 120 mins when I was about 12 or 13 and thinking it was the best song I'd ever heard. I bought my first Cure CD the next day.
― ★彡☆ ★彡 (ENBB), Monday, 7 December 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)
The first of my nominees! I started watching 120 Minutes when I lived on a Navy base in 9th grade (prolly, like, 120 minutes away from anything that might be considered civilization). So I was stranded in this weird oasis with no one else my age and living in southern Indiana and feeling like an outcast in a new school and having nothing to really connect with. I stumbled upon late night MTV programming and I remember seeing The Sundays' 'Here's Where The Story Ends' for the first time on 120 Minutes, and I was totally sold. Those early '90s years when the show was very Brit-heavy were a revelation and an amazing introduction to music I may never have discovered otherwise.

― EZ Snappin, Monday, 7 December 2009 16:28 (sixteen years ago)
that's why i didn't vote for it, my personal associations with it are mostly late '80s, even though i probably watched it into '91 or '92.

The second show from my ballot; really odd, really poignant. Am very excited MTV is making this available as a burn-to-order DVD through Amazon.
― EZ Snappin, Monday, 7 December 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)
it was basically 120 Minutes but for dance music (at least the kind that didn't end up getting played on the Euro editions of 120M in the 90s) - airing on MTV Europe for nearly 10 years. mainly just videos (often the first show to air them) but expanded to feature studio guests (from A Guy Called Gerald to Jean-Michel Jarre) each week, live performances, reports from festivals etc.
― mdskltr (blueski), Monday, 7 December 2009 16:46 (sixteen years ago)

― ailsa, Monday, 7 December 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)
i haven't gone back and rewatched the maxx and i'm not even sure i saw the entire series, i probably missed a few episodes. but it was really striking and there are things from it that have stuck with me ever since. none of the other allegedly "grown up" cartoons since have seemed as interesting or imaginative to me.
― hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 7 December 2009 18:33 (sixteen years ago)
The Maxx was as faithful an adaptation as there ever was. Practically the comic pasted onto the screen.
You Brits can thank me for nominating G.B.H.. And you're welcome. Still haven't seen it and barely know what it is, but I'd heard enough good things about it that it's on my 'must see at some point' list. And I figured it deserved a nod.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 7 December 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)
So, yeah, tipsy: if you've never read the comics, hop to it! The cartoon encapsulates a relatively small bit of a much larger story.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 7 December 2009 19:08 (sixteen years ago)
My brother hated this! He complained through the whole thing: "Why aren't I just reading a comic and listening to a crappy jazz CD?"
― mascara and ties (Abbott), Monday, 7 December 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, to be honest, it's why I wasn't the hugest fan. I liked the comic bunches, but I didn't really feel like the cartoon brought a lot to the table. I can see where you might really dig it, though, if you weren't aware of/interested in the comic.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Monday, 7 December 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)

― adorable cheese inscription (a hoy hoy), Monday, 7 December 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)
Goddam, I forgot to vote again. Curses! If Twin Peaks finishes in the top 5, I will nevertheless feel fairly represented.
Those early '90s years when the show was very Brit-heavy were a revelation and an amazing introduction to music I may never have discovered otherwise. - OTM! Like ENBB, I snuck downstairs on Sundays to watch this & paid the price may times over during Monday first period. The show lost me during the Pinfield era, as it progressively became nothing more than a rehash of the same alt-rock/nu-punk roster that MTV's main playlist consisted of.

I missed the deadline as well. Initially I wasn't too keen on voting anyway, as my age means I'd be viewing a lot of this through the prism of youth/nostalgia over actual quality. However, an actual rundown of the shortlist I mocked up surprised me by mostly being shows of verifiable quality. Day Today and Buffy would have jostled for my top vote. I hope Sports Night is represented somewhere as well.

Yeah, but the early part of the 90s had plenty of pre-Pinfield greatness.

Like ENBB, I snuck downstairs on Sundays to watch this & paid the price may times over during Monday first period.
One of the (in retrospect) delightful things about the 120 Minutes airtime is that I pointedly didn't do this all that much. I often just taped it and watched it the next day, which means I have a ton of the stuff floating around somewhere on rapidly-degrading VHS tapes.

^ Oh but sneaking to watch it at midnight was 1/2 the fun.
The show lost me during the Pinfield era, as it progressively became nothing more than a rehash of the same alt-rock/nu-punk roster that MTV's main playlist consisted of.
Oh see I watched mainly the Pinfield stuff. I think I too young and not quite cool enough to know about it any earlier than that. At the time though I was pretty into the stuff you described so it was OK by me.

problem with this poll was that i couldn't remember too many shows, and i'll no doubt be kicking myself as ones i should have remembered/voted for come up.
frasier deserved a higher placing, i think. yeah it's arch and frou-frou, but all sitcom characters have to have some basic charactersics to riff on. at least frasier's were different.
― Louis Cll (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 12:45 (sixteen years ago)
There were a few years that I watched Conan every night upon getting home from work. I can't remember many of the bits now though - the In the Year 2000 segment was great, in it's time. Was there a running gag about Preparation H? The Max Weinberg 7 were great. Kinda surprised that he placed this high.

