They too can bleed for days on end every month and come out of it alive. They can grow a baby inside them. They pay attention pretty good to each other. Most of them are willing to help. Their clothes are fun to look at. They giggle.

i used to like illustrating men more than women, the angles are more dramatic and interesting at least in the exaggerated comic book style. i took to drawing old men's faces in my late teens and I do it almost exclusively now. don't know what to make of it though, nor do I know what it has to do with love, if anything. most men are pitiable and the length they go to hide it gives you that poignant frisson that's the stuff of like, all of media so i don't need to go into it do i. searching for a man's inner life isn't more 'rewarding' but it's definitely more fruitful if only because women present more of a maddeningly moving target that you (I) can't glean as much from. sort of a backhanded compliment but hey.
― tremendoid, Thursday, 24 July 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)
i do think i love those types of guys who're selfless in that everyday way, the guy with the easy smile, who can create a bond with any kid he meets, doesn't think twice about helping you move and offers his truck (that he usually uses to haul lumber cuz he knows how to build house from scratch btw), i wish i had more of that. i think 'love' is frustrating how i think of it, and i'm not talking about 'gay shit' anxiety; 'admire' might be an entirely appropriate equivalent. true, deep, firsthand admiration is just as rarefied in my experience, not that that's just necessarily a guy thing, i dunno.

so i just recently moved from pretty much an all male office to one with slightly more women than men. the thing i've noticed is sometimes women who work here talk a lot. I mean, a whole lot. about their dad's surgery, their husbands, their route home and why they decided to get crazy and try a new one yesterday, the reasons for all the PTO days they've taken in the last year. and there you are, just trapped in your tiny office, with no window to jump out of.
so, dudes, way to STFU. seriously.

― homosexual II, Thursday, 24 July 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)
i don't mind chatty at all if it's the least bit funny and/or entertaining. and to be fair, my friend Anna has the same problem with the men in her office constantly shootin' the breeze about nothing in particular (in a totally non-sexual way, as far as she can tell). So there you go.

no matter how many times i read this, the description of said guy comes off as creepy to me. which possibly either means that i am creepy and projecting, or all men are creepy, or i have watched too many a&e true crime programs, and i can't help but think that said dude's "easy smile" is all about the rape shed that he's constructed "from scratch" in his backyard a la btk killer or something
― dell, Thursday, 24 July 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

― admrl, Thursday, 24 July 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)
i was hanging out at my mom's place a couple of weeks ago, and at one point, prompted by some folly of my brother's doing, she went on this whole rant about how "men don't know how to lie", and how women are so much more attuned to social nuance than are guys
i tend to think that's true
which feeds into admrl's declaration. it is sometimes difficult not to see men as being these straight-line robots...i could expand, but it will just end up turning into some ill-conceived analogy regarding the shape of different sexes' bodies, and so forth
― dell, Thursday, 24 July 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)
I suck at lying for social niceties. Girls make more of an effort to make you feel comfortable. Girls are less likely to say 'yeah, I don't know, I'll see what I'm doing that day'

I mos defs grew up with 'one of the boys' friendship setups, but plenty of chicks can 'bro down' too – have a silly, good fucking time doing whatevs. With bourbon, too, why not. And these days I'd much rather hang out with chicks than dudes. You can shop, talk about clothes, etc., without making anyone vomit while you're still getting your Maggie & Hopey on (w/out the sexual tension). It's somehow easier to have a spontaneous, silly plan and it goes through, like walking around town drunken and deciding to hide in someone's bushes and watch their barbecue. Deciding to put on Halloween costumes before cleaning the house as some kind of funny motivation. Designing a flag for something you think is awesome...all things only my galpals would do. They've got nothing to prove or to lose, so everything's open to be funny and exciting, even bad times. It's easier, more poignant sharing personal tragedy, and any time I've been in a bad fix with not having enough food, it's been one of my babes who comes over and cooks me something, no guilt or martyrdom about it. Just friends helping each other out. Once women grow up they are pretty fucking awesome.
Women tend to be a lot more polite, too, in the small but important ways like expressing gratitude, actually showing up to things when they said they would, etc...the ones I know, anyway.
― Abbott, Thursday, 24 July 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, i have always been slightly bewildered by women who are of the "i hate other women" school
my male friends are all ridiculously cool and softies like me and so forth, so i am very fortunate in that respect. i feel like i could say the most ridiculously insulting thing to them, and they would respond with concern for my well-being, rather than bloodying my nose...
― dell, Thursday, 24 July 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)
Once women grow up they are pretty fucking awesome.
srsly this is true! i have so many awesome women in my life these days, i don't even know what i did to deserve it. but it took a while for this to happen. which obv had a lot to do with 'growing up' and probably with not cocooning in a relationship with a guy in the last couple of years. life is funny. i am glad.

