The trailer shows a sombre funeral presided over by voice of Big Brother Marcus Bentley, and attended by former Housemates loved and loathed, as they bid fond farewell to the show that made them household names. But, as the diary room chair is lowered into the ground the scene erupts into a colourful mardi gras as the true nature of the show is celebrated with a joyful explosion of confetti, carnival music and dancing.
OK, breaking with tradition slightly, with the first Joy Division album title instead of a seemingly inappropriate New Order one, one last time around the funfair and then away...

Big Brother bosses confirm that there will be between 80 and 90 hopeful housemates on launch night.
Blimey!
"We've got our shortlist of people coming down on launch night," he said. "There will probably be around 80 or 90 people. They are all coming down to join in this last carnival which is Big Brother. "None of them will know whether or not they have been picked. To be honest, not even we know all of them yet. Some of them we do, some we don't."He continued: "Big Brother still makes the decision on who goes in the house, like it has always done. You will just see the moment when they find out who enters this wonderful, beautiful house. There will be between 12 to 14 housemates. I'm being truthful, we genuinely don't know at this point how many. We haven't finished selecting yet, we are just trying to get the mix right."Explaining the physical setup on Wednesday night, he said: "They will still walk in individually and get their own walk into the house. They are just not pulling up in cars, getting booed or cheered. We are doing it in a slightly different way."They will be outside. On the big staging outside. Davina will be there. The big crowd will be there. They will all be there in the middle with their name badges on. Big Brother will announce who is going in the house, then you'll see their face as they start screaming, gibbering or running away madly from it. Who knows?"

Two days from now! Two days from now! I'm so eff-ing excited! And I know I'm going to be so annoyed by shit tasks and twists that I'll feel like switching off in disgust after half an hour! And I know that despite that I'll keep watching for three months!

Given this clashes with the start of the World Cup, I don't even expect to go through my usual "watch for a week out of curiosity before getting bored" and I suspect that media coverage will be lower than it's ever been.
― Matt DC, Monday, 7 June 2010 11:29 (fifteen years ago)
The tabloids and celeb magazines pretty much ignored BB last year as well.
― Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Monday, 7 June 2010 11:38 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah when the only magazines that give a shit about BB are Nuts and Zoo you know it's dead in the water.
― Matt DC, Monday, 7 June 2010 11:39 (fifteen years ago)
Nuts/Zoo coverage was pretty much centred on Sophie, as she had already been in both magazines before BB. Unless there's a housemate this year in a similar situation, the only media coverage outside C4/E4 might a resurgence of interest from the broadsheets and TV arts/critic programmes.
― Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Monday, 7 June 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah there's no way in the world they'll pick a female housemate with nice breasts.

This just in:
80 housemates to choose from today, a large number go in.
The show normal runs for 11 weeks, the winer gets the cheque and waits for their final eviction. This never happens..
instead, the show continues with housemates past (celeb and normal) joining the house. Until the end.

Right, here is the mission statement with regard to this thread, and the threads in past years.
There are a great many dedicated "big brother" forums, most are populated by fanaticists.
This is the place for people who are interested, but have a life. Plus, perspective. And, in past years, a few well informed insiders.
Am I 'excited' by this? No, not really. Will I watch? sure. Is Big Brother still important?
Well, that's a big question, but one point of view: You will never know how many sorts of people even exist without watching how they react to each other, to the controlling influence of a 'benign' authority figure and to external events, as you will here.
I think Gigli said it best when he sang "On with the Motley"
― Mark G, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 09:59 (fifteen years ago)
ah okay i'm going to watch the launch instead of Office space, coz i know they'll repeat that anyway.

I might have met some of this lot!
If there's a big, loud Northern dude, name beginning with N, he's a good, entertaining and surprisingly deep/self-aware guy who will through sheer force of personality bring out prejudice in others. There are more but he's the only one who revealed his own name.acoleuthic | 9 Jun '10, 20:26 | X | ^ This | Reply
He's also the only one
I'm absolutely positive will be on the show. Like, positive. There's larger than life then there's this guy. He keeps a seahorse on his keychain to signify his wild, primal, 'womanising', drunken side that he admits takes over on weekends, but spoke convincingly about being a man of study and deep reading during the week. Self-aware split-personality. Intimidating but nice. Charming or insatiable if you're a woman.

A bit cynical of them to pick One of Our Brave Boys if you ask me as you know they wanted one for the inevitable positive tabloid coverage whereas picking 14 hairdressers and mad monks leaves the show a bit more open to a lack of press.

Mmmm... interesting. (The comments here for the intro's, not the hm's necessarily)
I did pick Nathan as being a potential winner as soon as the cameras zoomed to him. Possibly the most popular 'entry' into the house ever.
Good point about the squaddie picking BB rather than the world cup. Hopefully he can overcome the 'mass approval from the genpop/tabloids' to show he's more than that.
There are certainly a fair few 'will not win' housemates, but obviously at this point that's unimportant. Still,Beyonce, Tim NBD, Jordan looka are in that category.
Oh, and Aussiebloke: There are loads of aussies over here, you're not that unique actually. I thought he looked like oh the other bloke in Zoolander.
HM's that might be more entertaining than first aps, Artysquatter, FirstGirl, Lastbloke
HM's that might turn into wallpaper, Beyonce, Cleorocos, Jordan (actually, all those predisposed to say "people say I look like xxx but I cannot sing/playfootball/sparkupaconversation")

More Ben stuff that I remembered this morning - he was the Chair of the something called the Tory Monday Club after being thrown out of our university's Tory society for being too right-wing. He and his two or three friends used to walk around campus outrageously tweeded up and referring to black women as "Mrs Buthelezi". One of them had some interesting theories about homosexuals and AIDS but I'm not sure which.
Also there was an unsubstantiated rumour that one of his older relatives was a key player in the Profumo affair.