Like I said I like Frasier. It feels like a good winter show actually, would be nice to curl up with a bunch of eps + some booze about now. I was trying to account for why it doesn't inspire much devotion, seemingly.

i already had this argument in the nominations thread, but i'll reiterate: Freaks & Geeks only aired 6 episodes in the '90s, and it did really well on the '00s poll, so there was absolutely no need to have it in this poll, and it probably bumped some great show that was on for a hundred episodes out of the list.

I get what you're saying, but I couldn't have excluded it in good conscience. I think it garnered less votes than it would've if the 00s poll hadn't existed for the reasons you've pointed out.

Animaniacs placed pretty much solely based on nostalgia. Not that I'm hatin', I'm just sayin'. It wasn't that good a show, and that '90s WB animation (also featured on Tiny Toon Adventures) was pretty abysmal. But then so was most animation in the '90s.
P.S. I hope X-Men is top ten.

Batman was good, but I felt like they kept improving the formula with each subsequent show. JLA was the bomb. And they're all really among some of the best cartoons/superhero entertainment ever.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 14:04 (sixteen years ago)
It has aged really badly but I loved pretty much all of the first 6 series of Red Dwarf. These days I don't even pause as I pass it on my way through the cable channels but I think it deserves a place in the list.
― blue_eyes chrono_trigger dirty engineer glasses (onimo), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 14:06 (sixteen years ago)
Can't believe I didn't vote for Red Dwarf.
It went on too long, and it wasn't that good at the beginning, and it suffered from the danger of all SF crossover shows: over-pandering to the nerd audience. But there are 4 or 5 seasons in the middle which are basically the classic formula of all great UK sitcoms: group of losers trapped in claustrophobic circumstances zinging the fuck out of each other. When it was like that, it was golden.
― Noodle. Tool. 2. Kool (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 14:06 (sixteen years ago)
yeha, red dwarf was nearly as good as the brittas empire. psyched for keeping up appearances now.
― Louis Cll (darraghmac), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 14:07 (sixteen years ago)
I'm fond of Red Dwarf. Looking back, a lot of the jokes are a bit crap, but the stories and characters hold up well for the most part. I think the first two series are the best though, which were both broadcast in the 80s. There was an interesting atmosphere of loneliness and claustrophobia which were overwhelmed by sci-fi goofiness later on.

Very happy to see both Animaniacs and Red Dwarf place; both hold up much better than I would have guessed at the time.
I'm kind of surprised at the Animaniacs hating - it was such a smart and joyous show, with touches of both the maliciousness and surreality of the classic Warner's stuff, as well as their topicality. Wasn't all gold by any means, but it hit the mark more often than not. For me, it was one of the now rare kid's shows that adults not only wouldn't tear their eyes out when it was on but would want to sit down and watch. I was 20 when it debuted, and caught it as often as I could.

like s1-s3 has such good gags and will smith was genuinely charming imo!!!
plus, carlton's a good foil for him.

fresh prince is the best thing if you stop watching before the boring moral bits at the end. 'the boring moral bits at the end' is basically how I imagine every episode of the cosby show is btw.
― adorable cheese inscription (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 17:11 (sixteen years ago)
Totally expected those last two entries to place much higher than they did, Adam & Joe have had a career renaissance in the UK of late and I thought the Fresh Prince would be one of those big unifying forces given that people on both sides of the Atlantic seem to remember it fondly.
― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 17:11 (sixteen years ago)

I love in Arrested Development when little George Michael stays up, with a metal funnel on his head, to watch the debut of Oz on HBO.
― mascara and ties (Abbott), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 17:19 (sixteen years ago)
I dunno. I mean, I used to watch Fresh Prince, but I also used to watch, like, Suddenly Susan during a time in life when I was seemingly completely devoid of critical faculties. Granted, I haven't watched it in a decade+, so I have no idea how it holds up.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)
Gave plentya points to A&J; love 'em, love 'em, love 'em. They're just naturally hilarious people, and they got on TV. And they had loads of great ideas! Fantastic stuff.
― 102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)
They repeated some of the early Fresh Princes on BBC2 about ten years ago, and they were pretty good. Nice loose performances, and surprisingly political - I mean it wasn't Do the Right Thing, but there was more of that kind of stuff than I remembered.
― Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

i didn't vote for Oz or Freaks and Geeks, because i put them both very high on my 00-list. also thought Fresh Prince would place higher, i still catch reruns of it time to time and it's definitely a lot better than staring at a wall. the boring moral bits are no worse than the ones on Office US

I'd be interested to hear some more US reactions to the Reeves & Mortimer clips. I suspect their humour is very culturally specific.
― Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)
i don't think it's just that it's culturally specific (although of course it's very, very british), it's also you have to have seen their shows from the start and know what vic and bob are like. not that they have a broad decade-long narrative, but i don't think clips work out of context.
that said, i totally lost my shit once typing "shooting stars" into youtube. two hours. gone.

