♖♕♖ (am0n), Saturday, 9 January 2010 14:02 (fifteen years ago)

gotta say i dont know how connecting those dots would have allowed homeland security to stop abdulmutallab--probably they already know that al qaeda hates us

max, Saturday, 9 January 2010 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

maybe that cartoon is like "why is it asking us to connect the dots? it clearly reads 'terror'"

"nah lets go to the word jumble"

"al qaeda strikes again"

infuriating

kenan, Saturday, 9 January 2010 17:28 (fifteen years ago)

i'd like to think some sexting, 15 year old aspiring drunken whore saw the paper that morning, slowly placed it back on the kitchen table, looked out the window at the beaming sun and whispered to herself, "I have seen the error of my ways."

steady mmmobyn (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 9 January 2010 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

No, that's never going to happen, because we live in a country that offers OTC emergency contraception. This turns young women into little more than Godless sperm vacuums.

kenan, Saturday, 9 January 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

I'd like to think some responsible young woman with a "good reputation" saw the paper that morning, slowly placed it back on the kitchen table, looked out the window at the beaming sun and whispered to herself, "'Plan B' *does* sound liberating."

We want to apologize for the offensive, distasteful and completely humorless joke that was made and acknowledge the grave error in its production. We cannot begin to express how apologetic we are for everyone who has been hurt by our comic and its implied message.
We do, however, believe that something positive can come from this ugly mistake and hope that we, as members of the Notre Dame community, can take this as an opportunity to readdress the complex issues surrounding homosexuality and its treatment on our campus. Intolerance of homosexuality is a major problem on Notre Dame's campus. We tried to address it in our comics — using the tool characters to emphasize a mindset that we simply find ridiculous. In our last comic, we had the human character, our voice of reason, not understand the joke because of its absurd nature. Reasons, however, are not excuses. We consistently try to write comics that rely on shock value and now that we have gone too far, we realize that we have abused the privilege and responsibility of contributing to the Observer, and therefore, the Notre Dame community as a whole. This is not a joke that should have been made either in private or public. Poking fun at someone's identity in such a discriminatory manner is not funny. We wholeheartedly apologize for our comic and are aware of and truly sorry for the hurt that it has caused.

In our last comic, we had the human character, our voice of reason, not understand the joke because of its absurd nature.

no. morelike, the human character says "no idea" because that's how your supposed to respond to a joke. the joke teller gives the set-up in the form of a question. the straight man expresses his (real or feigned) ignorance by saying something like "I don't know, what?" or "I give up". then comes the punchline. calling the human character the "voice of reason" is obtuse as saying the true meaning of a knock knock lies in the line "who's there?".

i don't even understand why the right wing has such a problem with global warming, like even if the stats are made up, why is helping the earth bad?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

because rightwingers have been running on denialism and oppositional politics for decades now. If the dirty fucking hippies are fer it, they're agin' it.

Also, because much of them can't or won't think in systematic ways. Plus, they think that much of it is just scare-mongering by hippies and libruls who hate america and successful american businesses.

It's completely about narrative, and jack-shit about actual science. And there's dozens of more reasons why.

kingfish, Saturday, 23 January 2010 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

"Find out why helping the earth is taking money out of YOUR wallet, after this commercial break"

Also I don't think man-made global warming has been proved. And I've seen a lot of people post things like "should we all hold our breath to prevent global warming?" and they always talk about how we are having colder temperatures over the past couple years.

As idiotic as these things are, they still have an argument to cling to (unfortunately).

The truth is by politics as pro- or con- 'global warming', they have successfully derailed what should be a conversation about pollution's longterm affects on the human race. Instead of seeing studies on how corporate pollution are causing cancers every day and killing millions in the name of profit, we read about saving this or that rare animal, which really doesn't matter to most people.

The important thing is that we don't consider further regulation of businesses. By making it not about human safety but animals/Earth/gaia they have maintained control of the debate for decades, and with the full cooperation of environmentalists.

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

actually to be honest I'm not sure what racially insensitive connotations you're talking about, maybe I'm just blinded by the connotations that our president supports gang-raping the statue of liberty

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:11 (fifteen years ago)

the whole "scary black man raping our wimmenfolk" thing is what is being alluded to there

hmm ok

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

although the idea of our President as a statue molester moves that cartoon out of the realm of "horrifying" and into the realm of "deeply retarded and hilarious" so thank you for that, I was seriously at a loss for words and felt assaulted when I first saw it

ALLAH! *rolls on floor* (HI DERE), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

it's really one of the most offensive things I've seen on this thread

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 18:14 (fifteen years ago)

In an era in which nooses are casually flung about college campuses, I think showing a black rapist of the Statue of Liberty and implying that his 'friends' are coming over next time is mining traditional (or historical) American racist narratives that were behind lynching.

Re: dude on segway, when I lived down in the DC area, my wife worked at the Red Cross, whose headquarters are on E Street between 20th and 21st NW. Every afternoon when I picked her up there were dudes approaching people on the next corner south of there demonstrating segways. Bet it was one of those dudes.

Tourists can take Segway tours of historic spots around the Capitol Mall nowadays. BTW, Red Cross headquarters is where I go to donate blood every two months.

Tea Party has Obama complaining and comedians railing

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Sunday, 4 April 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

seriously omg:

For a while commemorative coins of the Obama inauguration were being offered as a TV special. One of the selling points was Obama's "warm and friendly smile." We now have a complete picture of a man with a big smile who is very calm leading the country. Before anyone gets all gooey let's try to see how far this goes to unifying the nation or study just how this helps us to digest the most outrageous spending of any administration in U.S. history.