He’s extremely passionate about politics and obsessed with the Middle East, wishing he was an Arab. He claims a harem of Arab girls would improve his home life as not only are they beautiful but they would also look after him.
Enlightened chap.

Out of those odds, I'd think Nathan and "Any Other" might be good value.

brow envy: mrs o measured me up last night and monobrow dude beats mine by half an inch :(
First impressions:Brizzle Jodie who likes a cock or two: might be ok, probably won't last, the prettier skinnier girls will bitch about her and reveal themselves to be idiotsSquaddie Steve: seems v popular with the other housemates who met him beforehand, hopefully more to him than the Our Brave Lad stereotype that has been touted here and elsewhere, fake black eyeball is p unnerving Posh Ben: looked like he was regretting going in immediately, he'll last as long as his first public voteRachael Knowles: you're a fucking lookalike get over yourselfNathan monobrow: rocking some serious eyebrow, will be a popular One Of The Lads types for a while but might not last the distanceReverend Dave: STOP. FUCKING. LAUGHING. YOU. LOUD. ANNOYING. TWAT. - he'll try to do a Steve Baldwin and fail Caoimhe "keeva": most likely to chum up with Govan and form early catty bitch crewGovan (will always be Guv-an rather than Jove-an to me): likely to be v popular, definite last fourShaggy Kajagoogoo: Oh look at you aren't you ZANY and MAD. Fuck off. Colin Hunt without the restraint.Ife, don't talk to me about Ife: Attractive & fit & moderately successful & likely to be popular meaning we'll write her off as a lazy up herself bitch asap :)Aussie Bloke who doesn't look like Beckham: g'day mate boomerang etc yeah you're unique we don't have Aussie blokes behind every bar in London. Will go far - currently the HOTTEST housemate in the BB pollSunshine: seems to have a brain in her head but too big an ego alongside it. hopefully isn't as awful as her intro vid made her lookKatie Cut-Price Corin: missed her going in - profile says she dislikes arrogant people so good luck in the BB house! (also on the C4 site, think I've found The Secret - "Corin sadly became a widower when her husband was killed in an accident at work just four months after they were married.")Super Mario Mole: seems a fairly nice well-rounded pleasant guy, they'll moider him!

Now we think about it, who was the last housemate that didn't act like the stereotype they were presented as before they went in?
Vanessa in 2005 was presented before entering the house as person most likely to shag anything in sight, and her whole VT was about how she would do anything with anybody. Spent about 7 weeks in her pyjamas drinking tea before refusing to vote one week and being evicted for it. Her?

― BLOODY BOLLOCKS HELL! (aldo), Sunday, 13 June 2010 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think there's much randomness in over half of the housemates picking Sunshine. I predict that she's one of the people who gets nominated for eviction.
― Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Sunday, 13 June 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)
Actually I'll go further than that - she'll be the first to be evicted.
― Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Sunday, 13 June 2010 22:11 (fifteen years ago)
Josie: slowburner, could do a Sophie and win the whole thing.Steve: I thought he'd fall into the "dad"/peacemaker role, but he seems to have avoided it, probably due to his experience running youth groups.Ben: not as bad as he first came across. This Mario crush situation will be interesting.Rachael: won't be the instigator of fights, but could be there shovelling fuel on the fire.Nathan: nice enough bloke but probably a mid series evictee.Dave: has dialled down the annoying laugh, but probably another mid series exit.Caoimhe AKA Keeva / Ife / Corin: your standard reality TV wannabe cannon fodder, mid series exits for all three.Govan AKA Joe-van: he could fall into a Freddie style over-explaining trap, but otherwise I think he's going to be there in the final week. I like the way he wasn't interested in the potential Sunshine vs Rachael house split that was brewing.Shabby: here's your persistent rule breaker for the series. Plus that loud personality = frequent nominee for eviction. Public will keep her in though as she's good entertainment value. And boy does this series look like it's going to need it.John James: liked how he wasn't too fussed about the pizza trashing. Could possibly make it through to the penultimate week.Sunshine: first evictee, see above.Mario: unlikely he'll be nominated for a while, but he has the get-out-of-jail-free card with the public because he succeeded at the secret task. But that'll wear off after about 7-10 days. This crush on Ben won't go anywhere and both know it, so no potential Charlie/Roddy lulz.
― Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Sunday, 13 June 2010 22:27 (fifteen years ago)
First Eviction: Sunshine (will be up against Shabby, but will take the majority of the vote).
Mid series:Rachael, Nathan, Dave (a 'slightly less childlike Jonty' vibe), Caoimhe AKA Keeva, Ife, Corin
Penultimate Week:John JamesShabbyBen (although I think he's most likely to walk - he's the one who has relaxed the least so far)Steve
Final Week:as-yet-unrevealed housemate #1as-yet-unrevealed housemate #2GovanMarioJosie

― Mark G, Monday, 14 June 2010 11:03 (fifteen years ago)
So, Mario, Josie, Corin and Ben more popular now, whereas Sunshine has dropped bigtime.
― Mark G, Monday, 14 June 2010 11:05 (fifteen years ago)
It's partly the Bea-isms, but mostly it's because Sunshine is one of those people who always always always has to be right regardless of the consequences to other people. The housemates have seen previous series, they know that when someone is given a secret task that if the other housemates suss them out then the secret taskee has something bad happen to them, usually involving eviction. I think that only Rachael figured it out - at one point she mentioned to Steve that maybe they shouldn't try and figure out who the mole was. But Sunshine kept going on and on about Mario being the mole, especially with regards to the vent in the toilet.
― Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Monday, 14 June 2010 11:17 (fifteen years ago)
Also I don't understand why Govan has dropped so much, unless the public perception is that he's Sunshine's main ally?
― Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Monday, 14 June 2010 11:19 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, oops missed that!
I think it's more that he was overpopular when he went in. Big swing downwards though.
― Mark G, Monday, 14 June 2010 11:36 (fifteen years ago)
Even after the vote, when several people explained to Sunshine why they had voted for her, because they knew she wasn't the mole, she still sulked about it.
― Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Monday, 14 June 2010 11:44 (fifteen years ago)
Something else I want to note: it's commendable that C4 have gone with another batch of reasonable housemates this year. I had been concerned that being the last series they'd shove a load of aggro nutters in there. Although maybe they're saving the crazies for after the World Cup finishes.
― Fat Dog Franklin (snoball), Monday, 14 June 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)
.. which is MAKING SURE she gets nommed, bigtime.
Which means:
1) Whoever she's up against, she might not actually get evicted, but she sure will sulk BIGTIME about *really* getting voted for.
um, list ends.
― Mark G, Monday, 14 June 2010 11:48 (fifteen years ago)

