IT IS TIME

rules:

- vote for 40 films either from the list of nominations OR you may write in films that are not listed. go ahead and lobby for the ones you don't see. don't feel restricted by the list.

- the votes are broken down pretty easily: 40 pts for 1st place, 39 for second, etc all the way down to 1 pt for 40th place.

- submit the ballots in the format below:

Darkness Falls - 40pts
Halloween 2 - 39pts
Orphan - 38pts
Battlefield Earth - 37pts

and so on.

This will make tallying a lot easier for me and the results can get out a lot faster.

VOTING CLOSES ON GROUNDHOG DAY! IRL IT DOESN'T REPEAT SO NO LATE BALLOTS!

send your ballot to ilx2000sfilm AT gmail.com

The nominees are at the site below:

(jk, jk)

thanks so much for doing this!

y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Monday, 4 January 2010 21:15 (fifteen years ago)

Darkness Falls - 40

This means 40 points for "Darkness Falls" (ie., 1st place) - not 40th place for "Darkness Falls" (ie., 1 point), right?

o. nate, Monday, 4 January 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

Is it fair to count Kill Bill vols. 1 and 2 as two separate films? That's like voting on different acts of a play.

Without Curves, I would feel deflated. I like Curves. They are best. (Stevie D), Monday, 4 January 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

yes, xpost. i will ask a mod to clarify that though

Two Dark Knights? Two The Class's (one under french title, one in english)?

Or I could be wrong.

y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Monday, 4 January 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

i'm down to 118 films

y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Monday, 4 January 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

what if i dont want to vote for darkness falls :(

meryl streep post-brazilian (s1ocki), Monday, 4 January 2010 21:39 (fifteen years ago)

I don't see Revolutionary Road + Sweeney Todd on the list -- I'm voting for both, so I figured I'd mention them here in case anyone else wants to vote for them.

Mordy, Monday, 4 January 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

those films listed as examples are actually the only four nominees, i'm afraid.

A™ machine (sic) (omar little), Monday, 4 January 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

well I already submitted a list of 100 today but it's subject to change.

Surprised that "Wendy and Lucy" made it, but "Old Joy" didn't.

o. nate, Monday, 4 January 2010 22:10 (fifteen years ago)

OR you may write in films that are not listed

Ah, just saw this.

o. nate, Monday, 4 January 2010 22:27 (fifteen years ago)

Other missing ones I may vote for: "Goodbye Solo" and "Hors de Prix"

o. nate, Monday, 4 January 2010 22:46 (fifteen years ago)

I'm a bit late, but Netflix's online selection is pretty great!

anyone going for order of myths or forbidden lies or iraq in fragments?

y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 00:55 (fifteen years ago)

billy the kid? american teen?

y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

I'm gonna do this, but I'm glad you left such a big voting window.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)

voted for spellbound, grizzly man, parrots of telegraph hill, capturing the friedmans, and the devil & daniel johnston

Darin, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 02:01 (fifteen years ago)

Can't remember if we're using IMDB as a guide for dates, but if so Audition is 1999 (assuming it's the Miike Takashi one)

Ork Alarm (Matt #2), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

USA 11 June 2000 (Seattle International Film Festival)

y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 02:52 (fifteen years ago)

OK. Sonatine is from 1993 though, should be taken out I guess.

Ork Alarm (Matt #2), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

Def keep Audition on. As far as docs, I'll prolly throw Order of Myths some points, that and Capturing the Friedmans.

maciej recognizing trill, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

awesome.

doesn't ilx like lantana?

y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 03:15 (fifteen years ago)

sonatine was my fault, noted on the nominating thread. i was just scrolling thru my netflix ratings for anything i gave 4 or 5 stars to, and for whatever reason netflix has that with a 2000s date. it is definitely a '90s film.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 03:33 (fifteen years ago)

Election is from '99 too

big Order Of Myths fan, not enough to vote for it. Kind of a minor treasure. Out of my own personal Immortal 10 I'll stan here for Head-On. That film's a live wire, go watch it!

Cosmo Vitelli, Tuesday, 5 January 2010 04:08 (fifteen years ago)

ok, this is enough to make me vote for OoM (for those who haven't seen it, you can watch it online @ Netflix)

y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 04:53 (fifteen years ago)

'sonatine' removed, 'election' clarified (johnnie to gangster film that basically owns; sequel is triad election, also listed)

A™ machine (sic) (omar little), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 05:17 (fifteen years ago)

can I submit and unordered ballot?

America's Next Most Disabled Ballerina (WmC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

AN unordered ballot

America's Next Most Disabled Ballerina (WmC), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 16:04 (fifteen years ago)

if i'm not mistaken, 1-40 adds up to 820, so that would work out to 20.5 points per film. if you want to submit an unordered ballot, that's ok with me. just put 20.5 pts after each film title.

also, someone has already submitted a ballot with less than 40 films, and if anyone else wants to do that it's ok. i'd just ask for at least 20 films on your list.