Both of the clips for R&M didn't seem like anything other than regular ol' people bein' goofy (which can be fun), but maybe I am missing a bunch of British referential humor buried deep within.
― real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)
I think it's more that we just find that kind of goofiness particularly funny - the second one is a parody of a show very few non-brits are likely to have seen, as well.

Aww, Friends finished too low. I think most of the haterade this show gets is pretty knee-jerk. Yes, they're kinda lame people who get really excited about seeing Hootie & The Blowfish. But it's a good and funny show about lame people! C'mon!!! This is totally the show the Frasier fans described above: I would gladly sit and watch hours of Friends on a rainy Sunday. It's cozy.
I'm guessing that, because Space Ghost placed where it did, that Cartoon Planet isn't going to place at all. Which is a shame. CP is like the nutty cable access variety show the Space Ghost cast does on their off-hours to amuse themselves. Plus, CP has Brak, and lots of him! I love it a lot.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 14:03 (sixteen years ago)
xp, that's the point of the decade poll.
but in the case of friends, it actually got a lot better around season 7 (first broadcast 2000), and then really hit its stride around 8/9/10. earlier seasons are not quite like blackadder 1 vs. blackadder 2/3/4 different, but they are significantly less funny.

Cracker is my favourite gritty UK drama ever but i guess i just caught it at the right time. several gobsmacking :o scenes and situations. i rewatched pretty much all of it a couple of years back (it was on Homehoice/Tiscali TV on demand) tho and McGovern (and later Paul Abbott)'s tendency to dip over the realism line so as to thrust his points and ideas in yer face often jarred...kinda like Russell T Davies bigger uglier brother in a way.

amazing cast tho
― mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 16:21 (sixteen years ago)
Okay. Now we're getting down to business.
Chap, you (and anyone else unfamiliar) should do yourself a favor and look into Newsradio. I'm actually a little shocked that it didn't make it across the pond, as it's funny in kind of an acultural way. Like, it's almost a farce a lot of the time (in kind of a Frasier vein). It's surprising that something like The Simpsons (that seems so dependent upon a knowledge of American culture) can get so huge in the UK while Newsradio doesn't make a dent.
And My So-Called Life...what can I say? It was like an extention of my high school life, this alternate universe that I'd watch after my real-life drama was done for the day. Loved it. And I watched some recently and it not only holds up but reveals a level of self-aware humor that completely slipped by me when I was as wrapped up in myself and my little life as the characters on the show were. Plus, it takes the award for Most Frustrating Ending EVER.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 16:24 (sixteen years ago)
xp! Newsradio never aired here. tried to go back and watch it since people here kept raving about it but i couldn't get into it. i know i should like it, Phil Hartman, Dave Foley and a pretty Maura Tierney tells me so, but it mostly felt dated and predictable. only watched the first season tho, maybe it picked up speed after that

Animaniacs placed pretty much solely based on nostalgia. Not that I'm hatin', I'm just sayin'. It wasn't that good a show, and that '90s WB animation (also featured on Tiny Toon Adventures) was pretty abysmal. But then so was most animation in the '90s.P.S. I hope X-Men is top ten.― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Tuesday, December 8, 2009 1:50 PM (Yesterday)

not to jump on this so long afterwards, but i can say that this is def not true for me - its a pretty classic show, lots of really weird obscure old hollywood jokes. also pinky and the brain is fucking genius. i have the first 2 seasons on dvd and it still holds up (also, i grad from high school in 91 so it isnt a kiddie thing for me).
also very happy to see knowing me, knowing you and space ghost on here, which are both fantastic.
xpost newsradio is great too, and it def picks up after the first season - at times Phil Hartmans (sadfaceemoticon) greatest work tbh

belated xpost on friends, the first couple seasons of that show were really good. the writing was sharp, the ensemble was good and the characters' quirks hadn't yet devolved into the lazy shorthand gags they inevitably became later on. the ross-rachel storyline was well developed, and lisa kudrow took what could have been a one-note ditzy role and did a lot of very funny things with it. (and, to be fair, i was immediately postcollegiate when it started, so there was a definite "hey a show for us" thing when it started.)

Didn't ITV used to show Newsradio in the UK? I'm sure it used to be on in the post-midnight hours.

Starting to hope Day Today or Brass Eye will make the top 5...?
― adorable cheese inscription (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:24 (sixteen years ago)
I'd be happy to see some Chris Morris stuff near the top of the poll, despite having barely scratched the surface of his work myself.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:28 (sixteen years ago)
Day Today's a lock for top 5 surely, top 3 perhaps? Brass Eye, a bit lower I'd guess.
― go in go hard brother (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:32 (sixteen years ago)
Depends how well known it is outside UK I suppose.
― go in go hard brother (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)
Not very well, I'd wager. I'm aware of its existence, but mostly because I actively seek out good British TV. I don't think any Chris Morris stuff has made it overseas, either on TV or on DVD. Although I may be mistaken.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)
Well, I have high hopes for my top 4 (which should be SO hard to guess) all finishing inside the top 10...in reality, Brass Eye and IAP might fall a little lower.
Father Ted will win this thing by a street. Jerry who?
― 102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)
It'll be a tug of war between FT and Seinfeld for the top two spot, prolly. Although I like the show fine (I do own the entire series), I don't see any reason why Seinfeld should finish top 5. The '90s were composed of better stuff.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)
would be very surprised if Father Ted or anything else beat The Simpsons. This would also be very stupid and wrong. So when's Ren & Stimpy btw?

