Zoolander 1 was awesome F U if you disagree. Sucks that Jonah Hill is going to be in this though.

"If you remember, Zoolander came out on September 28, 2001, right after 9/11 so no one ever saw the pic in theaters."

THANKS A FUCKING LOT 9/11.

And even apart from that, it's a great cable viewing. Not the funniest thing in the world, but not insulting to your status as a human, either. That's all I expect out of most broad comedies anymore.

kenan, Friday, 26 February 2010 06:31 (fifteen years ago)

It's hard to remember if I didn't laugh because it wasn't funny or if it was because I was still so affected by 9/11. Such a painful blur.

I know people like that, or used to. It got them just right.

It's not that they are bad, nasty, or unaware of their ridiculousness.

Just that that is what they are.

"I wasn't like every other kid, you know, who dreams about being an astronaut, I was always more interested in what bark was made out of on a tree. Richard Gere's a real hero of mine. Sting. Sting would be another person who's a hero. The music he's created over the years, I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's making it, I respect that. I care desperately about what I do. Do I know what product I'm selling? No. Do I know what I'm doing today? No. But I'm here, and I'm gonna give it my best shot. "

http://www.amazon.com/Corrections-Novel-Jonathan-Franzen/dp/0312421273

Jonathan Franzen's exhilarating novel The Corrections tells a spellbinding story with sexy comic brio, and evokes a quirky family akin to Anne Tyler's, only bitter. Franzen's great at describing Christmas homecomings gone awry, cruise-ship follies, self-deluded academics, breast-obsessed screenwriters, stodgy old farts and edgy Tribeca bohemians equally at sea in their lives, and the mad, bad, dangerous worlds of the Internet boom and the fissioning post-Soviet East.

Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ (dyao), Friday, 26 February 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

ok, so here's what that BOOMING POST meant.

essentially, i saw Zoolander place very high on the ilx film poll (which i didn't vote in) and smdh. then i saw the Corrections place #1 in the ilx book poll (which i didn't vote in) and smdh furiously.

basically when DA CROUP asked me why i didn't like zoolander, i felt like i SHOULD have some morbsy paragraph-long diatribe about why it sucks. but honestly, i barely remember the movie. I just remembered that i fucking hated it. i felt an actual tinge of critic's guilt that i couldn't back up my apparantly challopy opinion with evidence, and then realized why should i watch this awful movie again just to prove my point to ILX massive?

Gary in recent years had observed, with plate tectonically cumulative anxiety, that population was continuing to flow out of the Midwest and toward the cooler coasts.... Gary wished that all further migration [could] be banned and all Midwesterners encouraged to revert to eating pasty foods and wearing dowdy clothes and playing board games, in order that a strategic national reserve of cluelessness might be maintained, a wilderness of taste which would enable people of privilege, like himself, to feel extremely civilized in perpetuity.

the corrections isn't the best anything, but i assume it won the book poll because a lot of people read it because of the whole oprah hype/controversy and it's a perfectly competent novel, so most of those people probably liked it okay. that's how polls work; it doesn't seem worth getting mad about.

I couldn't finish The Corrections because I hated every single character in it. Which I gather was part of the point? But I don't need that to be anything resembling part of the point of a book that I'm investing so many hours reading.

Zoolander is funny. It is not the funniest movie ever, or even of the past decade, but it does what it does well enough. And much better than the bulk of comedies do. Seriously, guys. This is no Bringin' Down The House here. And it definitely does reward multiple viewings. It's a "sittin' around with friends and having some beers and chatting while watching a funny movie that feels funnier when you've had a few beers with friends" kinda movie.

I'm also generally a semi-stan of that era of Ben Stiller's smaller, indier stuff, though. I haven't watched anything he's done in years aside from Tropic Thunder, but I'd give a "hey, that's a decent movie I'd watch again" thumbs up to Zoolander, Mystery Men, Permanent Midnight, and Zero Effect (which really is quite a good movie, in my estimation).

SNEEZED GOING DOWN STEPS, PAIN WHEN PUTTING SOCKS ON (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 26 February 2010 19:45 (fifteen years ago)

I'll rep for Mystery Men because Bob Burden is fucking awesome and the fact that it got made at all is a small miracle

mark roflr (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 26 February 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)

I would've paid a lot of money to see a straight Mystery Men adaptation that didn't look like it had been run through a Tim Burton filter. I'm fairly convinced that the cheaper it had looked, the funnier it would've been.