A™ machine (sic) (omar little), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 16:39 (fifteen years ago)

okay sorry i slept on the nominations because i totally thought these jerks would come through, but now I see that Head-On, Best Of Youth (miniseries, might not count?), Chop Shop, and The Dreamers are all missing from the list. i was def voting for these, and possibly maybe considering voting for The Celebration, Reprise, and L'enfant, also m.i.a.

The Science of Sleep

xpost Yeah, Tape Store's list of docs alone will have me busy.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

do you have to vote for 40 movies? trying to arrange a list of 40 movies is annoying.

Michael B, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

someone has already submitted a ballot with less than 40 films, and if anyone else wants to do that it's ok. i'd just ask for at least 20 films on your list.

Just a quick question : there are two The New World in the list. Which one is the Mallick film and what is the other one?

Jibe, Wednesday, 6 January 2010 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

haha, xpost, don't watch AMERICAN TEEN unless you love MTV (i do)

y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Thursday, 7 January 2010 02:15 (fifteen years ago)

tipz, i would go with mostly watching stuff you thought was great but haven't seen in 4-10 years.

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 January 2010 02:20 (fifteen years ago)

i won't have much to watch after this week, anyone want to campaign? If it's viewable on Netflix, I'll almost certainly take a look
(I'll be watching pulse, miami vice, together and femme fatale in the next few days)

Here are the docs I'm pushing:
Order of Myths
Iraq in Fragments
My Winnipeg
Manda Bala (Send a Bullet)
Billy the Kid (this is a divisive film but unlike american teen, the consensus seems to be 'classic')

would push for Forbidden Lies but i only know of two ilxors who have seen it
also love Summercamp! but I doubt others will like it enough

y tu mama ambien (Tape Store), Thursday, 7 January 2010 02:22 (fifteen years ago)

I forgot how much I liked Vicky Cristina Barcelona until seeing among the nominations.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 7 January 2010 05:59 (fifteen years ago)

Did no one nominate any of James Gray's films? Can't see them on the list. I thought people loved him! Could I belatedly nominate Two Lovers?

Immovable Fiesta (Adept), Thursday, 7 January 2010 10:52 (fifteen years ago)

There's always hope, tipz!

Two Lovers has a great lead peformance but I'm not sure it's among the 200 best films of the '00s.

(The numbers pile up quickly if you're not enrique and acknowledge foreign films.)

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 January 2010 11:39 (fifteen years ago)

i'll throw in two lovers

Does Trapped in the Closet count?

Fetchboy, Thursday, 7 January 2010 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

16 '00s docs I loved, A-Z:

Agronomist, The: Jonathan Demme doc about Haitian radio pioneer Jean Dominique was in progress when the subject was assassinated, but the story doesn't end there. I mostly remember Dominique's charisma, and a rare cinematic look at our most invaded and devastated 51st state, with a soundtrack by Wyclef Jean.

Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer: Best Nick Broomfield doc (Biggie & Tupac), because there's actually something pressing at stake with his gawky, interventionist style. To be seen back-to-back with Monster.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil: Most cheering and moving of a great decade for metal docs (Some Kind of Monster, Atlas Moth).

Fog of War, The: Dubious, self-justifying half-apology from a war criminal without proper follow-up questions, but it makes for vintage Errol Morris/Phillip Glass drama. Best Vietnam doc of the decade was actually the release on DVD of 1972's Winter Soldier. Also rent Sir! No Sir!, which, among other things, systematically dispels the "hippies spitting on returning soldiers" myth.

Forever: If you see only one documentary about talking to people in a cemetery... No, seriously, Heddy Honigmann is the Richard Linklater of nonfiction dialogue, spinning amazing talk out of nothing more than curiosity, sociability, and her ability to ask good questions--in this case in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris. One of the best films about death in this or any decade. Just out on DVD in 2009.
http://www.amazon.com/Forever-n/dp/B001RVA1QO

Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees: Grizzly Man sticks in your craw because it goes to work on your dread center, and was ultimately haunted by its subject's mania and solitude rather than anything he observed through his own camera--though that footage was amazing. This doc, with its relatively un-conflicted relationship between observer and observed, is actually about the animals, who turn out to be a wordless, naked version of ourselves, down to the wars they make, and their own problems with isolation and social connection.

Los Angeles Plays Itself: Endlessly playable and very personal polemic, a narrated montage of scenes from movies set in Los Angeles that makes you think about place and representation everywhere. Not yet available on DVD, and probably will never be, but you can borrow my copy if you're in Minneapolis:
petescholtes "at" gmail
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379357/

My Architect: You don't have to entirely feel for the abandoned son who made this doc about his architectural-giant father (Louis Kahn) to admire the almost architectural structure of the film's unfolding mystery, its music, and its feat of making buildings compelling cinema.

North Korea: A Day in the Life: Exactly what it's title says, somehow snuck by authorities as a supposedly positive examination of living in the last large totalitarian stronghold, but ultimately a by-turns dryly funny, horrifying, and almost sci-fi-striking look.

Original Kings of Comedy, The: Best Spike Lee film of the decade, though all the others are worth seeing, plus Bernie Mac's shining moment.

Paradise Lost 2: Revelations: Where "did they or didn't they" becomes a cultural examination of guilt-by-weirdness, just as suspenseful and absorbing.