― adorable cheese inscription (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
The Simpsons should rate highly (perhaps even #1), but I can't help but wonder if its cachet was damaged by the last decade of 'meh'.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:43 (sixteen years ago)
Father Ted will win this thing by a street. Jerry who? Nah, suspect that Simpsons will probably edge it partly due to greater visibility. Top 5, Day Today, Twin Peaks, FT, Simpsons and one other which I haven't a clue. Ren and Stimpy? X-Files?
― go in go hard brother (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:43 (sixteen years ago)
X-Files is another one that shouldn't place as highly as it probably will. Loved it back in the day, but I rewatched a large chunk of it a couple of years ago and it doesn't really hold up. It's not bad and it definitely has its moments, but it sure isn't great.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

― Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 18:15 (sixteen years ago)

― FIFA Brutish & Short (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)
IAP is the 90s UK comedy apex - love it a lot more than TDT and even Father Ted (tho the latter is a bit less painful)
― mdskltr (blueski), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 18:39 (sixteen years ago)
I accurately predicted the top ten in the '00s poll...albeit out of order and a bit late in the game, after a good number of things had been eliminated. But still! I'll take a stab at predictions for the '90s, although all of these UK shows that I'm unaware/barely aware of are total wildcards. In no particular order:
SimpsonsSeinfeldFather TedX-FilesBuffyI'm Alan PartridgeLarry SandersTwin PeaksThe Day TodayKids In The Hall
I may have mistakenly omitted Mr. Show or Brass Eye, but I guess we'll see, won't we!?!
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
swap father ted and seinfeld and that's pretty much the order i expect

― 102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)
I feel fairly secure in predicting that the following will show up in the next set of ten: Ren & Stimpy, Homicide, ST:TNG.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, like I said, it was in no particular order, but your ordering seems pretty solid, LJ.

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 19:22 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I want to give the benefit of the doubt because maybe Billy isn't somewhere in North America and I really have no idea what the impact of KITH is overseas, but I am kinda taken aback that there are still people who haven't even heard of the show. It's 20 years old now (another O_O for you).
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 19:40 (sixteen years ago)
Definitely semi-famous in the UK. I remember people talking about it at school and stuff. But it was shown quite late, so maybe someone a few years younger than me wouldn't know about it.

Yeah.
― Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)
So far only two of my top 10 have placed (Adam & Joe, Knowing Me KY). I included Friends at no. 25 on my list as I have seen every episode multiple times (hard to avoid on E4) and I think there are some truly classic comedy episodes in there. It got better when they started acknowledging some of the characters as slightly twattish (ie Ross).
Re My So-Called Life - it's way more piss-takey of Angela (yet still empathetic) than I remembered, kind of viewed a lot from the parent's POV as well as Angela's. I love it though, despite several crappy filler episodes.
Anyway, holding high hopes for 3 of my top 5 to place.
― Not the real Village People, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)
KitH: Yeah, I definitely watched quite a few episodes. Certain it was on Ch4. Lots of Monty Python style joke cross-dressing, "I'm crushing your head" - something of a catchphrase between me and my mates at the time - Mr. Canoe Head... that's all I seem to remember really. It was good though.
― DavidM, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 19:58 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, this is exactly what I was saying about My So-Called Life upthread. At the time, I was all, "This show totally gets what my life is like!". Seeing it recently, I was all, "This show totally got how ridiculous me and my life were like back then!". It walks a very fine line and it's super subtle about it. I think, at the core, it's just very honest, so the depth and the absurdity both shine simultaneously.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)
so maybe someone a few years younger than me wouldn't know about it.

Whats this "the Day Today" thing that everyone's saying it'll top 5 place? Also lol @ Father Ted being #1, not likely. For better or worse my money's on Simpsons or Twin Peaks getting the gold.
Also, nice to see Futurama place, I wasnt expecting it to seeing as only S1 counted.
No Australian show placings though :(

for some reason ilx's Brit presence, and its cultural divide with the rest of the board, has seemed much more pronounced on the TV polls than it is with the film and music polls. the way some folks, lj especially, have been predicting things it's almost as if they think there were only UK voters in this thing.

Nothing like HIGNFY, except for being news related - it's painstakingly constructed skits rather than freewheeling riffs, and it satires the format and conventions of news programmes rather than topical stuff. Very beloved in this country, rightly so I think.

