Yeah OC's getting the thick of today's storm right now -- looking pretty dark and miserable out there, but it's supposed to drop off in a couple of hours.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 21:14 (fifteen years ago)
Commenters on latimes.com article about the tornado "warning" are dissecting the papers apparently poor word choice.
I guess 'watch' is when conditions are ripe for a tornado but there isnt one. A warning implies there is one on the ground already.
― mayor jingleberries, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)
yes
― A™ machine (sic) (omar little), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)
as someone who grew up in rural IL i can tell you that this tornado warning in l.a. is like "stormwatch 2010" for a lengthy drizzle. a watch means the storm conditions are leaving open the possibility of a tornado, and a warning is gonna be accompanied by a siren and heading for the basement (which i did a few times.) watch out for wall clouds and the sky turning a weird greenish gray color, basically.
― A™ machine (sic) (omar little), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 21:47 (fifteen years ago)

seems like we've had more than our share of clear skies since autumn, i've been taking a 'series' of sunset/pre-sunset snapshots from my office building and i guess there's enough smog for those infamously beautiful l.a. sunsets but not enough to make the basin as dingy as usual

going to this on wednesday...
3/10 @ 8:00pm & 10:15pmBlast Phemy! 2:Text Of Light (feat. Lee Ranaldo) & ParallelJoin Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo, collaborating live with saxophonist Ulrich Krieger and guitarist Alan Licht, as he goes to the blasphemous extreme with live scores to the films of Stan Brakhage and other mid-century American cinema avant-gardists. According to Licht, Text of Light "does not perform soundtracks to the films of Stan Brakhage. Rather, it uses the films as a further element for improvisation, almost as (another) performer. While Brakhage intended for these films to be screened silently as films...(here) they are juxtaposed with the music, in a kind of real-time performance, mixed-media collage." But the evening doesn't stop there! The night also includes a screening of Parallel, an animation tour-de-force by mediamaker Huckleberry Lain, featuring music by Argentinean-born, L.A.-based electronic duo Languis.

It's been a while but there's a MTA wilshire express bus, the 720 I think. Transfer to a bus going north? Use google maps, should give you the exact schedule, route etc.

the traffic going east of santa monica on surface streets can get very hairy. it could be worth it to take the santa monica blue bus that goes to downtown l.a. (it goes on the freeway) and then hop on the red line into hollywood.
― kogi taco ergo sum (get bent), Friday, 19 March 2010 22:54 (fifteen years ago)
also, the marathon is this weekend and there will be massive reroutings and delays -- look into this before you go anywhere.
― kogi taco ergo sum (get bent), Friday, 19 March 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)
ugh. i need to get from santa monica to downtown on sunday morning--wonder what the best way will be so i don't get stalled by the marathon.
― by another name (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2010 22:58 (fifteen years ago)
I can tell you from daily experience that the traffic going east on the 10 (the blue bus' route) can get VERY hairy!!
Depends on your timing. Wilshire is usually good even during rush hour, so that 720 Metro Rapid might be better. Take it to Vermont and then red line north.
― Spencer Chow, Friday, 19 March 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)
re santa monica to hollywood -- you can also take one of the santa monica blue buses to ucla and then take the (metro) 2 bus up sunset into hollywood. the traffic on sunset isn't usually that bad.
― kogi taco ergo sum (get bent), Friday, 19 March 2010 23:00 (fifteen years ago)
Sunday Blue bus change:Line 10 from Santa Monica to Downtown LA: Bus will start service from Broadway at 4th St. where it will turn right to Santa Monica Blvd. Bus will travel regular route to Figueroa at 6th St., where it will turn right, then left again on Olive. Next, it will turn left on Third and left on Flower Street, where it will end service.
― Spencer Chow, Friday, 19 March 2010 23:01 (fifteen years ago)
Basically the easiest way is to hop on a bus on Santa Monica Blvd and ride for a very long time until you get to whatever cross street you're looking for in Hollywood (Highland or Vine?) and either walk up the last 1/2 mile or whatever to Sunset or Hollywood (i.e. towards the hills). It's a long trip on the bus though - even a rapid bus (at least an hour?), so bring a book or headphones.

