The "Hitler ranting with alternate subtitles" thread

There are at least a couple hundred of these now. Post your favorites here.

One of my favorites is apparently also one of the favorites of the director of the original movie: Hitler can't get tickets to Billy Elliott.

"I immediately regret telling you that." Should be a new ILX catchphrase.

kenan, Saturday, 16 January 2010 02:38 (sixteen years ago)

After I saw five of these, I thought it was annoying. But after I saw twenty, I started to think about what an interesting writing exercise it is.

kenan, Saturday, 16 January 2010 02:41 (sixteen years ago)

If you like, this can also serve as an RIP thread, because the meme seems in constant threat of becoming tiresome. Then again, that depends on how funny the writing is. Just when I think I hate these things, I shoot soda out my nose at one of them.

my favorite, which I think is also one of the earlier ones, is the Cincinatti Reds one

See, I don't get the Reds one. But that's the thing. You're provided the delivery, and you fill in the subject matter. And the subject matter is disappointment, then outrage, then quiet rage and possibly acceptance. It's like Kübler-Ross for nerds.

You're provided the delivery, and you fill in the subject matter. And the subject matter is disappointment, then outrage, then quiet rage and possibly acceptance.

no, the Reds one is great exactly because it gives more interesting readings to the visual/dramatic development - that resignation moment when he dismisses everybody is actually just a "would everybody who is not a complete moron please leave the room?" & plus the phrasing & the jargon is just so fuckin great. "I suppose you think Josh Fogg is gonna win the Cy Young award? While we're at it, maybe we should bring back Eric Milton and Jason Larue?" soldier: "Eric Milton was top notch!"

gets me every damn time

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Saturday, 16 January 2010 03:08 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I have no idea what you're talking about.

kenan, Saturday, 16 January 2010 03:10 (sixteen years ago)

dude you don't actually have to know anything about the Reds to get that one - it's like Damon Runyon only with baseball stannage replacing the mobster jargon

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Saturday, 16 January 2010 03:13 (sixteen years ago)

I was going to say, Kenan, you're overthinking it! I know none of the names in that clip and I was loving it still.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 January 2010 03:15 (sixteen years ago)

I think maybe I don't understand the fundamental sports-liking sensibility that informs it. I don't know anything about any sport. And I only like baseball because it's an excuse to drink slowly.

kenan, Saturday, 16 January 2010 03:18 (sixteen years ago)

I have long ago realized that not enjoying or understanding sports or anything competitive besides maybe chess and Scrabble puts me at a GIANT conversational disadvantage with basically every male on the planet and half of the females. I've tried. I don't get the appeal.

kenan, Saturday, 16 January 2010 03:22 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, so mentally substitute all the player positions for various levels of Scrabble champions and assume that Hitler is reacting to news of a bet put on the premise of game success of a blind illiterate.

Things that piss me off:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDiDATbIG-o

kenan, Saturday, 16 January 2010 03:25 (sixteen years ago)

I just don't see how you need to know anything about baseball for "would everybody who is not a complete moron leave the room?" -> most everybody leaves, but four guys stay = these are the guys whose response was "well, I'm kind of a complete moron" to be pretty fucking funny

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Saturday, 16 January 2010 03:29 (sixteen years ago)

I am not going to argue about Hitler on the internet.

kenan, Saturday, 16 January 2010 03:33 (sixteen years ago)

The Reds one is great.

Like this one too (look out, it's about airplanes so you *may* not get it)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF_P77VEPKA

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 16 January 2010 05:42 (sixteen years ago)

The "leave the room" moment is generally the most poorly executed moment in these in my opinion. I don't like it in the baseball one because it requires, like you said, these guys to be like "well yes I am a omplete moron." And I just find it funnier to pretend like this is some kind of face value thing and he's dismissing a large chunk of the crowd that he doesn't want to see the ensuing meltdown.

I dislike the moment in the Oasis one upthread for different reasons. He says "everyone who doesn't think Oasis is the best band..." but the thing is none of these underlings should have the balls to admit that they don't think Oasis is the best to fucking HITLER of all people, and walk out, especially when he's about to rage like this.

I'm probably not very good at explaining myself here, but I do think the one they did with Hillary Clinton during the primaries is a good example of executing this particular moment well.

Mister Jim, Saturday, 16 January 2010 05:56 (sixteen years ago)

That one about the planes executes the moment well also. It's like he has to hold in his rage until the crowd leaves. But why is he holding in that rage for their benefit? There has to be some kind of believable motivation for that.

I always thought the one about Sheffield United being relegated in 2007 was the first one but apparently there was a Spanish one about flight simulator games in 2006 and then the XBox one. Anyway, the Sheffield United one certainly the one the made me laugh hardest, and it's only watching it again now that I realise it uses a different scene to all the ones I watched later.