Loving the idea that two series as radically different as Friends and Spaced placed so high, where the attraction is purely about the tight writing and Swift-ian puns and not just because they was unfunny bollocks with characters that their respective audiences thought was role models.

i lost track of the show while at college because it was hard to see anything on Sky at that point. the video releases of the last 8 or so alien conspiracy episodes (up to Mulder's own abduction) ended up being the last VHS tapes i ever rented out, watched it all on a tiny TV at home over a weekend and it was strangely awesome.
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 10 December 2009 14:10 (sixteen years ago)
also seemed like unprecedented production values for a US drama back then - looked and felt like a movie quite often. its success surely paved the way for subsequent big expensive dramas, even the non-sci-fi ones, so its an important TV milestone imo.
― mdskltr (blueski), Thursday, 10 December 2009 14:12 (sixteen years ago)
Wow! I thought for sure it'd end up in the top ten, but it ended up pretty much where it should have. As everyone says: dated, not as good as was once hyped, etc.
and his final death scene has still probably not been matched for glorious OTT-ness
^^^This. Rarely does filmed entertainment go to such lengths to declare, "Yes, this character is irrevocably deceased!"
I was way more into the bullshit at the time because I thought it was going somewhere. But at a certain point it became clear that they were making it up as they went along, and they weren't even doing that good a job of making it up. So upon rewatching the series, the standalone eps most definitely took the cake.

King of the Hill was my number 2, could have been my number 1 on another day. Absolutely unparalleled in its depth and humanity imo. Sure the Simpsons is more iconic/quotable but King of the Hill is just an endless bathtub of delight and lols. Also Dale Gribble is one of the great villains in any medium, ever. SHIT IS REAL.

― it's like 10,000 goons when all you need is a trife (m bison), Thursday, 10 December 2009 15:21 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I sometimes wonder what would be lost/gained by it being a live action sitcom. Of course mainly what you'd lose is Judge's beautiful art.
― Noodle. Tool. 2. Kool (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 10 December 2009 15:23 (sixteen years ago)
Best theme tune ever as well.
― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 December 2009 15:23 (sixteen years ago)
Everything seemed to take place in a warm sunset glow, which would be hard to achieve with live action. It would definitely have had quite a different atmosphere.
― Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Thursday, 10 December 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)
the geography of KOTH is rly important because so many of those kinds of suburbs in texas are kind of small town values but not the same degree of isolation or distance from city life/values, so you get lots of great conflict and lols from guest characters like bobby's eco-warrior history teacher (paul giamatti was the voice iirc) or the kind of namby-pamby soccer coach (will ferrell) or various bureacrats. there is kind of a simmering tension between those forces in a lot of episodes that can only come in the kind of suburb they live in.

Yeah and I think the show almost always judges its level of didacticism perfectly - there are very few DO YOU SEE moments of the kind that ruined a lot of South Park (no matter how knowing that show tries to be about them).

Northern Exposure almost made my list, it was always fun and cosy when I bothered to watch it. But the 90s was the first decade of my life when I usually had another agenda than sitting in front of the telly so there aren't too many shows on the list where I wd actively make plans to watch them religiously.

Oh, Beavis & Butthead. See, this is one that I didn't really appreciate at the time. I watched it sporadically, but I think I thought it was just stupid. I watched pretty much the entire series recently and realized, no, it's stupid and it's brilliant. It's almost zen-like in its utter commitment to the stupidity of its protagonists. It takes some keen focus and a level of purity to maintain that over the course of so many years.

R&S is genuinely incredible, on the whole, if flawed (the flow of dialogue and timing was often pretty poor, certainly in the early ones). Huge imagination visually and conceptually but the big lols are all from pretty basic reduced moments - facial expressions, randomly weird voices and similar traditional tropes just ramped up to 111. Excellent music used throughout too, from Tchaikovsky to Raymond Scott.

what is this rubbish about kirk not being the best captain? i watched star trek II the other night, it is clearly the greatest film of all time. singular episodes of the original series make up my childhood. i remember my parents watching the next generation when it premiered and thinking, what is this boring crap? whereas wrath of khan scared me so bad i couldn't sleep (the bug- in-ear part, naturally). deep space nine and voyager are even worse. it's like if they made 'the prisoner: the next generation' with some bald dumbass replacing mcgoohan, and then made two more that were even worse shit. the original is one of the greatest television shows of all time and now it has been diluted to a bad punchline by greedy cash-ins. fuck paramount.

ned: you think picard is tougher than picard. what. the. fuck. did you see wrath of khan? did you see that shit? he fucking kicked khan's fucking vinyl-chested ass. 'oh, yeah, you have genesis, khan but you don't have me. if you want me, you're going to have to come down here. you're GOING to HAVE to COME DOWN HERE!!!@#@@!$#'. you can say ANYTHING ELSE about kirk vs. picard, picard is smarter and more civil and professional or whatever the fuck, but nobody in their right fucking mind would say that he's tougher than motherfucking kirk. i am actually literally angry about this, so i need to calm down now. christ, i'm such a trekkie.

Star Trek: Classic or Dud?
Anyway, great thread, everyone should read
It's so slow and earnest and boring though
picked up by season 2/3. some of the episodes are the best headfuck moments in the history of tv.

