JAYMC on Jeopardy! TODAY! (SPOILERS Y'ALL)

An early warning: Beloved ILXOR jaymc has taped an episode (episodes?) of Jeopardy. The first (or only?) episode will air on JULY 26.

This is the thread where we congratulate him, ask him questions about his experience, and make xls jokes.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 19 March 2010 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

omg shutup

big (surm), Friday, 19 March 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

can someone post a countdown clock at the top of the thread?

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Friday, 19 March 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

to avoid redundancy:

I took the online test in January 2008 and was called for an in-person audition in June 2008. Was told that I'd be in the pool for 18 months, so when December came and went, I figured that was it. So I, too, took the online test again at the end of January (and also felt I didn't do as well as I had two years ago). But then about a month ago, I got a call and they said they wanted me to come out for a taping. Apparently it was the last week of taping for the season, so I think I probably just barely made it in.

Anyway: it's true. I can't reveal the outcome of the game(s), but I can talk about everything else.

that's awesome dude! guy i work with did the audition last summer iirc--he was dead set on getting on for a while.

Mr. Que, Friday, 19 March 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

Trebek: oddly entrancing. Between single and double Jeopardy, he posed for pictures with each contestant, and I got a thrill when he wrapped his arm around my side.

uh, where is that picture

jam master (jaymc), Friday, 19 March 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

that is totally awesome, dude, glad to see your incredible memory got you somewhere like that. my wife watches Jeopardy religiously and has taken the online test once or twice, i hope maybe she can get on there someday.

some dude, Friday, 19 March 2010 17:55 (fifteen years ago)

jaymc, what did you decide to tell the world for your random/stupid 'about me' tidbit for after the first commercial break?

or do you want that to remain a great secret until JULY 26?

I miss Jeopardy a lot. UK's quiz shows just aren't the same.

salsa sharkshavin (salsa shark), Friday, 19 March 2010 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

i have a real question: is the buzzer thing tricky? it seems like that's the hard part sometimes

Mr. Que, Friday, 19 March 2010 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, and did alex act like you were really weird based on your tidbit. seems to be his go-to reaction.

mizzell, Friday, 19 March 2010 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, Al, from what I hear, your chances of making it on are slightly better if you're a woman.

jam master (jaymc), Friday, 19 March 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

oh ohh, and IRL, do the questions actually make those random musical noises when they populate the screens at the start of each round, or is that added in afterwards in editing? do they even still do that anymore? I haven't seen an episode in ages.

salsa sharkshavin (salsa shark), Friday, 19 March 2010 17:58 (fifteen years ago)

and by 'questions' I mean 'answers', when they are displayed as money $$$ values ($200, $400, etc) (sorry for spamming thread, I am done now)

salsa sharkshavin (salsa shark), Friday, 19 March 2010 17:59 (fifteen years ago)

oh, i see. do not reveal, then!

was it stressful always remembering to hit the buzzer? did you practice buzzering at home?

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Friday, 19 March 2010 18:02 (fifteen years ago)

any music trivia?

rinse the lemonade (Jordan), Friday, 19 March 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

jaymc, what did you decide to tell the world for your random/stupid 'about me' tidbit for after the first commercial break?

You'll have to wait and see. :)

i have a real question: is the buzzer thing tricky? it seems like that's the hard part sometimes

Yeah, it's tricky. You have to wait until these lights around the game board light up before you can buzz in, and if you buzz in beforehand, you're locked out for a split second. Truth be told, I mostly ignored the lights and just buzzed in a beat after Alex finished the clue.

jam master (jaymc), Friday, 19 March 2010 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

oh ohh, and IRL, do the questions actually make those random musical noises when they populate the screens at the start of each round, or is that added in afterwards in editing?

Yes. I was actually surprised by how much of that stuff was actually live. The Daily Double noises, too. And all the graphics are in place on the monitors. After each round, though, they would have Alex re-record a clue if he mispronounced something or otherwise stumbled -- I assume that's then dubbed in during post.

jam master (jaymc), Friday, 19 March 2010 18:08 (fifteen years ago)

any music trivia?

There weren't any categories that were explicitly music-related, no.

jam master (jaymc), Friday, 19 March 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

If there was an Oscars category, we know it'll inspire Quiz Show II!

