looking at a venue tonight.

this shit is expensive yo

Matt Daemon (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah, maybe I should have warned you about that

the first few tricks are pretty soul-shattering but just keep your eyes closed and repeat "the wedding day will be worth it" to yourself until it's over

it means "EMOTIONAL"! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

if you're creative, you can find an affordable venue that is also cool. the area where i would recommend not trying to scrimp is catering - those people do way more than just serve food, they're like the point people at the venue, set up tables and chairs, decorate, etc.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

i.e. the venue for our wedding was technically a photography studio but they rent it out on weekends for events, basically a huge awesome open space with windows all around, views of downtown, hardwood floors, etc., and much cheaper than an OFFICIAL WEDDING VENUE

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

just my 2 cents

Re the caterers I mean

no more springs no more summers no more falls (sunny successor), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

depending on the size of the wedding, the amount you pay on the stuff you need to bring in (tables, chairs, linens, silverware) can obliterate what you are saving

it means "EMOTIONAL"! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

First, congratulations. Very great news. Henry must be thrilled.

Second, remember the positive vibe and warm feelings you got when you put the ring on her finger. Those must carry you through the wedding planning process.

Third, I echo the statements immediately above - things you cannot scrimp on are food and booze. And, based on the list of responders you have here, I am sure you could put together a good-to-legendary playlist for y'all's nuptials. We had a DJ, and it was great. A band is a luxury, if you can afford it. There is no need to go into the horrible world of "wedding space".

that's true, we only has about 60-65 people at our wedding, and the caterers also supplied the tables, chairs, linens, etc., which may be behind my thought that paying for good caterers is important. this was also a fairly casual wedding. if you're having a really big or really traditional wedding, my advice may not apply.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:06 (fifteen years ago)

We really wanted to go that route (there were two venues that had significance to us, one being on campus and the other being a function room at Symphony Hall) but the catering costs for bringing in everything necessary to actually seat/serve the approx. 175 ppl expected at the wedding was like triple what we ended up paying by going to a hotel (which also btw gave us a deal on the place where we stayed for our honeymoon).

it means "EMOTIONAL"! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

what's the usual attendance at a US wedding? was 175 small, medium or large HI DERE

scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

Mine was around 100, which I've found to be about the median. My older brother's was somewhere in the neighborhood of 300, if I remember correctly, and I was mistaken for him several times.

I've also been to very small weddings, which were nice and intimate, but you better get along with close to everyone there, or it may not be very fun.

Clerk all KNOWIN (B.L.A.M.), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

Depending on who you talk to, 175 is medium-to-large. One of my friends had 350 ppl at his wedding, which I thought was just insane.

it means "EMOTIONAL"! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

first off: congratulations! Second: first venue I looked at was what I thought was a reasonable $1200 (I'm in Toronto) - then I found out the approved caterer would charge $20,000 for 150 people! Sigh. Now we're looking at legions.. Much cheaper, still potentially nice... :(

wasting time and money trying to change the weather (Laurel), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

I completely understand why people do this, but I personally am 100% AGAINST potluck weddings. I wasn't going to ask ppl who have traveled thousands of miles and were staying in hotels to attend my wedding to also bring food for 10 ppl with them.

it means "EMOTIONAL"! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:52 (fifteen years ago)

Well, no; for one thing, your chances of food poisoning must skyrocket.

wasting time and money trying to change the weather (Laurel), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

i'd say 300+ is maybe the norm over here, but then i have like 60 first cousins.

scrappy dyaoo (darraghmac), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 17:56 (fifteen years ago)

oh i just realized i promised to tell the whole story and then never delivered.

so i pick up the ring (its dope btw, thanks to my impeccable taste) on friday and sneak home in the afternoon to hide a bottle of growed-up champagne behind all the veggies in the fridge crisper, because i am a classy dude. call k at work and ask her if we have anything planned for the night because i am tired or rundown or whatever, and she says no, so all systems are go right?

10 minutes before i leave work, i get a call from K saying "Great news! You know that dude that my brother knows with the sewer camera? he can come over tonight and check our sewer line!"

yay

so im thinking to myself "ok how the fuck do i manage to surreptitiously steal a bottle of champagne back out of the fridge and stow it somewhere so she cant find it, and what if she decides 'tonight is a great night for salad' and omg wtf aggggh." decide to just hope for the best and head home, get this stupid camera thing done and then get to the proposal business.

when i arrive there is some monstrous smoke belching diesel engine trailer thing attached to a work van, and hoses going in and out of my house and around the yard and this dude and ks brother adjusting dials and knobs and whatever. turns out that there are root masses in out sewer line (which happens all the time, and matt (camera dude) just so happens to be on call for his job w/ some industrial service company so LUCKY ME hes just going to go ahead and clean it out for us with this power washer sewer domninating thing. i run inside and observe that K is not eating a salad, think about kamikaze run on the fridge and making a break for it but decide against it. out of obligation, go down into the basement in the hopes that i can speed this process up.

