essentially, i saw Zoolander place very high on the ilx film poll (which i didn't vote in) and smdh. then i saw the Corrections place #1 in the ilx book poll (which i didn't vote in) and smdh furiously.

basically when DA CROUP asked me why i didn't like zoolander, i felt like i SHOULD have some morbsy paragraph-long diatribe about why it sucks. but honestly, i barely remember the movie. I couldn't finish The Corrections because I hated every single character in it. Which I gather was part of the point? But I don't need that to be anything resembling part of the point of a book that I'm investing so many hours reading.

Zoolander is funny. It is not the funniest movie ever, or even of the past decade, but it does what it does well enough. And much better than the bulk of comedies do. Seriously, guys. This is no Bringin' Down The House here. And it definitely does reward multiple viewings. It's a "sittin' around with friends and having some beers and chatting while watching a funny movie that feels funnier when you've had a few beers with friends" kinda movie.

I'm also generally a semi-stan of that era of Ben Stiller's smaller, indier stuff, though. I haven't watched anything he's done in years aside from Tropic Thunder, but I'd give a "hey, that's a decent movie I'd watch again" thumbs up to Zoolander, Mystery Men, Permanent Midnight, and Zero Effect (which really is quite a good movie, in my estimation).

I'll rep for Mystery Men because Bob Burden is fucking awesome and the fact that it got made at all is a small miracle

I would've paid a lot of money to see a straight Mystery Men adaptation that didn't look like it had been run through a Tim Burton filter. I'm fairly convinced that the cheaper it had looked, the funnier it would've been.

Permanent Midnight is about 100x funnier once you find out it's about ALF.

ok guys zoolander is kinda like spinal tap in that it is an exaggerated caricature of an entire culture that many of us may not be all that familiar with. like spinal tap there are an enormous amount of 'in jokes' that perhaps are not digested upon one viewing. and also like spinal tap much of the humor can seem 'idiotic' and be dismissed by those who are not turned on by this. and also like spinal tap there are others who are so capitvated by the humor that they will qoute the movie and lol perhaps for hours on end, perhaps re-enacting entire scenes. i love both movies and at one point in my life watched them weekly.

Yeah so I had this on while I was home sick a couple weeks back, and you know what the thing is? It's insanely well-structured! The whole movie winds up feeling like it was the length of a sitcom and only had a handful of scenes (opening, coal mine, day spa, Hansel's place, finale), and the jokes are pretty evenly spread out (so it doesn't get dramatically more or less funny in any given section), and it just zips along really, really quickly. So I think that's what makes it really watchable and good on cable -- it's organized so, so much better than most movies like this.

(NB I know there are a hell of a lot more scenes than that, but it's all pieced together so efficiently that it almost doesn't matter.)

I think if I someone had asked me to think up 100 things I liked about zoolander, I still wouldn't have come up with... 'efficiency'

way late to this crazy convo but Tropic Thunder was like 18 months ago and I think it'd be kinda weird if u like Zoolander and hate that --- Stiller's been mostly insufferable for a long long time but generally i fuck with those 2 movies, i guess it's to his credit that the stuff he writes tends to be way better than the stuff he just stars in

meet the parents 1 & tropic thunder are his two stone cold classics -- & i guess his role in happy gilmore

Watched Zoolander for the first time in years back around xmas and it wasn't even half as funny as I remembered it being. Even Mugato was kind of *zzzzzz* for the most part, and I used to LOVE him.

I would like to register my severe objections to Lamp saying upthread that The Family Stone was a good movie. Lamp is mistaken and was clearly drugged, either at the time of viewing or the time of posting, or both.

I have never seen Zoolander.

One of my friends in the military said at his base they used to literally watch this movie every single night, and as a result it became his favorite movie.

I think it's kind of like say, Super Troopers (which came out around the same time), in that it doesn't really hold up if you're looking for more than it really is. I really like the movie but totally can see why some don't.

Lamp said Family Stone is "likable" and better than Meet The Parents -- gotta side w/ Lamp on both counts

meet the parents is pretty good, zoolander's freakin great... i like ben stiller a lot! he's one of those guys where my opinion of him doesn't degrade at all no matter how much crap he churns out. when he has the right material he's hilarious.

LOL why is it one of those movies that's always on? I watch TV but I guess I don't really flick much. Either I watch when I know what's going to be on or on Netflix/Hulu.

i had to walk around the NYC premiere blockade at Alice Tully Hall last night (to get to some experimental queer films). There were star photos being taken inside, thought i saw Stiller's head.

Will probably see this Friday, albeit with super low expectations.

Just saw this. I enjoyed it, plenty of funny bits. Don't know why it's getting panned. Sure, there's no coherent plot but who expected after the first?

I remembered finding the first one funny when it came out, but I revisited it 2 or 3 years ago and wanted to stick a screwdriver in my ear.

The first one is perfect, shot for shot, word for word. This thing is a mess, and it knows that it sucks. The endless celebrity cameos are an attempt to make up for weak jokes and an aimless script. OMG IT'S NEIL DEGRASSE TYSON! Fuck you. They run with the frivolousness of the whole thing and try to make that the joke, like 22 Jump Street or Anchorman 2. Very frustrating. Oh well.
