So I just saw the olympic torch flashing past. Everyone was waiting for it about half a mile away, with about 200 protestors and at least as many police and media. It looked like the blocked road was going to make it a no-show so I headed off because I had to go to work. 15 minutes and half a mile away from where it was supposed to be it suddenly showed up, mounted on the ex-mayor's wheelchair and surrounded by about 100 cops/volunteers etc all shouting "GET BACK", "CLEAR OUT OF THE WAY" and firing off sirens etc. So bizarre. My 4 year old daughter was like "When do we shout hooray?".

Re luge/bob/skeleton watcher-friendliness: for yesterday's speed-skating (long-track), TV occasionally had a line sliding along the ice showing the equivalent position of the current leader, that would be great in those sports as well I think.

Winter Olympics so weird.

We're getting biathlon here and it is hi-larious to watch: dudes on skies on a track who periodically kneel down and shoot stuff, then get back up and ski more.

It looks like it would rule to do, but still, it's a silly mix of activities, and the only thing compelling about watching it is that it's silly.

I figure we're getting it right now b/c a French dude is winning.

ski poles are generally pretty strong! I've broken them before, but only under serious load. guessing the mogulers are using carbon fiber guys, which are flexy and tolerate compression well.

okay, chinese skaters - the ones who won the silver - the ones who won the gold weren't so hot last night - were amazing last night. but i have a question: if every other skating team that skated last night - bear in mind that these are the greatest skaters on earth - couldn't make it thru their routine without falling, doesn't this tell us something? like, maybe the routines are too hard? maybe these are the routines that people should be doing 20 years from now. i dunno, i just found it aggravating. i don't think the routines are too hard, they obviously pick routines that they can do in practice. it's the mental challenge to do it during olympic competeition.

We were getting some snowboarding but now it's back to biathlon b/c the French dude Jay is winning again---though this time it's PURSUIT. Evidently b/c Jay won the gold in sprint he got prime position in this event, which seems wrong to me: the events ought to be independent.

oops Jay just fucked up, though, so it's all gonna change.

Pursuit rules are kinda fucked up (one race counts for two golds), but it makes for great tv! :D

Organizers screwed up the women's pursuit btw: Sweden's Anna-Carin Olofsson-Zidek was held for 14 seconds too long at the start. The seconds were given back at the finish (moving her past Tora Berger to 4th), but of course this is a major fuckup anyway...

scott that's one of the things that makes figure skating so fascinating - that elusive perfect program and the fact that people fall all the time. it's always in the back of everyone's minds and when they line up for a difficult jump you hold your breath to see if it's landed correctly. ime i've also found that it's IMPOSSIBLE to root for a figure skater to fall, it's just too humiliating