I was somewhat lacking in the nice-clothes-to-wear-on-national-television department, so I went to Banana Republic and bought a few things. I showed up in a slate gray shirt and black tie (no jacket).

question: did you bring any magic feathers with you or mementos so you know that when everyone's watching you on jeopardy, you have that special stolen spoon from ihop on your pocket or whatever?

Nah. I did wear nice underwear, though.

Yeah, it's tricky. You have to wait until these lights around the game board light up before you can buzz in, and if you buzz in beforehand, you're locked out for a split second. Truth be told, I mostly ignored the lights and just buzzed in a beat after Alex finished the clue.

While in the tryout process, I got to the point of competing using the buzzers & found them totally frustrating. I tend to be very impulsive when I am nervous & kept constantly getting locked out. I now understand (& sympathize with) the contestants who are repeatedly clicking the buzzer, to no avail. They clicked in too early & got locked out!

Yes, I'm sure lots of people here would do quite well on the show.

jam master (jaymc), Friday, 19 March 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)

well sure, but i'm reasonably smart and i have no ambition to be on jeopardy. (no jokes about my intelligence pls). just sayin that not every smart person wants to be on a quiz show.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Friday, 19 March 2010 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

I don't watch the show religiously, tho I have at various points in the past. I often wondered why there weren't more academics on the show, profs & such, who would likely have a fairly competitive edge w/ a good base of general knowledge. Is it just that many academics don't want sully their integrity by appearing on a game show (pretty silly imo) or are they not allowed to compete b/c they would have too much of an edge?

everybody on ilx u have dandruff (Pillbox), Friday, 19 March 2010 22:45 (fifteen years ago)

either that or they don't want the pressure/are afraid that they'll muff it under pressure? people have all kinds of reasons, i would guess.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Friday, 19 March 2010 22:46 (fifteen years ago)

They're definitely allowed to compete. One of the other contestants there on taping day (six episodes were taped on the day I was there) was an English professor.

things I expect from Jaymc's appearance:

- "personal anecdote" segment is about ILX bottle-opener thread
- spends entire Double Jeopardy segment doing irritating imitation of Connery on SNL "Celebrity Jeopardy" skits
- writes Final Jeopardy question with "??!?!11?" at the end
- holds buzzer above head when buzzing
- hums loudly along with Final Jeopardy music and plays air drums along with last seven notes
- pronounces it "Pootent Pootables," even after corrected multiple times

pootent pootables (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 July 2010 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

It worked fine for me.

Although I have to admit ... they tell you that you can't buzz in until the lights around the board light up, and some champions have said that it's better to slightly anticipate the lights coming on -- but when you're actually on the set and nervous about just getting something right, some of this nuanced strategy goes out the window, and you just started pounding the buzzer as soon as Alex stops talking.

kenan, Monday, 26 July 2010 23:41 (fifteen years ago)

We should try to get an ilx0r on Jeopardy every year. ENBB in 2011!

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 July 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

The top-scorer on each show keeps his or her winnings and returns on the next show, and non-winners receive consolation prizes. The current prizes are $2,000 for the second-place contestant and $1,000 for the third-place contestant. Since the show does not provide airfare or lodging for most contestants,[15] these cash consolation prizes alleviate the financial burden of appearing on the show.

oh, this is how it works? lame! i didn't know.

del griffith, Monday, 26 July 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)

Oh.

kenan, Monday, 26 July 2010 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 July 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

I am waiting for a .xls of questions that jaymc didn't know the answer to vs. questions he just got out-buzzered on.

That's hard to say. There were definitely a handful where I buzzed in as fast as I could but still got beaten to the punch. But there were also a few that I knew but just couldn't recall or figure out in time to buzz in. Like the Edith Bunker one: I don't think I even tried for it, but if it had been a Daily Double, I'd have gotten it right. But of course there were also questions I didn't know at all.

jaymc, Monday, 26 July 2010 23:45 (fifteen years ago)

I was kicking myself for not knowing the Edith Bunker one.

kenan, Monday, 26 July 2010 23:46 (fifteen years ago)

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 July 2010 23:47 (fifteen years ago)

jaymc, Monday, 26 July 2010 23:47 (fifteen years ago)

And so I see "Satan" and "book named after him," and in the heat of the moment, I recall the literary titles The Devil and Daniel Webster and The Book of Daniel, and well, there you have it. Even though if I thought about what the clue was actually asking, I might've known that wasn't right.

