Two dead after Las Vegas court building shooting
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8440483.stm

A gunman has opened fire in a federal court building in Las Vegas, killing one security officer and wounding another before being shot dead.

The incident took place early in the morning in a building more than a mile north of the Las Vegas Strip.

The gunman was shot in the head as he fled shortly after firing off several rounds within the court complex.

Chief Deputy Marshal Roxanna Lea Irwin said she believed he had acted alone. No motive was given for the attack.

Both the building and several streets nearby were evacuated and searched following the shooting.

The class-action federal lawsuit against ABB was filed by Hendron and several other employees in July, 2007. The suit charged that ABB’s pension review committee mis handled employee finances and incurred unreasonable losses.

Trial began on Monday in Kansas City federal court with Judge Nanette K. Laughrey presiding. Opening statements had taken place and witness testimony began. The case was to resume Thursday morning, a little more than two hours after the shots were fired and blood spilled at ABB in St. Louis.

KENNESAW, Ga. – A disgruntled ex-employee stormed a truck rental business in camouflage and opened fire with a handgun, killing two people and critically wounding three others at his former workplace, police said.

The lone gunman fled the scene in a pickup truck and was arrested after police stopped him about a mile from the Penske Truck Rental facility, said Cobb County Police Officer Joe Hernandez. The names of the suspect and victims were not immediately released.

"He wasn't here for very long and it wasn't long before he was taken into custody," Hernandez said.

Three killed in University of Alabama shooting

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) - Three faculty members at the University of Alabama in Huntsville were killed and three other staff members wounded in a shooting on Friday at a science building on the campus, authorities said.

Huntsville police and a university spokesman said the suspected shooter, a female faculty member, was in custody.

CNN's Alabama affiliate said the suspect had been informed before the shooting that she was being denied tenure at the university.

"There was a shooting at the University of Alabama at Huntsville between 4:05 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. There are three fatalities and three critical injuries and the suspect is in custody. The campus is in lockdown. We are working to save these lives," Trent Willis, chief of staff and communications for the city of Huntsville, told Reuters.

Huntsville police said all of the dead were faculty members and a witness said the shooting appeared to have taken place during a biology faculty meeting at the university's Shelby Center.

"I heard three shots and screaming," Melanie Gates, an engineering student at the campus, told Reuters.

She was near the exit of the Shelby Center when the shootings happened and she said the sound of the shots appeared to come from the third floor, where the biology faculty meeting was taking place.

There have been a number of deadly school shootings in the United States in recent years, including a rampage at Virginia Tech University in 2007 when a student killed 33 people, including himself.

Professor accused in Ala. slayings shot her brother in Mass. 24 years ago

The University of Alabama biology professor accused of slaying three of her colleagues fatally shot her brother in an apparent accident in Massachusetts more than two decades ago, a local police chief said.

Braintree Police Chief Paul Frazier confirmed the 1986 shooting in his town and slated a news conference this afternoon to discuss the incident.

The Globe reported at the time that Amy Bishop had shot her 18-year-old brother, Seth M. Bishop, an accomplished violinist who had won a number of science awards.

John Polio, chief of police at the time, said Amy Bishop, who was 20 at the time, had asked her mother, Judith, in the presence of her brother how to unload a round from the chamber of a 12-gauge shotgun.

Polio told the Globe that while Amy Bishop was handling the weapon, it fired, wounding Seth Bishop in the abdomen. He was pronounced dead at a hospital 46 minutes after the Dec. 6, 1986 shooting.

"Every indication at this point in time leads us to believe it was an accidental shooting," Polio said at the time.

In Friday's shooting, Amy Bishop, 42, a Harvard-educated neurobiologist, allegedly shot and killed three of her colleagues and wounded three others in an apparent tenure dispute at the Huntsville campus, the Associated Press reports.

The professor was eventually able to reverse the decision and to win tenure.

LITTLETON, Colo. (AP)- Teachers tackled and subdued a man armed with a high-powered rifle just after he shot two teenage students Tuesday at a suburban Denver middle school that's just miles from Columbine High School, the site of one of the nation's deadliest school shootings, authorities said.

The seventh-grade math teacher who tackled the suspect, David Benke, is a 6-foot-5-inch former college basketball player who has taught at the school for about 10 years, his wife Sandra Benke, told KUSA-TV. Other teachers quickly piled on the gunman, the station reported.

"Some staff acted very quickly, and very heroically," Jefferson County Sheriff's office spokeswoman Jacki Kelley said.

One male and one female were shot at about 3:30 p.m. outside Deer Creek Middle School in Littleton, Kelley said. Both students were taken to a nearby hospital and were expected to survive.

The school typically finishes its day at 3:05 p.m. The mother of one uninjured student, Sheri Hasse, said students were boarding buses when the shootings took place.

The school is about three miles southwest of Columbine High School, where two teens -- Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris -- killed 12 students and a teacher and wounded 23 others before killing themselves in 1999.

The middle school is on lockdown and is expected to be evacuated to a nearby school soon. Students' parents have been alerted through text messages, phone calls and e-mails, Jefferson County Schools spokeswoman Melissa Reeves said.

Several people with connections to the university’s biology department warned that Dr. Bishop, a neuroscientist with a Harvard Ph.D., might have booby-trapped the science building with some sort of “herpes bomb,” police officials said, designed to spread the dangerous virus.

Only people who had worked with Dr. Bishop would know that she had done work with the herpes virus as a post-doctoral student and had talked about how it could cause encephalitis. She had also written an unpublished novel in which a herpes-like virus spreads throughout the world, causing pregnant women to miscarry.

My hope is to use the creativity of markets and advanced technology to transcend the destructive regimes that have fastened themselves upon the world. I have dreamed for an number of years of creating v:production econosystems, which I hope to apply to the creation of v:security service econosystems using new and economic mechanisms and information technology.

I have a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and studied biochemistry at San Jose State University. I've studied electrical engineering with the goal of creating microsystems for molecular analysis.[1][2][3][4] You can see a proposal to use aluminum anodization as an adsorption method for DNA molecules on CMOS chips at v:DNA_integrated_circuit/proposal_import_2007 (which originates from an unsuccessful DARPA proposal to create a "microMIRV" interoperable with standard firearms ammunition), and a proposal to use xenon difluoride to create a picoliter-scale computer-controlled device for sorting biomolecules (available at v:Capillary_electrode_array/proposal_import_2007), including DNA and protein molecules. My goals include the discovery of a protein sequence for the diamondase enzyme, enabling the creation of macroscale diamond structures, and the creation of self-assembled macrosystems with CMOS DNA-integrated circuits. The scale of these and other projects have led me to develop financial instruments representing information as a tool to manage large projects that are very knowledge-intensive.