Revolution Will Not Be Televised, The [a.k.a. Chavez: Inside the Coup]: Not quite a real-life Z, but close: There's a blatantly-U.S.-backed coup against a democratically elected but left-leaning leader in Venezuela, and a documentary film crew shooting Chavez when it all happens, that sticks around long enough to see the popular retaking of the palace. The filmmakers are in the right place at the right time, but also skillful. Which should have been a hit, but it never got distribution or a DVD release--still un-televised:
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article11167.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Revolution_Will_Not_Be_Televised_%28documentary%29

Bowling for Columbine: Sicko was arguably Moore's most important and persuasive polemic, but this had the more original insight, and it stays with you beyond its set pieces (e.g. walking into unlocked doors in Canada), which actually add up.

Trouble the Water: Gripping footage by a Fifth Ward resident of her experience of the flood in New Orleans, but an even more compelling camera-observed story about her heroism, redemption, and community afterward, with all of her pain rapped into a song near the end. Musically structured and memorable, but I guess overshadowed by the sensation of Man on Wire amid Katrina fatigue. Also love When the Levees Broke, but consider it TV.

Westway to the World: Don't know about best, but my most treasured of many good punk docs this decade, in part because the Clash are as compelling as older people as they were as a band. To be seen with Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten and Filth and the Fury.

Yes Men, The: Borat with a point, this is irony used as the Civil Rights movement understood it, actually turning an issue on its head, amped up to the level of Situationist comedy: Guys pretending to represent the World Trade Organization give increasingly ridiculous lectures to seminar crowds that don't seem phased, until they try it with college students and get a rise. Probably seems less fresh after a decade of prank media, but it's still my favorite anti-corporate doc in a decade full of good ones (The Take, Mondovino, Power Trip), and the inspired nexus of several forces for documentary good, including Chris Smith (Home Movie) and Sarah Price (Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love).

Also memorable:

DiG!
Gaza Strip
No End in Sight
Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy
Spellbound
Venus of Mars
White Diamond, The

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 7 January 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

Ha, Bowling for Columbine out of alphabetical order because I switched it in for Sicko. Struggled with including Man on Wire, which bugs me but you gotta see it.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 7 January 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

Oh, and I liked The Kings of Kong, I just felt the end was kind of facile and botched.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 7 January 2010 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

liked Aileen and Agronomist, but White Diamond is my #1 among the ones you mentioned.

(again. more 'essay' than doc)

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 7 January 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

Probably about half the films I saw in the 2000s were documentaries. Ones I loved from the previous posts: Man on Wire, Spellbound, Porn Star, My Architect. Liked: Fog of War and Los Angeles Plays Itself (but not as much as most people). Michael Moore is...fun. Sometimes. Some random suggestions for Pete Scholtes: The Heart of the Game, The True Meaning of Pictures, Harvard Ties Yale 29-29, Stevie, Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, A League of Ordinary Gentlemen.

clemenza, Thursday, 7 January 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

I dug A League of Ordinary Gentlemen (and Kong), will check out the rest.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 7 January 2010 20:09 (fifteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 10 January 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

Watched Best of Youth and Capturing the Friedmans this weekend, and loved them. Couldn't get through American Teen (kept wondering why they weren't reacting to the camera and finally figured out it was a Hills-type situation, ugh). Also watched Hero, which was one of those situations in martial arts wire-fu where it was so beautiful, it was funny. And with a better story (to my memory) than Crouching Tiger, though my memory is patchy.

What was the best Asian action film of the decade? Kill Bill Vol. 1?

P.S. I thought of Best of Youth as great television, which is how it originally appeared, though I know its international release changes things. Are Italians watching seasons of The Wire in some movie theater somewhere?

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 11 January 2010 04:58 (fifteen years ago)

Wait, so I nominate Hero.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 11 January 2010 04:59 (fifteen years ago)

hero is totally gorgeous but the overbearing nationalism is a bit much. it feels just this side of propaganda. was not at all a surprise when he choreographed the olympics ceremony.

also lol if anyone votes for either...

xpost: I love The Hills! I just love it as fiction.

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 11 January 2010 06:26 (fifteen years ago)

to be clear, groundhog day is 2 february (per wikipedia), right?

caek, Monday, 11 January 2010 06:27 (fifteen years ago)

I suppose this'd be the time to ask what Japanese horror fans' favored fave is too: I watched Ju-on (the 2002 one) and Ringu and love the set pieces you remember, but never really cared much about the characters, which is why I'm partial to the U.S. The Ring and even Dark Water (though I haven't seen the Japanese Dark Water--is it good?). Does that make me lame, American, or both?

In other Asian horror, I'd rep hard for The Host/Bong Joon-ho as one of the greatest films of the past decade, the comic/hysterical tone totally Jaws-genius and not at all detracting from the fact that that monster is barreling right at you from a blurry distance.

P.S. I thought of Best of Youth as great television, which is how it originally appeared, though I know its international release changes things. Are Italians watching seasons of The Wire in some movie theater somewhere?

― ┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Monday, January 11, 2010 1:24 AM (Yesterday) Bookmark

ju-on was first a tv movie in japan. shimizu made 2 of them, ju-on: the curse and ju-on: the curse 2. then the japanese theatrical film came out, which was called ju-on: the grudge. theatrical sequel was ju-on: the grudge 2.

ju-on: the grudge wasn't released on DVD in the US until the US remake was made, so they dropped "the grudge" from the title to avoid confusion.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 17:04 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, THE HURT LOCKER premiered in Canada in 2008, but everyone calls it a 2009 film--release date seems more important than festival premiere.

autotuna fish (Tape Store), Tuesday, 12 January 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

this is what i have for 'audition' re: release dates

Canada 6 October 1999 (VC Film Festival)
Netherlands 28 January 2000 (International Film Festival Rotterdam)
Japan 3 March 2000
USA 11 June 2000 (Seattle International Film Festival)
Canada 30 July 2000 (Fantasia Film Festival)
Australia 8 September 2000
Hong Kong 21 September 2000
Finland 22 September 2000 (Helsinki International Film Festival)
Hungary 7 October 2000 (Titanic International Filmpresence Festival)
UK 17 October 2000 (Raindance Film Festival)
Netherlands 19 October 2000
Germany 25 January 2001
UK 16 March 2001
Singapore 12 April 2001 (Singapore International Film Festival)
Turkey 29 April 2001 (Istanbul Film Festival)
Denmark 20 July 2001
USA 8 August 2001 (New York City, New York)
Belgium 15 August 2001
Greece 15 September 2001 (Athens Film Festival)
Canada 28 September 2001 (Calgary Film Festival)
Switzerland 15 November 2001 (German speaking region)
France 6 March 2002

i'll leave it on the list if only because it was released in japan in 2000 and while it looks to be a '99 from some sources, outside of the film fest it didn't play anywhere until 2000.

It is a very good film, but it didn't make my final forty. My criteria was pretty much based on entertainment value rather than 'quality' or 'importance' or what have you - I basically only picked movies I'd be happy to watch at nearly any time.

i guess i can't prevent folks from voting for them or nominating them, but i don't see the point of either since i feel like it also does a slight disservice to the shorts. i'd be curious about a short films poll or a thread devoted to short films. but anyway, people can vote for them if they are so inclined.

short films should get their own playground; of the paltry few i've seen this decade "A Stranger In Her Own City" is the definite fave. It's an off-the-cuff doc about a girl from Yemen. She's a 13-year-old superhero.

Cosmo Vitelli, Thursday, 14 January 2010 03:35 (fifteen years ago)

A modest proposal: Instead of moving forward from this poll by heading back to the 1930s (where we left off), we do a ILX top 100 short films poll. (Shorts being, for the sake of argument, movies less than one hour long.)

queen frostine (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 18:53 (fifteen years ago)

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

if anyone wants to send comments in the email, that's more than welcome. but i do think the number of threads devoted to this decade, the "detrius" threads, and threads devoted to specific films should make it all relatively easy.

no discussion of "oasis" here. i haven't made my ballot yet, but that could make it. anyone else rate it? i thought the characters were really well drawn, and the disabilities didn't seem like narrative devices (or oscar bait, like they would in an american version).

yeah, oasis is great. it's about middle of the pack on my ballot. I wish moon so-ri had had a stronger career. after she did oasis and a good lawyer's wife back-to-back, I was expecting her to become the distaff choi min-sik of korean cinema, but I don't think she was in anything of note after that.

a good lawyer's wife is in my top 10. it's one of my favorite korean films, but it never had distribution in the US. it's also hard to find an uncensored version of it in print on DVD. a damn shame. one of the most unsettling films I've ever seen.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

I would like everyone who hasn't voted to ~re-screen~ Nobody Knows if you haven't considered it. This film is really brutally intense and the lead kid is really incredible... one of my favorite performances of the 00s.

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)

I put MoM ahead of Zodiac too. But MoM was in my top ten so it was ahead of almost everything.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)

I put Dude, Where's My Car? ahead of both.

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:46 (fifteen years ago)

i would recommend a screening of MoM for anyone who hasn't seen in, especially if they plan on voting in this poll. also: the first 'election' film. i'm not saying votes for such films might make things even more interesting, i'm just saying.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:48 (fifteen years ago)

('_') (omar little), Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:10 (fifteen years ago)

triad is great but the first one really kicks a lot of ass

I'm FINNISH!!!! (s1ocki), Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:12 (fifteen years ago)

('_') (omar little), Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

I liked both, but the first is the far better film (mostly because the best characters died in the first one. . .)

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

that scene with the dogs in triad kinda gave me nightmares

('_') (omar little), Saturday, 23 January 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

so as someone who hasn't seen near-enough (new) non-u.s. films this decade -- and who's already voted -- what would people say are five from the noms list i should check out? (you can assume japanese exploitation flicks and most of the big-name euro directors have been covered.) for instance, and perhaps shamefully, all the korean films named in the last 30 posts are blind spots.

strongohulkingtonsghost, Saturday, 23 January 2010 16:21 (fifteen years ago)

strongohulkingtonsghost, Saturday, 23 January 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

if you like "disturbing"

'memories of murder'
'inside' aka 'À l’intérieur'
'election'
'triad election'
'martyrs'

it might still make top 10 mind

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Sunday, 24 January 2010 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

don't worry about that, LJ, i'm sure everyone who has voted will--in the next few months--see several films from the '00s that would have placed if they'd seen them in time (this is why i'm sure someone will run another ILX '00s poll in five more years.)