According to The Sun, housemates will be asked to nominate for the first time today, with two or more housemates due to face the eviction vote as a result. However, the nominated housemates will then be given a task to complete, with the winner gaining immunity from the public vote. But there is also an extra twist. The housemate who wins the task will then have to select another housemate to face the public vote in their place.

I won't like it if Shabby goes, because we haven't had our quota of persistent rulebreaks and random housemate punishments yet.
xp The best choice for Dave would have been to pick Mario, because they get on well and it can be justified to the rest of the housemates by arguing "he succeeded at the secret task so the public must love him".

A particular slap in the face was when Davina said "The first person to be evicted from the BB house... will be announced after this break!". And then the expression on her face when the crowd booed, it was almost enough to make me switch off. Because "HAHAHA you're suckers who will sit through a commercial break blah blah". BB pre-dates widespread use of the internet (particularly social networking sites), and the producers still haven't figured out a way to fix that.

Don't understand why Govan was evicted. Do people really want to see more of Dave bible thumping or Ben requesting Shirley Bassey songs? Even Mario has started to get fed up with him - his "I give you a chance to redeem yourself" monologue when he was alone in the task room.

Because the cretins who vote in this tend to evict the black folks first?
― WHEN CROWS GO BAD (suzy), Saturday, 26 June 2010 12:45 (fifteen years ago)
I was looking back at this earlier today and it is alarming. At least in the first few weeks, when the GBP have the choice between a white housemate and a non-white housemate, they'll evict the non-white housemate.
― display-name aesthete (snoball), Saturday, 26 June 2010 12:55 (fifteen years ago)
Early evictees:
2010: Rachael, Govan2009: Beinazir, Sophia, Cairon2008: Sylvia - she was up for eviction against Mohamed and got over 90% of the vote so it seems that the GBP is even more anti-black than anti-Muslim2007: Shabnam2006: Dawn was ejected (due to a coded message being passed to her from the outside), Shahbaz walked, and Jonathan wasn't even a proper housemate as Aisleyne evicted him (on the basis that he'd said that he didn't mind). Apart from those three, everyone else was white.2005: this year is different as Derek survived two evictions, but from this year on back to the beginning, the trend is that the women are evicted first.
― display-name aesthete (snoball), Saturday, 26 June 2010 13:12 (fifteen years ago)
2005: Mary, Lesley, Sam2004: Vanessa2003: Anouska, Justine, Sissy2002: Lynne, Alison2001: Narinder (the first two evictions were Helen vs Penny and Paul vs Stuart)2000: the 2nd eviction was the first time the public got to pick between a man (Andrew) and a woman (Caroline), and they evicted... Andrew
― display-name aesthete (snoball), Saturday, 26 June 2010 13:20 (fifteen years ago)
Also (I think someone mentioned this upthread), during the first eviction this year, Davina mentioned that every year the first evictee has been a woman.

It's uncanny: Shabby has the same exact voice as my literary agent.
― Vuvuzilla (suzy), Monday, 5 July 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)
The hat-wearing squatter lasted 27 days and leaves ten people in the game. She is likely to be replaced by a number of new housemates at the end of this week.
― Mark G, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 00:57 (fifteen years ago)
It was later revealed that 24-year-old Australian John James and 22-year-old Irish student Caoimhe had received the most nominations from their fellow housemates. Earlier, John James anticipated that he would face the public vote following a series of arguments over the past week. Caoimhe faced eviction last week after being chosen by David in the 'Save & Replace' task, and has told housemates that she wants to leave. It is likely that the nominated housemates will be given an opportunity to choose another to face the public vote in a 'Save & Replace' task tomorrow.

i've seen a total of about half an hour of this since launch night but evey time i watch it J/James is moaning about the fallout of some argument or other he's involved in. i take it he's one of those people who are just annoyed with everyone all the time & goes on and on about it? i've met quite a few australians like this as it happens.

― ninjas and lasers and gold and (snoball), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 08:31 (fifteen years ago)
I always just assume that they think that x person is argumentative and kind of annoying, then vote him out, then realise that actually the house is a bit dull without them. I also can't stand Nathan, and while I loathe Caoimhe, I found myself briefly sympathetic to her cause because of him. Only briefly, however. And I liked Shabby by the end.
― orakle-krake (Gukbe), Wednesday, 7 July 2010 08:45 (fifteen years ago)
His aggressiveness and body language when shouting at Shabby (never mind the verbals) suggested someone taking his self-appointed role of mood policeman just a tad too seriously, loike. Plus there's something psycho about the way he asserts control that's more insidious than the Oz aggro merchant. I'm sure Shabby has dealt with bigger pricks in her life but here, could not escape from one - I liked her because she was articulate bordering on verbose, but I like Josie's articulacy (based around a less literate emotional intelligence) just as much.

One of the three new housemates is a 19 year old maths genius who makes Luke/Orville from two years ago seem normal. Actually new guy is quoted as saying that he wants to go on the show to "become more normal" - which is like auditioning for 'Britain's Got Talent' because you want people to take you seriously.