I am determined to see that justice is served in the death of Colonel James Sabow, as a step toward establishing the truth of events such as the September 11 demolitions and institutions such as the coup regime of 1963 that maintains itself in power through the global drug trade, financial corruption, and murder, among other crimes. My work to develop information currency is an effort to create a framework for information management that uses financial markets to create the economic signals (prices) that will effect complex human actions in the real world based on specified information. My desire for justice led me to violate what I think is one of the most unjust laws, cannabis prohibition, by growing 16 cannabis plants on my balcony in Irvine, CA from March 2006 to June 2006. I've posted the Orange County, CA District Attorney's complaint for this offense at http://cannabis.wikia.com/wiki/JPatrickBedell_2006-06-06_cannabis_felony_complaint .

One desired result of my effort is (will be) billions and billions of carefully cultivated, highly valuable cannabis plants growing throughout the United States with complete security of property. I have posted the image to the right in order to illustrate the use of cannabis as a monetary system using digital financial instruments. There are two information currency units in each of the PDF417 codes pictured. One of the information currency units is drawn from a series with "one gram cannabis" with the underlying asset, and the second ICU in each code has as its underlying asset the URL http://www.mises.org/humanaction/pdf/humanaction.pdf and the SHA-1 digest value of the file at that location (fd8205cb8b4793d43b57ba6f6c7367aa700c307a). This is a way of associating the work of Ludwig von Mises with financial value, which may be a tool to implement his ideas in reality. I hope someday to see full-reserve banking and observance of Article One, Section 10 of the US Constitution.

I apologize for the graphic content of some of my contributions, but detailed evidence is sometimes necessary to address important matters. I am very disturbed by the fact that Col. Sabow's civilian superiors and their successors have been able to continue their narco-mercantilism. For historical comparison, I might resemble the odd German still complaining about the murders of the Night of the Long Knives in 1938(?). Of course, Wikipedia didn't exist in 1938!

I am looking for collaborators for ongoing commercial and intellectual efforts. Email to jpbedell at mises.com is welcome!

Police are hunting Derrick Bird, 52, following an incident in Duke Street, Whitehaven, and other places across West Cumbria.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that a number of people have been injured after shots were fired in the Whitehaven, Seascale and Egremont areas this morning.

"There are a number of fatalities and police are working to identify the individuals and inform relatives. Ambulance crews are in attendance across the area."

Bird, of Rowrah near Frizington, is believed to be driving a dark grey/silver Citreon Picasso, registration ND55 ZFC.

Anyone who sees him or his vehicle should call 999 and should not approach him.

Glenda Pears, who runs L&G Taxis, said both Mr Bird and the Duke Street victim were self-employed drivers - and friends.

She said Mr Bird had been a taxi driver for 23 years and was divorced with two sons, and described him as a “real nice man”.

She said: “We just don’t know what’s happened. The lad that’s been killed was friends with him. They used to stand together having a craic on the rank. He was friends with everybody and used to stand and joke on Duke Street.”

“He’s such a nice lad. One of my drivers was talking to him last night. He was just working as normal and was going to go to Tesco’s to get chicken.”

12 shot dead in lake district

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 16:45 (fourteen years ago) link

At least 12 people were fatally wounded today after a taxi driver went on the rampage with a shotgun in the Lake District before killing himself.

Derrick Bird (52), a divorced father-of-two, murdered two colleagues in the centre of the coastal town of Whitehaven this morning before driving across Cumbria shooting other victims, apparently at random.

Several hours later, following a major manhunt amid calls for residents to stay indoors, police found his body 30km away in woods near the hamlet of Boot.

The exact number of casualties was not known but Prime Minister David Cameron told parliament earlier that at least five people had been killed. Police said at least 25 people had been injured and denied reports that the gunman's mother was among the victims.

Nice bit of speculation along the 'Broken Britain' lines from the Telegraph:

One of the central lines of inquiry surrounded the theory that a row had developed over the will of Bird’s mother, Mary, who is seriously ill.

The solicitor — Kevin Commons — may have been advising the family.

It was also reported that Bird had initially armed himself with two guns on Tuesday night, but was disarmed by a friend.

Bird is then believed to have sought medical help at a local hospital for his fragile mental state, only to be turned away.

Ala. prof charged in brother's 1986 shooting death

CANTON, Mass. — A biology professor charged with killing three of her colleagues at an Alabama university has been indicted in the 1986 shooting death of her brother in Massachusetts, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Authorities had originally ruled that the shooting of Amy Bishop's brother was an accident, but they reopened the case after Bishop was charged in February with gunning down six of her colleagues at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, killing three.

Bishop, 45, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 18-year-old brother, Seth, Norfolk District Attorney William Keating said.

Keating said he did not understand why charges were never brought against Bishop.

"I can't give you any explanations, I can't give you excuses, because there are none," he said. "Jobs weren't done, responsibilities weren't met and justice wasn't served."

Gun (file photo) Police said the gunman was a former employee of Emcore

A 37-year-old gunman has killed three people before shooting himself at an office building in Albuquerque, in the US state of New Mexico, police say.

Another four people were injured at the offices of technology manufacturer Emcore, in what local police said was a domestic violence-related incident.

Police at first said the man had killed five others but later revised the toll.

Officials said the gunman, who opened fire just before 0930 local time (1530 GMT), was a former Emcore employee.

His ex-wife is also believed to work for the company.

It is unclear whether she was killed or injured in the incident.

People living and working in the area were warned by police to stay indoors for several hours.

Company: At least 3 shot at Conn. beer distributor

(AP) – 35 minutes ago

MANCHESTER, Conn. — A company executive says a warehouse worker who had been called in to resign opened fire at a beer distributor in Connecticut and at least three people were shot.

It was not immediately clear whether anyone was killed in the shooting Tuesday morning in Manchester, about 10 miles east of Hartford.

The executive, Brett Hollander of Hartford Distributors, says the company is "just trying to figure out who's shot, who's not accounted for." He says 50 to 70 people were inside and that a fire at the warehouse was out.

South Windsor police Sgt. Scott Custer would only say that several people are "down" and did not say how many were hurt or how badly.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Authorities say several people have been shot at a beer distribution company in Connecticut.

