sorry to be a dick. it moves fast, but the US POLITICS threads had some laffs about it this morning.

goole, Monday, 29 March 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

i think this warrants it's own page.

I have a distant cousin who went crazy and born again a few years ago and reconnected with on facebook. From time to time she posts these rabid insane youtube videos, always screaming "WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! THIS IS HAPPENING!!! WAKE UP!!!" I think I managed about 30 seconds of one of them, but I have a feeling they're related to this crap.

akm, Monday, 29 March 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

i did a search and got nothing,
goole- could you please link to the previous discussion?

"We believe that one day, as prophecy says, there will be an Anti-Christ. All Christians must know this and prepare, just as Christ commanded," the group's Web site said. "Jesus wanted us to be ready to defend ourselves using the sword and stay alive using equipment."

i read "blood and politics" by leonard zeskind which was half about these kinds of people but i don't remember this specific group mentioned

harbl, Monday, 29 March 2010 21:49 (fifteen years ago)

what is it with midwesterners starting bat-shit crazy militant groups? and then like "christian" fanatics who are violent? that seems to me directly contradictory

and these people were attacking police officers? wtf?
"According to investigators, the Hutaree view local, state, and federal law enforcement personnel as a "brotherhood" and an enemy, and planned to attack them as part of an armed struggle against the U.S. government."

Michigan can be a weird place, and western michigan even more so. Grand Rapids is home to all sort of rich rightwing Christianist nutters. Blackwater, now Xe(for chi-epsilon) is out of that area, too.

The Klan is now located in mid-michigan, between Ann Arbor and Flint and E. Lansing, iirc.

i have a facebook friend from high school who seems borderline about to join one of these groups. he has that perfect combination of ignorance, former military experience, hatred of the government, failure to control his big mouth, and inability to write a sentence without making at least 2 hilarious spelling mistakes. he's actually pretty offensive in general (complained about MLK day?) but i am keeping him around so that i know if he goes totally batshit.

i'm always bemused by the reading of "prophecy" by militant groups such as this. revelations does indeed contain the prophecy of a coming anti-christ but hey! where's the prophecy that a brave uprising will defeat the anti-christ? nowhere! because the christians are meant to suffer unspeakable torments before the new jerusalem! lolz

this is an extremely marginal group of people in the broad swathe of american life. it's basically a blip, no matter how interesting it is. what the hutaree "mean" could be an interesting question but i'll be damned if i want to read any of the analyses, which are guaranteed to have their conclusions pre-ordained.

what is important is the number of people who agree in some measure with them, or at least will agree that they are being demonized unfairly, or that they have a point buried in there, etc. it's analogous to the IRS-suicide-bomber guy: a lot of people were willing to allow that he was crazy, but only by saying that the forces that drove him crazy were very real and dangerous

that said, there is a political value to seeing these guys on the news (or as the butt of jokes) for a while. because, if you are hyper christian, love guns and hate "the government" in whatever sense, sorry, the Hutaree ARE on your team, in kind and degree, and yes you have some 'splainin to do.

but again, this is a country of 300 million people so a dozen-odd people super committed to a totally whacked out set of ideas is both inevitable and not even a rounding error, basically.

i think what's interesting about hutaree and waco and mcveigh is that this type of thing keeps happening. what is going on with these people that they will take guns and bombs and direct them on some authority figures and some innocent people? i think i might include the kids of columbine in this confusion i have as well. but atleast in their case they were teenagers who everyone knows are batshit crazy. these adults who do this kind of thing are they just adolescents who never grew out of their desire to play "guns" and run around acting like soldiers? are they ne'er-do-wells who just bottle up all of their frustrations and failures only to erupt in plots to kill?

what is going on with these people that they will take guns and bombs and direct them on some authority figures and some innocent people?

because they believe what they say they believe?

i think i might include the kids of columbine in this confusion i have as well. but atleast in their case they were teenagers who everyone knows are batshit crazy.

yeah well don't do that then, instead of adding to the confusion! "violence on the innocent" is too broad a category; just about anything can be put under that heading. the point is the people inside don't consider their victims to be innocent.

these adults who do this kind of thing are they just adolescents who never grew out of their desire to play "guns" and run around acting like soldiers? are they ne'er-do-wells who just bottle up all of their frustrations and failures only to erupt in plots to kill?

like i said, the very very very tiny number of people who get involved in this stuff leads me to answer: who cares? their psychology is insane to me, but it's also inevitable. there really isn't anything you can do about it. or, more to the point, all we can do as a society is exactly what we did do: keep track of them, make sure law enforcement is up on their activities, and get them as soon as they plan to do something very illegal but before they hurt anyone.

i think the fact that this movement came to prominence in the 90's (when my brain started turning on) is why i have a fascination with it. wiki says in the 90s membership in these militias is 20-60k and if we divide that by 3mil that's 2%. granted most of these militia dudes are just ex-military with beefs that the government is a front for big business, but alot of these articles quote stats of multiple hundred % increase of militia (i can't remember if it was groups or members) splc has an article about it

Similar factors have driven the number of race-based hate groups, as distinct from Patriot groups, from 602 in 2000 to 926 in 2008, according to research by the Southern Poverty Law Center."

"The current political environment is awash with seemingly absurd but nonetheless influential conspiracy theories, hyperbolic claims and demonized targets," Berlet concluded. "And this creates a milieu where violence is a likely outcome."

i'm on record on this thread saying the hutaree, specifically, are no big deal, but yeah, far-right craziness is definitely happening right now.

i really hope we can get through the summer, and the next several years, without anyone getting killed. the clinton years suggest otherwise.

what a shocker; people who feel alienated when people who look like them are in power feel even more alienated when people who don't look like them are in power

My brother & SIL live in Livonia. SIL's mom is big time into local Republican politics, SIL is working on the campaign for the GOP candidate(who happens to be one of the state AG's wanting to sure over health care).

LOL, have only been to Detroit once in my life, for a week in the '80s, and I still knew Livonia snark would ohsnap him (my host J was from Northville and was escaping people like that, going to UN etc). The BIL reprogramming also took in my reaction to him complaining about perceived gay lechery: somehow it was so much worse that these men were perving on unavailable teenage boys; I was like 'welcome to what teenage girls experience daily all over the world, and if we object we're frigid lesbians or something - now get the fuck over it.'

this movement came to prominence in the 90's

yeah. when the right-wing can't paint a democratic president as weak and ineffectual (carter), they veer toward a "totalitarian gov't taking away our rights" narrative (clinton, obama).

unless this is an april fools joke by the talking points memo? either way this is one of the funniest things i've ever seen in my life

y'know, sadly, that guy running into the scene with the duck-head sadly reminded me of the university-of-miami's mascott -- sebastian the ibis -- running out of the tunnel before football games.

we need a new mascot.

i just can't get over how hilarious this is
also if some of the dudes i was friends with in high school put together an equally creepy/wrong/ridiculous movie, i wouldn't be a bit surprised. i mean you are stuck in rural nowhere, this is the kind of stuff that goes on. it's weird out there in the heartland.

Sounded like Prodigy at the end, though I can totally imagine these twits being big Rammstein fans, too. Btw, we're been talking a lot about Hutaree for the past few days on the thread below, starting with the post I've permalinked to -- particularly their apparent connection with an anti-Semitic Bethlehem, PA hard rock band called Poker Face:

The Michigan Militia was featured in "Bowling For Columbine"; those are the people currently distancing themselves as much as possible from Hutaree.

The ruling was hailed by defense lawyers as a major victory for free speech. They had long argued that the defendants never had any real plans to harm anyone and were merely engaged in tough talk, a protected First Amendment right.