You know, I don't think I ever said..
Basically, a fan site called Big Brother Online, run news stories, and generates popup ads like plenty (if not exactly crazy), but they run a fairly decent set of polls. Many are of the "What do you think of Steve? 1) he's a hero and all round good bloke 2) He's a boring git who only remains out of sympathy" type, but each week they run a poll based on "Who do you want out". Naturally, it's not "Who do you want to save" and sometimes it's result is wrong, bu it's more right than the usual octopus.

Keeley's lame, though - she's allowing a man with eight kids and no legs to flirt with her 24/7 - while complaining about him in asides - and apparently footballer shagging is an interesting conversation, but not divulging which ones you've done makes you super-interesting. Personality-wise, she's like an assistant manager at the Gap or suchlike.
The one spot-on observation she's made is that John James only picks arguments with women.

Ben probably benefiting the most from the halo effect of being a housemate - which was visibly wearing off during the interview. The one constant in all of this is that Davina's interview technique is still a shambles. But if the producers can keep up this level of interest for the rest of the series I'll be sad when it's over.

Sam Pepper is the irritant that will stay until the final week due to ever more transparently obvious tinkering by the producers.

Mario had therefore saved him from facing possible eviction, and chose newest housemate Sam Pepper to take his place. As a result, David, Jo, Joe John and Sam will face eviction this week, and early indications are that moody moaner Jo might go.

I'm overseas, so have been relying on Digital Spy for catch-ups. Question: why is Sam the new favourite to win? Because on paper, he sounds fairly awful. Is it the awfulness that people are responding to positively, or are there other dimensions to him which I'm missing?
― mike t-diva, Thursday, 12 August 2010 05:59 (fifteen years ago)
He looks a bit like harry potter, um, he acts like the average blogger, um, dunno.
― Mark G, Thursday, 12 August 2010 07:03 (fifteen years ago)
Tree of Temptation OTM when it told Sam that he dressed like a 7 year old. He's being kept in the house because he annoys most of the others, but he won't win unless the action gets glacially slow.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 12 August 2010 08:02 (fifteen years ago)
sam is boring as hell when he harps on the usual wee jibes but have come around to him a bit as he does do some entertaining stuff and comes out with funny things now and then and he doesn't win so that's fine
there has been far too much out-of-the-houseness this year - really loved the lisa and david in alien costumes around london thing last year but that was v different. performing for a crowd comedy singing a duet magic trick crap is not good or much fun. another thing that has done for the illusion of them being insulated from public opinion or whatever is the more-than-ever warning of new housemates not to talk about the outside world stuff
― conrad, Thursday, 12 August 2010 10:46 (fifteen years ago)
The Pantomime horse race was good though
― Mark G, Friday, 13 August 2010 11:03 (fifteen years ago)
I loved how JJ and John James were completely committed and threw themselves into the race at Sandown Park. It's the kind of task that can turn 7th/8th place into 2nd/3rd.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 13 August 2010 11:24 (fifteen years ago)
But someone please give Sam some Mogodon or something. "too much coffee" indeed.
Bit of a "set-to" involving John James and Sam last night.
"sort of" made up the day after, but there had been tears before bedtime last night...
― Mark G, Friday, 13 August 2010 15:19 (fifteen years ago)
Right, so four are going, so this here being a "who do you want evicted next" poll... http://vote.sparklit.com/poll.spark/1119277
However, when asked who is your favourite, eight out of ten cats said.. http://vote.sparklit.com/poll.spark/1119266
Which is surprising, not so much for the 'most' fav, but for the least....

that's one shoddily constructed building. you can't call a heavy rainfall a "flash flood" just because you can't build a roof.

So, the final stretch towards the final winner, then the grand final...
― Mark G, Monday, 23 August 2010 09:11 (fifteen years ago)
Just for lols they should put in all the housemates who walked in previous years, then cancel the "Ultimate Grand Final ROXXORZZZ" on the 2nd day.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Monday, 23 August 2010 09:34 (fifteen years ago)
wha what the hell is BB All-Stars. Actually I can probably guess. Maybe I'll watch! I did mean to watch this series but never quite got around to it, although bits I have seen have been quite good.
― Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Monday, 23 August 2010 11:22 (fifteen years ago)
BB11 final is on Tuesday 24th. The winner stays in the house, and housemates from previous years (although not necessarily winners) will be put in for another two weeks. Evictions continue and the winner is pronounced Ultimate Housemate or something.
BB All-Stars
They should give it a Brian Jacks' Superstars theme.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Monday, 23 August 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)
The run-up to the final, and usually we say "OK, what's your guess as to the final positions"..
But, it does seem too blatantly obvious.
Pretty much what the Sparklit poll says was what I came up with, although I did wonder if the last two would be reversed...
Anyway, clearest winer since Pete Bennet, innit?
― Mark G, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 08:08 (fifteen years ago)
This 'ultimate housemate' thing looks like it'll be, inadvertently, the best move that the producers could have made. Who'd really watch the final otherwise as it's such a foregone conclusion? 2hrs 50 min prog tonight BTW - although as it's a cross between a BB final and a CBB opening show, it's a lot more tolerable.Any ideas on which previous housemates might be going in? Obviously Brian is a given.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 08:18 (fifteen years ago)
And I'd agree with that poll as to the winner, but disagree about the placing for JJ. I like him, he's been consistently good at tasks and seems likeable enough, unless I missed some scary freakout. OTM about Mario though. Losing to a guy who talks about "getting drunk on the Holy Spirit" and "The Glory(tm)" is what happens when you walk around without your shreddies being crepey to a 19yo math geek.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 08:24 (fifteen years ago)

Probable new housemates - Both Brians, Makosi, Nadia, Alex Reid, Vanessa Feltz, Grace and Mikey (the one from the same series as Grace).
― 8 (88), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 10:13 (fifteen years ago)
I thought Alex Reid knocked it back because he's concentrating on a fight or something?
― a harshbuzz to my manpain (onimo), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 10:23 (fifteen years ago)
xp Makosi (LOSER... YOU KNOW IT... SEXUAL!) I'm not interested in seeing at all, it was bad enough when she appeared on BB last in a recreation of the cardboard box task. The others should be OK. Be interesting to see if Grace is as aggressive as last time. But this is going to be Brian vs Brian for the title.