South Windsor police Sgt. Scott Custer says several people were injured Tuesday morning at Hartford Distributors Inc. in Manchester, about 10 miles east of Hartford. He would only say that several people are "down" and did not say how many people were hurt or how badly.

Custer says his agency, police in other surrounding towns and state authorities have been called to the scene.

Don't know how much disgruntlement was involved but

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A masked man armed with an assault-style rifle fired dozens of shots at a birthday party at a home in western Indianapolis early Tuesday, killing two people and wounding six before fleeing, police said.

Around 30 people were attending the barbecue when the shooting happened shortly after midnight, Indianapolis police Lt. Jeff Duhamell said. A motive was not immediately known.

A man and a woman died at the scene and six people were taken to the hospital in stable condition, including one partygoer who had been shot in the neck and another who was shot in the back, Duhamell said.

"We're talking at least 25-30 rounds from a high-powered rifle, so although eight people were shot, it could've been a lot worse," he said.

He did not have details of the firearm used in the attack except that it was an assault-style rifle, "an AK or SKS."

Duhamell said the gunman had been wearing a ski mask, and that he fired from the street and then a car before fleeing. It wasn't clear if a getaway driver was also involved.

Nine people have died in a shooting at a beer distribution warehouse in Manchester, Connecticut.

A warehouse driver, identified as 34-year-old Omar Thornton, who was asked to resign his job with Hartford Distributors, refused and then opened fire.

The gunman apparently turned the gun on himself after killing eight others.

Joanne Hannah's daughter, Kristi, dated Thornton for eight years. She tells NECN that every man has their breaking point -- after he had dealt with racial harassment at work.

"We are shocked," said Hannah.

Governor Rell issued the following statement on the workplace shooting this morning at Hartford Distributors in Manchester:

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the employees and families of the victims. In the wake of this tragedy, we are all left asking the same questions: How could someone do this? Why did they do this?

"It was a senseless act of violence that has left us all shaken and reminds us just how precious and fragile life truly is."

buzza, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 18:30 (fourteen years ago) link

A woman who knows the driver who fatally shot at least eight co-workers and himself at a Connecticut beer distribution company says he had complained of racial harassment at work.

Joanne Hannah says her daughter dated Omar Thornton for the past eight years. She says her daughter had no indication he planned anything violent Tuesday morning after he was asked to resign from Hartford Distributors and refused.

Hannah says Thornton, a black man, had complained to his superiors about a picture of a noose and a racial epithet in a bathroom at the distributor. Her daughter told her the supervisors did not respond to his complaints.

This is fucking sad. :(

Hannah says Thornton called his own mother after the rampage "to say goodbye and that he loved everybody."

A US man has killed himself after shooting dead five people, including his wife and stepdaughter, in an argument about his breakfast.

Stanley Neace, 47, went on the killing spree in a trailer park in Jackson, rural Breathitt County, Kentucky.

He chased his wife into a neighbouring trailer where he shot her, her daughter and three witnesses, reports say.

State troopers found Mr Neace dead at the porch of his trailer, slumped over his own gun.

Mr Neace flew into a rage when his wife Sandra, 54, brought him some eggs for breakfast, a relative of the neighbours he killed said.

Mrs Neace's daughter Sandra Strong, 28, was also killed.
Commotion

The other victims were named as neighbours Dennis Turner, 31, Teresa Fugate, 30, and Tammy Kilborn, 40.

Ms Fugate was shot in front of her seven-year-old daughter, who Mr Neace spared.

"Her daughter said, 'Please, please don't shoot me,' and he said, 'All right, you can leave,' and she ran out," Ms Fugate's sister Sherri Anne Robinson told the Associated Press.

Mrs Kiborn was another neighbour who stepped out onto her porch during the commotion, reports said.

Mr Neace apparently waited an hour for the police to arrive before turning the gun on himself, police heard the shot as they drove up to the trailer.

Other neighbours had fled in terror during the rampage.

Breathitt county is Kentucky's rural eastern region, where gun ownership numbers are high.

"Over eggs? I thought that was crazy. I mean just because his eggs weren't hot?" Ms Robinson said.

Apparently, the woman emerged armed from a residential building where moments before an explosion killed two, then opened fire on people in the nearby hospital. Really bizarre.

'Gun deaths' at German hospital

At least two people have been killed and one seriously injured in a shooting at a hospital in Germany, reports say.

The incident took place in the south-western town of Loerrach, close to the French and Swiss borders.

A woman reportedly walked into the Saint Elizabeth hospital and started firing with an automatic weapon. She was said to be one of the dead.

Police said they had sealed off the area and the situation was now under control.

The incident took place at about 1800 local time (1600 GMT). Police arrived within 15 minutes of the shooting but it was unclear how long the woman had been in the hospital grounds.

The BBC's Tristana Moore in Berlin says police are also investigating reports of an explosion at a building opposite the hospital, where two bodies were said to have been found.

Officers are investigating whether there is a connection between the two incidents.

The identity of the woman is not yet known and no immediate motive has so far been given for the shooting.

I reckon the 7 dead she'd heard is the kind of nutty chinese whispers that go around when something happens (bloke was stabbed at the end of my street a few weeks ago outside a nursery school, it was all over twitter that someone was in the school stabbing the kids/holding them hostage, etc etc)

a little over a week ago, a elderly woman in seattle shot her daughter, her daughter's husband, and two of her own grandchildren (two of the four children of the couple she shot) before fatally turning the gun on herself. though she had a history of fairly minor mental problems, no explanation was or probably ever will be given. her daughter survived the attack, but the other three victims died at the scene. so strange to think of a grandmother, perhaps your grandmother, as the spree shooter. it doesn't fit the profile...

'My mom has gone crazy': 4 die in W. Seattle shooting

A woman fatally shot three family members before killing herself Thursday afternoon at a house in a West Seattle neighborhood.

By Seattle Times staff

The grandmother told one relative to lock herself in her room. She then went downstairs Thursday afternoon and killed her son-in-law, as her panicked grandchildren began fleeing their West Seattle home, screaming and crying.

Next she went into her daughter's bedroom, where two of her granddaughters were hiding, and shot them, too. As her daughter fled, Chhouy Harm took aim and fired into her back.

"Grandma just shot them for no reason," said 17-year-old Tony Sun, a member of the family who arrived home shortly after the shootings to see police lining his street.

Next thing he knew, he and his surviving family members were gathered in a police bus. His relatives told him about the carnage they had witnessed.