this shouldn't affect santa monica-->downtown much right? i need to get from s.m. to 4th & figueroa, but it sounds like the changes happen after that.
the big question is, how is the marathon on sunday morning going to tie up the commute along the 10 route from s.m. to downtown.
― by another name (amateurist), Saturday, 20 March 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)
I was confused at first, but Broadway and 4th is where the bus starts in Santa Monica. "Bus will travel regular route" is the 10 East. It ends up at around 3rd and Flower. It's probably your best bet for Sunday, although the metro won't be affected obviously, so you could take a Wilshire or Santa Monica Rapid bus to the Red Line mid-city.

Sunday at 8 pm at machine project in echo park. Free.
Carla Bozulich and Sarah Lipstate are playing just one show in California as a duo, after having recently finished collaborating in NYC. They will probably be using mostly guitar, voice and pedals.
On this night the duo will be performing uncharted sounds aiming to generate “some kind of emotional collision with the cloying jungle anti-rhythms of everyday noise and streetlife ala mode”. Time Out NY described the last month as performing “…painful truths amid a claustrophobic roil of squalling guitar”.

Welcome to LA. Or welcome to Santa Monica, the LA of the West.
MTA is telling everyone to take Metro whenever possible Sunday into Downtown on Sunday instead of the bus because of the Marathon.
http://www.metro.net/around/service-advisories/los-angeles-marathon/
Here is how you should go IMO:
1. Take the 704 Rapid from Broadway & 2nd Street in Santa Monica (60 to 90 minutes) to Santa Monica Boulevard & Vermont. (The 704 bus won't run past Santa Monica Boulevard on Sunday).
2. Switch to Metro Red Line at Santa Monica Boulevard & Vermont and take it to 7th Street/Metro Center Station.
3. Ask a pedestrian which way Figueroa is and walk three blocks northeast to 4th.
Better yet, bring a GPS enabled phone or a compass to Downtown because everything is rotated 45 degrees and nobody down there knows where any of the streets are.
How long will you be in LA? Perhaps we should FAP after your meeting? We could do Los Feliz, whihc is on the Red Line also.

A CBS 2 News exclusive undercover investigation caught DWP workers drinking and driving on the job and going to strip clubs. This is the same agency that just raised electric rates and gave their workers a raise.
Linemen earn near six-figure salaries from the DWP -- taxpayer money to work on the power lines. It is hard work when the weather cooperates, but when it rains, they can't work on the poles. They are supposed to work in the yard.
But we found some of them go from hanging on the power poles to hanging out near the stripper poles. http://cbs2.com/local/DWP.Workers.Drinking.2.1665634.html

Oh that story about DWP is the bomb. Supposedly DWP is one of the most powerful, wealthy constituents in the city. They are in litigation with either my councilman, Eric Garcetti, or the mayor about the rate hikes.
One day the DWP sent me a $900 water bill.

there's also the 156 bus from north hollywood down the cahuenga pass to highland and santa monica blvd, and the 704 the rest of the way.

That semi that flipped over yesterday morning in Sylmar, on the 5, meant there was a two-to-three hour wait to get from Santa Clarita to the Valley. I ended up taking the 126 through Fillmore, and through the 23, Moorepark and Simi just to get to the 405.