Purely to keep it standard from previous years (Last year and I think the year before were also 1 thread). Back in the day, long threads took ages to load. Now there's the 'Not all messages are displayed' construct, and also it's a lot faster to load complete threads anyway.
Although in previous years, the thread titles have reflected the BB environment as it stood at the time, they went out-of-date quite quickly.
I suppose a thread two would be appropriate now, but not really necessary.

Check out Big Brother 2005 - five threads, each of 600 posts or more!
― Mark G, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 08:31 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah I remember going through loads of threads trying to find something from an old BB.
In ten series I've gone between watching obsessively and not giving a shit to taking a passing interest. This screenshot may be my favourite thing about the entire show

did you watch big brother?
― conrad, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 14:41 (fifteen years ago)
who me? This season or ever? This season, like the past few, I've been far more out than in. I think the last one I watched properly was 2007. Why?
― Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)
Chantelle doesn't really understand what not having a boyfriend is. She hasn't had a boyfriend apart from dating Dane Bowers and going out with Jermaine Defoe for five or six months.
John McCririck is so horrible.
― ailsa, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:28 (fifteen years ago)
Marcus Bentley came into the house during an "ignore the obvious" task and commented on the housemates while he was in there. xpost
― a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:29 (fifteen years ago)
Half of the people in there are slimy repellent self centred fame hungry egotists. They get bent out of shape whenever they think that they're not the centre of attention. Their only purpose in the house is to be cannon fodder for Coolio's wind-ups.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:31 (fifteen years ago)
xpost aha! Having seen the end of that task I was sad to have missed most of it, it looked like one of the best things they'd done for some time.

Desmond is likely to pay far less than that. One senior TV industry insider said that £30m might be a more realistic figure now that the show's popularity has waned.
i'm pretty sure the going rate is less than 1/10th of that.
― jed_, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)
Some loose change and half a packet of crisps might be a more realistic figure. Pretty sure no-one's going to watch if it in on C5.

― conrad, Thursday, 26 August 2010 15:37 (fifteen years ago)
Probably best for Josie that she's out of that house. She probably would have won. Meanwhile, getting tired of the other housemates continually cornering Preston and Chantelle and asking them about their relationship/divorce. Brian especially, and he's starting to remind me of Jedward's uncle or something. I thought at the start that he could win this, but now I'm not so sure.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 26 August 2010 21:16 (fifteen years ago)
Coolio v. John Mc Cririck for the chop.
― winston burchill (suzy), Thursday, 26 August 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)
They're both unpleasent, JMc especially, but there are so many other people in there that deserve to go, it's hard to decide. Makosi vs Nadia? A real talent vacuum there.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 26 August 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)
Also I'm torn between giving the housemates tasks and just leaving them to be bored bored bored.

― conrad, Thursday, 26 August 2010 22:02 (fifteen years ago)
I think now that I can't be bothered with it. Haven't seen, but if Brian's gone annoying then it's all downhill. Calling Ulrika for the win.
Michelle Bass and Victor going in tomorrow, apparently. Into a bedsit.
― ailsa, Thursday, 26 August 2010 22:12 (fifteen years ago)
lol at Coolio falling asleep in the bath. Whatever happened to his CBB claim that he had the energy of an 18 year old? It's not just Brian that's annoying, it's all of them wrt to Preston/Chantelle. Well almost all of them - Makosi is too self-centred. It's almost got to the point where Preston seems like the most normal one there - which is bad, because he's really an insufferable talent-free twunt. The producers are probably going to try to keep John Mc in there by making him immune from nominations, which might result in him walking - do they keep the money if they walk? Possibly Chantelle or Preston might walk too. Nick also if he gets bored. The others will hang on to the bitter end.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 26 August 2010 22:22 (fifteen years ago)
John's up for nomination already.
― winston burchill (suzy), Thursday, 26 August 2010 22:25 (fifteen years ago)
And never mind putting Michelle and Victor in the bedsit - Makosi and Nadia should be put in there and be made (not that they'll need much prompting) to re-enact 'Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?'.

It's not just Brian that's annoying
Yeah, but he's the one I didn't want to be annoying. Can't remember what I thought of him at the time, but with hindsight, he seems decent and one I didn't want to be bad in this.
I sort of think Nick might win this, based on absolutely nothing at all.
― ailsa, Thursday, 26 August 2010 22:30 (fifteen years ago)
love how makosi has obviously never questioned her faith at all so that some old hackneyed bullshit from mccriprick can make her have a crisis because he's so convincing jesus christ
― conrad, Thursday, 26 August 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)
xp I agree that Nick has a good chance of winning, possibly because secretly making a list and being a two faced schemer is relatively speaking a bit minor after ten years of BB antics.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 26 August 2010 22:51 (fifteen years ago)
yes and as much as I hate him for being weird and awkward and a posho and having funny lips and a funny face and being a posho - telling a bunch of strangers that your wife had died in a plane crash when she didn't and you're not married is pretty badass

I don't care who wins, who gets evicted, any of it.
I'm assuming they haven't covered Josie leaving as yet (I did see she was on BBLB), but there's no real interaction other than people who know each other, I can't get involved really.
I might watch bits of this, but hey.
― Mark G, Friday, 27 August 2010 08:42 (fifteen years ago)
It's turned into Celebrity Big Brother, and as soon as the producers start treating it like that the better.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 27 August 2010 09:03 (fifteen years ago)
It's turned into Celebrity Big Brother
Brian, Makosi, Chantelle, Nick, Nadia = not really celebrity, despite a couple of failed TV showsPreston, John = barely celebrityUlrika = well she's on Shooting Starsum - who else is there?
I reckon Preston & Chantelle get it together again for a round of love reunited magazine covers then another round of split up covers. Should keep them going till Christmas.
Can't imagine what possessed them to invite McCrirrick in - p sure no-one who worked on that series would want him back. He wasn't an evil villainous love-to-hate housemate - he was just a moaning childish arsehole. Didn't he stop speaking for a day because of a diet coke or something? Arsehole.