In the end, four people were dead, including Harm, who shot herself as police massed outside the home. Her daughter survived her bullet wounds, frantically telling officers outside the home, "My mom has gone crazy," police said.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A gunman was holed up Friday at a Walmart store where he worked after shooting three co-workers who were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Heavily armed police officers entered the building about four hours after the lone gunman entered about 8:30 a.m. and opened fire on fellow employees, Reno Deputy Police Chief Mike Whan said.

Police: Fla. gunman killed self at school meeting

(AP) – 3 hours ago

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) — A gunman opened fire at a school board meeting Tuesday, sending spectators scrambling before he exchanged shots with a security guard and then killed himself, police said. No one besides the gunman was injured.

Witnesses said the gunman walked up to a podium, spray painted a red "V'' with a circle around it before he began firing.

Bay District School board member Ginger Littleton said she hit the gunman in the arm with her purse when some of the people in the room were ordered out.

"In my mind, that was the last attempt or opportunity to divert him," she told The Associated Press.

The gunman got angry, turned around, and she fell to the floor. The man pointed the gun at her head and said, "You stupid b----" but he didn't shoot her, she said. She's not sure why.

"He had every opportunity take me out," she said.

Initially, officials thought that district security chief Mike Jones may have killed the gunman. But police Sgt. Jeff Becker said that after authorities reviewed videotape of the shooting, investigators determined that the gunman, identified as Clay A. Duke, fatally shot himself after being hit by shots fired by Jones.

State records show Duke, 56, served four years in prison about a decade ago for aggravated stalking and other crimes.

Reporter Daniel Carson of the Panama City News Herald told his paper that he had noticed the man during the meeting and he didn't appear agitated.

Leon Walters, who was also in attendance, said the gunman was a heavy, disheveled man who walked along the side of the room to the podium.

Walters said the man pulled out a can of spray paint and drew a red circle on the wall with a mark through it. Carson and other witnesses described it as the letter "V." The man then pulled out what looked like a pistol.

"What are you doing?" someone asked, Walters recalled. "What's going on?"

The gunman told everyone to leave "except these clowns behind the counter here," referring to the school board members, Walters said. There are five board members, Littleton and four men.

Carson said the gunman told everyone to leave except the male board members.

Walters left the room but stayed behind one of the doors. He called 911 and was peeking inside.

The gunman was in a heated discussion with the school board members, Walters said.

"I overhead some discussion about his wife needing a job," Walters said. "Or his wife had lost her job or wanting a job or something like that."

Walters heard one member say, "I'll get your wife a job or I'll see if I can't find her a job somewhere."

That's when Jones, who had been elsewhere in the building, entered and exchanged shots with Duke, wounding him. Duke then shot himself, police said.

"The guy obviously had a death wish," district spokeswoman Karen Tucker said.

Carson told his paper that Jones was comforted by his colleagues and led away.

"He is a hero," said Tommye Lou Richardson, the school district's personnel director, who was at the meeting.

State prison records show Duke was charged in October 1999 with aggravated stalking, shooting or throwing a missile into a building or vehicle and obstructing justice. He was convicted and sentenced in January 2000 to five years in prison but was released in January 2004.

All visitors evacuated from Rainier; gunman sought
By MIKE BAKER, Associated Press – 8 minutes ago

MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. (AP) — Authorities evacuated about 125 people overnight from the visitors center at Mount Rainier National Park, where police have been searching the snowy terrain for an armed gunman suspected of killing a park ranger.

About 150 officers converged on the mountain park after ranger Margaret Anderson was shot to death Sunday morning, and searchers used an aircraft with heat-sensing capabilities to hunt from the skies.
Authorities believe the gunman was still in the woods, with weapons.

Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said that Benjamin Colton Barnes, a 24-year-old believed to have survivalist skills, was a "strong person of interest" in the slaying.

"We do have a very hot and dangerous situation," Troyer said.

Teams were assessing new tactical plans that they planned to put into place at daylight, he said.
Safety concerns prompted authorities to keep the tourists quarantined at a visitors center as the manhunt unfolded. Early Monday morning, officers escorted them out of the park in groups of vehicles over several hours.

Crews had initially planned to keep everyone in a basement with guards. But it was determined to be "better to do it (evacuate) under the cover of darkness than daylight," Troyer said.

Evacuee Dinh Jackson, a mother from Olympia who came to the mountain to sled with family and friends, said officials ordered people to hurry into the lodge after the shooting.

Jackson said officials had everyone get on their knees and place hands behind their heads as they went through the building, looking at faces to make sure the gunman was not among them.
"That was scary for the kids," she said.

Michael Wall, an elementary school teacher from Puyallup, spent the morning hiking with his son. They didn't find out about the violence until returning.

Wall said he was impressed by how staff members and visitors kept each other comfortable with food and conversation.

"It was calm, cool, easygoing," Wall said. "I didn't notice any tenseness or terseness."

A parks spokesman said Barnes was an Iraq war veteran, and the mother of his child had alleged he suffered from post-traumatic stress following his deployments.

Barnes was involved in a custody dispute in Tacoma in July, during which the toddler's mother sought a temporary restraining order against him, according to court documents.

In an affidavit, the woman wrote that Barnes was suicidal and possibly suffered from PTSD after deploying to Iraq from 2007 to 2008. She said he gets easily irritated, angry and depressed and keeps an arsenal of weapons in his home.

Barnes was also a suspect in the early Sunday morning shooting of four people at a house party south of Seattle, police said.

Sgt. Cindi West, King County Sheriff's spokeswoman, said late Sunday that Barnes was connected to an early-morning shooting at a New Year's house party in Skyway, south of Seattle that left four people injured, two critically.

That shooting happened about 3 a.m. and stemmed from an argument over a gun.

West said three people fled the scene. Two were located, and West said authorities were trying to find Barnes and had been in contact with his family, trying to have them convince him to "come to the police and tell his side of the story" in the Skyway shooting.

At Mount Rainier around 10:20 a.m. Sunday, the gunman had sped past a checkpoint to make sure vehicles have tire chains, which are sometimes necessary in snowy conditions, Bacher said.

One ranger began following him while Anderson, a 34-year-old mother of two young children who was married to another Mount Rainier park ranger, eventually blocked the road to stop the driver.

Before fleeing, the gunman fired shots at both Anderson and the ranger that trailed him, but only Anderson was hit, Bacher said. Anderson would have been armed, as she was one of the rangers tasked with law enforcement, Bacher said. Troyer said she was shot before she had even exited the vehicle.