― Sensational Howard (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:02 (fifteen years ago)
I finish school this next year and Mrs. Sensational Howard just after me, so I find myself turning to the dreaded question of will I stay here or not? I do not know the answer. Love this city but seriously cannot bear the traffic.
― Sensational Howard (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:03 (fifteen years ago)
Give in, give in. But the traffic is its own mystery.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)
The traffic is its own misery. Fed up of leaving an hour to get places and either showing up an hour late or waaaaay too early. This is not a city that is big on time management.
― Sensational Howard (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)
Trains and the Metro are, oddly enough, more reliable, really.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:25 (fifteen years ago)
Oh I'm sure. But my wife's commute (in the morning at least) is 20 mins, mostly on the 134. She tried Metro once - Gold Line downtown and then Red Line to N. Hollywood and it took well over an hour. Maybe there's a bus? But every time I'm back in London, I find myself walking instead of using transit just because it is such a joy. I miss being able to walk across an entire city, one that actually wants you to walk across and around it.
― Sensational Howard (admrl), Thursday, 22 July 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)
Hahah too true. LA walking is great for neighborhoods, but the whole city? Uh.
I propose, by the by, that we all have a midsummer afternoon drinks-and-chat catchup.

Hey I wanna bike too. I've never owned one before, gotta be cheap. What is it like riding a bike in LA, lukas?
― Tolaca Luke (admrl), Saturday, 7 August 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)
It depends on where you live and your tolerance for biking in traffic. (You're eastside, right? Maybe a bit hilly?) I will say that if you need to arrive places quickly and not sweaty, it's not ideal. I don't care about either of those, and I love biking in LA. Huge bike culture here that I was unaware of for years, too.
― LA river flood (lukas), Saturday, 7 August 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

I shifted half of a few boxes there this morning but I'd like to try getting rid of the last few hundred before dropping them at Goodwill. Not expecting to make a fortune and would even accept trade in some places. I called Canterbury in Pasadena and they will take a few, but not too many at once. These are all the CDs I didn't manage to Ebay, so am not trying that route.

I'm a regular at Record Surplus, so I feel that I have to rep for them. It's not a huge store, but it's not tiny either, and they've been there forever. If you have good stuff in good condition, you should get a good price there. If it's really common, they don't seem to give much. You can haggle there, though.

Difficult to say without more background information (independently wealthy? etc.). A relative of mine down there was a music teacher, but was working the grind like a lot of people down there - splitting time between Saddleback College, private instruction, and steady wedding/restaurant gigs.

weird story in the times
The bodies of two babies wrapped in Los Angeles Times newspapers from the 1930s were found in an apartment building basement near downtown L.A.
Workers found the bodies Tuesday evening when cleaning out the basement. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the remains were found with personal letters and tickets to the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The LAPD and the Los Angeles coroner's office are investigating. A coroner's official told The Times that the newspaper-wrapped bodies of the children had a mummified appearance.
[Updated at 6:50 a.m.: The grim discovery was made in one of L.A.'s oldest districts, a densely populated area of apartments west of downtown Los Angeles near MacArthur Park. Officials said they have launched an investigation, but it's unclear whether anyone who lived in the apartment during the 1930s is still in the area.
Law enforcement sources told The Times that the case is being classified for now as a "death investigation" and not a homicide. Officials will attempt to determine how the babies died -- likely with the help of forensic anthropologists. They will also look for any reports of missing babies during this period and attempt to find anyone who lived in the apartment at the time.]
LAPD Lt. Cory Palka told KTLA News the remains were found inside a steamer trunk in an apartment in the 800 block of Lake Street in the Westlake District.
The coroner's office is examining the remains to see if it can determine a cause of death. Authorities believe the babies have been deceased for seven decades but will perform tests.

mixed feelings about the protest/riot in westlake (over a policeman's shooting of a day laborer). on one hand, the fellow probably didn't have to die; on the other hand, he was intoxicated and wielding a knife, and refused to drop it when the officer ordered him to. and the officer was also latino, so the attack probably wasn't racially/ethnically motivated.