Nah, Alfred, I stayed and watched tomorrow's episode (which features WmC's daughter's English professor!) and then there was a lunch break, so I left the studio and ate maybe the best Thai food I've ever had at Jitlada. And then I went back to my brother's apartment and took a nap.

I was enraged to see they still have the Clue Crew, though it looks like they aren't making a big deal of calling them the Clue Crew.

Oh God, they had Jimmy from the Clue Crew warm up the audience, since announcer Johnny Gilbert had laryngitis or something, and he was a total cheeseball. Like he would ask audience members where they were from and then respond, "Wow, Seattle, Washington. What a great city. And a great place to be from. I've been to Seattle a few times now, and I've always had a great time. Seattle. That's really, really cool."

Congrats, nice job. You didn't get kicked off before Final Jeopardy which would be my biggest fear and disgrace.

How was the whole taping experience? How long were you in the studio? Did they edit anything out? What happens if someone was to curse by accident, do they start over? Does the winner change clothes and play another game right away, or had she played one right before yours? How different did it feel from the in-person audition?

Maybe someday I'll actually get on...

Thanks again, all.

How was the whole taping experience? How long were you in the studio? Did they edit anything out? What happens if someone was to curse by accident, do they start over? Does the winner change clothes and play another game right away, or had she played one right before yours? How different did it feel from the in-person audition?

I believe we got to the studio at 8 AM. Spent the first two hours in the green room, mostly filling out forms and going over rules and regulations. Also got makeup done. Then there was about 45 minutes of on-stage practice for all 13 contestants that appeared that day. (There were six episodes taped that day, so that meant returning champion Alison plus two new contestants for each episodes.)

Of the three episodes I was there to see (including my own), they didn't edit anything out on the contestant end. Nobody swore. However, Alex flubbed a couple of card readings and mispronounced the surname of actor Josh Duhamel, so at the end of the episode they had him go back and rerecord those.

The champion indeed returns to the green room and changes clothes for the next episode right away. (There's, I dunno, 15 minutes between each episode.) Our taping day was for last Friday's episode plus all of this week's episodes, so Alison was already a returning champion when we started and then she won another game before facing me. We were told to bring three outfits total -- I guess if you win more than three episodes in a row, they figure no one will notice that you're wearing the same outfit as on your first episode.

Definitely felt different from the in-person audition. The fact that you're in an actual TV studio can be kind of overwhelming. But the contestant coordinators were pretty great and made everyone feel at ease.

balls and adieu (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

haha no, I was all like SMASH THEM and cheering when Pamela went into the red, too! And I enjoyed that run where John was super-efficient and focused and controlling the board for a bit. Like I think I was on my feet for part of it. I think a complaint should be lodged, since Pamela's comeback was aided by getting some buzzer coaching during the break -- did JAYMC get a buzzer refresher? I call foul.

Allison's guess-face irked me, too, like: you are on your third day of Jeopardy. You don't need to telegraph to us that you're unsure of the answer just so you don't look stupid if you're wrong. And she was doing this with stuff she was clearly pretty sure of. I couldn't help comparing her fussiness to the precision of her haircut: I imagined her showing up at the salon with a ruler and double-checking the evenness of each individual hair.

all i would like to point out, in terms of a semi-spoiler, is that i got one amazingly specific-to-my-interests category ("FICTIONAL BANDS IN MOVIES") that couldn't have been written as better ilxor-bait (iirc there are like four lengthy threads in ilm about that very subject)

the running joke among my friends going in was that i was hoping for something along the lines of "THE 2003 NCAA TOURNAMENT," but that was pretty dang close

Surely it's aired on the west coast by now, so no... he didn't win. He had a brief killer run in Round 2, though, when there was a category about fictional bands in movies (if ever there was an ILX-type category, that's one).

F♯ A♯ (∞), Wednesday, 3 June 2015 22:22 (ten years ago)

hahaha!

it's funny how these things really come down to the particular mix of contestants in that particular episode. i was squirming in the audience when that shakespearean art category came up, thinking "damn, why couldn't that have waited til i'm on!" at lunch, nobody agreed with me, but several people, it turned out, had been internally SCREAMING for the canadian cities. such is the luck of jeopardy, w/ final jeopardy only the most dramatic case - - - one person's freebie category is another person's "just gonna put the buzzer down" moment.