4 HOURS PASS

i am now completely freaking out, ive got a $$$$ ring in my pocket and i have now ducked into the bathroom and put it in a ziplock bag to avoid the "oh hey look heres a ring, sorry about all the shit on it." possibilities. matt is, infuriatingly, some sort of OCD sewer completist and will not rest until the job is done. finally he finishes, or we run out of water, or whatever, i go upstairs and do like some sort of speed shower and come downstairs to K lounging on the couch (still happily salad free) and her brother, who has gotten roped into doing tons of assistant shit wrt sewer cop slash and burn program against his will sitting in a chair. K pulls me aside and suggests that we buy him dinner for all his hard work. i resist throwing a wad of cash at him and shoving him out the door, and we get ready to go. at the last minute, K says "im sorry guys, im just exhausted, why dont you go ahead and get food while i just hang out here and watch tv", which is totally acceptable and fine but i have A RING IN MY POCKET AND STEALTH CHAMPAGNE AND SHIT GODDAMN ok fine off we go.

i eat efficiently and quickly, we down margaritas, i take out my phone and check the time about every thirty seconds. eventually my crazed wild-eyed not talking at all or making not really any sense in the rare moments of conversation gets the best of him and i drive him home.

its 12:30. when i arrive i am greeted by the smell of chicken breast unaccompanied by any sort of dressing sign so we appear to be all good. K is watching reruns of the biggest loser on demand, and i fetch her and say something brilliant like "uh i have a surprise for you and um its in the vegetable crisper" which gets the expected baffled reaction, she comes back into the room and i drop to a knee and pop the question after telling her that i thought about doing it in all sorts of fancy places but fuck it (yes i did incorporate "but fuck it!" into my marriage proposal because i am what i am) this is our house and we love it so where better. and she says yes while henry looks on approvingly.

then we blast music and drink until 4, and i get up the next morning in blinding hungover pain and work for 7 hours while idiots play out of tune guitars at high volumes.

pretty much the perfect engagement story for me imo.

xposts galore

greatest proposal story ever. Hope your sewer is all better!

if you can top my wedding ceremony (a Justice o' Peace office in Reno, officiated by a gentleman with two hearing aids who sounds exactly like Peter Cook in the Princess Bride, room crammed with family/friends all staring at walls and ceilings trying not to lose their shit from laughing at lovely gentleman)... then you will be 100% win. But you kind of already are, what with Henry and that proposal and shiny new fiancee etc.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

one big bonus for us is that one of our close friends is an events planner by trade so in exchange for not being put in her 11th wedding party of the past 2 years (no exaggeration) she is going to be our point person on deciphering all this crap and negotiating w/venues.

also i know this guy with some sound equipment that might come in handy, just saying. will def be hiring dj iPod to also save some $$$, plus that way it is possible that if i get drunk enough beforehand K will do her father daughter dance to ICP's "Miracles"

my favorite moment along those lines was when Macy's accidentally deleted our registry after half of the items on it had been purchased; fortunately, we had a print-out of what we'd registered for, but no record of what people had actually bought, so we ended up with doubles of practically everything

my pro-tip is splash out on the photog - for me, the whole wedding experience was a stressful blur, but at the end of the day we had these really lovely photos that captured our real happiness at being together.

we are in nz right now on our honeymoon - highly recommend it if you're looking for a honeymoon destination!

just1n3, Thursday, 6 May 2010 07:17 (fifteen years ago)

This thing I wrote about our wedding;

On April 24th 2010 we got married. This is a group for pictures of our wedding!

After nearly 9 years together, the last 2 & 1/2 of that living in sin and sharing a mortgage, we finally got married.

As with everything else in our relationship, we took things casually and did it our way; the dress was from Etsy, I wore jeans, we had a casual barbecue for lunch, no one wrote a proper speech, I tightly controlled the music, Emma made (and I iced) 5 dozen cupcakes because neither of us like wedding cake, Matt & Jim fell over drunk, and we tried to find a way to get Cosmo to be a ring bearer. It was perfect.

Bar rings and clothes, we did the whole thing for a smidgeon over a thousand pounds; the last thing we wanted was for it to be a competitive or stressful wedding. Our philosophy was: If you plan everything, you spend the day wondering if things are going to plan, rather than enjoying yourself. So we planned barely anything. (We only checked what happened at the service on the Monday before!)

Apologies to friends and relatives both near and far who we didn't invite; it's not that we don't love you or didn't want you there, it's that, frankly, we couldn't afford to invite any more people and trying for anything bigger would have made it into a day that we didn't really want. We would both have felt dreadful dragging people to our little corner of the South West and then spending barely any time with you because we were stretched too thin. Also, I'd have killed someone if I'd had to ice any more bloody cupcakes. We promise we'll see you as soon as we can though; now we're married we're resolving to be more sociable!

The service was 150 yards from our front door, the barbecue and party about 600 yards. We both laughed through the service because it's better than crying. We sat in a pub garden all afternoon in the sunshine drinking wine with our closest friends and siblings. I did the Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) dance. Emma looked absolutely beautiful. We both grinned all day. All the cupcakes got eaten and we walked home at half past midnight in the first pattering of (very, very) light rain to fall in Exeter after 17 days of unbroken sunshine. It was perfect.