I'm not sure the Virgin Suicides (book) is about boys really, or at least, I suspect the film must be pretty different to give that impression. I've not seen it cus my gf warned me away&it seemed like a bad/odd book to adapt. I thought josh hartnett must make a good trip fontaine tho.

ogmor, Sunday, 24 January 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

('_') (omar little), Sunday, 24 January 2010 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

really don't want to submit a ballot; my viewing habits and tastes have changed *so* dramatically over the past 6 months that i'm terrified my list would omit tens of films i haven't seen that would easily displace what's there

you're joking, please tell me you're joking.

sarahel, Sunday, 24 January 2010 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

i'm not joking. but i am compiling a ballot. am not submitting it yet because i'm going to watch 'let the right one in' before submitting, just in case. it includes a movie i haven't seen but am in.

also cheers folks! just need to make sure i don't get stuck in a mulch of postwar european art-house :-/

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Sunday, 24 January 2010 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

what are you terrified of? It's not like your ballot will be tattooed on your chest for future romantic interests to point at and laugh.

sarahel, Sunday, 24 January 2010 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

i'm terrified of voting for movies that i'll regard as mediocre in a matter of months - but it's gotta be done

k3vin k., Monday, 25 January 2010 03:49 (fifteen years ago)

Pan's Labyrinth somewhat overrated del Toro.

Children of Men is way cornier, in a liberal stoner Dem way, than I had recalled.

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 January 2010 03:50 (fifteen years ago)

How could you have missed that the first time around?

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 25 January 2010 03:57 (fifteen years ago)

Lotsa distracting Dolby fireworks in the theater to take one's mind off it.

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 January 2010 03:59 (fifteen years ago)

At least it's about something besides other movies tho, eh.

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

I know. I'm a fan of both the movie and its lefty-but-still-kinda-Christ-loving undercurrent.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:01 (fifteen years ago)

I like CoM. Morbs, Mulholland Dr is your (and possibly my) #1 and a large part of that movie is about *film* imo. Do you draw a distinction between movies that are to some extent about film, and those that are about other films?

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

i liked the use of "Court of the Crimson King" in CoM - that was probably the best part.

sarahel, Monday, 25 January 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)

Mulholland Dr is about tons of deeply terrifying human traits, along with movies.

Still love the end credits of CoM wrapping up w/ "Cunts are still running the world..." I do LIKE the movie, it kind of billboards all its contemporary allusions alas.

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:07 (fifteen years ago)

If Mulholland doesn't take this poll, I'll be pretty shocked.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:10 (fifteen years ago)

i found it overwrought and dull, tbh.

sarahel, Monday, 25 January 2010 04:19 (fifteen years ago)

If Norbit doesn't take this poll, I'll be pretty shocked.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:22 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder what sarahel's opinions on Norbit are

your favorite toy dinosaur ruined my asshole (acoleuthic), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:23 (fifteen years ago)

Snakes on a Plane >>>> Mulholland Dr.

sarahel, Monday, 25 January 2010 04:24 (fifteen years ago)

There are not even any hot lesbian action in SoaP, WTF?!

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

Starting with Lost Highway, I've been bored with every David Lynch film I've seen, though I'd probably appreciate a David Lynch directed Snakes on a Plane 2

sarahel, Monday, 25 January 2010 04:27 (fifteen years ago)

If Norbit doesn't eat this poll, I'll be pretty shocked.

I've never been a huge Lynch fan TIL Mulholland Dr!

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

Sorta ditto, except Eraserhead.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

Well, and the entire Twin Peaks franchise.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

And Blue Velvet isn't exactly bad or anything.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:31 (fifteen years ago)

Come to think of it, Lynch has been pretty consistently entertaining. Good work, David Lynch.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:33 (fifteen years ago)

Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, and Elephant Man are the only Lynch movies I liked - Lost Highway was "get over your mid-life crisis motherfucker" for me, and then it just went downhill from there.

sarahel, Monday, 25 January 2010 04:37 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, it's a real shame people get to direct movies after they turn 35.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Monday, 25 January 2010 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

I'm sorry, but I've seen a lot better mid-life crisis movies than Lost Highway.

sarahel, Monday, 25 January 2010 04:45 (fifteen years ago)

go INLAND EMPIRE!

autotuna fish (Tape Store), Monday, 25 January 2010 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

i'm glad i don't ruin Lynch movies for myself by pretending they're just about his mid-life crisis. anyway, Eraserhead was a lot more mid-life-crisis-y than anything he's made since.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 25 January 2010 05:09 (fifteen years ago)

there's no pretending about it - that's how Lost Highway came across to me. The other aspects of that movie just weren't all that interesting.

sarahel, Monday, 25 January 2010 05:24 (fifteen years ago)

POLL RESULTS: TOP 100 FILMS OF THE 1990's

('_') (omar little), Monday, 25 January 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)

thx a lot!