About 150 officers, including officials from the Washington State Patrol, U.S. Forest Service and FBI, were on the mountain Sunday.

Tactical responders wearing crampons and snowshoes pursued what appeared to be the gunman's tracks in the snow, Troyer said. Those tracks went into creeks and other waterways, making it more difficult for crews to follow.

"He's intentionally trying to get out of the snow," Troyer said.

Authorities recovered his vehicle, which had weapons and body armor inside, Troyer said.

A SWAT team was able to remove Anderson's body from the mountain late Sunday night, with a procession of law enforcement vehicles escorting her remains away.

The park would remain closed Monday, officials announced late Sunday.

Park superintendent Randy King said Anderson had served as a park ranger for about four years. King said Anderson's husband also was working as a ranger elsewhere in the park at the time of the shooting.
"It's just a huge tragedy — for the family, the park and the park service," he said.

A body was spotted by aircraft in a remote area and there's a strong probability it is Benjamin Colton Barnes, the man thought to have killed a Mount Rainier National Park ranger on Sunday, a sheriff's spokesman says.

"One of the air units and some of the FBI SWAT team members and sheriff’s SWAT team members have found a body," said Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer. "We have not gotten to it, we are nowhere near it, it’s still buried in the snow."

One of the Balloon Juice bloggers went absolutely ballistic over that today.

Don’t dare call them racists, don’t dare say we need law enforcement to look into the militia and white supremacist movements, don’t dare point out the people going on shooting rampages are not young urban minorities, don’t dare point out how easy it is to get firearms and ammunition in this country, don’t dare point out the people who actually are mounting up for a shooting war in our midst, because you should really be worried about the fellow down the street with the different religion or no religion at all or the unarmed black kid with the hoodie or the dirty effing hippie Occupy protester on the street corner or the Latino family driving along the border state highway or the people who want marriage equality for their loved ones, or the woman who wants to get rid of the fetus she’s going to be unable to care for in six months.

These people, I am told, are the terrorists among us who will kill people, and not REAL ‘MURICANS like JT Ready. And man, this one stomps on all the asshole buttons, he gets all this hardware to play Metal Gear Solid on the border to shoot him some brown people because he has to protect the white way of life, and in the end the person who was the greatest threat to his loved ones was JT Ready him-goddamn-self, who took the chickenshit way out and punched his own clock after murdering a toddler. Now that’s freedom, my droogies.

America, you need a good swift kick in the ass. Here’s hoping this wakes up the somnambulant among us.

[UPDATE] And let’s be clear here, this asshole apparently had a plan that consisted of A) kill his family, B) then kill himself in order to C) make it look like The Great Brown Horde offed him so D) he’d be some sort of white supremacist martyr and his angry nutjob buddies would E) then start a race war in Arizona. He’s not just a terrorist, he’s a complete “New branches of mathematics are necessary in order to sufficiently quantify how evil this asshole is” type of terrorist.

(Reuters) - A gunman took hostages in an Indiana real estate office on Friday, then released them after an eight-hour standoff and fatally shot himself in the head, authorities said.

The gunman died at a hospital in Valparaiso, Indiana, about 40 miles southeast of Chicago, police said.

"We believe there was some issue over some money," said Valparaiso Police Chief Michael Brickner. He added the man had been to the office previously to complain and had a confrontation with employees.

FB post from a friend of mine who who was at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church during the shooting there four years ago. This is a guy who watched his friends being shot and killed:

Another shooting. Another CHURCH shooting! I am so damned tired of flashing back to my experience of the shooting at TVUUC!! I am so sick of reliving it in my daily thoughts and seeing it re-enacted every few weeks somewhere else in America. I am sick of hateful people having such easy access to guns. I am sick of our bought-out politicians kowtowing to the NRA and allowing hatemongers and psychos to arm themselves to the teeth (LEGALLY!!!) and then simply walking into innocent crowds (churches!!! musems!! movie theaters!!!) and gunning down innocent people. I am sick of talking heads justifying this easy murder as just a part of our constitutional rights, as though somehow the founding fathers thought buying an AR-36 assault rifle with a 100-bullet clip (capable of firing 100 rounds in 3 minutes) is an inherent human right, more important than human freedom itself (after all, these founding fathers are the same guys who considered African-Americans to be 3/4ths of a person and deserving of slavery, and women unworthy of voting). More than anything, I am sick of a right-wing culture that demonizes anyone who disagrees with their beliefs (see Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, Michael Savage, Michael Reagan and of course their manifesto-writing murderous protegee, Jim David Adkisson, the TVUUC gunman). And don't get me started on IGNORANCE! Is it any surprise that the guy who walked into the Sikh Temple today was a white male with a "9-11 tatoo" on his arm? Too bad he didn't live long enough for someone to tell him that Sikhs have NO CONNECTION WHATSOEVER to Islam, let alone the fringe element of Islam that was responsible for 9-11. I was a religious educator in my previous life. That is what I was doing the day Jim David Adkisson walked into my church and opened fire on a childrens' play during a Sunday worship service. And I guarantee you, the children in my programs at TVUUC know far more about Sikh's than this asshole did. Why? Because WE CARE ABOUT OTHER FAITHS, that's why@!!
Goddam this!! I am so sick of this!

When he came to the list of victims names, Edwards hesitated: he said that he was afraid of pronouncing them incorrectly: “I don’t know if I would be able to—unless someone could come up and assist me from the Sikh community.” Someone did. It was a small detail, but one that showed humility and respect—no one’s name ought to be mangled in those circumstances. Here are the names:

Prakash Singh, who was thirty-nine; Sita Singh, forty-one; Ranjit Singh, forty-nine; Satwant Singh Kaleka, sixty-five; Suveg Singh, eighty-four; and Paramjit Kaur, who was forty-one, and the only woman killed.

Kaleka was the president of the temple. His son Amar Deep Kaleka told a Wisconsin television station that F.B.I. agents had told him that, judging from the trails of blood in the temple and where the bodies were, his father had most likely engaged in a physical confrontation with Page in the lobby—“a blood struggle”—and had likely slowed him down, giving others time to hide. (Eight women were keeping quiet in a pantry.) “The F.B.I. told me, they came up and shook my hand a number of times and put their arms around me and said, ‘You know, your father was a hero.’”

"He then drove straight across four lanes of the road and smashed into a man and woman with their baby in a pushchair. He just smashed into them before screaming round on the road and heading away.