Coolio = celebrity.
not really celebrity, despite a couple of failed TV shows
This could apply to several Celeb BB contestants over the years as well. I would have liked to have seen some of the non-wannabes from a few years back, maybe someone like Glyn to see how he has grown, or whatever, but I suspect they couldn't have tempted them to do this.

True but then I still contest that Ultimate BB consists of more BB has-beens than actual celeb has-beens & therefore isn't really CBB. Wish they'd have gone for nothing but previous BB winners, celeb or otherwise.

Good stuff last night between lol nominations, return of Craiglike and his quality wind-up and Victor prodding the Makosi/Ulrika tension.
Brian *really* wants to win eh?
― onimo, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 07:39 (fifteen years ago)
Victor's prodding is having the opposite effect: Makosi is wise to Victor's winding and is cooling off on the idea of confronting.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 08:25 (fifteen years ago)
I don't like wind-ups usually, but that was sterling work from Craig, a combination of serious face and perfect timing. If they put him back in he'd win easily, no contest. My reading of the Makosi/Ulrika thing is that the tension between them is because they're similar characters. They both want to be the centre of attention, but at the same time without appearing to doing that. The difference being Makosi will talk about people behind their backs to set up animosity, while Ulrika mopes around saying how miserable she is. It's interesting how quickly Nadia and Michelle have fallen into being Makosi's lieutenants. This Nick/Victor team-up has potential, and it has the wider goal of making entertaining stuff happen, rather than Coolio's simple "I'm bored so I will annoy people".
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 08:41 (fifteen years ago)

Big Brother 10 star Marcus Akin has blasted Ultimate Big Brother contestant Ulrika Jonsson, describing the TV presenter as a "money grabbing t**t".Akin claimed that he wasn't happy about Jonsson returning for a second stint on the show, arguing that she is not even a real fan of the programme."I bet she asked for an outrageous fee like she did last time," he wrote in his Hounslow Chronicle column."Here's another money grabbing t**t who hates Big Brother. You should see her backstage. What a miserable f**ker! Face like a slapped arse!"Yet when the cameras roll, she turns on the smile. I'm not a big fan of people like her. She also plays the victim card non stop. My view is, if you want to act like a slut (or anything else for that matter), you shouldn't complain if people treat you like one."The reality TV star also questioned Makosi's position in the house, commenting: "While she is lovely in real life, what does she bring to Big Brother apart from her t*ts? A fake pregnancy? Fail."

loving how nikki got the most cheers when davina read out the names. brian is such a boringly obvious BB winner, he's ok and everything but zz. would prefer if it became nikki's BB and all plots were seen through her eyes. constant lols at how whenever there are big fights nikki invariably saunters by, or simply falls asleep: favourite scene so far is some massive argument early in the series with everyone sat on the sofa hurling insults, while nikki is fast asleep on brian's shoulder, in some horribly uncomfortable twisted pose, mouth open and completely oblivious to everything

Victor's raps were pretty funny. Chantelle doesn't understand rapping or even rhyming words. Preston doesn't understand gargling. Brian doesn't understand drawing. Ulrika and Nikki more or less miming each other.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Monday, 6 September 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)
Chantelle was hilarious, but I'm not sure if it was intentional deadpanning or not.
― ailsa, Monday, 6 September 2010 21:24 (fifteen years ago)
Vanessa will get evicted next - jumping straight to the front of the line as the person in the house who is still most in their TV persona. And WTF is it with Nikki falling asleep against people?
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Monday, 6 September 2010 21:25 (fifteen years ago)
intentional deadpanning
I think it was just that Chantelle couldn't think of anything off the top of her head. Would have been interesting to see Preston, nominally a songwriter, try the rap task.

Narcolepsy? xpost
I'm loathing Vanessa because she's like a chubby version of someone at work who uses terms like 'big respect!' to give praise to people half her age, who have no ay to squirm off the interaction.
Victor and Jason were horrible and threatening, also Victor went off on an acquaintance of a number of ILXors who was in the series.

That's pretty much it and cozen doesn't confirm it despite being on the thread. The thread is pretty split on the events if you put aside usual ILX paranoia about passive-aggressive behaviour. Also Lucy posts something from DS where a live feed watcher talks about how Shell had nearly all her bad behaviour edited out of the C4 show.

Preston OTM about Vanessa talking to people as though she's interviewing them. Very obliging of the producers to immediately cut to her doing exactly that with one of the other housemates. Also irritating is Ulrika's attempts to latch onto Preston and Chantelle by continually prodding them about their relationship. She must think that they are the main story outside the house, and that being around them will increase her popularity with the public.

i know i'm a nikki stan but this was a really powerful piece of tv.
dislike ulrika more and more, she's a bossy bullying type but manages to mask it well. when vanessa walked in and she did that deranged teeth-baring mouth wide open grin at her, brr.
brian's ok but he's much too knowing and tv-savvy to be the Ultimate BB contestant. this series especially he's become an OTT tv host type who shouts over everything to try and make the narrative fit his view, zz. victor would be a good winner as he's taken the whole thing in good spirits, lolling along the way and knowing what the public wants: eating all that gross food with good grace, choosing nikki for creepy clown task, wearing tree outfit (up to a point) etc. both him and nikki have brought the biggest and best chuckles this series, so i want them to come out on top, don't care much for the rest.
― NI, Thursday, 9 September 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)
I think that Victor's handling of the tree costume was pretty much perfect - going along with it at first and then "rebelling" for maximum lols in all directions.