Jibe, Monday, 25 January 2010 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

i *may* expand the list from 75 to 100 depending on how many ballots come in over the next week.

('_') (omar little), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 09:02 (fifteen years ago)

i've looked at a few other film polls (the '60s, '80s, and '90s ones) and so far it appears the number of ballots may have exceeded those polls! keep 'em coming in!

('_') (omar little), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

No reason this can't be 100, unless the work load is prohibitive.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

each time a ballot comes in i just add it to the spreadsheet and add it all up again, which takes just a couple of minutes. so far close to 550 different films have received votes.

('_') (omar little), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not volunteering to tabulate anything, but is this hard because people don't copy the titles exactly for their ballots? Cuz otherwise it seems like pretty simple stuff.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

xp, poisson noise

caek, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:35 (fifteen years ago)

there's a statistical error associated on each score that is about 10 x sqrt(number of people who voted for it) due to who actually turns out, etc. same things that happens in polling giving ±3 per cent on "is obama a muslim?" or whatever. you probably want actual score / [10 x sqrt(# of voters) to be above 5 for the results to be meaningful, but (i) it's an ILX poll (ii) why not.

PARTY TIME.

caek, Tuesday, 26 January 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

if a title's a little off, it's not too much of an issue. the biggest "issue" is i have "the" titles organized like this: (core, the) but a lot of folks send it in like this (the core). still not a big deal.

also seems very English-language oriented, which is a little surprising.

just counted, mine was 21 english-speaking, including one "foreign film" (dogville) and one dubbed one (spirited away). subtracting the one more-or-less-british movie (children of men) leaves 18 american movies, including one by a crazy german (grizzly man). the rest break down as 7 chinese (counting taiwan), 5 japanese, 2 thai and one each from denmark, romania, senegal, france, iran, argentina and korea.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 31 January 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

at least for US-distributed foreign films, this was not a great decade. The only reason they'll be about half of my 40 is that the domestic stuff was even worse.

If nrq is participating, someone should make theirs all-foreign-lang just for balance....

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 31 January 2010 14:45 (fifteen years ago)

calling films "foreign language" is anglocentric bs. for some people ALL of my picks are foreign language. so think on!

you've been writing the Academy Awards, eh

nrq, despite our many irreconcilable diffs I have enough respect for your intellect that I was shocked when you said your 10 best of the decade were all-Anglo. Please rethink (maybe you have and that's what the "surprises" are).

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 31 January 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

i just had a couple of ballots sent in that caused one film to go from just outside the top 100 all the way to #54, so remember that your votes can get films lift films you love up where they belong (joe cocker voice)

('_') (omar little), Sunday, 31 January 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

Are there still some 'weird' films in the top 10 or have they dropped out?

Bing Crosby, are you listening? (Billy Dods), Sunday, 31 January 2010 17:26 (fifteen years ago)

there are a couple in contention still....

now comes the time where i re-lobby for 'election' (johnnie to, 2005, hong kong) and memories of murder.

('_') (omar little), Sunday, 31 January 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

i've gone through this thread, the decatrius thread, and the blog linked to at the top in search of foreign films to pick.

it's not looking good. but there's more than one in the top 40.

the way i square the 'death of cinema' circle is pretty much that, tbh, i think european cinema was better in the 60s and 70s -- in the end that's the golden age, for me. i just don't see big figures like peak-era resnais, antonioni, herzog, losey, in the decades since.

but american genre movies and entertainment, in the 00s, i thought these were p strong.

i haven't watched every asian film that ppl have talked about, not going to front. but i've seen a lot of contenders and im not voting for them. i did see one i though was good, by the dp of 'platform' (which i couldn't abide itself), but i've forgotten it almost entirely. possibly post-apocalyptic.

sarahel, Sunday, 31 January 2010 18:16 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't watched every asian film that ppl have talked about, not going to front.

me either by a long shot. but asian cinema has been in a golden age of sorts for the past 20 years or so, even if what you're saying about europe is true. (which i'm not totally conceding, but i can see the case for it.)

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 31 January 2010 18:17 (fifteen years ago)

"asian cinema has been in a golden age of sorts for the past 20 years or so"

yeah, im not unaware of it, and i've put in the man-hours (well... i did till a few years ago), but... im just not feeling it. there's one asian auteur im semi-ashamed not to have caught up with ("joe"), but HHH, WKW, edward yang, jia, tsai ming-liang -- i'd love to say "i admire them but don't like them", and maybe that's what i should leave it as, and do some rescreening one day before deciding whether i mean it.

i mean, i gave a positive review to kiarostami's "shirin", anything is possible.

free the charmless but occasionally brilliant Dom Passantino (history mayne), Sunday, 31 January 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

HHH, WKW, edward yang, jia, tsai ming-liang

Not liking one, even two of these directors in the '00s is understandable. Not liking any of them is kind of a lifestyle choice.

I also, probably, don't agree a whole lot with ...