Kate: I think you're probably right in general, but then there are people like me who know way more about the States than my own country. Culture and politics, anyway; I'm not that great on geography with either country.

I got Banff right. I might have got the Montreal Olympics one right, with a few extra seconds tacked on. None of the other three.

I got all but Montreal, but, like you said, with another few seconds tacked on coulda gotten it.

scientist/exotic dancer (suzy), Friday, 5 June 2015 16:12 (ten years ago)

i'm pretty sure that IRL/edited-out, he clarified that in some circles post-war might mean civil war. which makes sense.

i had really meant the "general public" thing to be self-deprecating, like us architecture people are such weirdos we care about this esoteric stuff. but tbh i was mostly just caught wrong-footed since this was not one of the pre-cleared anecdote questions i had expected! obviously it's a question one gets asked a lot, but it's also basically unanswerable as probably many of you can relate to from your own fields, mutatis mutandis.

rosenbergs actually came as much from ignorance as anything! felt like the question implied that the people involved got executed, and really couldn't remember enough about sacco and vanzetti to say whether they were executed or whether it would have made sense for there to be another defendant involved.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 5 June 2015 16:14 (ten years ago)

all i could think of, crowding all other paired names from my head, was the (accompliceless, iirc) leopold+loeb, then as soon as they revealed your answer i was like YES THAT'S IT

i had really meant the "general public" thing to be self-deprecating, like us architecture people are such weirdos we care about this esoteric stuff.

no that's how it came across! just meant that it was a well-timed bit of self-deprecation where others might have caved earlier or forgotten to cave at all.

difficult listening hour, Friday, 5 June 2015 16:16 (ten years ago)

Karl Malone, Friday, 5 June 2015 16:24 (ten years ago)

Great second round! The points shoot up fast.

I blanked on the name of the Rosenbergs. Best I could do was "Who is that spy couple what got executed?"

Nice game! That final question was hard.

Not accepting "Macademia" was a bit pedantic, imo, even if the question specifically mentioned 10 letters. It's a poorly constructed question if the answer can be wrong on that basis.

jmm, Saturday, 6 June 2015 00:18 (ten years ago)

*Macadamia

I feel like I've misspelled that before.

jmm, Saturday, 6 June 2015 00:21 (ten years ago)

well played game start to finish; my guess on final jeopardy woulda been "in art we trust" so i had some bastardized wrong idea in there. Tough final!
In any case, you are now a Jeopardy champion which means you can more or less win any argument anywhere. And you made about 26k on it too! Congrats congrats.

like a giraffe of nah (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 6 June 2015 04:11 (ten years ago)

thanks again, y'all!

i have no beef with the macadamia ruling - categories have always been fair game in that way, and none of the wordplay/crossword-clue style questions would be viable at all without that. plus, i should have just slowed down and counted the letters real quick - mac-A, da-mi, a..s. oh well! was maybe the first strong sign of the difficulties of coming back from a win, bewildered and shellshocked. of course it was also some stiff competition on the floor so i don't mean to discount that. just that my buzzer timing, and to-buzz-or-not-to-buzz instincts, really went out the window. it was still super fun, but there was suddenly an adrenaline/confusion thing that wasn't present before.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 6 June 2015 04:14 (ten years ago)

i guess i should have said social pariah instead of horrible person

Iago Galdston, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 20:30 (ten years ago)

holy shit this episode where trebek's voice is all re-recorded and overdubbed is weird as hell

gr8080, Tuesday, 28 July 2015 01:54 (ten years ago)

watching the episode now and hoping the smug monster who won all last week is finally defeated

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 28 July 2015 12:43 (ten years ago)

Yeah, I've heard Alex say "we don't penalize for spelling" re: Final Jeopardy many times, and the guy clearly knew the answer. WTF?

The New Gay Sadness (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 28 July 2015 13:51 (ten years ago)

iirc you can misspell but in this case he misspelled to the point of dropping a syllable and was disqualified for that reason

but u guys trebek's overdubbed voice

six months pass...

so i got the call to audition. how likely am i to actually be on?