Just to play devil's advocate, Jody, while I think the frontier thing is (at least, for now) somewhat true, my point of comparison is London, and while it's too fucking exhausting and expensive to be a frontier, there is something about the density and energy that makes you feel like being productive. New York had that same effect on me too. LA is more like lock yourself in your studio for three days-type productive, way more hermetic and anti-social (which can be good as well as bad). I like how a lot of events are go to here have a kind of humility and homeyness you wouldn't expect from a city this size.

that's the feeling i've gotten when i've visited the calarts campus. it's so isolated that you *have* to throw yourself into your work and woodshed for a good long while. but i went to usc, which was a very very very different atmosphere -- you do your woodshedding out in the field, so to speak.
― corn smut (get bent), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)
Man, the healthcare thing really does dictate people's lives here in a way that still freaks me out. I totally get it - I had a huge expensive surgery on US healthcare a few years ago. It just seems unfair. Also not that I'm about to become a father or anything, but some of my friends in London are having kids and the difference in attitudes to maternity leave is just CRAZY.
xp - Yeah the calarts campus is totally depressing tbh. I work at home, but I know some people who (literally) live in their studios there.

my wife calls her job "the golden handcuffs" and it's kind of true even though she generally likes it and the situation she currently has. it's possible it would allow her to move anywhere and telecommute from wherever we choose to go, but it also may be totally limited to a choice between l.a. and nyc.

Los Angeles has both an astonishing choice of fresh, local food and a troubling childhood obesity rate. World-class farmers markets and neighborhoods with little access to fresh produce.
A new report seeks to change those disparities by recommending the creation of a regional food system that would increase low-income residents' access to healthy food and outlets for farmers' products while keeping more food dollars in the local economy.

But KCET plans to fill some of that void with more fare from American Public Television, which syndicates programs such as "Rick Steves' Europe," "Globe Trekker" and music specials like "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison" to pubcasters.
"We will become a much bigger customer of theirs," said KCET prexy/CEO Al Jerome. Conveniently, APT is holding its next programming marketplace next month in La Quinta, Calif.
KCET will also continue its relationship with Huell Howser, whose folksy California-based travelogues already make up a chunk of the station's sked.

the band in question
The Imperial Stars are what they appear to be; ROCK STARS! Living on the Edge they’re known for getting crazy and hanging out with their friends. Living the dream on stage under the heat of the lime light, Orange County California based amplified sound virtuosos cement themselves as one of the preeminent entertainment groups in popular music. Dynamic synthesizers, authoritative drum patterns and mainstay power vocals that remind even the average ear of greatness, The Imperial Stars pierced themselves into the heart of music history.

And that's it for Spaceland...
After over a decade and a half, Spaceland Productions is leaving 1717 Silverlake Blvd, and The Satellite is moving in.“It just reached a point where it was time for us to move on,” says Mitchell Frank who started Spaceland as a weekly club night in 1993. “We’ve had some incredible musical moments here, people met, fell in love, started life-long friendships, but it’s just time for a change.”The Satellite has agreed to honor all Spaceland’s booking commitments through March 2011. They say they won’t be changing much, but will be bringing in ex-Spaceland booker Jennifer Tefft to do in-house booking. Frank, along with business partner Jeff Ellermeyer, plan on opening a new space oriented towards dance nights and djs on the east side early next year.

Can we talk traffic?
I live in Highland Park, vaguely looking at a job in Culver City. Is the commute going to make me want to kill myself? I think I know the answer so I'm actually just fishing for positives. There's the possibility of (somewhat) flexible hours, if that makes a difference. Plus - it's a job.
― Border Lie (admrl), Thursday, 11 November 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)
if you do that commute, don't do the tempting 110 to the 10 route. take the 2 to fletcher, head to silver lake blvd and take it all the way west til it turns into beverly, take beverly to wilton, wilton to venice, venice west to culver city.
― omar little, Thursday, 11 November 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)
sweet bro, how long does that take? A leisurely 45?
― Broads of India (admrl), Thursday, 11 November 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)
at max, maybe? i dunno, depends on the time you're leaving too i guess. i take that general route to the west side, jumping on the 10 @ la cienega and getting off at bundy. this morning silver lake to bundy took me 40 min. i left home @ 9.