"In about 100 yards he veered off the road and hit another two boys and a mother and a boy on a bike. People were rushing out of houses trying to help the injured people and covering them with blankets until the ambulances arrived. The baby was covered in blood – people were just lying on the pavements moaning."

http://www.wptv.com/dpp/news/national/1-killed-3-wounded-in-workplace-shooting-at-apple-valley-farms-in-fresno-california

FRESNO, CA - (CNN) -- An employee of Apple Valley Farms in Fresno, California, opened fire on his co-workers Tuesday, killing one and wounding three others before shooting himself, police said.

Two victims are in critical condition; one is in serious condition and expected to survive, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

The alleged gunman, 42-year-old Lawrence Jones, is in critical condition, police said.

Jones has an extensive criminal history, authorities said.

He was found outside the plant with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. The victim in serious condition was a 32-year-old woman who was also found outside. She had a gunshot wound in the lower back.

The two victims in critical condition were found inside the business. One, a 34-year-old man, appeared to have a gunshot wound to the head; the other, a 28-year-old man, had been shot in the neck, police said.

A 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jones had worked at Apple Valley Farms for 14 months, police said. According to a co-worker, when Jones came to work this morning "he did not appear to be himself," Dyer said. About 3 1/2 hours later, he pulled out a handgun and opened fire, shooting four people, police said.

Authorities don't know what may have provoked the attack.

As many as 30 workers were inside the business at the time, police said.

One dead after Alabama school bus shooting, child seized

(Reuters) - Officials in Alabama said one person was killed on Tuesday after local media reported that a gunman boarded a school bus and shot the driver several times, then fled with a 6-year-old child passenger and holed up in an underground bunker.

The Dale County Sheriff's Department said in a statement there had been one fatality as a result of the incident in Midland City and that the area had been evacuated after law enforcement arrived at the scene.

The department said it was releasing only limited details, so it was not immediately clear whether the person who was killed was the bus driver.

It confirmed that a child was at the scene. Earlier, the department had said a command post had been set up near the site where the suspected shooter was barricaded.

The Dothan Eagle newspaper said the gunman was in a bunker near his home hours after the shooting.

The shooting comes as the nation is on edge about gun violence, especially in schools, after a gunman shot dead 20 students and six staff members at a Connecticut elementary school last month, stoking a national debate on gun control.

The sheriff's department said multiple agencies were assisting with the incident and local area schools would be closed on Wednesday.

Alabama media reported that the incident happened at approximately 4 p.m. local time when the suspect demanded the driver let a student off the bus. When the driver refused, the suspect boarded the bus, then shot the driver before taking the child and fleeing the scene.

Law enforcement officials are negotiating with the suspect, according to media reports.

Mass Shooting in Phoenix Office Building Hours After Gabrielle Giffords Testifies at Congressional Hearing on Gun Control

Multiple people have reportedly been shot inside an office complex in Phoenix just hours after former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to deliver a statement on the need for more gun control.

According to local police, as many as four people were shot inside an office belonging to a mortgage company, and the suspect — described as a while male in his 60s — has fled the scene.

Details concerning the victims' condition has not been released.

The scene remains active, and police have shut down several streets near the area where the shooting took place.

And the neighbor's kids were on the bus when Dykes boarded it (apparently the hostage isn't one of this neighbor's kids though). Also, he'd stopped another neighbor, one with his kid in the back seat, then shot at the vehicle when the neighbor drove away. Because of this incident, Dykes (who wasn't in custody)was supposed to appear in court, either yesterday or today, I didn't get that last. The hostage is supposed to take some kind of medication every day.

A former Navy SEAL and the author of “American Sniper,” Chris Kyle, was shot and killed along with another man Saturday at a Texas gun range, a county sheriff has told the Texas news media.

So many layers of tragic irony.

The sheriff of Erath County, Tommy Bryant, said Mr. Kyle, 38, and a second man were found dead at Rough Creek Lodge’s shooting range west of Glen Rose, according to The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Stephenville Empire-Tribune. Glen Rose is about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Kyle wrote the best-selling book, “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History,” detailing his 150-plus kills of insurgents from 1999 to 2009.

Mr. Bryant did not immediately return phone calls to The Associated Press seeking comment. A woman who answered the phone at the lodge where the shooting occurred declined to comment and referred calls to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators did not immediately release the name of the second victim, according to the newspapers.

Witnesses told sheriff’s investigators that a gunman opened fire on the men around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, then fled in a pickup truck belonging to one of the victims, according to The Star-Telegram. The newspapers said a 25-year-old man was later taken into custody in Lancaster, southeast of Dallas, and that charges were expected.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 3 February 2013 13:57 (eleven years ago) link

What stands out for me in this story: (from an article in the papers here)

On Sunday, the police identified the shooter as Eddie Ray Routh, a 25-year-old veteran with a history of mental illness who had served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. The police offered no information about a possible motive.

How was a guy with a history of mental illness able to serve? Let alone now be allowd to handle guns.

Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Monday, 4 February 2013 01:13 (eleven years ago) link

his mental illness might have been triggered or exacerbated by his service

veryupsetmom (harbl), Monday, 4 February 2013 01:21 (eleven years ago) link

That occurred to me yeah. Its not clear from the way thats written if they mean he was ill anyway, or because of service. The latter'd certainly put things in an obvioys perspective. The honorable President George H.W. Bush, they never give you enough credit for your successful Presidency. You were always one of my favorite Presidents (2nd favorite). I hope your health improves greatly. You are the epitome of an American and service to country.
General Petraeus, you made a mistake that the majority of men make once, twice, or unfortunately many times in a lifetime. You are human. You thought with your penis. It’s okay.I personally believe you should have never resigned and told your critics to shove it. You only answer to two people regarding the affair, your wife and children, period. I hope you return to government service to your country as it is visibly in your DNA.
General Colin Powell, your book “My American Journey” solidified my decision to join the military after college. I had always intended to serve, but your book and journey motivated me. You are an inspiration to all Americans and influenced me greatly.
To all SEA’s (senior enlisted advisers), you are just as important if not a greater viability to large and small commands. It’s time you take a more active role in leading your enlisted and advising officers. These are not your twilight years or time to relax. You can either strengthen the tip of the spear, or make it brittle. You decide.
Pat Harvey, I’ve always thought you carried yourself professionally and personally the way a strong black woman should. Your articulation and speech is second to none. You are the epitome of a journalist/anchor. You are America.
Ellen Degeneres, continue your excellent contribution to entertaining America and bringing the human factor to entertainment. You changed the perception of your gay community and how we as Americans view the LGBT community. I congratulate you on your success and opening my eyes as a young adult, and my generation to the fact that you are know different from us other than who you choose to love. Oh, and you Prop 8 supporters, why the fuck do you care who your neighbor marries. Hypocritical pieces of shit.
Westboro Baptist Church, may you all burn slowly in a fire, not from smoke inhalation, but from the flames and only the flames.
Tebow, I really wanted to see you take charge of an offense again and the game. You are not a good QB by todays standards, but you are a great football player who knows how to lead a team and WIN. You will be “Tebowing” when you reach your next team. I have faith in you. Get out of that circus they call the Jets and away from the reality TV star, Rex Ryan, and Mark Rapist Sanchez.
Christopher Walz, you impressed me in Inglorious Basterds. After viewing Django Unchained, I was sold. I have come to the conclusion that you are well on your way to becoming one of the greats if not already and show glimpses of Daniel Day Lewis and Morgan Freeman-esque type qualities of greatness. Trust me when I say that you will be one of the greatest ever.