Alfred E. Neumann (Mad Magazine) is calm and smiling but he doesn't make policy that affects all of us. Former African American Presidential candidate Alan Keyes doesn't seem very calm but we could use a great deal more of his kind of excitement in America and it would cost a whole lot less. Bob Parks is a black man who we rarely see smiling but, he always looks calm, yet few people are calmed by his hard hitting conservative views and articles. So what is this smiling and calm thing?

Twink Will Ferrell (J0hn D.), Sunday, 4 April 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

He seemed to be leading us into calm, but there was no calm. Nevermind the ten dozen intermediary steps; he is clearly a man who cannot produce calm. It's his fault.

Also see: the Democrats should have expected violence, what with all their continuing with the things we didn't like. Not our fault.

drinkin a carton of peace juice (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

In September 2007, the Columbus Dispatch published a Ramirez cartoon depicting Iran as a sewer (labeled with the word "extremism"), with cockroaches spreading from it over Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries of the middle east. Some commenters compared this with characterisations both of Jews in pre-Holocaust Germany and Rwandan Tutsis before the 1994 genocide.[1]

"If I don't get at least one phone call a day that says I'm a moron, I'm not doing my job," Ramirez says of his penchant for sparking controversy with his cartoons.

OK, I don't get much exposure to Day By Day except here and at lefty blogs trying in vain to deflect its merciless rain of laser-guided Truth Bombs, but am I correct in assuming the following things:

1. Dude has a huge, glaring, and hilariously predictable projection problem, and whenever a right-wing figure is caught with his dick in the cookie jar his immediate reaction is OH YEAH WELL DEMOCRATS NYAH. Like the strip club and dot-matrix printer strips above- blanket accusations of outrageous wrongdoing with no actual evidence to back them up, in service of an argument that boils down to "whatever we're doing, they're doing a thousand times worse".

2. Based on the "violence from the left" line in the last comic, I assume that the improbably-proportioned woman is the token Enlightened Liberal whose sole function is to concern-troll about how everything would be so much better if all leftists voted in lockstep with their wise and benevolent Republican masters, like how Glenn Renolds pretends to be an unaffiliated libertarian? (And then, I assume, has hot hot PG-13 sexxxytimes with our studly author surrogate, which raises some disturbing questions?) Or was the "violence from the left" line just a shitty joke about her position in the panel, and if so, does that make it better or worse?

I appreciate you taking the time to focus on this issue. When I was in the 6th grade, my lesbian feminist homeroom teacher explained to all of us that they, all the teachers of the 6th grade, had taken all the girls in the 6th grade and taught them various techniques for castrating us (they had, while we sat in the lunchroom and twiddled our thumbs waiting for them to finish indoctrinating the girls.) And after teaching them as many different ways to assault our genitals as possible, they had told the girls that they were to hurt us like this “any time you feel angry for any reason.” In other words, we didn’t even have to do anything. Our genitals were their outlet for any unhappiness they felt. When we tried to argue with the teacher that we would kick the girls and hurt them in the same place she replied, “no you won’t. It’s OK for them to hurt you there because you are boys and boys aren’t sensitive. Boys don’t have feelings. But girls ARE sensitive. And besides, girls have to have babies.”

Oh boy, sleep! That's where I'm a subordinate!

the big pink suede panda bear hurts (ledge), Thursday, 29 April 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

Last August, some tea baggers beat up an SEIU member at a health care reform town hall, which the right wingers then spun, as in 180 degrees, as a case of big, bad, communist violent unions beating up on the good citizens of the USA. I'm guessing this is a logical (ha) extension of that spin. Also a search for "T0m B@l@n0ff" and communist or thug returns some pretty lolsob results. So think basically this is a batshit attempt by rightwing cartoonists to paint all unions, especially strong unions (which SEIU is), as racist thugs, when we all know that is just the Teamsters and probably Bricklayers and Tuckpointers. (j/k, mostly)

Neil S, Thursday, 6 May 2010 11:56 (fifteen years ago)

Thinking about American government and the donkey comic:

Its funny how "anything less than blindly accepting every move the government makes means you're unpatriotic" was so intense during Bush, but now its this weird defense of their country from the evil government thing/holding onto their values (which is just as vague and emotional about getting wood over the word FREEDOM). An obvious transition, but the donkey comic makes more sense during the Bush years. Now it reads more like mixed emotions about authority/government- are republicans feeling oppressed or not? Are they not sure? I can see one reading that comic and thinking "Stupid democrats are such loud mouths why can't they respect laws and authority?" and then marching on Washington with Tea baggers yelling the (less specific) things the donkey is in that comic.

Evan, Thursday, 6 May 2010 13:17 (fifteen years ago)

And this isn't some slow realization about how irrational the people behind the comics are, just a little fascination with the mix of Bush era emotions (nothing but emotions) and Obama era emotions.

Evan, Thursday, 6 May 2010 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

Bush-era is at heart the core reason Tea Partiers don't trust the government, and was proof of the less extreme right's anti-gov't tendencies. Of course if any Tea Party/Right Wing group were to miraculously get control of the white house and all three branches, they would be just as eager to construct and enforce federal policy. Because a desire for power and control overrides any and all ideologies.

I have no idea what the fuck the Oliphant cartoon is about but he generally is not batshit, and Jack Ohman is definitely not batshit -- just some poor drawing designs.

righteousmaelstrom, Thursday, 13 May 2010 06:00 (fifteen years ago)

Oliphant's work, which from time to time employs ethnic caricatures, has occasionally been criticized. In 2001, the Asian American Journalists Association accused Oliphant of "cross[ing] the line from acerbic depiction to racial caricature".[1] In 2005, the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee expressed concern that some of Oliphant's caricatures were racist and misleading.[2] In 2007, two Oliphant cartoons produced a similar response.