Do you know what, I like the US/UK divide and diversity and rampant bad taste on this poll
otm, it's kinda great. I've been watching bits of Mr Show and Spaceghost for the last half hour, neither of which I'd seen before (although somehow I don't think many American's will be saying the same about Vic and Bob and "This Week I Have Been Mostly...").

Fast Show was funny and still is when I see it on Dave. I have mostly hated post-TFS sketch shows though, due to them just stealing the worst elements of it (umm, basically catchphrases instead of writing actual jokes). Armstrong&Miller are alright at times though, I guess.

^j/k, Yanks.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Larry Sanders was my number 1, too, NV. Total travesty that it wasn't at least top ten, but I guess we can blame that on the fact that it's relatively unavailable. But it really is one of the best shows ever. I can't say it enough. ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS EVER!
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 10 December 2009 17:16 (sixteen years ago)
Shandling, Torn, and Tambor are probably the best trio in the history of television.

We're patently not going to see A Bit of Fry & Laurie in this, are we? Or Absolutely? Which is probably fair enough, given that the 1989 debut series of each were probably as good as they got.
Very pleased to see My So-Called Life and King of the Hill in here.

I figure that Ricky Gervais must know Larry Sanders backwards and in that regard you could argue it's responsible for the now-dying fly on the wall sitcom style buy my god this show did it best.

Homicide is a beautiful thing. The first two seasons are some of the best network TV of the '90s. I still haven't gotten around to watching some of the later, less well regarded seasons, so maybe my opinion is skewed somewhat.
Also worth noting (as I noted in the revived Homicide thread): Amazon currently has the complete series for 60% off. Pretty sure I'm gonna jump on that shit.

― 102. LJ: British. 5. (acoleuthic), Thursday, 10 December 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)
oh wait, brass eye XD
It's important to differentiate Homicide from the common police procedural. It's not as dense and varied as The Wire, but it's more along those lines. It's mostly just a "these are some people who work a hard and often thankless and sometimes rewarding job, and this is the effect it has on their lives" drama.
Also worth noting that it's not super-heavy and involved in the Wire vein. You can dip in and out much more easily. Seriously, do yourself a favor and watch the first two seasons (which is only, like, 16 or 18 episodes total).
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 10 December 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

the American stuff on this poll is really lining up with my taste well, so far 11 shows from my ballot have appeared, plus 3 that will definitely appear later and 2 shows that were on my '00s ballot. by comparison 13 shows from my ballot were in the '00s poll.
i've lost all hope of seeing The Tick, SNL, Get A Life, Dr. Katz or Boy Meets World in the poll, though, which bums me out.
― some dude, Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)
I just don't think SNL is gonna make it on any of these polls, unless maybe if there's an '80s poll. It doesn't seem decade-specific enough and it's generally too spotty to make it into the top slots. That mid to late-'80s run, though, is pretty unimpeachable.
― Pooping And Crying (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:19 (sixteen years ago)
SNL would definitely make my '80s list, partly because I'm not sure I could even come up with 25 '80s shows ... because I was a child and I refuse to include the stuff I actually watched then, like Alf and Family Matters and the like.
― real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:22 (sixteen years ago)
And Get A Life is another show that suffers from not having received a proper DVD release. I was one of the twelve people who watched it when it was on, and I've since tracked down the complete series torrents. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't know much of anything about it.
― Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:23 (sixteen years ago)
that seems like an odd thing to say given that a) surely the show would do better in a '70s poll and b) most of the cast members that defined the show in the mid and late '80s were on it well into the '90s. xpost
― some dude, Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:24 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I honestly wonder how much mileage we'd get out of an '80s poll. It would surely be even more infantile than this one. Ha ha ha. I can think of a few more mature shows I'd vote for, though, for sure.
― Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:25 (sixteen years ago)
A 70s poll would be good. Dr Who and Fawlty Towers ftw.

a) Althought I like it fine, I'm not personally the biggest fan of the '70s cast of SNL, and b) after the first couple of years, the first half of the '90s was a slow decline for SNL.
― Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:28 (sixteen years ago)
yeah but late 90s SNL >>>>> early 80s SNL
― some dude, Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)
I feel like a 70s poll wd drive the transAtlantic wedge in even further as I feel like less shows crossed from the UK to the US back then. Are You Being Served and Benny Hill iirc.
Also wd vote Rockford Files over the mummified corpse of Fawlty Towers.

― Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

i think Cosby Show is thought of enough as an '80s show, and its '90s seasons are thought of enough as "the Raven Symone era," that it could totally miss this poll.

As I said, Red Dwarf was flawed but when on song it brought the lolz, Fast Show was a lot more flaw than lol, plus I really dislike the sentimentalizing of sketch comedy, plus it placed stupidly high on here against vastly superior shows, so I didn't feel like breaking out the measured responses to it.