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 03:34 (nine years ago)

er, okay nevermind

After the producers select their elite 3,000 they spend weeks reviewing dozens of people at a time, herding them into hotel conference rooms around the country and making them run a battery of tests: a written quiz of 50 Jeopardy! questions, a live round of Actual Jeopardy! with Actual Buzzers, and an interview Q&A. From this, they winnow the would-be contestants to the 400 people who actually appear on the show during the season—a .4% acceptance rate overall.

Actual Jeopardy!

always the most nailbiting round

le Histoire du Edgy Miley (difficult listening hour), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 06:17 (nine years ago)

i made it to the Actual (but not really) Jeopardy stage, i think I was exposed as a very casual viewer and not the hardcore type they wanted

Seriously Not Fucking Around Now Jeopardy!

Our Meals Are Hot And Fresh! (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 12:04 (nine years ago)

I'm almost certain that I would play Real Jeopardy! the way I play videogames. Click the buzzer a fraction of a second too late and mutter 'oh, fuck off' a little too loudly and that would be that.

Our Meals Are Hot And Fresh! (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 7 September 2016 12:07 (nine years ago)

Don't get discouraged by that percentage! Take the audition experience as a fun lark and story to tell on its own terms... You'll feel better about it if you don't make it, but also that kind of relaxed and having-fun attitude will come through in how you conduct yourself in Actual Jeopardy!, which may help you stand out as a contestant. I'm pretty sure this is what got me in to be honest.

"what is the Parthenon?"
"Ni."
"fuck off trebek."
"$100 in the swear jar for Clint."

Yeah the Final Jeopardy category choice was RIDICULOUS. In the best sense. And of course being me I was thinking "4AD? Merge?" And it turns out to be something I thought was easy, but clearly wasn't based on the other two.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 December 2017 15:06 (seven years ago)

haha i saw that one in the newspaper yesterday (you know how they run printed final jeopardies as an ad for the show) and got hung up on the pounds sterling aspect, thinking it had to be a clue. "Solid Gold Records???"

Holy shit Donna killed it

there is no way you were actually thinking the right answer was 4AD or Merge!

Did donna post under any other names? I’m an excited an ilxor triumphed but I’m not sure I ever interacted with her.

there is no way you were actually thinking the right answer was 4AD or Merge!

Probably before the reveal of the answer (question).

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 December 2017 00:46 (seven years ago)

I remember seeing her name around these parts, but tbh the only times I've ever interacted with her are in our little ilxor Neko Atsume fb group.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 December 2017 00:47 (seven years ago)

Maybe she’ll come back now

She was posting as Morley Timmons - but it's been a while.

also NB that we won't have watched it with her until 8pm Pacific time, when it airs.

really strange betting in final jeopardy on donna's xmas day appearance!

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 27 December 2017 02:57 (seven years ago)

nah, i get it. if the other gal had beet just enough to surpass donna's total, then donna hedges by outbetting her slightly.

Men's Scarehouse - "You're gonna like the way you're shook." (m bison), Wednesday, 27 December 2017 14:47 (seven years ago)

it's a betting strategy that works only if everyone gets that question right though.

that first day from donna was massive; great game!

three years pass...

i took the test online tonight kind of on a whim, i know i got at least half of them right, but i think 35 out of 50 is the cutoff so idk abt that. im gonna forgot about this for a few months then watch a grip of episodes on netflix again and say "hey maybe i should take the jeopardy test."

class project pat (m bison), Monday, 22 March 2021 01:46 (four years ago)

how long does the test take?

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 22 March 2021 01:50 (four years ago)

sorry, i'm not sure why i asked that. what is about 50 questions x about 5-10 seconds each?

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 22 March 2021 01:51 (four years ago)

correct. you have control of the board.

class project pat (m bison), Monday, 22 March 2021 02:01 (four years ago)

(it may have been 15 seconds per question, i just went into a fugue state and tried pretyping "what is" before i read each clue)

class project pat (m bison), Monday, 22 March 2021 02:04 (four years ago)

i'm about 4 beers in, have been high since the obama administration. it's time for me to take the test

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 22 March 2021 02:09 (four years ago)

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Monday, 22 March 2021 02:18 (four years ago)

i got 13 of 30 on the practice test.
