actually what i mean is that this show is great yet indefensible
What makes this show great is the very thing that makes it indefensible!
― Mordy, Monday, 17 May 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)
A much more satisfying Arrested Development reunion than Sit Down Shut Up, that's for damn sure.
Was anyone else kind of disappointed they didn't get more mileage out of Chris Parnell, though?

was kind of amazed at how funny i thought the bomb-defusing scene on the blimp in the first season was. it's really drawn out in a way i didn't really expect from FLASHY CYNICAL QUICK-CUTTING CARTOON SHOW #243 (not that this show isn't just fine at being that too, when it is). plus it is Actually Suspenseful!
so yeah excited for this, also it is nifty-looking.

when i watch this show i get the same feeling i do when i watch rob dyrdek's fantasy factory, where i am constantly expecting the next joke to be the one where to make me realize what a bad show it is. but i never do.

lol @ this
We did have to tweak the season opener. The girl was originally 14 because I did a bunch of Wikipedia research and found out that that is the age of consent in Germany. They said they didn’t care where it was the age of consent, it wasn’t the age of consent on FX. The only other one was Archer threw an infant, really a newborn, to disarm a villain. They said that was going a little too far. The baby was going to slam into the guy’s chest, which I’m sure is terrible for a baby.

i feel like with heavily dialogue-driven comedies, especially these animated adult swim-type shows, the rhythm of the dialogue is really important. and i really like the rhythms of Home Movies or Venture Bros, but the rhythm of the dialogue on these Adam Reed shows is really exhausting and irritating to me. now and then they do make me laugh really hard, but half the time i'm just tuning out or feeling actively annoyed by the way the characters are hectoring each other.

a show starring H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Chris Parnell and Judy Greer has a right to be way better than this imo
― absolutely steen hooses (some dude), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:44 (fourteen years ago)
it's pretty funny. one of the better animated shows currently running (tho maybe not as good as venture bros, at least as good as bob's burgers)
― Mordy, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:50 (fourteen years ago)
it's funny, and it's been growing on me this season because my wife really likes it, but Bob's Burgers is much more my speed. even Sealab i dug more (although Frisky Dingo was the worst shit ever).
― absolutely steen hooses (some dude), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)
i don't hate frisky dingo, and my brother swears by it (he actually thinks it's funnier than archer). sealab was good when it was really weird (the WHAT episode in particular was a highlight). the best of these imho of recent memory are venture bros, the last season of metalocolypse, moral orel. frankenhole isn't as good as moral orel which is really a special show. so brilliant. um -- maybe we should poll all these. some big american animation of the last eight years poll?
― Mordy, Tuesday, 12 April 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)
Actually, I was thinking that a full old-style ILX animation poll could be fun too.

― reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Tuesday, 12 April 2011 19:35 (fourteen years ago)
Frisky Dingo is great, Frankenhole is great, Archer is great, Moral Orel is great in certain dosages, Venture Brothers is all time, Metalocalypse is great, Home Movies is all time, Sealab is great, Bob's Burgers is bleh.

