Rolling Rock if I'm dieting. Sam Adams BL or Sierra Nevada PA otherwise.
misc. Belgians or anything that costs more than $11-12 for a six-pack.
Negra Modelo
Anything by Dogfish Head. I really like most of what I've tried, so I dunno why I hardly ever buy it.
After thinking on this for a minute, I couldn't come up w. anything. I think I mix it up w/ such frequency that this does not happen much these days.
In the past, Bell's Oberon springs to mind. This was SOOO good back in the 90s & steadily declined in quality as production/distribution increased. It is still pretty good, but there are a lot of similar things I like better & it took me a long time to realize that. So maybe it is not that its quality was alloyed over the years, but that my tastes were honed & diversified? Impossible to tell, really.
Red Dog. Who the fuck buys Red Dog.
Also, Honey Brown. Now, Honey Brown is OK & all, but it used to be that it cost about as much as any given major US domestic & then it disappeared for a while & returned remarketed w/ different packaging & prices marked up to premium rates, tho the beer itself tastes exactly the same as I remember it. So Honey Brown made some suckers out of somebody, I guess.

a. which beer do you buy when you go to the store and aren't feeling particularly inspired by any of the choices? (this might be referred to as one's default beer)Whatever's on sale in the Pale Ale/IPA range--in the bay area that's usually Sierra Nevada.
b. which beer do you buy makes you feel like you're spoiling yourself?Lost Coast Great White, Deschutes Green Lakes, today it's Lagunitas Maximus IPA.
c. which beer have you been buying most frequently?Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA has been on sale 3 weeks in a row. That's been good, but I've moved on.
d. which beer do you buy that you feel like you don't buy enough?Anything limited edition
e. which beer do you buy that you feel like you buy too often?Sierra Nevada products.
f. which beer do you see at the store that makes you think "what kind of disgusting savages buy that?"Whatever comes in those twist top aluminum bottles I saw on tv recently. I was truly nauseated. I'm not above cheapo beer though--my years in Chicago would have been unbearable without Old Style at 30 cans for 11 bucks.

Usually get a case of cheap lager, mostly Carlsberg, sometimes Carling, depending on what happens to be on offer that week. It's good for drinking around the house because it's cheap and not very strong.
Bottles of real ale or porter. Or even just cans of "premium" lager. Usually Kronenbourg 1664 or some Polish lager like Lech or Zywiec at the moment.
Carlsberg.
Anything other than Carlsberg.
I'm fairly unfussy when it comes to beer. Supermarket value lager I guess, I can't understand why someone would buy that, it's only 2% and tastes disgusting. If you just want to get drunk it doesn't even work out that good value, just get some Tennents Super or something.
― Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:35 (fifteen years ago)
Guinness or Pride in a pub; Holsten Pils in the offy. Newcastle Brown in first two weeks of the month.
Any top shelf, rich dark ale that costs about £2 a pint from the supermarket and comes in an ornamental bottle.
Probably Pils tbh. It's not nice enough that I particularly want to drink a lot of it but as lagers go, it's one of the few that's not actively offensive.
I mix it up pretty well, but not enough porters.

Beck's Vier. Also 1664 tbh - no offence CP.

a. Becksb. Pietra - fantastic chestnut beer from Corsica. only Waitrose seem to stock it. Sierra Nevada or dark beers in general because of the price in pubs.c. Becks (idk why it's pretty boring)d. Pietra, Anchor Steam, pale ales, Modelo Negra (not available enough)e. Becks (argh)f. alcohol-free
― mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 11:22 (fifteen years ago)
Holsten, 6 for £5 mainstay
Leffe, Erdinger
c. which beer have you been buying most frequently?Okocim, Zywiec, Budvar
d. which beer do you buy that you feel like you don't buy enough?Paulaner, because I don't see it very often
e. which beer do you buy that you feel like you buy too often?Zywiec - this is actually not a very good midweek beer because it gets you fucked out of your mind quite fast
Carling is just absolute fucking piss, Becks isn't terrible but it is pointless and something of an embarrassment to its proud Teutonic heritage imo
― MPx4A, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 11:23 (fifteen years ago)

Guinness in draft cans, Goose Island Honkers Ale since it's everywhere, JK Scrumpy's Hard Cider
Unibroue Éphémère, Vuuve, Grand Cru, hard cider other than JK Scrumpy's/Magners, Monk's Cafe Flemish Sour Ale
Goose Island's Belgian clones Matilda and Sophia
Vuuve, different cider, Monk's since they're not available at conveniently located grocery stores.
Dogfish Head IPAs. Jeff loves them, but I'm not as excited about them.
Any beer that's main selling point is its lack of calories. Life is for living, goddammit.
And since I'm sharing my personal beer failings on this thread anyway (see: chelada love above), I'll go ahead and say that I am not adverse to drinking a very cold Bud Light Lime on a hot day. After about three they start to make me feel a little queasy, though.

if I gave you 10 mugs - 5 mugs w/ canned guinness and 5 mugs of tap, I really doubt you'd be able to guess 10/10 and not just cause you'd be drunk

Guinness is just straight fucking disgusting irregardlessly, obviously
guinness in dublin tastes more like guinness elsewhere than guinness in a can tastes like guinness on tap. I am gonna start touring the world w/ this challenge.
― iatee, Tuesday, 30 March 2010 14:14 (fifteen years ago)
but maybe the dublin people will claim that if I bring guinness from elsewhere into dublin, the character of the city magically transforms the beer into magic dublin guinness instead of regular guinness.

i don't think i've had guinness in dublin, but i've had plenty of it in galway and the surrounding area. irish and american guinness taste the same in theory imo but american bars are far, far more likely to have dirty tap lines, inept pours, and other things that contribute to a less-than-fresh pint.

this is perfectly reasonable, if splitting hairs a bit. In keeping w/ long-standing tradition, Guinness sends out its best barrels to certain Dublin pubs & the only real way of knowing which pubs those are is to count how many old men go to drink there every day. Now this sounds a little silly & kinda like you know an urban legend or something. I thought so too until I found one such pub & did the old Pepsi challenge b/w it & another pub down the street.
this is otm

Usually Trader Joe's Jumping Cow or Fat Weasel - good value for $5.50/6-pack.
Typical answer: any 750 ml bottle, Belgians or US craft beers. Don't really have a goto beer for this, there's always new ones to try.
For the past 6 weeks, Gordon Biersch Maarzen, which has been on sale for $6.50. Excellent value for that, I'm stocking up (the sale ends today).
Non-IPA / Belgian / Porter type good beers. I should be trying more Farmhouse Ales, craft Lagers, etc.
Nothing really, though I'm always in search of a cheap canned beer, so I try some odd stuff. Latest is Steel Kettle Whistle, $6/12-pack at Fresh and Easy. Drinkable, but I think I prefer Red Oval.
Fruity beers (apricot, blueberry, banana, etc). I'll admit to liking some of these on the first few tastes, but I never want to continue to a second bottle. Also the high-alcohol crap like Steel Reserve.