I'm trying to stop banging on anyway. I've said why I don't like it, other people do, bully for them. I was just answering yr question about why I'd still got time for Red Dwarf and not for 90 percent of Fast Show. I didn't vote for either of them, which sums it up really.

new SP is still better than approx 98% of what's on TV, and every now and again they produce something truly jaw-dropping

The movie is the peak for me. Unfettered brilliance.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 11 December 2009 14:18 (sixteen years ago)
The SP Lord Of The Rings parody was golden, and mostly because the script rested on re-creating the atmosphere of the movie rather than five fart gags a minute.
― HUH? not appropriate (snoball), Friday, 11 December 2009 14:19 (sixteen years ago)
the movie is what converted me on south park. i'd seen scattered episodes up to that point and was skeptical, but the movie was so good it made me go back to the series and find the good ones, of which there are plenty.

I just love how informal, how low-budget, how improvised IAP S1 feels, even if it was fairly meticulous in its execution. I loved that show when I was 7. Last year I was watching Avatar: The Last Airbender re-runs and I all of the sudden remembered the show. I've been wondering lately if it was as good as I remember it.
The only highlight that sticks in my mind though is that the team runs into these people with torches, and the people tell them that the torches are fueled by llama dung. Then one of the kids has a thought bubble featuring a llama taking a dump. Am I thinking of the right show?

― kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 11 December 2009 15:10 (sixteen years ago)
The reason I prefer TDT is that it's completely consistent and zanily inspired from start to finish, whereas the Sex, Science and Animals BE episodes, while they have awesome moments, are also a bit forced and unfunny in stretches. Like I say, though, those three other episodes were *brilliant*

Didn't vote for South Park this time out because I was sticking with the 'vote for what actually aired in the '90s' thing. The first two seasons were pretty decent, but not great. The movie was off the charts great, and later seasons were spottily spectacular. "Scott Tenorman Must Die" might possibly have my favorite ending to any comedy thing ever.

I think I put Brass Eye above The Day Today, though I'm not entirely sure. They were my number one and number three, though, in a top three where each one jostled for position. Also, TOO LOW. Much as I love Buffy, it really shouldn't be beating Chris Morris. And no hope for The Kingdom now - but I think that we should all repoll with it on the list with both names, as I for one had completely forgotten that it was called Riget.

― kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 11 December 2009 15:35 (sixteen years ago)
The problem with Buffy is that the premise is so inherently ridiculous that it keeps the nonbelievers away and makes the fans doubt its quality when they've been away from it for a while. But it's all about the execution of that premise, and it's executed beautifully. I've seen the vast majority of it twice through, and it holds up. Also noteworthy for being a show that I've turned a number of people with a "What, that garbage?" attitude onto. Including myself, quite frankly.

people fail to realise, IMO, just how much fr ted is observational drama rather than invented comedy.

As I said above, I do like Father Ted a lot, but I'm not sure where this torrent of love and admiration has come from on ILx. There's no way it's better than Chris Morris at his best, guys, come on.
― emil.y, Friday, 11 December 2009 16:21 (sixteen years ago)
no surprise- it was tipped for top 3 pretty much since the poll started up.

I watch Brass Eye for the umpteenth time and I find more things to admire, but I don't do much actual laughing. I watch Father Ted for the umpteenth time and I laugh almost as hard as the first time I saw it. It's one of the most unique and immersive comic universes ever created.
― Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Friday, 11 December 2009 16:26 (sixteen years ago)
Having said that, I did give more points to Brass Eye.
― Communi-Bear Silo State (chap), Friday, 11 December 2009 16:27 (sixteen years ago)
I love the ridiculous rating system at work here - 5280 points!
Father Ted knocks everything Chris Morris has ever done into a cocked hat, and I really like Chris Morris (in the 90s at any rate). What works in its favour is absolute bucketloads of charm, pretty hard to come by in 90s Brit comedy.
― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Friday, 11 December 2009 16:29 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, Morris is smarter, Ted is a heck of a lot more lovable.

it's not really any more divisive than any show of its stature, you just think that because you're in the inevitable minority that doesn't like it. Buffy, to name just one example, is way way more divisive.

It's such a thuddingly obvious canonical choice but also probably exactly the right one given that the 90s Simpsons has given me more hours of enjoyment than anything else on this thread several times over.
― Space Battle Rothko (Matt DC), Friday, 11 December 2009 16:41 (sixteen years ago)
Oh, and thanks to everyone who voted, commented or lurked. Hope you've enjoyed yourselves, I have.

Wot no Fist of Fun - That was my #1, I imagine it could be a bit dated looking back now but it influenced my young sense of humour so much and S Lee has turned out to be a great stand-up.
Still, some of these US shows that I've never seen look half-decent, going to look into a few of these.

I think I rated The Simpsons a little lower than I might've because...it's like someone that you're really close to and really good friends with for the better part of a decade. But then the relationship started souring slowly. And you could've just drifted apart and been okay with things, except that maybe you work in the same place or live in the same building, so you're constantly reminded of things going sour and how things aren't the same anymore, so you can never quite look back at the good times fondly without some taint of the sad way things ended up. That's what it's like.