http://www.ibtimes.com/conspiracy-theorist-calls-christopher-dorner-manhunt-hoax-video-la-shooting-saga-continues-1070928

"This is a hoax, this officer Christopher Jordan Dorner, it's a hoax drill and it's set up for the very simple reason to get the police agitated with the citizens, the citizens to accept more police involvement in their lives on the streets and give you a reason why they're going to want to stop you and set up roadblocks and do all kinds of other things," the video's narrator states. "And you will accept it, why? because they're telling you that this guy's out there shooting a bunch people."

But the unsubstantiated theories don't end there, as dave j goes on to theorize that one reason why the populace is willing to accept Dorner as a suspected killer is because he "looks a little bit like this guy, who they've been putting in our face all for the last three, four, five days." The "guy" he's referencing is none other than Baltimore Ravens star and Super Bowl XLVII champion Ray Lewis, who looks very little like Dorner, but similar enough that it allows dave j to go further down the strange road his theory traces, by stating that this familiarity with Lewis allows us to accept Dorner's face as that of an alleged cop-killer on the lam.

On Thursday, law enforcement officials were inspecting a package CNN's Anderson Cooper received from Dorner. CNN spokeswoman Shimrit Sheetrit said that a parcel containing a note, a DVD and a bullet hole-riddled memento was addressed to Cooper's office.

The memento was a coin bearing the name of former Los Angeles Police Chief Bill Bratton, who appeared with Dorner in a picture taken years ago. On "CBS This Morning" Friday, Bratton described Dorner as "an incredibly dangerous individual" and reacted to the damaged coin.

"When you see that that coin that was given in friendship and respect has three bullet holes, it's certainly very chilling," Bratton said.

The shooting began around 4:45 a.m. in the community of Ladera Ranch, where a woman was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds, said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The suspect, described only as a man in his 20s, fled the scene in a sport-utility vehicle into Tustin, just north of the Ladera Ranch area, where he shot two more people in the process of stealing a Dodge truck. Those victims were receiving treatment at a local hospital.

The suspect then drove onto the 55 Freeway, where he either stopped on the highway to shoot at passing cars, or shot from a moving vehicle. He hit at least three vehicles, the police said, causing minor injuries to at least one person.

After exiting the freeway in nearby Santa Ana because he was low on gas, he got out of the truck and approached the driver of a B.M.W. that was stopped at a stop sign, carrying what witnesses said appeared to be a shotgun, according to Santa Ana police. The suspect ordered the driver out of the B.M.W., walked him over to the curb with his hands behind his head and executed him, the police said.

He then drove the B.M.W. back to Tustin, where he carjacked another vehicle at around 5:25 a.m., killing another victim in the process, Tustin police officials said. From there, he fled into the City of Orange, where police identified his vehicle. As law enforcement closed in, the suspect stopped, stepped out of the car and shot himself.

Police in Upstate New York's Herkimer County are looking for a suspect wanted for killing four people and wounding two others in a shooting spree in the villages of Mohawk and Herkimer.

The villages are about 65 miles east of Syracuse, on opposite sides of the Mohawk River in a region known as the Mohawk Valley.

The Herkimer Telegram reported that firefighters were battling a blaze at a building in Mohawk where the suspect apparently lived. He was described as a slender white male, age 50 to 60, sporting a white beard and wearing a flannel shirt.

He is believed to have abandoned his maroon vehicle, possibly a Jeep, that was spotted at the scene of the two shootings.

The suspect was believed to be armed with a long gun used in the killings, the Telegram reported.

The Observer-Dispatch (uticaod.com) reported that SWAT teams and a police helicopter converged on a jewelry store on Main Street in Herkimer where the suspect may have taken refuge, but later reported that the gunman may have fled on foot.

The suspect apparently set fire to his residential building in Mohawk, then went to John's Barber Shop shop in the same village where he killed two people and wounded two.

Via Gawker:

A school district in Oregon is catching some flak after it recently sicced two masked gunmen loaded with blank on a meeting room full of teachers as part of a surprise "readiness drill" for an active shooter scenario.

The two men burst into the meeting room at Pine Eagle Charter School in Halfway last Friday and opened fire on the teachers within.

After several long moments, the terrorized teachers realized the shooting was staged since they weren't, well, being shot to death.

The Oregonian reports that the school's staff had received training on what to do in case of an active shooting event from the Union County Sheriff's Office, and the district picked an in-service day during which students stayed at home in order to conduct the unannounced drill.

After the initial shock wore off, some of the teachers arrived at the realization that they would not have survived had this been a real-life school shooting.

Asked how many of the fifteen teachers would have made it out alive, Principal Cammie DeCastro responded, "not many."

She blew off critics who expressed concern for the possibility that some of the teachers could have been literally scared to death, or worse, could have been carrying a concealed weapon of their own and moved to respond in kind.

In fact, the latter may be an outcome of the failed drill as the district's Safety Committee and the School Board consider arming teachers or bringing in armed volunteers to watch over the children.

"For us not to know how we were going to respond is leaving us open," DeCastro said.

So proud, my alma mater is in the news!

A message threatening a shooting at Perry High School was found written in a boys’ restroom Thursday morning.

The message stated: “There’s going to bee a shooting”; “Beware this isn’t a joke”; “Friday”; and “Cancell school Friday,” according to a statement from Perry Schools Superintendent Jack Thompson.

Students and visitors at the high school are under “stay-put” procedure unless they receive approval from an authorized staff member. Students and staff also will be informed of this decision at an all-school assembly this afternoon, Thompson said.