― Broads of India (admrl), Thursday, 11 November 2010 18:23 (fifteen years ago)
That route is in keeping with what I found to be best from East to West at rush hour times. Venice is pretty great for the crosstown commute.
Man, I don't miss that commute or that job. Woo.
― Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Thursday, 11 November 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)
I've probably had it easy all these years, taking the 210 against traffic. The real world suxxx
― Broads of India (admrl), Thursday, 11 November 2010 18:25 (fifteen years ago)
the real bitch with that commute is gonna be the trip home. traffic keeps getting worse heading back east in the evening. but just avoid the freeways as much as possible. culver city isn't too bad a spot to be heading too, though. a lot of the traffic nightmares i have come from trying to get past the 405 heading east on both surface streets and the freeway.

― Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Thursday, 11 November 2010 18:39 (fifteen years ago)
If you get later hours, be aware that the 10 W. freezes up for some weird reason around Culver City between 1030 and 11 AM. But yes, Venice is great for getting across town -- I use it sometimes to get from Culver City to La Brea during rush hour, and other than one or two slow sections, it's pretty smooth.
― Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 11 November 2010 18:45 (fifteen years ago)
i love my car but eastside to westside commute sux. avoid beverly hills at all costs, so that southern route probably the best u can do.

― Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 11 November 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)
I've done the Silver Lake-Beverly-Wilton commute quite a bit and it does seem like the word is out about this route - especially going east in the evening.
― Stockhausen's Helicopter Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 11 November 2010 23:37 (fifteen years ago)
protip: make a left on one of the side streets between western and wilton and go south to 2nd. you can avoid the backup that often occurs on wilton around there just before it becomes two lanes.
another protip: if you're heading back east on the 10 and need to take the 110 north through downtown, forget it because it's gonna suck. exit at grand (taking the split which leads to the 110 south) and make a left onto olive and peel through downtown all the way to 1st, make a left, and head to glendale ave and cruise through echo park.
― omar little, Thursday, 11 November 2010 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

culver city is the nu-eagle rock
― hair length/style continuity errors (buzza), Friday, 12 November 2010 00:52 (fifteen years ago)
Related protip: if downtown/Figueroa is horked up, take 7th St. west to Lucas (this is west of the 110 and near Good Samaritan Hospital). Turn right (north) on Lucas and keep going. Lucas eventually takes you to the big 1st./2nd/Beverly/Glendale Blvd. intersection. Continue to cruise as directed.

according to a neighbor, the guy had bragged about doing the hit and how he was going to make $10,000 for it. doesn't it seem odd that he would admit that? why would he spill the beans unless he *wanted* to get caught? is it possible he was a nobody who was getting paid to confess so the real killer would get off the hook?
really curious what his deal was.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/12/02/publicist.killed.apartments/index.html?hpt=C1
Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- Aspiring and retiring actors, struggling producers, hopeful musicians, low-income and disabled people fill the aging Hollywood apartment building where a "person of interest" in the Beverly Hills shooting death of celebrity publicist Ronni Chasen killed himself Wednesday.
The Harvey Apartments, a four-story former hotel, draws a diverse group because of its cheap rent, no deposit requirement, proximity to major film studios and a reputation for being roach-free, residents said.
"There's a lot of screaming goes on and hollering and the kind of ruckus you wouldn't find in the traditional apartment complex," said Eddie Burke, who moved in just two weeks ago.
Burke, who was the Tea Party candidate in Alaska's lieutenant governor's race this year, found the Harvey Apartments on the internet while looking for a place to stay while his son trains at a Hollywood gym to be a pro boxer.
If he had known about the neighborhood, he would not have rented here, Burke said.
"It's rough," he said. "The people here are diverse. It's really different from back home in Alaska."