The volcanic ash now appears to have cleared and we look as though we'll be able to fly to New York on Thursday as planned (the only thing we did plan). Between now and then we're relaxing and trying to figure out how being married is any different to just being in love. (It isn't.) (Except we both wear rings.)

We have been absolutely taken aback by the generosity and kindness of everyone who had anything to do with our wedding; from the staff at the City Gate and Larkbeare House, to our parents and families, and everyone who spent time with us or wished us well. We didn't ask for gifts because after 9 years it seemed cheeky, but we've been gobsmacked. People go loopy for weddings. It's beautiful. We just thought we were signing a bit of paper and going down the pub.

So thank you, everyone who was involved, in any way at all. Our wedding day was amazing, and you helped make it that way. We're thinking of getting an annulment so we can do it all again. (Joke!)

Particular thanks to Jack, who worked through the day with a cold to help us capture these amazing photographs, despite being an animator not a photographer. Maybe we should set up business doing this "professionally". I'll do the shouting. And I'm sorry about Jim. He likes a party.

Oh, yeah, one last thing. The playlist; it was cool as.

btw SM yer wedding sounds awesome! looking forward to peeps falling over drunk at mine

Samhain 69 (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 May 2010 23:47 (fifteen years ago)

clinching things about our venue:

1. they do all the set up and clean up, provide all the linens/silverwear/barware/tables/chairs/table settings/etc.
2. cheapest thing we found that didnt suck
3. the only venue in STPL that allows you to bring in yer own booze! this is going to save $$$$$ and let us do a full open bar all night
4. its fucking GORGEOUS
5. wholly owned and operated by a non-profit and all proceeds go towards giving college scholarships to underprivileged woman students - this just floored me, so happy. if im going to shovel a shitload of money into someone elses pockets, this is the best way i could do so.

My brother & his wife had four months between their engagement & wedding – you should be fine.

no more springs no more summers no more falls (sunny successor), Sunday, 16 May 2010 18:04 (fifteen years ago)

Whether you can get done in a year depends solely on how elaborate you want it to be and how much you can delegate to others. For a modest garden-variety wedding a year should be very much adequate. My wife and I decided to marry in July and wed in November. We did almost everything ourselves, including pay for it, which had the desirable effect of keeping it pretty simple.

The whole process requires a lo-o-o-ng series of decisions. Make as many decisions as you can, as early as you can. Then you know what you are dealing with and can settle down to just doing it.

Aimless, Sunday, 16 May 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

Choosing the venue is one of the biggest decisions so now you've got that sorted you've got loads of time (looks great, btw!).

Not the real Village People, Sunday, 16 May 2010 19:01 (fifteen years ago)

P.S. The whole affair cost us about $1000 back in 1984. The single biggest expense was to buy me a suit so I wouldn't loook like a hobo. Seconod biggest expense was champagne.

Aimless, Sunday, 16 May 2010 19:02 (fifteen years ago)

I just went to my sister's wedding Saturday and can I say, don't make the celebration last from 10 a.m. to 9.m. contiguously, esp. if you are against serving alcohol?

This is four-dimensional art; the 4th dimension is incredibly powerful. (Abbott), Monday, 17 May 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)

okay that is abuse

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 May 2010 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

I wasn't even allowed to go to the actual wedding (which was in the temple) but they made me & my husband & youngest brother sit outside the temple the whole time, and just wait for them. We weren't even allowed to do that at home.

This is four-dimensional art; the 4th dimension is incredibly powerful. (Abbott), Monday, 17 May 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

you've got the venue that's like 70 percent of it. honestly too, it's your day, as long as ppl eat and have the option of drinking and there is some kinda music you will be FINE

You just go down to the pony corral and pick out the ones you want, kinda like picking out your lobster at a ritzy seafood place. I'd go for the sedater ones. Easier to load.

Buffalo wings.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 17:48 (fifteen years ago)

that doesn't even make sense, these are PONIES

Have a slice of wine! (HI DERE), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 17:49 (fifteen years ago)

Why are you resistant to the idea of draping a bunch of ponies in buffalo wings?

why are you tearing the wings off of poor, defenseless buffalo?

you are a CRUEL man

I've been remiss for, like, 2 weeks apparently and am just catching up on all this now. Loved the story, especially worrying that K was going to go eat some salad. Congrats on finding a venue, yes you should have plenty of time before next May, but ugh wedding planning - just get it all done and out of the way. (I loved my wedding, hated planning it, it was really not my thing. My sister had about 500 guests at her wedding, though, so I probably shouldn't complain... that would have been even crazier...)

I dunno how to actually do or say this given how incongruous it might seem, plus the fact I've not bought a physical ring or owt, but...me too, basically.

(You know when you're curled up in bed,and you get to talking...sometimes you talk and it gets dangerous. Sometimes you talk and end up discovering you want the same thing, and if you can fly around the world for love you can sure agree to commit your life.)