Nikki ftw despite her gross stupidity re: Nadia being "on her period" - she's won it the very moment she started talking to Vanessa about her food issues. It was, just like her, completely honest and without a thought for the cameras. Touching. She needs a mother figure and I think the UK mobile phone voting public will come up trumps.
Brian lost it when he showed himself to be incredibly weak and / or incapable to stand up to Nadia's flid at the hot plate / Ulrika thang. If he'd have told Nadia to fuck off he would win tomorrow.
(Maybe)

I'm just watching last night's at the moment. I won't be terribly upset if (when) Brian wins, though I'm still stanning for Victor because he's probably my favourite housemate ever (if you ignore the fight-night, which no-one really came out of with flying colours).
I can understand a Nikki win, though I wouldn't vote for it myself. Similarly Chantelle, she's kind of ultimately what Big Brother has become about, and that alone would make her a fitting winner, even if she is a crap one.
I wish they'd have put Craig Phillips in to give Brian a real rival though.
― ailsa, Friday, 10 September 2010 07:56 (fifteen years ago)
Davina found it much easier to say "You're my favourite housemate" to some of the housemates....
― Mark G, Friday, 10 September 2010 08:48 (fifteen years ago)
We had to switch off the 8 Out 10 Cats BB special... just couldn't stomach the nastiness.
I am also leaning towards Nikki for the win, although it's a given that Brian will walk it.
― mike t-diva, Friday, 10 September 2010 09:07 (fifteen years ago)
I think they dialled down the nastiness, compared to previous 8/10CBBS's, and certainly compared to the regular 8/10C.

There were a few times where I thought Jimmy Carr was setting up one of his usual snarky remarks, but then he didn't say it.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 10 September 2010 09:13 (fifteen years ago)
i'm surprised at the love for nikki here, i remember her getting a lot of hate on the bb7 thread. i guess she's mellowed now, plus she clashed heavily with aisleyne back then who bizarrely (to me) had a lot of support on there back then.
reading mentions of names and series has led me checking out a few old DS threads and wiki pages and it's been shocking how nostalgic they've made me feel. i mean i genuinely *cared* about these people at the time! even the minor characters, and in most cases i'm more curious as to what they're up to these days.
looking back i'm gonna say that bb5 was far and away the best, the madness of putting marco, jason, emma and nadia in the same house. amazing nothing more serious happened. plus russell brand doing the BBLB show bringing some brilliant lols - never forget him taking the piss out of jason for using the word 'taunting' about marco dancing in front of him, so so good. speaking of jason (prob my most hated bb contestant ever, with sezer and stuart bb2 not far behind): he's lonely but buff.
bb7 deserves a mention too, mostly for nikki & glynn - add glyn to list of people who really should have been in this UBB series. they copped out by putting so many celebs in, it should have been all about the average joes as per the original point of the show. still, this UBB and bb11 have both been great and i'm sad it's ending. i kinda want ch5 to bring it back but do more UBBs, with glyn, tickle and belou but can't see that ever happening.
― NI, Friday, 10 September 2010 09:54 (fifteen years ago)
Jason had a few dodgy moments (istr something creepy happening in the bathroom with someone, maybe Aisleyne?) but I kind of liked his no nonsense approach to insulting people by simply saying "fuck off ya dick" instead of trying to come up with smart/bitchy comments all the time.

I dunno, I remember him calling Marco "Gollum" back in.
Biggest contrast: His "confident" manner inside the house, and his "bag of nervesness" being interviewed by Davina after having come second to Nadia.

I think not being Preston or Ulrika helps.
"HLA - that's Hot Lesbian Action". Nick and Preston were pretty good.
btw, Davina said a minor swearie on BBLB earlier and no-one said "davina, you are live on E4, please do not swear". That's the sort of slackness you come to expect from Lamb and Willis. Would never have happened with Dermot in charge.

I reckon it'll go:
PrestonUlrikaNickVictorChantelleNikkiBrian
Chantelle/Victor the only two I'm not sure of the order.

That's not what I meant. I meant Davina trying to get Preston to admit he was going to dump his girlfriend based on the fact that his ex-wife hasn't gotten over him. I genuinely don't think she knew he was doing it (though I'm sure she'd maybe have guessed, I don't think she was expecting the emotion that followed)

― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)
Brand also clearly watched and formed his own opinions about the housemates, and was fiercely defensive and often supportive of even the "hated" ones. George Lamb is a fucking insult of a replacement.
― ailsa, Friday, 10 September 2010 21:43 (fifteen years ago)
Chantelle's best bits = lots of crying
― ailsa, Friday, 10 September 2010 21:44 (fifteen years ago)
Did Lamb ever actually watch the show? He didn't seem to enthused by it on BBLB did he?
― Andy Cole (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:45 (fifteen years ago)
That BB7 BBLB episode was the same day that Nikki went back into the house, and Dermot's analysis of what that meant for her/Pete/the other housemates/the public was just so OTM that it was clear he'd been following the show very closely. Rather than just turning up at the studio and being given a two page summary.

2nd: Nikki1st: Brian

And it's...
BRIAN!
― Andy Cole (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:49 (fifteen years ago)
Well done Brian. Right decision, well done people.
― ailsa, Friday, 10 September 2010 21:50 (fifteen years ago)
BBBM was awesome when he was on it.
You know that Family Guy episode when Peter becomes obsessed with Surfin' Bird and at one point is reading the paper, and says to Brian "This is curious. I seen no mention of an ornothological phenomena I was convinced all readers were aware of. In fact I was certain the entire population understood the taxonomical nature of the avian relationship. <ridiculously long pause, with knowing looks> Everybody knows about the bird, don't you know that the bird is the word..."?
Every night Brand would do the same joke before the break about pulling down his trousers and pants (with actions), wanking his dinkle to a semi and remonstrating with the celebrity involved in the anecdote. The joke itself was SO WEAK but the journey to the punchline was incredible.