Returns tonight! Hilarious interview with Aisha Tyler over at The AV Club.
AVC: Were you getting it from both sides, feeling uncomfortable being the black kid at school and being the private-school kid at home? AT: Oh yeah. You’re a perceptive fellow. I lived, for a good amount of time, in a black neighborhood and went to a white school. And at the school, I was this weird black kid who wasn’t even an archetypical black kid, you know what I mean? My family’s vegetarian. AVC: So you can’t even be like, “I’m gonna teach you all about rap music”? AT: No. “Hey, let’s breakdance! Time for the Electric Boogaloo 2 slide!” No, there was none of that. I was like, “I can teach you guys about tofu.” Which no one wants to learn about, by the way. And for all you vegetarian parents out there who think you’re doing your kid a favor: You’re not. You’re not doing your kids any favors. You’re just creating a terrible social circle, just a vacuum around them where no one wants to talk to them. ’Cause one of the big ways kids socialize is they trade, right? They trade lunches. And when you have nothing to offer, you’re just a beggar. You’re like, “I don’t have anything to give you, but please, whatever your cast-offs. The crusts of bread.”AVC: “I have this seitan.”AT: “Yes, I would like to offer you this date roll for your rejecta. I will eat your rejecta.” So there was that, and then when I went home, I lived in a black neighborhood and I talked, in their minds, like a white kid, and they thought I was fancy and putting on airs. And yes, I did get jumped every few months in that neighborhood, as well. As a result, it did two things: It made me an isolated kid, but it also made me relatively confident, which is weird, because I guess I just felt like, “Nothing worse can happen that this!” [Laughs.] So I just figured, “I’ll put myself out there, ’cause it can’t get any worse than it’s already gotten.” But I also was a huge reader and an academic, very much, and also loved fantasy. And that’s where all the nerdery came from. I loved fantasy and science fiction, and I was just this kind of crazy [Robert] Heinlein and [Ray] Bradbury reader, and would read books about time travel over and over again, and dream that I could fold myself. I was really an odd combination of factors. You know, science-fair queen, man. “Let’s go. Let’s grow some plants with UV lights and see what happens. Let’s use as our control plants grown in the sun. What’s gonna happen?”

Okay I am finally seeing this thing thanks to my girlfriend's fandom and yeah, this is ridiculously great. OD'd on the entire second season today (and had already seen the Katya android episode that just ran so I'm caught up there). H. Animation World Network interview with Adam Reed: http://www.awn.com/articles/people/adam-reed-talks-the-smilthy-good-fun-of-archer
DS: You had some really great guest stars this past season and some interesting story arcs. The season started out with The Heart of Archness episodes with Patrick Warburton. You had the arc of course with Burt Reynolds. I know you are a fan of Mr. Reynolds. I watched all his films when I was growing up. He was one of the biggest actions stars when I was a kid. AR: The biggest. I think it was either five or seven years in a row he was the number one box-office man.DS: What was it like working with him? Was it as much fun as you imagined it would be?AR: We normally do our recordings over the phone because we are in Atlanta, and our talent is in LA or New York or filming a movie somewhere. But for Burt, Matt Thompson and I actually flew down to Florida to meet him. [We were] Just giddy. I had his big hardcover autobiography and I was like, “Would you mind signing this please?” Just total gushing fanboy. He was super, super cool and funny and adlibbed a bunch. Matt and I just kept looking at each other with just our mouths hanging open and our eyes wide, “We’re actually here, recording Burt Reynolds!”Episode 1, Season 3: The Man From Jupiter. Archer is shocked to learn that his mother Malory is dating his idol/hero/man-crush, Burt Reynolds. DS: I bet it was a hoot. You know, his little trademark laugh was really great. It was a really funny story arc. Are there any guests or special story arcs for next season that you can share?AR: Yes. We have Tim Olyphant, speaking of Justified and cool dark haired guys. He’s in an episode. He plays an old spy colleague of Archer’s who shows back up. We’ve talked about Sheryl’s billionaire brother. We’ll see him for the first time this season. He’s going to be played by Eugene Mirman. Kristen Schaal will be playing his girlfriend. In the Bob’s Burgers family, actually, in the season premier, I don’t know if crossover is the right word, but yeah, I guess maybe Bob’s Burgers Crossover is the phrase that I am looking. That starts out our season.DS: It will be interesting how those two would crossover. AR: We are doing another epic two-part season finale and the guest star in those two episodes will be played by a guy named John Hamm. I don’t know if you’ve heard of him.DS: Don’t think I have.AR: Speaking of other handsome dark haired guys.DS: But of course. AR: We’re just inundated with handsome dudes this year.

AR: We are doing another epic two-part season finale and the guest star in those two episodes will be played by a guy named John Hamm. I don’t know if you’ve heard of him.
DS: Don’t think I have.
AR: Speaking of other handsome dark haired guys.
DS: But of course.
AR: We’re just inundated with handsome dudes this year.