#55 and #63 for the two best sketches show of...well, 1989 actually, but they were decent into the '90s. Hurrah.
No Lipstick on Your Collar, Karaoke or Cold Lazarus, but Potter gets in via his Bragg interview? That's the one where he was swigging liquid morphine, right?
― Michael Jones, Friday, 11 December 2009 17:31 (sixteen years ago)
I'm glad Smack The Pony made it into the top 100. I felt bad that it didn't make it onto either my '90s or '00s ballot, but it really is good stuff.
― Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 11 December 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)
My top 10 is probably the most canonical of all the ballots - only one didn't place, and most of the others went top 10:
1. Brass Eye2. Twin Peaks3. The Day Today4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer5. Riget6. G.B.H.7. The Simpsons8. I’m Alan Partridge9. Father Ted10. Ren & Stimpy
Riget was hurriedly stuffed into the number five slot on my resubmitted ballot, when it was called to my attention as being The Kingdom, but probably should have been number four. It is brilliant.

This might be where the unbreachable schism between US and UK television begins. I've tried watching it, but it felt foreign enough that my brain was barely able to process it. Maybe it was just the accents...

Disappointed Bab5 didnt get any showing but it was a niche show even at the time. And though I dont like it how the heck is AbFab not in here?
But you all cant complain too much: even Canada got a look in, but not a single Australian show did. And I gave high votes to several. I'm pretty unhappy at that.

^^this certainly. i had no idea Father Ted was even a "respected" show, have only seen tiny bits and not been impressed. my faith in ilx is so grand though that i will give it a fair try. Simpsons was my #1 btw
― sonderangerbot, Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:04 (sixteen years ago)

i don't get 'tactical voting' at all. why not just put things in the order you actually like them and let the dice fall where they may?
― some dude, Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:07 (sixteen years ago)
Well yeah true. There's a couple of shows I'd like to have given equal first place to but that's gaming the system I suppose, ha.
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)
Speaking as an American, there's very little Australian telly that I'm even aware of. The last Australian thing I watched was that new-ish sitcom about the ad agency. Which I can't even remember the name of, apparently...
― Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:10 (sixteen years ago)
@ sd because u genuinely care abt a niche show and want more ppl to hear about it? or bcz u would like the list overall to better reflect your taste?
― Lamp, Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:11 (sixteen years ago)
Father Ted looks pretty dire to me. I think I tried to watch an episode when I lived in the UK and gave up pretty quickly.
― real bears playing hockey (polyphonic), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:13 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I guess. I knew Simpsons didn't need my vote but it just would've felt weird if I didn't put it in the top 3 where it really belonged in my heart of hearts. I suppose if I'd voted more tactically The Adventures of Pete & Pete would've jumped a place or two and made it into the top 50, but there was no way of knowing that show of all shows on my ballot was on the borderline like that.
When I was in Australia last year the only native show I watched much of was some funny thing w/ people improvising and riffing on current news headlines.
― some dude, Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:13 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, just in logistical terms...I at least have access to a killer British television torrent site, so I can poke around and try out stuff that I've never heard of and would never have had any access to otherwise. I'm not even aware of an Australian analogue, although I'm sure one exists.
― Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:17 (sixteen years ago)

― Zoo Snickers (Deric W. Haircare), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:20 (sixteen years ago)
Newsish sitcom about ad agency? Not Frontline? Or perhaps um... er heh.
surely everyone knows Kath and Kim? (or was that a 00's show only?)The stuff I voted for I assume is more local: anything Sean Micallef-branded is highly recommended though.
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Saturday, 12 December 2009 01:43 (sixteen years ago)
We also have http://www.abc.net.au/iview/ however, like the BBC version I imagine its region-restricted.
Shows I recommend: Frontline, Kath and Kim, Micallef Program, Full Frontal (esp if you're interested in Eric Bana before he got a fat head). Some other stuff's too dated and localised: the Late Show, Acropolis Now, etc
Oh! Mother & Son is very good (but thats an 80s show I think?)

Shame if so, he'd go over well in the UK i reckon.
Its curious that the US and UK each seem fairly focussed on their own countries tv and are unaware of each other's shows outside of big guns like Simpsons/Seinfeld etc... Australia otoh is inundated with tons of both. At the expense of much of our own programming, sadly. For example at the moment one channel's biggest rating show is "2 and a half men" ffs.
― millivanillimillenary (Trayce), Sunday, 13 December 2009 00:38 (sixteen years ago)
I think the UK is more aware of US shows than the other way round, tbh. I am basing this on a very limited demographic of me and people I talk about telly programmes with, right enough, so this may be way off.
I might be the only person on ILX who likes Two and a Half Men. It consistently brings the lols.
― ailsa, Sunday, 13 December 2009 00:40 (sixteen years ago)
No, I like it too. And it's the highest rated (comedy) show in the US too, so it's not like Australian popularity is a fluke.

I dont mind it tbh :) My ffs was more the fact its always US comedies we're flooded with here. And on ABC, all the UK shows. Any of our own? Hardly. Its no wonder no one's seen any Aus TV, there isnt any! :/