SNEEZED GOING DOWN STEPS, PAIN WHEN PUTTING SOCKS ON (Deric W. Haircare), Friday, 26 February 2010 19:50 (fifteen years ago)

Permanent Midnight is about 100x funnier once you find out it's about ALF.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 26 February 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

there's some analog to ALF in the movie, right? I can't remember if its thinly veiled or not. that movie was weird. not enough jokes.

mark roflr (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 26 February 2010 19:58 (fifteen years ago)

i kept waiting for the scene to cut when he goes to spike a vein in his neck. thats some good "acting" imo

johnny crunch, Friday, 26 February 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

There's an astonishing amount of woe and sorrow connected with ALF.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 26 February 2010 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

ALF would make a better book than the Corrections, at any rate.

ok guys zoolander is kinda like spinal tap in that it is an exaggerated caricature of an entire culture that many of us may not be all that familiar with. like spinal tap there are an enormous amount of 'in jokes' that perhaps are not digested upon one viewing. and also like spinal tap much of the humor can seem 'idiotic' and be dismissed by those who are not turned on by this. and also like spinal tap there are others who are so capitvated by the humor that they will qoute the movie and lol perhaps for hours on end, perhaps re-enacting entire scenes. i love both movies and at one point in my life watched them weekly.

Anton Levain (jdchurchill), Friday, 26 February 2010 21:12 (fifteen years ago)

And even apart from that, it's a great cable viewing. Not the funniest thing in the world, but not insulting to your status as a human, either. That's all I expect out of most broad comedies anymore.

― kenan, Friday, February 26, 2010 1:31 AM (14 hours ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Yeah so I had this on while I was home sick a couple weeks back, and you know what the thing is? It's insanely well-structured! The whole movie winds up feeling like it was the length of a sitcom and only had a handful of scenes (opening, coal mine, day spa, Hansel's place, finale), and the jokes are pretty evenly spread out (so it doesn't get dramatically more or less funny in any given section), and it just zips along really, really quickly. So I think that's what makes it really watchable and good on cable -- it's organized so, so much better than most movies like this.

oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Friday, 26 February 2010 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

(NB I know there are a hell of a lot more scenes than that, but it's all pieced together so efficiently that it almost doesn't matter.)

I think if I someone had asked me to think up 100 things I liked about zoolander, I still wouldn't have come up with... 'efficiency'

i had to walk around the NYC premiere blockade at Alice Tully Hall last night (to get to some experimental queer films). There were star photos being taken inside, thought i saw Stiller's head.

Will probably see this Friday, albeit with super low expectations.

Just saw this. I enjoyed it, plenty of funny bits. Don't know why it's getting panned. Sure, there's no coherent plot but who expected after the first?

I remembered finding the first one funny when it came out, but I revisited it 2 or 3 years ago and wanted to stick a screwdriver in my ear.

Edelstein:

How bad is Zoolander 2? It’s Batman and Robin bad. It’s so bad that it makes you feel sorry for the scores (literally) of celebrities who show up in cameos, even the ones (Anna Wintour, Tommy Hilfiger, Susan Sarandon, Ariana Grande, Kimye ...) who actively resist your sympathy, whom you maybe want to see taken down a peg.

Stiller gets away with targeting low-hanging fruit because he understands chronic narcissism from the inside...

wait who has a grudge to settle with Susan Sarandon?

she's been pretty damn irritating over the last 20 years, off screen usually

i thought the first movie was funny. not really wanting to see this in a theater but a friend's house w some pizza and beer sounds good.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 13 February 2016 17:56 (nine years ago)

filled with puerile and unfunny gags; along with gratuitous cameo appearances by everyone from Katy Perry to Willie Nelson

see all this sounds awesome

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 13 February 2016 18:01 (nine years ago)

all i want to know is, is David Bowie in this one?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 13 February 2016 18:03 (nine years ago)

friend's house w some pizza and beer sounds great!

Anchorman 2 (and other lame years-too-late comedy sequels i guess) seem to have lowered people's expectations going in but somehow even those low expectations haven't been met.

piscesx, Sunday, 14 February 2016 13:08 (nine years ago)

anything gif-worthy in this one?

Fucking thing sucks.

flappy bird, Monday, 15 February 2016 19:22 (nine years ago)

Thanks for taking one for the team, flappy bird.

The first one is perfect, shot for shot, word for word. This thing is a mess, and it knows that it sucks. The endless celebrity cameos are an attempt to make up for weak jokes and an aimless script. OMG IT'S NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON! Fuck you. They run with the frivolousness of the whole thing and try to make that the joke, like 22 Jump Street or Anchorman 2. Very frustrating. Oh well.

flappy bird, Monday, 15 February 2016 19:45 (nine years ago)

yeah well fuck you for even seeing it at all