I hope every season now ends with a two-parter featuring the lead actor of a prestige drama series.
― Simon H., Thursday, 17 January 2013 16:52 (twelve years ago)
this week's ep had some of my favourite recurring jokes - ears ringing after an explosion and archer making that strangely addictive mawp sound, brett getting shot again (and archer trying to track how his bullet got to the lower floor was good fun, especially liked how easily he gets sidetracked).
― Jibe, Saturday, 2 February 2013 05:39 (twelve years ago)
Is this one that just showed? The last one I saw was the Archer's gay friend who is totally not gay for him and not gay honest ep. Which was pretty hilare.
― Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Saturday, 2 February 2013 08:16 (twelve years ago)
All of the *drop mic* jokes were the best.

yeah trayce i'm talking about the one that came out this thursday. i wasn't that into archer's gay friend episode though. which well, for this tv show just means i really liked it instead of loving it.
― Jibe, Saturday, 2 February 2013 09:30 (twelve years ago)
No thats cool it just means theres a new ep for me to hunt down :)
The gay friend one was bothersome in a few obvious ways, but its hard to take this show to task for things we know it's horrible about anyway - irredeemable assholishness etc
The final scene of that ep after we learn (by inference at least) Archer got one up the arse from his gay bff and theyre all sittin in the car saying nothing looking shell shocked... I didnt quite know what to make of that. I mean on the surface i laughed , but then.
― Manti and the Catfish (Trayce), Saturday, 2 February 2013 10:42 (twelve years ago)

Some great stuff here:

Apparently the models for the characters are a bunch of very random people Adam Reed knows from around Atlanta.

― this is called money bags (Phil D.), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 19:45 (twelve years ago)
Hahah yes that scene was hilarious.
Overall though, the last 2 eps have confused the hell out of me. Did I miss something, or was it a deliberate "wait, what?" moment that Katya is still alive (and bee-onic) and all that head of KGB stuff. WTH is going on there!? And this week's Archer snakebite hallucination ep was just nuts.
― a kissed out red popemobile (Trayce), Tuesday, 26 February 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)
head of kgb was a reveal but katya came back bionic last season and ran off w/ barry (giving him the condition that he not kill archer). the katya death arc was good, kinda wish they'd left that alone.
― balls, Tuesday, 26 February 2013 23:26 (twelve years ago)
Shit I must have missed that episode, it did seem like something had skipped over. That'd explain it.
― a kissed out red popemobile (Trayce), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 01:09 (twelve years ago)
yeah the return to the katya/barry plot kinda a let down after "Midnight Ron" the week before. a season high point for sure.
― Still S.M.D.H. ft. (will), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 01:12 (twelve years ago)
iirc, Adam Reed is fond of dropping in random shit and explaining later. I had the same "ok, I blacked out at some point last season" reaction to Ron Cadillac's first appearance.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 01:35 (twelve years ago)
wait people pay attention to the plot on this show?
― luaka boppa flame (some dude), Wednesday, 27 February 2013 01:42 (twelve years ago)
ron cadillac is voiced by ron leibman, jessica walter's real life husband
― balls, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 01:43 (twelve years ago)
there's usually no reason to (other than getting callbacks maybe) but the 'arcs' they had prior to this season - cancer, katya - were pretty great
― balls, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 01:47 (twelve years ago)
Yeah I wouldnt call it an ongoing plot, but there's definitely back-referring stuff often going on that I think it helps to know/remember.