Worst ... Unprofessional, untimely repairs, and RUDE night staff! From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 8/16/2010Years at this apartment: 2010 - 2010 I've lived here for almost a year ... each month is an attitude from the young girl in the office. Neither office employee knows anything in regards to real estate legailty nor professionalism or customer service. Not to mention homeless people in the halls ways smoking cigs on the fire escapes, cig smoke coming from each propped open door in the hall way, and Loud music from most of the apartments.
I'm currently dealing with the issue of my shower leaking to the downstairs. They have taken 6 days and are still not complete. Their option was to shower in the other unit down the hall....the one in which they had not cleaned from the previous tenants.
Coming from a very clean and respecting family I expected my personality would be appreciated in this building, but as I am seeing they are more kind to the ones who pay rent late and the ones who know not a thing in regards to their rights as tenants.
I do not recommend this apartment to anyone....there are cheaper apartments with WAY better secrity and office staff.........I am moving.

The two surviving members of The Beatles, Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will perform alongside digital images of George Harrison and John Lennon live at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday, August 27 as reported by the UK's Daily Star and other media sources.
The digitally reunited Beatles will perform with backing musicians at the Hollywood Bowl, where they played two shows together in August of 1964 and 1965. The concert will be a benefit for world peace and breast cancer charities according to reports.

i was wondering what all the ruckus was yesterday...
http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/los_angeles&id=7856892
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- It was a close call for three homeless men Tuesday morning when they ended up swimming for their lives in the Los Angeles River.
The incident happened at Glendale Boulevard in Atwater Village.
Firefighters said the river's water level was rising and it quickly reached the men's encampment, so they tried to swim across.
That's when the men ran into trouble. The river was about 18 inches deep and was moving very rapidly.
Someone spotted the men struggling in the water and called 911.
By the time paramedics arrived, the men had managed to get out, but they were in immediate need of attention because they were all suffering from hypothermia.
"Just a few minutes in the water, hypothermia will set in and then you lose the dexterity with your hands and then it's difficult to even pull yourself out," said Battalion Chief Craig Yoder of the Los Angeles City Fire Department.
Firefighters warned people not to get too close to the river. They said the banks are extremely slippery and it's very easy to fall in.
"Now is not the time to go out and do recreation in any of those areas nor is it authorized, and it's against the law at this point," said Battalion Chief Jack Wise.

No LA thread? Anyway, re: school closings, the superintendent said it was an "electronic threat" potentially targeting multiple schools, but no specific schools, so I guess they're searching every single school for suspicious stuff? Based on ... an email? Better safe than sorry, but that's a pretty low bar for something that disrupts hundreds of thousands of people. Has any major city ever shut down its entire school system before, based on a non-specific threat?

i thought it was odd but i sense it's something more than a kid calling it in because he doesn't want to take a test, i imagine there's something to it that makes them think it's more credible.

640,000 kids affected, plus parents and caretakers.

And yeah, "credible" is a tough word to parse, but a voicemail reportedly left for a school board member?

Voicemail, reportedly.

I thought it was referring to some sort of cyberattack, duh.

I guess the threat came from overseas (or at least an IP address in Frankfurt). Also, reportedly the NYC schools got the same threat and determined it a hoax.
New York City officials said in a news conference late Tuesday morning they received the same threat as the Los Angeles schools but deemed it a hoax.Mayor Bill de Blasio called the threat "so generic, so outlandish" that they concluded it was not credible, citing word choices and capitalization used in the email.Police commissioner William Bratton said it would be a "huge disservice to our nation" to shut down New York City schools based on the threat, which he said was sent to school districts across the country.

jeez louise, is this all it takes to nearly shut down a city?
i feel like the very same people who go around decrying "terrorism" constantly are the same people who make certain that as an asymmetrical tactic it's completely effective.

I'm going to change my VPN to Frankfurt and email every school in the nation to warn them that if they keep wasting our time with the PARCC test, "bad things might happen."

I can't recall a single instance of a bomb threat turning out to involve an actual bomb
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 15 December 2015 17:48 (ten years ago)
haven't been keeping up but puzzled why they didn't immediately involve the fbi or a force far more skilled than the los angeles police department.

from what I can tell they didn't even involve the LAPD. u_u