... but I guess there WAS the Spielberg renaissance and a few entertaining horror movies in the mix.

queen frostine (Eric H.), Sunday, 31 January 2010 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

OK, just counted out my ballot.

English - 22, though 2 or 3 of those are arguably not at all based in verbal language
from Asiatic countries - 9
does Russia count as Asia? - 1
from France - 4
from inferior Europe - 3
music/decay is the universal language - 1

queen frostine (Eric H.), Sunday, 31 January 2010 19:33 (fifteen years ago)

I might appreciate (bullshit word i know) a few of their films more, but fwiw Up The Yangtze actually resonated more than anything from the chinese/taiwanese, um, 'auteurs' this decade.

i re-lobby for 'election' (johnnie to, 2005, hong kong) and memories of murder.

oh don't worry Memories figures into my list somewhere, should have it out today or tomorrow!

Cosmo Vitelli, Sunday, 31 January 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

i think im being called a racist here?

n e way: i think WKW did some ok stuff in the 90s. not much more to it than very stylish, but it was very stylish.

HHH -- my favourite of his (that i've seen, natch) is 'a time to live and a time to die', which was from about 1986? 87? i'd like the chance to see more of his earlier stuff on the big screen. i have 'millenium mambo' on dvd!

yi-yi is fine, haven't seen since ~march 2001. maybe i'd get more from it now.

tsai ming-liang -- i have never been more bored than watching this dude. im sure it's great but i am shallow and kick-hungry.

jia -- liked 'unknown pleasures' enough, but god not 'platform'.

looking at this, im kind of thinking that european cinema fifty years ago was "coming to terms with modernity" (muriel, l'eclisse) in a manner not unlike these guys. so i do see why it's interesting in theory.

btw to those who have already voted and followed up to correct errors or oversights on their ballots, i got 'em and fixed 'em. and i got the movie blurbs from those who have sent them as well. if people don't submit blurbs, it's cool. i'm just going to do a search for blurbs from old comments anyway.

the mirror, which i've never seen and which it might be hard for me to find at any of my local video joints on the upper west side

I find it baffling that you couldn't find a copy of it somewhere on the upper west side (Tarkovsky's I'm assuming although I'm sure Panahi's is just as easy to find). Hence ONE of my many objections to Netflix (which have absolutely nothing to do with Luddism - a joke if you knew me).

i live in los angeles and i use netflix pretty heavily but i use it mainly for films that are more difficult to track down. there's an incredible store near me that i go to for new releases, most criterion dvds, documentaries, and tv series. and the nearest public library actually has most criterion dvds too.

tbh i haven't explored the video offerings here in depth (because, you know, i have netflix) but all i've seen while walking around is the occasional blockbuster. there really aren't very many video stores anymore. and of course add to that the difficulty i have going anywhere at all because of having two small kids, and, basically ... something showing up in my mailbox (or streaming onto my computer) is just pretty hard to beat.

A typically humane and perfectly reasonable response from M. Mothra. And because of that, I will now be your personal Netflix. Send me your snail mail address (via FB or whatever) and you will receive a repulsive amount of comically rare films to watch in the comfort of your own home for free.

i just re-joined netflix because i realized i hadn't seen and liked enough of the nominees in this poll to vote. the selection of dvds at the public library sux here (though it seems like the librarians are really trying), there aren't any places showing everything, and i can't just buy them.

Darin, Monday, 1 February 2010 05:36 (fifteen years ago)

Apologies if this has been covered already, but is it acceptable to submit an unranked list or, possibly, a staggered list w/ ten or so ranked & the rest given the same point spread? There a lot of films I'd like to vote for, but once I get beyond the top ten or so, any ranking of preferences will become mostly arbitrary.

they ate only candy canes (Pillbox), Monday, 1 February 2010 05:37 (fifteen years ago)

the way i had it figured, it was either 40 pts down to 1 pt for #40-1, or breaking it down evenly it would be 20.5 pts for each film voted for. i've had several voters do the latter option, if that's not a problem for you.

I've seen House of D, but I have no memory at all of Robin Williams being in it.

Oh of course!

To be fair, I just did this.

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Monday, 1 February 2010 23:53 (fifteen years ago)

kicker conspiracy (b. favre ha ha) (daria-g), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:39 (fifteen years ago)

list making is what makes the world go round!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

I like making lists - I don't like ranking things but I'm going to try to do this anyway.

t(o_o)t (ENBB), Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

I felt comfortable with how I ranked my 1-15 or so, and then the rest was really loose. If they make the final list, awesome. If not, I'm cool with that too.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 February 2010 00:44 (fifteen years ago)

my rankings were executed with scientific precision and calculated to the sixteenth decimal point. it took me a month just to build the software.

