it got tim smith of cardiacs after a load of REALLY vague questions and one incorrect guess (elvis costello)#
o_OOOO
i think the beauty of this thing is that every time someone plays it, it gets better and obtains a wider database

― aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:19 (fifteen years ago)
It got Mr. Hat pretty quick but it asked in two different ways if he wore a hat, which made me laugh.
― mascara and ties (Abbott), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:20 (fifteen years ago)
This is like the 20 questions thing my kids own and I guess how the algorithms kinda work but it's pretty mind-blowing when it guesses Leopold Bloom from some quite vague questions.
― Noodle. Tool. 2. Kool (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:21 (fifteen years ago)
I beat him with Stephen Pastel.

― aarrissi-a-roni, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:26 (fifteen years ago)
Ha NV the first time I picked up that 20 questions game my friend thought of 'pussy' and it asked for its final question, 'Is it pussy willow?' ("Does it bring great joy to many people?" "Yes.")
― mascara and ties (Abbott), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

I just beat this guy with Félix Guattari so I can sleep soundly now.

a) "obscure"b) it adds to the database so it can improve in futurec) he told me I beat him

― a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 05:04 (fifteen years ago)
i set it 'tracey jacks' from the blur song of the same name and its final guess was major tom, another character from a song
which is itself pretty impressive

looooool clicking 'i don't know' over and over again gets you 'the one nothing is known about' then if you carry on clicking 'i don't know' you get 'broccoli dog' then if you carry on clicking 'i don't know' you get 'mrs x' then if you carry on the the end you get 'i don't know man' and then in the table of options i saw felix guattari so i clicked on him and thus noodle vague's work is done

gave him another chance and he guessed Roisin Murphy, which holy shit how???
― wtf?!? just randomly started crying! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 23:30 (fifteen years ago)
Like I did MF Doom and it was way off then suddenly went right to "Does your character wear a mask?" and "Does your character sing about food a lot?" so I knew where that was heading... the Bubbles one just popped out of nowhere.

got gucci mane real damn quick, with no obviously gucci-specifying questions. except maybe the one about "is your character famous because of the internet? yes." still, kinda terrifying.
akinator was soundly defeated by plies however.

― HUH? not appropriate (snoball), Thursday, 10 December 2009 11:26 (fifteen years ago)
Every time I "beat" it, the name of the person is not on the list of close matches, but after typing it in it's on the list of names it knows - does this mean my answers don't agree with what previous players have said about those people?
"Probably" doubles up as "partially", which I guess is why someone clicked it.
(Just beat it w/Georges Perec, wasn't sure if "is your character Eastern European?" was worth a "partially" or a "no" - guy was native French son of Polish immigrants. Think I went for "partially" in the end since I had already said he was French about 3 times)

I said to someone last night that I had this on my Apple IIe, and it was called "Animals," and my "fun" uncle and his friends had a ball drinking beer and making up the weirdest wrongest things in their addled brains and feeding it to the computer until the game was almost unplayable. This version of the game, when it gave up, would ask you to enter your own questions. Oh, it was a mess.

(TBF it might have got Troilus if I hadn't said "no" to the question abt "Greek origins" - I guess you have to answer as most ppl would)
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Friday, 11 December 2009 17:06 (fifteen years ago)
The age questions for sportspeople kinda suck - it's gonna get an incredibly strong "yes" weighting for 'is this character aged 20-25' for, say, Adrian Peterson, that it's gonna have to unlearn in a few years.
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Friday, 11 December 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago)
How do you add questions and pictures?
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Friday, 11 December 2009 17:22 (fifteen years ago)
Interesting. I just used him without knowing that you did it earlier. It took way longer and one incorrect guess (Holden Caufield).
― kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 11 December 2009 17:24 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think you can for either. I assume whoever is behind the game adds pics as new characters are added to the database if there's top google hits for the characters name. Ned is obviously famous enough for AMG while LJ isn't.

xpost - I think it took two tries. There was a short, coincidental lag after it went through those instruments, which made it seem as if the algorithm were eying me skeptically. But, you know, unless it's going to ask me about dancing or hand percussion, the answer to whether Bez does anything is just gonna keep being no

Hang on, I just had "is your character gay" "no" "is your character homosexual" as two consecutive questions. It also keeps asking things like "is your character from a Balkan country" after I've already said they are from Australia.
It got Anton Du Beke after 30 questions, but the first guess was Barry Scott from the Cillit Bang adverts.
― ailsa, Saturday, 12 December 2009 20:52 (fifteen years ago)
It also keeps asking things like "is your character from a Balkan country" after I've already said they are from Australia.
To get people for whom users answer incorrectly, it can't trust the answers its given absolutely (for instance, it got Nadine Coyle even though I unthinkingly said 'yes' to "is this person English". So if the only thing separating your Harry Kewell from its Hristo Stoichkov is that you said 'yes' to 'are they australian', it needs to check, and it knows that "are they from a Balkan country" is a good way of doing that?

Right? This thing wastes questions like Americans waste food. And it seems to ask the same questions or contradictory questions ("Is your character green?" "Yes." "Is your character orange?") all the time. Still, it's beat me on a number of seemingly obscure attempts (I toughened it up after my first few attempts, which it guessed all too quickly).