― rrrobyn, Thursday, 24 July 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)
I've never been a fan of the "women are this/men are that" conversations because there will always be exceptions to any general rule, even if we could prove it exists (which we can't). For example if you look around you will find studies that claim that women do indeed talk more than men and you will find studies that say they actually talk an equal amount. It may be fun to occupy our minds with this stuff, but at the end of the day no real conclusions can be reached, and inevitably, someone somewhere will be offended or unaccounted for.

― dell, Thursday, 24 July 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)
a generalization (or, generalizing in genearl) doesn't have to be totally discarded because it doesn't apply to every single member of a certain group. if you say you don't generalize for this reason you are either lying or very insufferable.

― t0dd swiss, Saturday, 26 July 2008 00:23 (seventeen years ago)
this thread is hilarious. there's really no need to make generalizations or trash the opposite sex in order to answer the question. when I read the topic, I was like "oh cool a positive thread".
one thing I love about my male friends is that I feel I can talk about anything with them. I can relate hilarious stories of an embarrassing and/or gross nature that I would never share with my gf for fear of her being totally turned off by me. I can vent anger about something a woman did without feeling like they will automatically play devil's advocate, even if I am being irrational. I do happen to have some really straight-up guy friends who will do this if I am clearly being a moron, though, which is cool too.
then there's the whole matter of similar interests. I know there are women out there with kick-ass tastes in music who are totally obsessed with extreme metal and other aggressive noisy music that don't have any decipherable lyrics, but I don't know any personally and it's easier to meet dudes who do share that taste. Ditto for sports, comic books, action movies, computer nerd shit, etc.
I'm sure most women feel the same about their friends and there isn't anything wrong with that.

Yeah, how can we get Noodle in here to say the word "Gothtards" once more. That was brilliant.

I think I'm ok now. Though I'm not so emerald these days.
― o-ess, Saturday, 26 July 2008 12:14 (seventeen years ago)
I think this kindof sums up my feelings about this thread real nicely. Cheers.
Sorry o-ess for any unintended hostility. A misunderstanding occurred upthread that I didn't unravel until later. No offense meant.
― Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Saturday, 26 July 2008 13:56 (seventeen years ago)
that's ok! I was mostly shocked, not offended.
― o-ess, Saturday, 26 July 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)
I love how guys let things go more often then girls.
But then again, I don't have enough girl friends to judge this on and one of my guy friends never lets anything go. jerk. Friends that don't drink at all are always the most wound up.
― CaptainLorax, Saturday, 26 July 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)
o-ess, that was my fault. i made a lame joke invoking yr screename that got lost in some drunken shuffle. sorry.

also, apologies to mookieproof, t0dd swiss, Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, dell, and anyone ended up reading my posts here.
i was bumming out on some shit which had nothing to do with any of you, and i'm sorry for being a complete asshole.

I sympathize to a point, or at least I know where this perception comes from -- I have worked in a couple of heavily female offices, and the "omg we all have to go out tonight and see the sex and the city movie" vibe can get overwhelming -- but when and if this is true, I don't think it's because those broads be havin' big mouths. Any office with an imbalance of males and females is going to make the minority feel unwelcome, and foster a kind of lowest-common-denominator sexual stereotype office culture. It's the same shit when there's too many dude. A frat house is every bit as bad as a hen house.

Thanx guys. Unfortunately, to quote Eddie Vedder, I'm still alive. But I feel your encouragement as I stagger over the line of shonky self-termination. Also I feel pukey and my kidneys hurt.

covers it really well.
there's really no need to make generalizations or trash the opposite sex in order to answer the question
OTM, who reads this thread title and thinks "great! i can whine about the opposite sex"?
― darraghmac, Sunday, 27 July 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)
That they understand how the opposite sex treat us.

I USED to like to borrow clothes. Now I am sorta chubby and my friends are not so close. In the past, it was just a constant revolving closet. I loved that. I loved getting dressed with my girlfriends.
Can I take a moment and just say that Prince "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is probably one of the sexiest songs ever.
― aimurchie, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 06:07 (seventeen years ago)
yeah getting dressed with my boyfriends isn't exactly the same.