I'm already a little surprised at the order of picks on my ballot (having thrown it together very quickly while at work today, for fear of having procrastinated too long). Still, I think I stand behind it. My harried, unconscious mind came through, it would seem. Consciously, I don't know that I would've ever picked Ballistic: Ecks Vs. I wonder who had the most Pixars on their ballot -- I had 3

― PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! PLIES! (some dude)

You beat me - I had two.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

i think i started with 3 but lost 2 of them in the rundown to 40.

genial anarchy (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

Gone Baby Gone was daringly structured, but that didn't really work in my eyes, and as great as that first third was, it seemed to lose its touch at about Morgan Freeman's lost-child speech. Plus another movie about child abuse/neglect without much apparent interest in children. That said, way better than I expected, and the detectives and their thug friend were perfectly cast (I haven't read that Lehane, but others)...

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 15:03 (fifteen years ago)

The second half is a shambles. Given the strength of its cast and its more convincing evocation of Boston than Mystic River, BG was one of the most disappointing movies in recent memory.

i can't remember it well but yeah, really goes off the rails. i'd watch michelle monaghan... act... in... any old rubbish.

Wendy and Lucy should place, I imagine.

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 15:11 (fifteen years ago)

mystic river sucked hueg ballz had shitty fake boston accents and made the city out to be inhabited entirely by suicidal lepers - gone baby gone was pretty sweet if quite uneven and indulging in those same overly grittifing tendencies and myths of intact wholly white neighborhoods as mystic river - the departed is of course the most accurately frickin awesomely boston movie ever made

amy ryan was pretty awesome in this, pretty much the best thing in this film. i liked it a lot.

ANYWAY the polls are closed!

Thank you.

Thank you, omar.

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 15:51 (fifteen years ago)

Sincere thanks - this should be fun!

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 15:52 (fifteen years ago)

ok so since i received votes for almost 800 different films and i received about 100(!!) ballots, i may just take it up to a top 111, just for the hell of it.

('_') (omar little), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 15:54 (fifteen years ago)

we'll see

Let's hoping he either stays behind the camera or runs for office.

a lot more ballots than i was expecting. this should be interesting. thanks again omar.

i hope i win!

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, loads of ballots. Should be good. I'd stick to a top 100, though, and then do the thing of listing those that just missed out at the end.

emil.y, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 16:15 (fifteen years ago)

in the end i think i will stick to 100. i'll start later this morning, around 10 PST. watch for the thread....

('_') (omar little), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I was interpreting the 111 plan as "a lot of not so hot movies made the 100" or "Mulholland Drive somehow landed at #111."

queen frostine (Eric H.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 16:18 (fifteen years ago)

excited!

strongohulkingtonsghost, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

movies considered a lock that fall outside the top 100 are all the more reason to limit it to 100 and let people hold their breath

there will be blood at #1

genial anarchy (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 16:29 (fifteen years ago)

maybe i'm out of the loop, but i don't see Mullholland Drive getting the most #1 votes, even if it does end up in first place overall.

caek, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 16:31 (fifteen years ago)

a few years ago it'd have been zoolander or harold and kumar.

"a few" meaning "seven"

when do we do ballot sharing? I'd like to see some ppl's top 10

I suggest ballot sharing gets done on this thread so we don't crap up the top 100 thread

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

no way am i sharing my ballot. i can confirm that i managed to keep joe dirt out of my top 40, but it was a struggle

genial anarchy (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

At least these poll results will make me feel better about the other one Eric and I participated in. (Except for you guys being aware that Michel Gondry > Bruno Dumont.)

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

if there has to be a favourite for #1 it would be MH, but ILX is far too varied in its film love to call anything. the fact that there were around 100 ballots makes me think we're going to get a wide array of genre/quality.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:02 (fifteen years ago)

(or in most cases, blissfully unaware of Bruno Dumont)

xp

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, I'm hoping there's enough ILX weirdness out there that the top 10 doesn't end up being the predictable stuff (there will be milkshakes, no country for bowlcuts, mystic eastwood, etc)

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

people could just post their no 1's, that would allow the arguments while keeping the thread fairly clear at the same time.

genial anarchy (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

The only ballot sharing I'll do at this time is to confirm that I was apparently utterly predictable in placing two of the films being bandied about as potential winners at position one and position two on my ballot.

SNEEZED GOING DOWN STEPS, PAIN WHEN PUTTING SOCKS ON (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

(And given that fact, one could probably predict my number three choice.)

SNEEZED GOING DOWN STEPS, PAIN WHEN PUTTING SOCKS ON (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

all in my top ten, maybe top 5? still, we'll have the satisfaction of being winners to warm us

genial anarchy (darraghmac), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

etiquette w/ these big ilx polls has usually been to wait to post ballots after all the results have been posted, right?

the less music video directors on this list the better imo

brews before HOOS (s1ocki), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:21 (fifteen years ago)

Charlies Angels: Full Throttle for number 1. Has Marcos Siega directed any feature lengths? If so, can I rejig my ballot?

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:23 (fifteen years ago)

no ballot sharing is my preference, not until the full results are out there

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 17:38 (fifteen years ago)

wait do people actually like the shitty film "mystic river"

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

oh right

caek, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

I voted for mystic river but then again I could give two shits about boston veracities

鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

mystic river would have been better with Julianne Moore doing a boston accent.

Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 18:12 (fifteen years ago)

mystic river is an anti-revenge movie made by a guy who built his career playing famous vigilante cop, cheap dimestore ironies like this are my lifesblood