On Friday, police will increase their visible presence on campus, he said.
“We appreciate the immediate response and investigative work of our Perry Police Department. Again, the police are confident this is a hoax,” Thompson said. “We will continue cooperating with the police investigation and will keep staff and community informed.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the building principal at 440-259-3511 or Perry Village police at 440-259-5292. Information also can be reported anonymously to the Safe Schools Help Hotline at 800-418-6423, extension 359, or by texting 66746 and typing “TIPS”.

Thursday’s threat comes just two weeks after shooting threats were found written in the girls’ bathroom on April 9, 10 and 11, and two months after an unfounded rumor alleged two students were planing a shooting at Perry Middle School on March 1.

AK-47-Wielding Gunman Fires 37 Times at Shocked Cops During Routine Traffic Stop

Terrifying dash-cam footage captures the moment a crazed motorist opened fire with an AK-47 rifle at police officers who had just pulled him over for a minor traffic violation in Middlefield, Ohio.

James Gilkerson, 42, exited his parked car and then fired 37 shots at the officers and their patrol car, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Officers Erin Thomas and Brandon Savage returned fire, killing Gilkerson.

Police have no idea why Gilkerson opened fire.

“He got of the vehicle, intending to kill my officers. We don’t know why he did it,” said Middlefield Police Chief Arnold Stanko. “He was a scumbag, and a terrorist, and he’s dead.”

In the March 10 video, Gilkerson exits his car—which the officers pulled over for running a stop sign—and sprays the patrol car with rounds of gunfire, cracking the windshield.

Thomas, reportedly outside the patrol car on the driver’s side, is heard shouting as bullets begin flying at them. Stanko said Gilkerson was shot several times, but kept firing; he even shouted, “Kill me.” Savage returns fire through the windshield, after which the officers kill Gilkerson.

Thomas lost a finger in the shootout; Savage sustained minor injuries to his left thigh.

Here’s the dash-cam footage of the shootout (Warning: Graphic imagery):

Stanko said eight 40-round magazines were found inside Gilkerson’s car, as well as some disturbing reading material (e.g., Backyard Rocketry: Converting Model Rockets into Explosive Missiles and Homemade Detonators: How to Make Them).

Original NYT story on the theater shooting was headlined "Florida Man Is Shot to Death for Texting During Movie Preview" and included the sentences:

The killing underscored the increased debate about when to use smartphones in public. In October, the singer Madonna was spotted texting during the Lincoln Center premiere of “12 Years a Slave.” That led Tim League, chief executive of Alamo Drafthouse, a Texas-based chain of boutique cinemas, to post on Twitter that she was banned from watching movies at his theaters.

I remember being dragged along with my class into a semi-trailer parked outside of our elementary school where some guy explained the dangers of driving around railroad crossing barriers. He pointed to a 7-segment countdown display on the wall and noted that someone dies from a train collision every time the clock counts down to zero. I don't understand the purpose of this education given that we were all under 10 years of age and could not drive. It just gave me a general feeling of dread and insecurity when in the car with my parents. He also explained to us that we should run toward the approaching train if our vehicle were ever stuck on the tracks. That way, post collision debris would not kill us.

Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:39 (ten years ago) link

anyway, DJP's countdown reminded me of this is all. sorry for the derail. run towards the derail. carry on.

Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:41 (ten years ago) link

post collision debris would not kill us

presumably because the train would kill you first? idgi

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:44 (ten years ago) link

i think he means if you're in a car about to get hit by a train, instead of running away from the train (in the same direction the car and its debris would be flying) run towards and past the train, in the opposite direction it's going.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:45 (ten years ago) link

I would think instinctively you'd run away from the track (perpendicular to the direction the train is travelling). I guess running towards the train might be better, but if the train derails, which seems likely, it might be dangerous to be too close to the track, even if you're upstream from the point of impact.

o. nate, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:48 (ten years ago) link

yes, I think there will be a wide debris cone that you are trying to avoid. The original instruction may have involved a smaller angle than 180 degrees relative to the train's vector to account for track proximity. I don't remember.

Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:52 (ten years ago) link

So, running at a 45 degree angle (where running toward the train is 0 deg) would be best?

nickn, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:56 (ten years ago) link

Of course then you have to worry about which side . . . I guess for that you'd take track curvature into account.

nickn, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:57 (ten years ago) link

run away from the train at a 65 degree angle, then turn around and run directly at its side

mental note - always carry a protractor

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:59 (ten years ago) link

well if the train's vector were pointed at 0 degrees, I'd imagine that running at something around 135 degrees is best. But if there's a safe distance from the track that must be obtained, you'd have to modify this accordingly while also knowing the velocity of the train.

Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 19:59 (ten years ago) link

ryan, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:01 (ten years ago) link

well if you thing about vision cones, it can be best to run toward a safe exit on the side of the room of the shooter. if you run away from the shooter, he will see you.

Sufjan Grafton, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:03 (ten years ago) link

actually if someone's shooting at people, the recommendation I've heard (from "safety professionals") is to freeze. shooters prone to shooting things that move.

lol sam goody! i forgot we had one there. i worked at maggie moos next to the carousel on and off for a year and a half after high school (it's a... "marble slate" now?), the borders right down the stairs from the carousel for half a year, and a single day at a horrible little kiosk that sold expensive spinning porch ornaments and closed down a month later

A witness said he was armed with an assault rifle, a knife and had bullets strapped across his chest “like he was Rambo,”

am0n, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 14:35 (ten years ago) link

FedEx employee Liza Aiken saw the shooter, a 19-year-old man she said was a loader, just before she heard gunfire. Aiken was doing address corrections on some packages when she said she “heard a clink.

“I looked to my left. I saw him standing there and the knife was on the ground. He dropped his knife. He had an assault rifle. He had bullets strapped to his chest like Rambo. I mean he looked like he was heading into war. As soon as I saw him, I ran the other way. I ran and made sure that people upstairs were gone. He was in all black. I think he had a camo vest. He had an assault rifle and bullets strapped to his chest.”

Aiken said she previously reported the shooting suspect to her superiors. She said he pointed a work laser in her eye.

My cousin had FOX News on while this was being covered, and as they were showing breathless wall-to-wall coverage, they had Rudy "9/11" Guiliani on the explain that this was probably a test run for ISIS, so they could study the news coverage and see how long it takes police and other responders to arrive. Then he once again pretended that someone other than George W. Bush was president on 9/11, since it was Bush that "kept us safe."