Latest episode was pretty damn hilarous. Was it meant to be Anthony Bourdain they were imitaing, I assumed that was pretty obvious? Archer as secretly wanting to be a chef = gold.
― a kissed out red popemobile (Trayce), Sunday, 3 March 2013 23:30 (twelve years ago)
That was actually Bourdain guesting.

yeah, I watched it Monday night... if you've heard rumors about where they're going with season 5, they seem to be true. the first episode isn't really a very good episode... it just sets up season 5. a third of the episode is like a reverse clip show.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 17:25 (eleven years ago)
...or IS IT!?
OK I just saw it, and that was aamaaaaaaziiiiiinnnnggg. But I'm left wondering if that whole storyline, with the montage, is some dream sequence. Hm. Be interesing to see how next week pans out. For some reason my instincts are sniffing red herring.
― the Bronski Review (Trayce), Thursday, 16 January 2014 08:35 (eleven years ago)
Mainly because of the montage!
― the Bronski Review (Trayce), Thursday, 16 January 2014 08:36 (eleven years ago)
To wit: at the end of S4, they had to escape from underwater and Archer had to be revived afterwards cos he'd been unconcious. I mean... it could work...
WHEN SEASON FOUR NETFLIX WHEN :(

srsly this has become one of my favorite comedy shows. i have rewatched the first three seasons multiple times now, whenever i can't figure out what else to watch.
ian - check out justanimedubbed.tv if you dont want to wait. They have all of S4, as far as I know (the only bits they seem to be missing is "arch of darkness" storyline for some odd reason).

lol at you guys thinking Archer's montage of fantasy is in any way a reflection of the rest of the season
― mh, Friday, 17 January 2014 03:51 (eleven years ago)
I mean, lol at me if they do it, but I thought it was a fun one-off gag. Completely possible they do something with the cocaine sale angle, but I doubt it's that
― mh, Friday, 17 January 2014 03:52 (eleven years ago)
Yeah thats what I was saying. I think Reed has red-herringed everyone, and it was just thatone episode. Cmon the start was a blatant dream sequence!
― the Bronski Review (Trayce), Friday, 17 January 2014 03:57 (eleven years ago)
Mind u, them as drug runners would fit fine with the overall feel of the show anyway.
― the Bronski Review (Trayce), Friday, 17 January 2014 03:58 (eleven years ago)

I just finished watching season 6, this series has gone kinda soft, hasn't it? But I like it, they couldn't have the kept the whole ultra-cynical approach going without sacrificing character growth, and looks like they do actually want the characters (well, at least Archer and Lana) to evolve. Which I think is the right choice, as funny as the first couple of seasons were, I'm not sure if I'd wanted to watch those same jerkasses for four seasons more.
I found the whole Archer/Lana/AJ situation surprisingly touching, but I don't think they can stretch it much more, so I'm kinda hoping season 7 will be the last one. The whole thing is like Rachel/Ross in Friends (right down to them having a kid without being in a relationship), but if Friends thought us anything, is that you can't milk a "will they or won't they?" situation for years without it getting extremely tedious. Also, while the other characters have settled into niches of their own and are still funny, they should get their own character development too, like Archer and Lana got. I guess the episode with Pam's sister's wedding was going into that direction, but I'd like more of that.
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 1 September 2015 07:48 (ten years ago)
I got about halfway thru season 6 and stopped keeping up, mainly cos my other half, rather bafflingly, HATES this show. He loves crude cartoon shows like Bojack and whtnot, so I honestly dont get it, but eh.
― I checked Snoops , and it is for real (Trayce), Wednesday, 2 September 2015 01:10 (ten years ago)
That's kinda funny, considering that season 6 is closer to BoJack than any of the previous seasons (in that it isn't all cynical black humour anymore, and some of the asshole characters are actually showing some personal growth).
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 2 September 2015 06:19 (ten years ago)
He said he found the humour puerile. Its baffling, he loves puerile humour.

Archer: Danger Island
This season of the animated spy comedy finds Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) as a semi-functioning alcoholic seaplane pilot — a lush on the lush South Pacific island of Mitimotu. It’s 1939, and while the rest of the world is concerned about the looming Second World War, Archer is concerned only with who’s buying his next drink. Along with his trusty co-pilot/sidekick Pam (Amber Nash), Archer must navigate quicksand, cannibals, super-intelligent monkeys, poison darts and pirates in this dangerous and mysterious land.
So, drawing on Casablanca, Only Angels Have Wings, and Panama Lady?
