But, as the diary room chair is lowered into the ground the scene erupts into a colourful mardi gras as the true nature of the show is celebrated with a joyful explosion of confetti, carnival music and dancing.

OK, breaking with tradition slightly, with the first Joy Division album title instead of a seemingly inappropriate New Order one, one last time around the funfair and then away...

Big Brother bosses confirm that there will be between 80 and 90 hopeful housemates on launch night.

"We've got our shortlist of people coming down on launch night," he said. "There will probably be around 80 or 90 people. They are all coming down to join in this last carnival which is Big Brother.

"None of them will know whether or not they have been picked. To be honest, not even we know all of them yet. Some of them we do, some we don't."

He continued: "Big Brother still makes the decision on who goes in the house, like it has always done. You will just see the moment when they find out who enters this wonderful, beautiful house. Explaining the physical setup on Wednesday night, he said: "They will still walk in individually and get their own walk into the house. They are just not pulling up in cars, getting booed or cheered. We are doing it in a slightly different way.

"They will be outside. On the big staging outside. Davina will be there. The big crowd will be there. They will all be there in the middle with their name badges on. Big Brother will announce who is going in the house, then you'll see their face as they start screaming, gibbering or running away madly from it. Who knows?"

Two days from now! Two days from now! I'm so eff-ing excited! And I know I'm going to be so annoyed by shit tasks and twists that I'll feel like switching off in disgust after half an hour! And I know that despite that I'll keep watching for three months!

Given this clashes with the start of the World Cup, I don't even expect to go through my usual "watch for a week out of curiosity before getting bored" and I suspect that media coverage will be lower than it's ever been.

The tabloids and celeb magazines pretty much ignored BB last year as well.

Yeah when the only magazines that give a shit about BB are Nuts and Zoo you know it's dead in the water.

Nuts/Zoo coverage was pretty much centred on Sophie, as she had already been in both magazines before BB. Unless there's a housemate this year in a similar situation, the only media coverage outside C4/E4 might a resurgence of interest from the broadsheets and TV arts/critic programmes.

I don't think there's much randomness in over half of the housemates picking Sunshine. I predict that she's one of the people who gets nominated for eviction.

So, Mario, Josie, Corin and Ben more popular now, whereas Sunshine has dropped bigtime.

It's partly the Bea-isms, but mostly it's because Sunshine is one of those people who always always always has to be right regardless of the consequences to other people. The housemates have seen previous series, they know that when someone is given a secret task that if the other housemates suss them out then the secret taskee has something bad happen to them, usually involving eviction. I think that only Rachael figured it out - at one point she mentioned to Steve that maybe they shouldn't try and figure out who the mole was. But Sunshine kept going on and on about Mario being the mole, especially with regards to the vent in the toilet.

Also I don't understand why Govan has dropped so much, unless the public perception is that he's Sunshine's main ally?

I think it's more that he was overpopular when he went in. Big swing downwards though.

Even after the vote, when several people explained to Sunshine why they had voted for her, because they knew she wasn't the mole, she still sulked about it.

Something else I want to note: it's commendable that C4 have gone with another batch of reasonable housemates this year. I had been concerned that being the last series they'd shove a load of aggro nutters in there. Although maybe they're saving the crazies for after the World Cup finishes.

A particular slap in the face was when Davina said "The first person to be evicted from the BB house... will be announced after this break!". And then the expression on her face when the crowd booed, it was almost enough to make me switch off. Because "HAHAHA you're suckers who will sit through a commercial break blah blah". BB pre-dates widespread use of the internet (particularly social networking sites), and the producers still haven't figured out a way to fix that.

Then again, having a 'safe from elimination' announcement was a nice touch. Shabby able to celebrate for a bit without having to console the loser. First time? (except for the final winner announcement)

To clarify, Ben, Dave, Govan and Shabby received the most nominations this afternoon, so unless she wins tomorrow's task (Tuesday), it will be the second week in a row that Shabby has faced eviction.

I was looking back at this earlier today and it is alarming. At least in the first few weeks, when the GBP have the choice between a white housemate and a non-white housemate, they'll evict the non-white housemate.

I always just assume that they think that x person is argumentative and kind of annoying, then vote him out, then realise that actually the house is a bit dull without them. Basically, a fan site called Big Brother Online, run news stories, and generates popup ads like plenty (if not exactly crazy), but they run a fairly decent set of polls. Many are of the "What do you think of Steve? 1) he's a hero and all round good bloke 2) He's a boring git who only remains out of sympathy" type, but each week they run a poll based on "Who do you want out". Naturally, it's not "Who do you want to save" and sometimes it's result is wrong, bu it's more right than the usual octopus.

I have hardly watched this season but this I can get with. What else has been part of this task?

Seemingly just about every rejected idea from previous series. Acting studetns dressed as zombies, a male model using the shower, various housemates relative, a brass band. It's actually been pretty good.

Also a housemate - Sam - is going to be put in to replace Laura (who walked). I guess they have to ignore him until the task is over.

i've not really watched this - about half an hour a week in total - but that seems a bit of a shame, ben going.

Ben's a knob - as well as a nob - but I would have preferred it if Dave went instead.

The one constant in all of this is that Davina's interview technique is still a shambles. I'm overseas, so have been relying on Digital Spy for catch-ups. Question: why is Sam the new favourite to win? Because on paper, he sounds fairly awful. Is it the awfulness that people are responding to positively, or are there other dimensions to him which I'm missing?

there has been far too much out-of-the-houseness this year - really loved the lisa and david in alien costumes around london thing last year but that was v different. performing for a crowd comedy singing a duet magic trick crap is not good or much fun. another thing that has done for the illusion of them being insulated from public opinion or whatever is the more-than-ever warning of new housemates not to talk about the outside world stuff

BB11 final is on Tuesday 24th. The winner stays in the house, and housemates from previous years (although not necessarily winners) will be put in for another two weeks. Evictions continue and the winner is pronounced Ultimate Housemate or something.

This 'ultimate housemate' thing looks like it'll be, inadvertently, the best move that the producers could have made. Who'd really watch the final otherwise as it's such a foregone conclusion? 2hrs 50 min prog tonight BTW - although as it's a cross between a BB final and a CBB opening show, it's a lot more tolerable.
Any ideas on which previous housemates might be going in? Obviously Brian is a given.

And I'd agree with that poll as to the winner, but disagree about the placing for JJ. I like him, he's been consistently good at tasks and seems likeable enough, unless I missed some scary freakout. OTM about Mario though. Losing to a guy who talks about "getting drunk on the Holy Spirit" and "The Glory(tm)" is what happens when you walk around without your shreddies being crepey to a 19yo math geek.