Nikki's hair is all wrong, btw, but I do love her dress. It doesn't suit her, like, but I really like it.
― ailsa, Friday, 10 September 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)
So funny that when she goes for formal it's kind of Mad Men.
― trollin' with the homies (suzy), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:52 (fifteen years ago)
xxp I think that a lot of the latter problems with Brand's career can be traced to him not understanding what made that joke funny. As you say, it was the journey to the punchline, but for some reason Brand came to the conclusion that it was him saying "oooooooh my dinkle!". And his career's suffered ever since.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)
Burger King ad freaks me out, because he looks like at least two people I've worked with.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:54 (fifteen years ago)
And I love Nikki's hair - she's so small but somehow it suits her to have this huge teetering beyond-Rod-Stewart explosion.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:55 (fifteen years ago)
The brass band is embarrassingly shit.
― Andy Cole (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 10 September 2010 21:56 (fifteen years ago)
Release Brian!
I'd have preferred Victor but there was only ever going to be one winner.
Thanks for years of on and off ILX BB waffle guys. Like the LOST threads, a huge part of the fun was reading about it on ILX.
See you all on the shitty Channel 5 version next summer?
― pissky in the jar (onimo), Friday, 10 September 2010 22:09 (fifteen years ago)
It would really take some heavy re-tooling to get me to watch BB on another channel. For a start, whoever takes it on would have to rebuild the show from the ground up to properly integrate social networking and video websites.
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 10 September 2010 22:11 (fifteen years ago)
onimOTM

^^^ I would have felt like a total saddo watching BB without these ILX threads

I'm glad I came back for the end with you guys.
― ailsa, Friday, 10 September 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)
LOL, am glad Ailsa came back for the end too, ;-)
― trollin' with the homies (suzy), Friday, 10 September 2010 22:20 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, this kind of became UBB thread in the end.

That was a nice wee tribute to Davina, almost makes you forget that's she's just a shit interviewer who got very very lucky.
― ailsa, Friday, 10 September 2010 22:29 (fifteen years ago)
Haha, tweedledum, tweedledee and tweedleTWAT.
Closing montage was excellent. I feel a bit sad now. In both senses.
― ailsa, Friday, 10 September 2010 22:31 (fifteen years ago)
WTF are we all going to do now?!?!
― Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 10 September 2010 22:38 (fifteen years ago)
Apprentice, Strictly, X Factor. Is not the same though.

aw I'm sorry I missed this but my friends are dicks and chose to return to town today. I miss Russell Brand too! Never gonna hear that fucker Lamb ad lib about Derrida or the French Revolution. Poor Victor and Nikki, although I have nothing against Brian so good for him, may he develop a career again.
― Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Saturday, 11 September 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)
worst thing about lamb is his bored tone of voice, a disgusted supercilious sneer at the idea anyone listening to him go on about this dross. nothing likeable about him at all, used to love bblb but couldn't watch it once that charmless fuckwit became involved.
pretty gutted about UBB winner tbh, such an obvious boring choice. i always found brian watchable in a dumbed-down mainstream itv chatshow way and it was important for bb to have that, but the best parts always came out of left-wtf-field, cf: previous-but-one clip, brian belou's babe pig in the city ramblings and glyn's egg song. people bounced off brian well (nadia pmt chat) and he's undoubtedly a lovely guy to know but he hasn't had any memorable tv moments of his own making (zero in this thread so far or on all the best of bb shows/articles). i got the most out of bb when it was showing the maddest moments of extreme personalities whereas brian is just a nice normal chap being nice and normal.
― NI, Saturday, 11 September 2010 12:25 (fifteen years ago)
I don't think brian was that boring the awkward stuff with josh was brian's choice and making and he said last night that in the ubb he'd consciously decided not to be abrasive and I have no problem with that and he did it well meanwhile the nadia pmt chat was brian bouncing off of nikki not vice versa also his reaction to makosi suggesting lindsay lohan was dead was the same
on george lamb though I could not agree more dermot always seemed to really engage and take things seriously within the show where george lamb always seems to laughing at housemates and viewers and the whole show in an ugly way what a cunt
― conrad, Saturday, 11 September 2010 12:40 (fifteen years ago)
as great as later bbs still could be and were the experience for me was v definitely impacted by the departure of dermot (I didn't watch bblb the last few years as it became useless and annoying) and bbbm becoming even more crude and inane and crap over the years (was never that great but these last couple of years were just awful) and the disappearance of bbbb (big brain - a wee bit rubbish but did add some small different dimension) and the diary room uncut
this is what I always say though
― conrad, Saturday, 11 September 2010 12:47 (fifteen years ago)
he hasn't had any memorable tv moments of his own making (zero in this thread so far or on all the best of bb shows/articles).
His 360° vomit was a laugh, rewind and watch again moment.
― pissky in the jar (onimo), Saturday, 11 September 2010 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
^ this. I really liked him without him ever having to be event TV though.

yeah good point, just watched the davina goodbye show and was reminded of this one.
that goodbye show must have been made on a budget of 50p though, so cheap and shitty. pete burns's godawful rendering of YSMRR topped it off perfectly. it did make me want to see an hour long highlights show of each series though, so many great moments that need rediscovering
― NI, Monday, 13 September 2010 09:09 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, enjoyed the closedown with the echoey quotes: comprendez? i could kill you with these two fingers, etc. I wish they'd included "there's a new type of music taking over the world and it's called indie" though.
Still, I never have to see Kinga and the bottle or George Galloway's cat thing ever again.
― ailsa, Monday, 13 September 2010 09:40 (fifteen years ago)
apparently there were dvds released for the first 4 series. think s4 was a giveaway with the sun. can only find the s1 dvd on torrent sites though. the new s1-11 highlights dvd is meant to be rubbish - a 45 min highlight show and 3 full episodes (two from s9 and one from s11, weirdly). but yeah, really need reminding why i hated people like sezer, jason, tim so so much. there could be a great 60-90 min summing up doc of each series, following the basic narrative + all the best chuckles.
